    Blind date with a book
    Amanda S.

Stopped by Carmichael's on Independent Bookstore day just to browse. The staff greeted me as soon as I stepped through the door; they're always super friendly! They told me about the discount wall and the giveaways available for the day. I picked up a 'blind date with a book' which is basically a random book that is wrapped. There's a short description on the wrapping to help you get a feel for the book's content. So fun!! Can't wait to open it and see what I got!

I really like the atmosphere of the bookstore by mistake. I actually visited two location. I visited Bardstown Road and the Frankfurt location. I went for a book signing. The bookstore just like what you see on television is very small but that's the best part that makes it so personable and quaint. There was a room large enough to hold at least 25 to 30 individual adults for the book signing very personable. Highly recommend. The staff is very nice. The shelves are stock. There's variety of books. I did not have to order anything or ask the staff detailed questions about stock. Parking at both locations is limited. There is street parking and there's private lots.

Find a few quirky candles and gift ideas

It was nice to be back inside Carmichael's. I stopped by today with my husband to pick up a book on my wish list. One of the associates at the front desk helped to look up the book and locate a paperback version. We also took a moment to walk around. Some areas felt spaced differently (kids section) and they've expanded into the building behind them, which will serve as an event space. The shelves are packed with books but I'm a sucker for the fun miscellaneous items - socks, hoodies, bookmarks, stickers, candles, magnets, etc. Their website is nice as well. Fun to shop and easy to look up available books and their inventory. Curbside pick up is still available.

Carmichael's is a pleasant step back in time. A taste of what bookstores used to be. I love of all that a local, independent bookstore has to offer- the 'bookstore smell' when you first walk in, the sections of well-organized books, gift items, cards, journals and more, friendly and knowledgeable staff, and the feel that you have all the time in the world to browse and explore. Carmichael's is not huge, but staff will order any book that you wish. The children's section located in the back of the store is quaint and fun! Books by local writers are on feature displays with information about signings and more. I was told about a monthly book club that sounds very intriguing. I am sure that I will return often to this 40-year-old Louisville treasure! Happy reading!

Support your city, buy local! Carmichael's Bookstore is one of my favorite places on the planet. They usually have the book I am looking for and they'll always order it for me if they do not. They have a great selection of books and magazines, a delightful (but not overwhelming) amount of kitsch about the store. This bookstore has a remarkably friendly staff, they're very helpful. This store also has an excellent selection of books for the youths. The other Carmichaels have a satellite store for the youths which has its plusses and minuses. For one, I run the awful risk of encountering a youth at this Carmichaels (I'm not a fan) but on the upside if I need to get one of the youths in my life a gift I get them a book and I don't have to go to another location to do it. This one is close to, but not attached to, a coffee shop. Also, pluses and minuses abound on that front. My only drawback is that I only use Moleskine notebooks. They don't always have the ones I want or need. Fun fact: I call Carmichael's, "Charmander's" in my head.

I make it a point to find and support local independent bookstores whenever I'm in a new city. I was in Louisville with a bibliophile friend of mine for a girls' weekend, and we decided to stop by both locations of Carmichael's. I definitely preferred this location. It felt a lot less claustrophobic to me - more open, a slightly more varied selection of books. I do think if I lived in Louisville that I would have to special order books a lot - the store is just too small to carry everything that a larger store would have. But it's nice that Louisville has a few locations of independent bookstores. Some cities bigger than Louisville don't have any at all! All in all, I enjoyed supporting Carmichael's!

Lovely spot! Busy during the holiday season.

We were greeted right away by a volunteer working to organize and check-in donated books. One side of the renovated house holds fiction and another holds non-fiction. Upstairs is a kids area, restroom, and closets full of paperbacks. A few tables and the closets offered 3 or 2 books for $1. Quite a deal when you are like me, not searching for a particular book, just looking for an interesting story. In the front room near the register you can find vintage and collectible books as well as new arrivals. I also appreciated that coffee and tea were made for those that wanted to sit and stay awhile. Tell your friends about the Rosewater - I'm sure it's a hidden store. I've been incredibly close to it (across from the Streatery) and had no idea! Because it is a used bookstore, you can't guarantee they have what you're looking for, but the thrill is in finding what you didn't know you needed. Street parking is fairly easy to find. Near food and coffee shops.
