A BBQ treasure nestled between the edges of Ajax and Whitby offers must have succulent eats. I've been here several times by now and tried pretty much everything on the menu and nothing is disappointing, everything is delicious. On the most recent trip I really enjoyed the country fried steak. While it is heavy, it is perfectly fried and topped with a savoury and creamy white gravy. The fries on the side were cooked absolutely perfectly. The coleslaw was tangy and balanced. The Mac n Cheese was so creamy, with a hint of spice and topped with breadcrumbs to create a mix of flavours. This is already on top of the many other tasty dishes such as the pork shoulder and smoked chicken wings which I highly recommend. Butchie's is a BBQ staple for Durham region. I've been here several times and I'll be back many times over, especially during the summer for their beautiful backyard style patio! read more

I don't know why I was expecting more of bbq type food, but you're in for things like chicken wings, hush puppies, pulled pork, country fried steak, and sandwiches. No ribs or brisket, so I'm not sure if they really ever have that sort of bbq food available. The hush puppies were nice. I liked the crunchy/ crispy exterior and the soft, cake like interior. It was a savoury item I've never had before and definitely can understand why it's popular. I also like the sauces they served with these. Smoked chicken wings were amazing. Chicken had a nice salty, herby rub it was tossed in. It was like all dressed or bbq chip seasoning on top of the chicken which was a bit addicting. Our chicken was a bit over cooked and slightly dry, but it was still great. My partner had the country fried steak. I was going to warn him it probably wasn't his cup of tea but he never tried so there you have it. It was a fried thin steak with some gravy sauce over top. I don't know if that's how it's suppose to taste to be honest so I don't want to really judge it. I personally wouldn't order it. Nevermind if it's how it should taste, I just didn't love the soggy feel to it. The steak was super dry and over cooked. I loved the drink options. They carry a sparking tea made locally and I know they've tried to partner with local artisan drinks. They make milkshake the real way with real kawartha dairy ice cream, which is amazing. I love that they have real Kawartha Dairy ice cream too. The service is 10/10. People are incredibly friendly! The food took a while to come out the kitchen so definitely not an option for rushed dinners, but atleast it's fresh. Personally, I want to support them, but I think it's not my kind of food. Second time stopping by Butchies. Managed to find a lovely seat outside in the sun, no large crowds even for a Sunday afternoon. Service was lovely and quick. Environment was very welcoming. The staff were all nice and even though there was a line almost to the door it was moving quite quickly. Throughout the entire time that we were there, there was almost always a line to the door. The interior is nice, lots of seats. This restaurant has been hyped up in the Durham Region Eats group on Facebook. I decided to give them a try. The restaurant is run by well-known Food Network personality and chef Andrea Nicholson. I did see her working the front of the kitchen, preparing and chopping vegetables. We ordered a bunch of entrées. Most of my family ordered the buttermilk chicken wings, buttermilk chicken tenders, pulled pork sandwich, and country fried chicken steak with white gravy, You have a choice of 1, 2, 3 sides. The pricing reflects the number of sides. Some of the sides require additional charge while the regular sides are fries, mashed potato, mac n cheese, hush puppies, coleslaw, cucumber salad, and green beans. We arrived prior to the lunch rush, it seemed. Only a few customers inside. We were optimistic that our orders would come out pretty fast. We were unfortunately mistaken. We waited about 1 hour for our orders to come out. I understand the food was supposed to be made to order, but it took way too long. I also noticed many take out orders being prioritized and packed up. The kitchen needed a manager to ensure orders are getting prepared as fast as possible. Maybe the owner should have been managing the front of the front of the house instead of chopping broccoli. As for the food, I had the country fried steak with 2 sides, hush puppies, and mac n cheese, $19.50. The white gravy had some bits of bacon. The steak was underseasoned, and the breading was soggy. I think the gravy was a bit too thick, and it seemed like the gravy was sitting there for a while. The sides were decent. Mac n cheese was seasoned well, and a powdery cheese sprinkled on top. The hush puppies freshly fried and were my favourite side. The Remy dipping sauce complimented the hush puppies very well. The buttermilk chicken wings were crispy and came with a buffalo hot dipping sauce. The wings were decent size and meaty. The cucumber salad with dill sauce was pretty good as well. The mashed potatoes were also under-seasoned and didn't come with gravy (extra $3) For my first visit, the overall experience fell short of my expectations. The hype of a Food Network personality running a local restaurant in my neighborhood was the main attraction. I will give them another chance and try their smoked chicken or pork shoulder. read more

Has been my go-to spot for every celebration since it opened. Every birthday for years and my brothers birthdays as well we love it. My two favourites are the chicken fingers and the Nashville hot chicken sandwich. The specials are always fun and a nice change of pace. During the pandemic it was a great source of literal comfort food. The service and ordering can get really busy especially when the weather is nice. It is absolutely worth the wait I promise you. This place is such a gem. Not only is the patio inviting its got great vibes but the menu, the service, the food itself all were wonderful, and the prices are good too. For entrées with two sides and the portions are huge most around $16. They have Kawartha dairy ice cream and ice cream sandwiches and milkshakes, and they also have craft beer and their lemonade taste fresh and homemade and not too sweet or sour but just light and refreshing. We ordered three combos - we had the smoked wings which were pretty good with the dill pickle dip which was outstanding and as a side I got the mac & cheese which was just OK for me not a big fan of the taste. We also got the country fried steak with the white bacon gravy which was pretty good with the fries which was thick cut and just OK it's a seven out of 1 you do put in the Dill pickle sauce it becomes 9/10. For the side we had coleslaw which was pretty good it's not really creamy it's more of a vinaigrette and has a slight kit but we're still pretty good. We also bought the chicken tender combo with the cucumber salad . The chicken tender was really juicy and really tender and also big pieces very surprisingly juicy not the usual frozen kind of texture the breading is good slightly over salted but it was fine. Another great find via yelp! Pulled in parking lot and the smell of smoke meats was enticing! Didn't disappoint once inside. We both had the grilled salmon Sammie...Didn't disappoint. Four of us came to Butchies based on a recommendation, having no other business in Whitby but to try this restaurant. This is a very simple restaurant where you order at the counter and have your food served one of about a dozen tables (based on the photos, they also have outdoor seating in the summer months). The service is quick and adequate and the atmosphere is for all intents and purposes neutral. Butchies is all about the food. They offer a number of southern-style meat dishes such as chicken fried steak and buttermilk fried chicken, and brisket, as well as some daily specials (trout on the day of our visit). Each dish comes with a couple of sides. There is also an impressive selection of craft beer including picks from Little Beasts Brewing Co. which is about 15 minutes away (review to follow). We ordered four meat dishes along with every imaginable side dish and a handful of pints. The food was excellent. Everything is prepared fresh from scratch. The meat is juicy and flavor without being too oily. The sides are rich and comforting. Every aspect of every dish feels like its been generously lubricated in fat (if you know, you know) and flavor. For dessert I had a slice of raspberry rhubarb pie (also made from scratch) with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a cup of tea. The tea was the one bit of the meal where Butchies could use to improve as it was a simple tea bag. Also, some home-brewed iced tea would be great given the southern style of the restaurant. Don't even think about coming to Butchies if you are counting carbs or calories. They don't skimp on the butter. Even the brussels sprouts dish looked to be fried in butter (I doubt I would eat them otherwise to be honest). Butchies hits all the right notes on well prepared southern comfort food. Its not something you can eat every day but its definitively worth coming back for. read more

A modern diner restaurant in Whitby - Butchies serves comfort food. The menu includes your option of a meat plus 1, 2 or 3 sides. You order up at the counter and pay. Staff brings you water, cutlery and food to your table. There aren't any table numbers, they call your name out and you wave them over to you. The restaurant was busy on a Wednesday and staff were still able to navigate and find tables. They also have a wide selection of beers and a huge beautiful patio which I'm sure is buzzing in the summer. Food: 1) buttermilk fried chicken wings - large, deeply fried and tasty but definitely on the oily side. 2) Nashville hot chicken sandwich - a good chicken sandwich hut I was missing the Nashville hot part, it just felt like a conventional hot sauce - like Frank's. We ordered pick up from Butchies for Fathers Day lunch. Although pre ordering the wait was a while but, we understand that holidays can be hectic for sure. We ordered an assortment of meals, country fried steak, chicken tenders, salmon, Mac and cheese, Nashville chicken sandwich, fries, yam fries, cucumber salad. The salmon was very dry and not much flavour unfortunately, chicken tenders were pretty overdone but otherwise, you could say it was a decent meal. We've had Butchies a couple times via delivery due to a new baby but never dined in. The food has always been decent but now out baby is one and we decided to go - in person - with my parents to see what all the hype is about. I follow all the social media accounts and am a fan of the backstory so I have a vested interest and high hopes. The staff are super friendly, the atmosphere quaint and old school. There's great outdoor seating (picnic benches) and you're even allowed to bring your dog. Unfortunately my great dane isn't well enough behaved. We ordered and were sat. Accommodation for the one year old was made quickly with a highchair that attached to the table. Drinks came, one was missed and it was remedied. Here's where the disappointment lay for us. Its a Wednesday. We arrived at 5 pm. Even ran into the owner in the parking lot. Nice lady! Buuuuut our food didn't arrive until 5:45... almost an hour later. Then after we ate my husband (after seeing my dad's pie) decided he also wanted pie. So he order some... literally 35 minutes later and we left without the pie (hubby isn't the type to complain and we had to get the baby back for bedtime... which is at 7pm... which we didn't make it back in time for). Overall, I'd like to come back but Im not sure I'll be able to talk hubby into it. Got to go on a Sunday evening, and decided it was nice enough to sit outside in their beautiful light up patio. They have numerous fire pits so it's a bit cozy. As it was our first time the cashier, was very friendly and offered up suggestions. We got the chicken tenders, fries, Mac n cheese, and the special for that day the lamb burger. Once I walked in, loved the atmosphere like I was back in Saskatchewan. Everybody is so friendly. I brought a couple of friends here who were looking to try something different from their usual fare. What we had was worthy of an updated review. Everything on the menu looked good but we went with the Family Dinner for $42, which includes a choice of two proteins, three sides, and four drinks. We chose the Smoked Chicken (half) and buttermilk Fried Chicken Wings for our proteins, Hush Puppies, Mac 'n' Cheese, and two orders of Poutine (instead of drinks) for our sides. The wings were huge, crispy, crunchy, and delicious! The smoked chicken was perfectly cooked, moist, tender, and had the right amount of smoke. The pickled onions were a good match. The hush puppies were crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and the remoulade was just as delicious as I remembered it. The mac 'n' cheese and poutine were very good and very cheesy. In hindsight, I missed a great opportunity to get some good cheese-pull pictures. Darn! Mental note: next time. I also tried the Butchie's Lager (#damntastybeer) and I liked it. Refreshing. There are lots of other craft beers on the menu, mostly from local brewers. The food was delicious and the service was very good. The portions were very generous and we ended up taking home enough leftovers for two people. The weather was nice but still not warm enough for us to enjoy their large patio with strings of lights overhead. It should be great in the summer, especially when the trees fill in. I wonder if they rent this space for private events. Chef/Owner Andrea Nicholson was there and recognized me from previous visits and a recent encounter at another restaurant. Heard about this place from a friend and I thought I would try it out. The food is mediocre at best but the service was atrocious. The server (as well as the manager) were very short with the customers. This would not have generally bothered me, but they were SUPER rude and disrespectful to an employee from the skip the dishes who came in to pick up an order. Scolding her on multiple occasions & eventually telling her to "just get out and they'll bring the order to her." When I went out to my car, I noticed the interaction continued in such a disrespectful manner with the employee going out of her way to be petty and rude. Then the manager came outside yelling and making a scene while the Skip employee politely responded to this exceptionally rude woman. I do have to say that the sides outshone the mains (the hush puppies are honestly stupid good) but I'd still gladly come back again. Butchies was launched in 2017 in the former location of Shake, Rabble and Roll on Whitby's west side. The location boasts the same giant parking lot, lots of indoor seating, Kawartha Dairy Ice Cream and the addition of a patio. It's still a burger joint, but more gourmet than its predecessor. Ordering....You choose a protein(burger, fried chicken, etc) and 1 or more sides. Drinks are not included in the combos. I'm hoping the ordering process gets streamlined, because I've never waited for 10min in a line when there was only 1 couple in front of me. I listened to the staff member repeat how to order 3 times and the customers still had trouble. I'm not sure if it's the signage or if the customers were so hungry that understanding a menu was hard. (Clearly, I was hangry) When I was ordering, I asked to taste one of the beers they have on tap. I was told they couldn't give me a sample because they were not a brewery. I don't know the bylaws in Whitby, but in Toronto restaurants, I can request a sample of any beer on tap and have never been refused. They do have a great craft beer menu though! I went with one of the specials, Burger dressed with Brie and Bacon Jam(Protein + 1 side combo $13 + $3 for the special) with a fountain pop($2.50). There is a great selection of sides instead of just fries or poutine. I went with the watermelon salad that had chunks of watermelon, pear and onion. My friend got the Pulled Chicken Sandwich with Fries($13) and a milkshake($4.25). The burger was a plain beef patty with no seasoning, kinda blah. There was a large slice of brie with sauteed onions and bacon, but I didn't see or taste any bacon jam. My friend enjoyed the pulled chicken. The fries were tasty and the milkshake was super thick. After hearing rave reviews of this place and the chef that opened it, I was a disappointed. A little pricey for burgers and a drink in Whitby, running about $20 per person. I absolutely love southern cooking and BBQ, and aside from a few places in downtown Toronto, it's tough to find places that cook it well. Butchies is not located in downtown Toronto, but in Whitby...and I'll be honest I was sceptical. The food up here is...not amazing. Anyways, we stopped by and I ordered a pulled pork sandwich with mashed potatoes on the side. My partner ordered smoked chicken wings with Mac n cheese, and dirty rice on the side. I got a strawberry milkshake for good measure. All of the food we had was absolutely delicious, the pulled pork sandwich was fantastic. It was a pretty decent size too, and was quite filling. We were really impressed at the quality of everything and the true, southern taste of stuff. I decided to use Skip the Dishes to try something new since i was tied up at work. Well what do you know, I've been meaning to try Butchies for a long time now. I ordered a burger and coleslaw and within 45 minutes it was delivered to my office. The Coleslaw was good, cold, fresh, crisp, but could have used a touch more zip to it. But its not a deal breaker, as i said, it was good. Now the burger, that was excellent. The toppings were fresh, the burger had a nice char nipping the edges and the flavor was excellent, and the bun was melt in your mouth soft. Finally I was able to give this place a try. I always saw this place driving to and from work. Finally made it in. The decor is cute, open and bright. The place serves alcohol, which is a nice little perk after a long day. Based on another review, I got the mack and cheese with my meat +2 option. It was a really good mac and cheese. The other option was french fries, which were nice as well. I got a side of gravy, which was ok. The burger was juicy and well cooked, but it lost it for me because the thing was so messy. You pick your toppings, so I chose a balance of wet and dry. We ordered the Classic Burger, Mac n Cheese, Brussel Sprouts, Hush Puppies, a chocolate peanut butter milkshake and 8 beers to-go. The burger and sides came to just over $29, then we added beers to the order. We ordered 8 beers (cans) and it came to $70 ?!? We are still at home kicking ourselves for not saying anything. I got takeout from here and let's be honest, takeout is not the same as getting the full dining experience of a restaurant but what choice do we have right now? I've been wanting to try this place for a while. I was going to wait until I at least got to go again before leaving a review but I had to say something about their sauces. Oh em gee, their signature sauce is delicious. No wonder they sell bottles of the stuff! I wasn't even expecting to get it with my order. I had actually ordered their dill sauce and thought that was all I was getting... what a wonderful surprise getting to taste the other one. We wanted to try good cuisine choices in Durham region and I wanted to have some smoke meat options so we decided to give this place a try...When looking at the restaurant out and in, its nothing fancy and appealing, but of course hoping the food is going to be good. We ordered from the staff in the front and grabbed our seat and a staff attendant will bring your orders to you. We ordered the following: Nashville Fried Chicken Sandwich w/ One Side ($14)- Nice fried chicken that has a tang to the bite...Complimented with a coleslaw on the sandwich...Nice juicy sandwich.. We picked the 'buttered mash potato'...This side is good! Creamy, soft, smooth and buttery... I followed the recommendation of the staff by ordering the Smoked Pork Shoulder w/ 3x Sides ($21)- The pork shoulder is lightly shredded with a bit of a char on it...Unfortunately there was a good part of it that was too charred and hard for me to eat (dryness), but there was certain parts that had some tenderness and juice to it... I inform the staff about this, and they're very friendly and apologetic about the dissatisfaction and was willing to bring us another batch or something we can enjoy...We decided on the chicken fingers... Don't sleep on these, as they're usually a staple dish for kids, but I'd say these are one of the better chicken fingers I've had...Nice breading, chicken was nicely seasoned, and juicy. You get 6x pieces or so... We also picked the 3x sides which were 'Mac & Cheese', 'Brussel Sprouts', and 'Crispy Yams' extra cost of $2.40...All three sides were tasty i'd say... Overall we're pleased with the friendly staff and service, and the sides we picked were all pretty good overall...Yes, the chicken fingers are quite good as well, whether its for your kids or adults...Will come back in the future!
