July 20, 2024 - Nashville chicken sandwich + Home Cut Fries + Sorbet Float
Ann B.

July 2, 2024 - My friend treated me to lunch. Thank you Keisha I've passed by this restaurant quite a few times, but was never able to visit. The staff were all nice and even though there was a line almost to the door it was moving quite quickly. Throughout the entire time that we were there, there was almost always a line to the door. The interior is nice, lots of seats. We ordered: 1 Nashville Chkn + Hand Cut Fries 1 Sorbet Float 1 Nashville Chkn + Hush Puppies *Remy Dip* 1 CPB Shake The Nashville chicken was thick and nicely fried, for me it was a bit too salty. I'm definitely going to go back and try something different.

This restaurant has been hyped up in the Durham Region Eats group on Facebook. I decided to give them a try. The restaurant is run by well-known Food Network personality and chef Andrea Nicholson. I did see her working the front of the kitchen, preparing and chopping vegetables. We ordered a bunch of entrées. Most of my family ordered the buttermilk chicken wings, buttermilk chicken tenders, pulled pork sandwich, and country fried chicken steak with white gravy, You have a choice of 1, 2, 3 sides. The pricing reflects the number of sides. Some of the sides require additional charge while the regular sides are fries, mashed potato, mac n cheese, hush puppies, coleslaw, cucumber salad, and green beans. We arrived prior to the lunch rush, it seemed. Only a few customers inside. We were optimistic that our orders would come out pretty fast. We were unfortunately mistaken. We waited about 1 hour for our orders to come out. I understand the food was supposed to be made to order, but it took way too long. I also noticed many take out orders being prioritized and packed up. The kitchen needed a manager to ensure orders are getting prepared as fast as possible. Maybe the owner should have been managing the front of the front of the house instead of chopping broccoli. As for the food, I had the country fried steak with 2 sides, hush puppies, and mac n cheese, $19.50. The white gravy had some bits of bacon. The steak was underseasoned, and the breading was soggy. I think the gravy was a bit too thick, and it seemed like the gravy was sitting there for a while. The sides were decent. Mac n cheese was seasoned well, and a powdery cheese sprinkled on top. The hush puppies freshly fried and were my favourite side. The Remy dipping sauce complimented the hush puppies very well. The buttermilk chicken wings were crispy and came with a buffalo hot dipping sauce. The wings were decent size and meaty. The cucumber salad with dill sauce was pretty good as well. The mashed potatoes were also under-seasoned and didn't come with gravy (extra $3) For my first visit, the overall experience fell short of my expectations. The hype of a Food Network personality running a local restaurant in my neighborhood was the main attraction. I will give them another chance and try their smoked chicken or pork shoulder.

We had Butchies tonight and wow what a meal!!! Definitely has that southern country style home cooking taste and style to it I had the pulled pork sandwich with two sides being the hush puppies and the crispy yams The hush puppies were super awesome and tasty and the dip that went along with was yummo!!! The yams had a nice lil spicy dip that went along with it and gave them a nice taste to it My wife had the crispy buttermilk chicken strips with fries and a Caesar salad The chicken strips were crispy and tender Overall the meal itself was satisfying and filling Definitely a place to go when you want that home style cooked meal Will definitely go back again!!!

Second review for Butchies and once again....another winner. This week they had a special of pork&beans with jalapeño cornbread....i can't say enough good things. This place has great bbq and everything is delicious! Portions are big! For the amount of people they have walking in and out and staying their service is fast! Come check them out.

Excellent service, friendly staff, went on a Wednesday evening, busy but enough seating available. Busy because this place is so great. The fries are crispy and really good. Cucumber salad is creamy and tasty. Will have to go back to try more sides. I very much enjoyed the hush puppies and dip. Please go and try Butchies.

Another great find via yelp! Pulled in parking lot and the smell of smoke meats was enticing! Didn't disappoint once inside. We both had the grilled salmon Sammie...Didn't disappoint. Had a nice remoulade sauce. You could choose 1, 2 or 3 sides. I got the cucumber salad. Nice big chunks of cuke in a light mayo dill sauce. My husband's green beans ew nice.. needed just a little more tenderness. Overall excellent.

My go-to at Butchies is the Buttermilk Chicken Fingers and Broccoli Salad. I also get the Creamy Dill Dip. Ordering is pretty straightforward, you walk up to the counter and order your meat + 1, 2, 3 sides. It takes a bit of time for them to make and bring you your order. They have plenty of seating and parking. The patio is huge and pet friendly. Checkout my IG Foodie Account @wanderandeatwithme for more foodie adventures.

Four of us came to Butchies based on a recommendation, having no other business in Whitby but to try this restaurant. This is a very simple restaurant where you order at the counter and have your food served one of about a dozen tables (based on the photos, they also have outdoor seating in the summer months). The service is quick and adequate and the atmosphere is for all intents and purposes neutral. Butchies is all about the food. They offer a number of southern-style meat dishes such as chicken fried steak and buttermilk fried chicken, and brisket, as well as some daily specials (trout on the day of our visit). Each dish comes with a couple of sides. There is also an impressive selection of craft beer including picks from Little Beasts Brewing Co. which is about 15 minutes away (review to follow). We ordered four meat dishes along with every imaginable side dish and a handful of pints. The food was excellent. Everything is prepared fresh from scratch. The meat is juicy and flavor without being too oily. The sides are rich and comforting. Every aspect of every dish feels like its been generously lubricated in fat (if you know, you know) and flavor. For dessert I had a slice of raspberry rhubarb pie (also made from scratch) with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a cup of tea. The tea was the one bit of the meal where Butchies could use to improve as it was a simple tea bag. Also, some home-brewed iced tea would be great given the southern style of the restaurant. Don't even think about coming to Butchies if you are counting carbs or calories. They don't skimp on the butter. Even the brussels sprouts dish looked to be fried in butter (I doubt I would eat them otherwise to be honest). Butchies hits all the right notes on well prepared southern comfort food. Its not something you can eat every day but its definitively worth coming back for.

Modern diner vibe
Farheen S.

A modern diner restaurant in Whitby - Butchies serves comfort food. The menu includes your option of a meat plus 1, 2 or 3 sides. You order up at the counter and pay. Staff brings you water, cutlery and food to your table. There aren't any table numbers, they call your name out and you wave them over to you. The restaurant was busy on a Wednesday and staff were still able to navigate and find tables. They also have a wide selection of beers and a huge beautiful patio which I'm sure is buzzing in the summer. Food: 1) buttermilk fried chicken wings - large, deeply fried and tasty but definitely on the oily side. 2) Nashville hot chicken sandwich - a good chicken sandwich hut I was missing the Nashville hot part, it just felt like a conventional hot sauce - like Frank's. Nashville hot is typically a hot cayenne oil, this one had barely any heat. Sides: Mac and cheese - 4/5, creamy and yummy Fries - 5/5 thick and delicious Brussels sprouts - 4/5, delicious but not crispy enough for my liking The pies also looked delicious but we didn't get a chance to try as we were full. Prices are good as well, we paid $29 for both meals (add tip on top).

We ordered pick up from Butchies for Fathers Day lunch. Although pre ordering the wait was a while but, we understand that holidays can be hectic for sure. We ordered an assortment of meals, country fried steak, chicken tenders, salmon, Mac and cheese, Nashville chicken sandwich, fries, yam fries, cucumber salad. The salmon was very dry and not much flavour unfortunately, chicken tenders were pretty overdone but otherwise, you could say it was a decent meal. Probably won't be in a rush to go back .. however, it was OK if you're looking for something different to try (and I see other reviewers have really enjoyed things so maybe volume got the best of them today.

Customer Service: For a busy place, the staff were very friendly and offered suggestions. The ambiance was nice and the service was quick. Patio is cute in the summer, it really provides a memorable experience Food: I've been here a few times and tried their fried chicken wings and country fried steak with white bacon gravy. For sides, I got the mac n cheese (my favourite) and baba's cucumber salad. Everything was fire, I loved it. The salad was creamy and tasty. If there's one con, I'd have to say that the breading on the country fried steak and chicken was too much.

Every dish I had was very good. For this meal I ordered something different, the shrimp stuffed catfish. Never had catfish so this dish was calling me. Service was very good. Our waitress was chatty and was joking around with us which was fun. Ambiance is more on the rustic side almost had a saloon feel, partly because of the old building but it was quaint. There was plenty of free parking in the rear which was convenient. Captain's Boil, the formulaic chain would be the floor and the one I really enjoyed, Lobster Boil Seafood House, in North York would be the ceiling. What I'm about to say about Sea Salt would definitely leave their management a bit "salty". Unequivocally, Sea Salt sits in the deep basement of the pecking order. Sea Salt's standing was easily determined after my first spoonful of the seafood broil. The sauce was their downfall as they went overboard with the of garlic and not to mention they burnt the garlic. As the Cajun sauce is the soul of a seafood boil, their sauce literally ruined the entire dish and experience. The combo we ordered came with fried calamari and shrimp and fries. The fried calamari and shrimp lacked a bit of "salt", which is rather ironic considering the restaurant's name and neither of the sauce complimented (sweet chilli and ranch) the calamari well. The fries were what you expected it to be. But a little bit too much sauce. The one thing that I liked was you could choose to have the Turkish Salaam Cola as part of your combo drink choice. I didn't think it was all that different from regular cola, but it was nice to try. Service is quite slow here and not super attentive. We had to flag them down various times to get things that should have been provided. We weren't given enough plates to start and we had to request for bibs and disposable gloves. These are pretty standard things at other boil places. In general, the appetizers were better than the seafood boil. The portion of the combo was pretty good so we packed some of it to go. But to put things into perspective, the following day I reheated the food for lunch, and my two kids didn't even touch it (with one of them who had experienced Lobster Boil Seafood house). That tells you something!

I thought the fish tacos had a kick of spice added but they were still good. The fries were crispy, which I loved but the highlight for me has to be the shrimp. I loveeeeed the sea salt sauce. Service was still very attentive during this time. Our appetizers included: complimentary bread, escargot and shrimp, cajun calamari, and a large ceasar salad Our drinks: coffee martini, cosmopolitan, and lychee martini Our mains: trout and scallops, pickerel and shrimp, and seafood di mare The appetizers were great, and the large salad was enough to feed 3 people (could have fed a 4th as we had leftovers). The star in this bunch was really the escargot and shrimp. It came with a buttery sauce that was good with the complimentary bread. The oysters were also fresh and came with salsa and horse radish topping to choose from. The calamari, while good, was overshadowed by the others. It was meant to have a cajun taste, but I did not get that flavouring coming through, but it was still a good app regardless. For the drinks, the lychee martini seemed to be a favourite given the amount of alcohol while the cosmo seemed light on it. So if you're looking for a martini with a fruity kick, I'd recommend going to the lychee martini. The coffee one tasted more like coffee, but it may have been masking the amount of alcohol based on its strong flavor. For the mains, all three were excellent. The seafood di mare is very decadent and heavy. After eating so many appetizers, I barely had any bites, but it did make for some great leftovers.

Parking seemed limited at first, but there's more available in the back. Just a tip: be careful not to miss the entrance, since exiting is a one-way street and re-entering can be tricky. We arrived around 6:45 pm and saw a small line with two groups ahead, but the place is much bigger than it looks from the outside and we were seated quickly in a comfortable booth for four. The pub was clean, and I was especially surprised at how spacious and tidy the washrooms were--not what I usually expect from a pub, which tend to feel older and worn. The menu is huge, and TVs are everywhere--even in our booth. Between us, we tried a good range of dishes: 1. Caprese Salad with Steak - nicely balanced with pesto, though the steak was a little dry. 2. Fish and Chips - incredible portion for $18! Crispy, perfectly cooked fish with fries, coleslaw, and even a Caesar salad. The fries were well-seasoned (no ketchup needed), coleslaw was enjoyable despite me usually not liking it, and the Caesar was delicious. 3. Mexican Salad - flavorful, fresh, and generous in portion. 4. Tuesday Wing Special - wings were $0.90 each, so I ordered 15 with a Coke Zero. The garlic Parmesan was disappointing--dry and lacking flavor--but the Buffalo ranch wings were tender and spot-on. Service was friendly, though our waitress could have been more proactive with drink and water refills. Overall, I was impressed.
