I just have to say, Butera is a gem of a grocer. We just recently started going there out of convenience with the location of our boys child care. All their produce is top notch. They have culturally authentic brands for everything. It is clean and organized. Their butcher does a great job and is friendly and personable with our family as we walk through his area, having conversations with my 2 year old about his chocolate milk selection. AND I spend less there than Walmart or Jewel, for better products. This is what a grocery store should be: quality and personable customer service. Spend all your money here. I am not entirely sure why people think Butera has good prices. They most certainly do not. I have found far better deals at Woodman's. I would go so far as to say that it cost almost twice as much as Woodman's. I found the staff to also be incredibly rude, and possibly even downright nasty. I couldn't find the bacon, and I asked one of the employees at the meat counter, who rolled his eyes at me, mumbled something and pointed across the store, then proceeded to walk away and refused to clarify. Ridiculous. I went to purchase bubba burgers and not thinking about it I grabbed 2 boxes of 6 burgers. Got to the register and my bill was waaaay over what I expected. I asked the woman how much that box was, she said $26.99 I said per box?! No way, I said there is a mistake, asked her to check the price. I've purchased these many times and they cost roughly between 13-15 a box. Sure enough, that's what they cost at Butera. I told the woman to forget it I can buy it cheaper somewhere else. Never work for butera. Got hired for the deli and was doing great until I was fired a week later for "complaints" when I know for sure it was a staffing problem with the deli manager when my hours were constantly getting cut only a week in. I had not a single problem with a customer and was always on time. The hiring process was lazy and unprofessional, no training was needed even for the meat slicers. The store itself is also just very dirty and unorganized, go elsewhere for a job and food. read more

I went to Butera's in Lindenhurst IL while walking around I kept smelling a foul odor. As I approached the meat counter that's where the odor came from. It smelled like dried up blood!! Not only that but as I looked the butcher area over it was filthy dirty!!! Where is the health department? They need to go there to inspect not once but often to make sure they are in compliance! This is my "go to" store for everything. It is (I believe) part of Piggly Wiggly? They have a huge fresh produce department with extremely affordable prices. It is definitely a "local" store. The deli has by far the cheapest prices on meats and cheeses anywhere. They always also had you a sample which I love. Also before they start just slicing away they ASK how you would like your meat / cheese sliced and then show you to make sure it is how you want it. They also have a HUGE meat department with some pre-made, pre-marinated items that are always good. The meat department carries beef from the US and Mexico (clearly labeled). The meat from Mexico is cheaper, but I've had good luck with it. Also you can find things there that you will never see anywhere else. (Like natural casings for making your own sausages) ((yes I do that)) They also have a fairly large gluten free section. The people who work there are ALWAYS friendly. They are all locals. Many kids. I like that the management doesn't make them cover up their tattoos and piercings (many other stores I have seen this). I think this makes them more comfortable with the customers. They are all great and if lines are running long are fast to open a new line (correctly by taking people in the order they were in) which you see almost nowhere. I really do love my local grocer. On a side note- you will often see the manager stocking shelves along side of his employees. This goes a long way in my book. read more

Let me start by saying..the prices here can't be beat. If you are looking for the cheapest prices (for the most part) and a large variety of generic brands, this is for you. They also have a nice selection of ethnic foods. Now for the downsides.... Dirty, produce is hit or miss, mostly a miss, and most (not all) of the staff that works here is a joke. Once I actually had the uncomfortable pleasure of listening to the cashier and the bagger talk about her "hook up" last night and how they were both so hungover. Really? Aside from being awkward and feeling very unwelcome, there was never a hello, please or thank you that left their lips. Though this was an extreme example, the feeling unwelcome part happens about 95% of the time. I live literally a block away, but do not use them as a main grocery store, only for the occasional I just need milk type purchase. read more

I have been to Butera many times and have bought food that is rotten, and well beyond there useful date. They continue to put foods out that are expired or bad and hope that nobody takes the time to return it because of the hassle. What's not to like? I like the feel of an older grocery store style and the selection is really good. No complaints here.

My husband always wants me to shop at this store and location. And I hate it. The store is always filthy. And smells weird. Most of the staff there is typically pretty nice, but there are others that are very rude. I had a difficult purchase today, and one employee was being very helpful and nice, although we were both kind of confused. She had a ton of patience. The woman who was helping her though was NOT. Try and find a cheaper price for Krakus deli ham, or milk! Their home-made spicy Italian Sausage is the best. Wonderful deals on meat. The only problem is that a lot of times, certain meat department items advertised are not in stock, i.e. home-made chorizo, pot roast. If the meat department is open when you visit, kindly ask them, more than likely there's a good chance they may have it "in back". Otherwise late night shoppers are out of luck. read more

I used to shop here for the produce, deli , and the meats. But I was there last week and I think the Health department should investigate as you could smell "Bad meat" coming for the butcher area. I personally know one of the butchers there and he is very helpful but lately the store (since Piggly Wiggly) took over it has been going down hill. I can't shop for food if the store (only in the meat department) is making me feel sick. Perhaps the Head butcher should explain why it smells so bad. read more

I have been going to your Lindenhurst location for the past several years.....probably since it changed from the Eagle chain. I am a very educated consumer and also understand that I get what I pay for at that store. I also frequent Dominicks and Jewel that is not that far from the Lindenhurst location. Throughout these years, I have experience such horrible customer service and lack of such. All of these years, I have never been greeted, asked if I needed help, or acknowledge my presence when I tried for any assistance. It has been on many occasions that when I wanted fresh produce and an employee was working/cleaning/restocking that section....they would not get out of the way for me to access/purchase...just completely ignoring that I was even there. The deli counter employees always seem like they hate their jobs and the customers that frequent them. The new butcher counter is a joke......its for show. Nobody there wants to wait/serve you. They see you and the keep butchering meat and could care less what you want. Not only did I experience the above mentioned normal, I had a delight at the checkout. HORRIBLE. They must be working for less than minimum or rejects from other grocery chains. The cost of same like items or somewhat higher at Dominiks or jewel is well worth it when the total experience is so much better. read more

I've shopped here about 3 times now, and here is my overall review of them. First, they have a pretty good selection, like what you would find at Jewel, except they do not seem to have a seafood section that is as easy to find as the meat department. Next, the plastic bags that they use seem to be much more durable and are great for reusing. I tried a couple items from their Deli section, but I did not have a good experience with their Guacamole. It came with the pit, which I think helped keep it from browning. However, it had a very bland flavor. I had to add to it to help give it flavor, but I think it also needed a couple days for it to ripen more. The chips I used to enjoy this were also not so great, as they seemed to be starting to get stale. The only other negative experience I seem to get from here is the lack of staff friendliness. When I heard that it was 'family owned' I got the feeling that they would be super friendly and would give off a warm, homey feeling. However, when I would go to the checkout, I felt more like an outsider who did not exist. No one said, "Hello" or "How are you?" or "Did you find everything you need?" They would chat with each other, but I would feel little to no acknowledgement. When I would go to leave, I would get maybe a "Have a nice day" but no "Thank you" or anything. Jewel does a much better job at being friendly, even when I can tell that they are fake greetings. At least they acknowledge my existence! For convenience sake, I think I will continue to go here (especially since Round Lake Beach has the construction going on by the Jewel) but it would be nice if the staff members could be more friendly. read more

Butera is a fine grocery store. It is small enough that you can get in and out (if that's what you want to do) but large enough to carry a good selection of items, many of them ethnic that are difficult to find elsewhere. The Deli ROCKS. Be prepared to wait, it is a very popular place due to prices and selection, so there is often a wait. The produce is usually decent, sometimes the discounted items need to be eaten quickly, but, there's a reason it's discounted, right? Sale prices are competitive. I used to work at Butera for over 3 years. DO not spend your 3 dollars on $2.99lb turkey or roast beef, over 6 months old and frozen. They defrost the meats in the sink all day. They use old, used, dirty rags to clean the slicers. If there's mold or any dried out expired meat, their solution? Chop it off. Then sell it for reduced, meat or cheese ends. I refused to serve my customers with that, got written up for "wasting" more then 2 months of outdated products on either the shelf or the front case display. CHECK YOUR DATES, SMELL YOUR MEAT. poor management, they do not care about your complaints. Just laugh behind your back and no solution solved. They don't care about their employees. Oh, the meat department? I have gone too the health department numerous of times, slabs for frozen meat sit in the cart, in the back of the store by the trash room door ALLL DAY AND ALL NIGHT. Blood just traveling all over the ground from it defrosting, so sickening and it smells. They use that for their ground beef, Italian sausages. Not to mention, the outdated meats from the department they don't throw away. They grind it up for their ground beef and sausages. I got sent home twice, one for refusing to make carnitas when the pork was green and smelly. I got into an argument with the meat manager about it. The other time I got sent home, I was honest with a customer. She was upset with the look of her 2.99lb butterball turkey, I told her it was frozen before. She didn't want to buy it. The solution of dropping their deli meat on the floor is to rinse it off with water, you see them drop the meat? Tell them to throw it away in front of you. I did get in trouble for throwing it away all times. The deli manager is so rude and bash talks about her employees and customers. Not to mention racist, she refused to hire a few different people of the opposite race "if I hired a black person, I'll be on Judy Butera's bad side" very unfortunate, I then quit as soon as I found my worth. Very poor atmosphere, not honest with customers. The employees never want to help serve you, just very rude people. Just be careful, they never clean. Watch out for the rat traps laying around under the aisle shelves and in the back. Flies and ants, everywhere. Just a very dirty place. Dust and mold. I regret ever working there, I didn't have the money at the time and you know, you gotta do what you gotta do to take care of yourself. If you're a yuppy looking for a boutique, shop somewhere else. If you're looking for a variety of different grocery items at good prices, Butera is the best in the Lake Villa/Lindenhurst area. This is more of a family grocery store than a place for singles to go shopping. There's no trendy/hipster decor, just plenty of coupons and a large variety of food you won't find at Jewel/Wal-Mart/Target who all sell the same junk as one another. Some of the employees have a bit of an attitude problem and are ready to give you their opinion whether you want it or not. Good Evening. I don't normally write letters when I have an issue with a company. Please let that show just how much my experience tonight at your Lindenhurst location disturbed my family and I. It was 8:45 pm on Friday night. My wife and I needed a few things and we like to go to our local store because it is small and has almost everything we need. Tonight we were greeted by three men just inside the door. One man said we will be closing in 15 minutes. I said that is fine we just need a few things and we went in and proceeded to get our purchases. As we were heading to the cash register, a stock boy went by us and announced that we were the last ones. We had already felt rushed by our greeting at the front door and now we were feeling uncomfortable. We have our receipt and the time we checked out was 8:55 pm. This shows that we were not stalling and we were trying to be respectful of the closing time. As we were in line and about to pay, the cashier said to the bag boy "Is he (the manager at the front door) going to keep letting people in?" The bagger said "probably until 9:00." This made us feel even more uncomfortable and my wife said to me "I will let you get the change because I'm feeling uncomfortable." I got to the car and asked my wife if she wanted me to go say something? She told me no but I could see she was bothered. I decided to call the manager. I called as we were driving home. I asked for the manager. The manager answered the phone and identified himself as Ron. I told him that we could shop anywhere but we like our local store. I then proceeded to say that we did not like the feeling we got when we were greeted by the Gestapo at the front door and told we only had 15 minutes, but I could not even finish my sentence before I was cut off. He then said that that was him and he was told by corporate to do this. I said corporate told you to do that? He said "yes." I said ok well then I will call corporate on Monday and tell them about our experience. He cut me off again and abruptly said that's fine my name is Ron and he hung up on me. Wow. How rude. I work as a manager and I would never treat a customer that way. I want you to know I was not rude and I did not swear or have attitude. The worst thing I said was calling the three men at the front door that made us feel unwelcomed the Gestapo. I don't think we will be returning to Butera for quite a while, if at all. I will also be telling my friends, coworkers, and family about my experience and urge them not to patronize your establishments. I will also share my experience with the social media. Please understand that this is the 3rd time in my life that I have ever written a bad review. I hope that you discuss the importance of treating all customers with respect and make them feel welcomed. I would also let them know that 1 customer can lead to a loss of 10 or more by word of mouth and more with social media reviews. I would also give Ron a serious talking to and maybe some training. The last thing is; if you would like your customer to stop spending money and out of the store by 9:00 pm, then you should close at 8:30 and make announcements on the PA system for the shoppers to make their final selections and please check out.
