I bought a bakery item, (brownie bites) that had a large $5 sticker on it. There was also a freshness/expiration? date sticker on it. The date was March 18, I bought it on March 3rd. On March 7, I opened the package and immediately found that there was grey, fuzzy mold on the product. That was when I also discovered that there was another freshness sticker UNDER the March date. That "first" sticker was February 16. This disgusts me. And believe me, it's not the $5 issue, but the deception. AND this is not the first time I have experienced this, at this store. About 4 years ago, I purchased a specialty cheese that had two stickers on it. The section mgr. simply grabbed a new package, marked it "No Charge," handed it to me and took the re-labeled from me. I was here today and I was getting food from the Hot Bar and I noticed that one of the tongs used to pick up food fell into the corn (handle first). I guess this is a reasonable thing to happen and go unnoticed but my issue is that when I informed an employee, all she did was replace the tongs with a new clean one. She was about to walk away but I stopped her and told her that the entire thing of corn needs to be thrown out and replaced, fortunately she listened to me and took the entire container of corn out and brought it to the back to (I assume) be replaced with a new one but just the fact that their employees are not trained on what to do if the Hot Bar food gets contaminated like this is a major red flag. I know a lot of people do not wash their hands before touching the tongs and scoopers at the hot bar. For example, I saw someone who does construction and he had dried concrete all over his hands walking around the store as if that was normal. Also I was looking at the containers of pasta from the deli area and some of them had way too much oil put in them. They are priced by weight, not only does this make them cost more as you are paying for that oil that you cannot eat, it also makes the pasta much more unhealthy as it is not recommended to eat that oil. Also I am concerned about how often they change out the food from the hot bar because one time about a year ago, I got food here and the rice was rock hard and the potatoes were extremely stale. I went up to the service desk to speak to somebody about this issue but nobody was there. Something I do like about shopping here is that the store is much more modern than the Jewel on the South East side of the property, it looks more inviting and the employees uniforms are much better looking than Jewel's. Also some of the employees are really helpful and have nice personalities, especially the cashier named Jen or Jennifer. My favorite cashier was named Keel but I haven't seen her in over a year. It's like they found a whole bunch of people who were picked on in high school in some support grepup and hired them on the promise that they could take their pent up anger out on the customers. My family and I were in the self checkout. My son did his items first. We clearly had more groceries to pay for. The 2 Hispanic girls that were there helping self checkout proceeded to come over and close our register down when we still had more items to purchase. They said nothing and just gave us dirty looks. I'm not sure why they were so nasty because we had been polite, respectful and appreciative of when she helped my son with his transaction. read more

After giving me good service on one day the next day very similiar circumstances, He refused to give me a break on a product that was on sale at one size that they did not have but a smaller size was available. instead of a 24 pack that was not available I tried to get 2 - 12 packs for the sale price. He had me wait while he went ot back only to come back and say "that he couldn't give me the deal i was asking for" . Every time I visit this store its an aggravating waste of time. They can't stock what they still carry, and basic nationwide brands have limited selection, they went through and did a cost cutting skew reduction, which translates to, you have to shop 3 different stores to get what you used to here in one trip. Have brought the stock issue to the management 3 times and it still persists, there is no shortage of the products at other Marianos locations. Avoid this store if possible. read more

Every time we go shopping on the weekend the store is out of everything we need. The produce section is decimated, the produce that is there are the ones no one wants and there seems to be no restocking. You have to go at 6am in Saturday morning or there's nothing left. Typically we try to go early Saturdays but the last couple of months since the weather has been nice we've had other plans, so we've been going early (like 7-8am) Sunday mornings and there's NOTHING. We moved here from out of state a year and a half ago and we love the selection they do have when it's there, but we would like the option to go grocery shopping on either Saturday OR Sunday mornings. Hopefully they get it together. Another thing that I'm not thrilled about are some of the staff... the deli department always seems pretty unfriendly, with the exception of a few people and there is a young blonde girl who works in the coffee area who has no manners or customer service, she's been quite rude a few times. I'll update with her name once I get it, but for management she was working this morning (5/12/19) and has a blonde ponytail and is probably about 17-19. Someone should talk to her about her overall attitude/customer service and facial expressions when assisting people. All I want is a nice place to shop with options, maybe we will be going back to Jewel. read more

Pretty disappointed in their fresh popped popcorn. I decided to give their $3 kettle corn a try. It looks delicious but boy was I wrong. There was a lot where it was super salty. Yuck! And some were burnt. Totally ruined my desire to munch on these. Now it's just sitting on the kitchen counter hoping someone else will eat it... Aka BF... (Doc's Popcorn in Gurnee Mills isnt bad!) Besides their waaay too salted popcorn, I still frequent marianos because of the good variety of foods they carry. I would use to buy their muffins / pastry at the vernon hills location since they make it fresh there. But I have a feeling the gurnee location gets theirs delivered from vernon hills so sometimes even tho the sell by date is still good, the pasty in it isn't.... So be careful when getting those! Its always a bummer bringing home delicious looking pastry only to know that after the first bite, its been sitting in the store for awhile... blah! Their hot foods selection is great too if you want something quick to eat. They also have OK sushi. Two things always get when I'm there is their fresh squeezed orange juice and their ROUNDYS brand organic milk! Tastes so much better than the brands you find at jewel or Walmart. After going to the brand new Mariano's in Crystal Lake then stopping here at the store in Gurnee, what a difference. The store in Crystal Lake is huge and filled with unique products and services. Walking into the Gurnee store was like walking back to an 80's grocery store. It is located in I believe an old Dominick's store. It looks like they just swept it out and set up store. They still had the great Mariano's prices but not as much of a shopping experience. read more

Will NOT be returning. This is my 4th time coming to this Mariano's with the same passive aggressive customer service. I enter, and being the kind customer I am I say hello to the manager (half bald man) and 2 other employees . They're all by the front door because the employee apparently broke the automated door. The manager then looks at me like I'm crazy for saying hello. And then doesn't say anything back just stares. I then go to shop and search for my items. We are in a pandamic! Yesterday 10/31/2020 I went to Mariano's to get a few items for breakfast. I was totally shocked and appalled when I witness a deli / hot food employee with no mask on. She was preparing food for the public. When we spoke to the manager he stated she's exempt from wearing a mask. I get it, some people cant wear a mask, but Mariano's could not find another dept for this lady to work in??? She was preparing food! She was talking over the food she was preparing!! THIS IS TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE!! She was not the only employee wearing the mask incorrectly. I also had to tell the older women in the meat dept, please cover your nose while you are serving open food. I will never shop at Gurnee's Marinano's again. Please train your managers and staff on wearing the mask correctly!!! LUNCH BREAK We decided to swing in here for a lunch break while riding roller coasters at 6 Flags. There is plenty of parking in the lot and a ton of food samples inside. Walking through the door we were hit with tiny cups of fresh squeezed OJ. Don't mind if I do! Dear Bob Mariano I've got a great cross marketing idea. Why not add a little Tito's Vodka in there too. I think it's a great idea. A tipsy shopper always buys more. We grabbed a bowl of soup for the little one. There were a ton of hot soups to choose from. We finally decided on the creamy chicken wild rice soup. I must admit it was very good besides it being overly salty. Unfortunately all processed soups are giant buckets of salt but what are you going to do when you're on the road. After grabbing a bowl of soup which is incredibly hot. I didn't grab a cart and had to adjust the bowl several times to avoid my fingers from burning off. While heading to the deli counter we were offered some cheese chunks and some duck liver pate on crackers. Sure Mariano's you're twisting my arm now but I'm game. We grabbed a number at the deli counter. There were about 20 people in front of us. It seemed like all of Gurnee was shopping today. Mariano's had a large crew behind the counter, so it moved fast. We were lucky enough to get Keisha. She was incredible and treated us with amazing 5 star service. I am a big sucker for great customer service and Keisha delivered. Thank you so much. I can only hope on my next trip to the deli counter that I have you wait on us. We grabbed some low sodium turkey breast and low sodium Swiss cheese along with three buns. Our intentions were to make sandwiches. We also grabbed some bananas for dessert. After checking out, we sat at one of the tables to build our lunch. Mariano's provides a small area with a few tables. I decided to use the toaster to toast my bread. There are plenty of condiments to choose from like spicy mustard and ketchup. We built our sandwiches and had a great lunch all for under $8. What a great deal. My little one couldn't finish all her soup and luckily she passed it over to me. I was able to have a few spoons. Mariano's offers free cucumber water and I was able to quench my thirst. So next time your looking to grab a quick and affordable lunch, why not build your own. I highly recommend you visit a Mariano's anywhere because it's like the Disneyland of grocery stores. read more

A couple of things have changed since the remodel of this favored Dominick's to the popular and growing Mariano's. First, they hired a lot more friendly people and made them wear white shirt uniforms with narrow black ties. Alas! some of my favored old supermarket friends are no longer there. Second, they added a lot more on-premises take out options for customers like a grilled meat station, smoothie station, hot and cold salad bar stations, a gelato bar, and the Starbucks shop is now their own house brand of coffee. Third, their prices have risen. This isn't Whole Foods territory, but it ain't Aldi either. In fact, it's more than the major competitors within a two block radius. It's still dark inside which somehow translates to fancier while saving on lighting energy bills: how clever! The customer service is absolutely top notch as is the staffing, which probably explains the premium. Then there's more sampling options for food, too. The salad bar is less expensive by $2 per pound than Whole Foods, so that's a better deal. I really like the prepared salads in the deli as well; they are a cut above the local choices. At these rates, it won't replace my other haunts for staples, but I guess that's the price you pay for having a live pianist serenade you while you fondle the tomatoes. read more

Marianos is new to this area and has set up shop where Dominick's used to be. One of the many Dominick's ~ Mariano conversions. I have been going to the Libertyville/ Vernon Hills location so having one just down the road is nice. Mariano's has an upscale feel to it. Specifically, they seem to have a sense of pride and focus as they are clean, fresh, competitive and friendly. A few things that struck me... -They did not rearrange the basic layout and item locations too much. If you shopped at this location when it was Dominick's you will have little time to acclimate. The aesthetics of the place is is very similar to the old Dominick's given their prior remodel. -Lots up employees around and they are easy to spot, eager to help and seem to be pretty well trained...almost as good as Sunset. (That's a compliment). -The meat and fish counter seem to be a big step up from Dominick's. Quality looks good and just appears fresher. Good variety. Produce looks good. -The liquor area appears no bigger than the old Dominick's was. I wish it were bigger but the store is just not as big as the Libertyville location. -The items in the aisles seem to be laid out well. It's easier to see and find things than the old Dominick's. There are a few items I would like to see but did not...like pizza dough, Frontera marinades and Acacia Honey etc. -The coffee and eat-in area is small and does not look all too comfy. Would be great if it were bigger, had some stuffed chairs or couches and had some windows. In all I like the new Mariano's. I think it looks promising and will be a patron...but I'm not discounting Jewel just yet. Jewel has been showing a sense of urgency addressing the same prior short-sided decisions that Safeway imposed on the Dominick's brand. I will show my loyalty to the brand that shows a sense of dedication and loyalty to this community and my needs. Go Mariano's! ;-) read more

I will always be a fan of Mariano's! From the customer service to the quality of the foods... I did go during opening day and the crowds were insane!! The place was wall to wall eye candy of fresh choices. I usually judge my grocery stores by the produce section first and foremost and this place did not disappoint. When the fruits and veggies are flawless and lined up calling you like an OCD employee organized it, I will be there! I can find some of the more rare items since I cook a ton. The fish! Oh man, the seafood selection!? It's hard enough to find fresh non-smelling fish but the quality and selection is second to none. From Chilean Sea Bass to Mahi Mahi to soft shell crabs to even the large Prawns!! This will be a frequent visit for me just for these two areas. Plus, the entrance to the produce section has a fresh smoothie bar! read more

I am reviewing a year later, I used to come to this store often, my only complaint at the time was the small foot print. However after supporting true local (Jewel), I probably will not come here anymore. The quality is dropping big time with the Mariano's name. It's sad really, it used to be a local company but the Mariano family sold it off to Kroger which I feel is just destroying its past history of better quality with the food, staff, and the layout of the store. Basically it's the old dominiks store with a Mariano's sign slapped on it. The lighting is dim and the decor, etc of the store is not very exciting. The staff are friendly and professional. Lots of one star reviews . That doesn't surprise me. The prices are outrageous in a lot of cases. Quality of things is inconsistent at best. A number of months ago I wanted to buy some eggs, a small area in the store to be sure. The first 6 doz I picked up had broken eggs. I was there yesterday for fruit, their's is certainly better than Woodmans but the 1st 2 bags of cherries I picked up had visibly molded product. $30 for a digital thermometer ($20 max on Amazon), a product made in China for $.50 or less, almost $8 for a 16 bottle of Pepto Bismal, outrageous. I have complained to Kroger about some of the deli dept personnel and there is one individual in the meat dept who seems to feel it is his duty to be a salesperson for the store, too chatty. He tries to urge customers into more expensive product Now let's talk about the bagging function, completely UNTRAINED! No idea of the value or fragility of food. Almost 8# of watermelon on top on 5 peaches and 1 1/2 # of cherries. That is just one example. 6 bottles of port wine bagged in individual paper bottle bags laid in the cart ready to be wheeled to my car. I looked at the bags and the bagger asked, "did you want those in one big bag?". I was lucky with the bottle bags that time. One time 6 bottles of port ($12 each) in one plastic bag, no protection between them. Now, c'mon, what's happended to training and common sense for a pretty easy task? If I could give Mariano's hot grill no stars I would definitely honor them that. I've been a faithful and loyal customer here for the past 5 years. Quite honestly, I particularly go for their grill section for the ribeye steaks. Now before it used to be sautéed onions, bell peppers, and mushrooms that were included with the sandwich. With also the addition of hot peppers from the salad bar with no additional fee or charge. Customer service was grand and full satisfaction was guaranteed. Over the course of some time, I've noticed how much more stricter and hurt they've become. Recently taking away the sautéed veggies and only offering raw deli style ones. Then taking away cheese choices and several other options. I thought of course, you know this could be alright. I mean, I was shocked at first, but I just saw it as long as there were an alternative that everything would be okay. Fast forward to now, the combo meal that I usually get is now half the size. The ribeye steak sandwich I always order is half the portion and the cut is small. The loaf of bread that it used to be served on is now like a slider from White Castle. The cheese is limited to 2 or 3 kinds and the usual chips is not offered with the combo in the "to go box." I asked them several questions about what happened and they simply cannot answer them. I get a confused look... at this point I am disgusted. Of course they want to take away these things from the customer..but can't even get rid of the flies hovering around me as I type this review.. Fact is: 1. I feel as the customer that I am no longer satisfied and happy. 2. I feel that I'm getting swindled into giving them what I thought was a good exchange, but now a clear a bad one. I will start by saying that I have 3 growing boys and I spend on average $600-800/week on groceries at this store. Mariano's is more expensive than all in the area -- but it was my store of choice...so I didn't hesitate with my spend. Up until today, this store got 90% of my business. Today, I was only picking up snacks for friends stopping by and I bought some sushi for myself for lunch. There was a coupon next to the sushi that said $5.00 off sushi with a "minimum spend $35.00" when you buy a "small tray of sushi." FANTASTIC, right? No - at the register I was told the $35 min spend must be with sushi -- THE COUPON DID NOT SAY "with sushi". After a manager was called, and then another manager -- and then another, yes a total of 4 people now, they also told me my small sushi tray wasn't the "small tray of sushi" that the coupon meant. What I assume to be the most senior manager, Dana, told me she would NOT HONOR their coupon. Dana said my tuna-avocado roll was "maki, not sushi". She then said the picture on the coupon was what they meant. (For clarity, the picture was Nigiri, not sushi). First -- even if Mariano's did not design their in-store coupons to represent their intent -- their insistence that they would not honor their FALSE ADVERTISING coupon has meant I will never shop there again. Yes - they lost a loyal customer over 5 bucks. My $600-800/week will no longer support this location. I will go to Jewel-Osco, who has frankly upped their game in a major way. Or I will go to Meijer. I moved my prescriptions from Walgreen's to Mariano's because I could use GoodRx. Mariano's is inconvenient because there is no drive up, but there are other things I liked that made me stay. I am about ready to switch back to Walgreen's as my pharmacy. To get permission to refill a prescripton to DAYS. I didn't receive notification when my prescription was ready for pickup. Trying to update it on line is archaic. When I went in today to pick up script and have my notifications turned back on, the 'float' pharmacist could not assist me in doing that. Really people?! This is the 21st century! I'm on Medicare now, so my prescriptions don't cost me anything - anywhere. I am seriously considering moving back to Walgreen's. read more

There are many things I've stopped shopping for at this store since Kroger took over and today I'm adding sushi to it. You think "why would anyone my sushi at a grocery store?" but it used to be very good and every once in awhile I'd have for lunch. Standards that used to make Mariano's worth the extra several (or more) bucks have gone way down hill. Produce goes bad quicker than other stores, bakery bread loaves are always stale...I once had to return a "made-to-order" sandwich that had bread so stale that the whole sandwich was inedible (like you couldn't get your teeth through it), and the french loaf from last night tasted like it was baked the previous day. Even the once smiling/helpful staff personalities seem to be gone. The last time I went in, my bagger left to check on break times after only bagging a couple of my items and all my other items were there for me to bag. That's not Mariano's serivce. If I wanted to bag my own things, I would have used the self-checkout, or Aldi's. Honestly, it's pretty much like a renamed Dominicks by this point. This review is for the Gurnee location only!!! and if there could be negative stars there would be! I had high hopes that this would be similar to the one in Vernon Hills but not even remotely close. I have given this place far too many chances. I have talked to managers, I have talked to corporate, I have filled out surveys, I have given them the opportunity to "make it right" more than once and they can't even do that right! So lets start with the fact that they let some of the Dominick's employees keep their jobs. Maybe those employees should be thankful to have a job? and maybe put some effort into doing it? apparently not. They complain out loud to customers about pay cuts and benefits. (not ever again) The meat department- (lacking in every aspect compared to Vernon Hills) But my favorite is when you get skirt steak (my kids favorite) which is WAY over priced and looks completely trimmed when you get it, and you get home, and the other side hasn't been trimmed at all- so you are paying $12.99/lb for all that fat.... Took it back, they gave me my money back (which didn't really make up for the 1 1/2 hours of trimming the 6 lbb of steak ((which left me with 3 when I needed 6))) only to do the same crap to me again. Seriously? You think the manager would check it before handing it to me knowing he was supposed to be fixing something already messed up? It's been over 5 years since I said never again. I should have listened to myself. Masks not enforced despite the mandate. People didn't have them on at all and no one working there cared. I also saw staff with masks down to their chin. The freezer section by Lean Cuisines had a door that would not close. Everything was covered in frost. I'm guessing it's been like that for days. Bakery section was devoted to Stans donuts. Few "homemade" choices and nothing looked fresh. English muffins "on sale" were $1 more than Target for the same brand. The store has so much going on it's hard to start on anything specific. Was on a mission for a roast for dinner and, as my luck went, they were on sale. Good quality meat department and the usual's were looking fresh as well. read more

This store is so frustrating! They beg you to become a rewards member, now they still wont give you the coupon-sell price. They want you to log in, and now download digital coupons. How ridiculous! I am already a rewards member. That should be enough. Now after working all day, and needing to stop at the grocery store, you expect people to log in on their phones, download coupons or you cant buy that item on sale. Really? Why am I a rewards member then? Just got to keep asking people for more and more yet you simply make it hard to get the sale items. Hate this store. read more
