Butera is an excellent green grocer and is our go-to in this category. We are pretty particular foodies and Butera has always done well by us. I'm not writing about that today. Instead I am writing to commend really nice personal service provided by manager Stacy. I came in looking for the Lady Stella cookies made by baker Stella D'Oro. Butera usually has them and I typically buy several packages. My dearly beloved is pretty well addicted to them. I went to the service desk and asked. Stacy soon appeared and explained that the issue was with the distributor of Stella D'Oro. The distributor doesn't want to stock them in this Butera, apparently. OK. I guess these aren't as popular with the rest of the world. I get that. I then asked if I could simply order case quantities at which point Stacy went through her paperwork to find the most recent bill to get me a phone number. She found the bill but no phone number, email or even an address for the distributor. With luck, the rep will come by on Friday and either Stacy or I will catch her and get a case order in. As a recently former employee there as of 9/30/2022 I can tell you right now that place is trash,most of their produce is over ripped and gross looking. I don't know where they get it from but it's all looking past due on expiration. As far as working there it's one of the worst places to do so,the manager is an old Italian man name Vito-yes I said his name! he mistreats employees and talks down to them,making them do all the heavy lifting no matter if you are working on another task,gets angry if you have a medical emergency and show proof,does not respect Hipaa laws and tells other employees about any medical condition you may have. He texts you randomly on your day off to come to work,or on your last hour of work on your shift tries and make you stay longer even if you have other personal errands and if you can't stay he will get angry. Has a wife who is old and ill,yet he is a womanizer trying to talk to young woman coworkers in flirtatious manners.The store thaws out there frozen chicken in the back room without water or anything,just room temperature and it collects flies and stinks the place up,blood spilling on the floor and all. Their rotisserie chicken has no flavor and is super dry,and the sushi has such stale rice,they don't make it fresh they get it from some random van that drops it off.The pay is very poor for the monumental workload they put you under.The Corporate offices do not care about harrasment complaints and do not return calls. read more

We used to love this grocery store and pretty much exclusively shopped here each week. But unfortunately over the last five years, the quality of their products have significantly decreased. The produce is completely unreliable, which was the best part about this grocer when we first moved here. And even some of the non-perishable items are out of date and covered in dust on the shelf now. I wanted to personally thank Jonathan in the Deli department / counter at the Butera in Palatine on Dundee Road. He was working all by himself on Sunday, September 3rd. I had a fairly large lunchmeat order that he was helping me with. There was a rude, ignorant woman who was being nasty and asking Johnathan why he was the only one working the counter. Jonathan kept his professional demeanor while he finished serving me even though this woman kept making impolite comments.I want to make sure that Jonathan receives the praise that he deserves because he was really wonderful. This Butera is not on our usual list of grocery stores, but we do come here on occasion, especially if they have good sales. And they seem to have pretty good sales on a regular basis that can be far better than the Jewel just down the road. Their deli is like any deli in the area - it can get crowded but I tend to shop at fairly off hours, like a weekday around 11 a.m. and my waits have been minimal. (Good question for every grocery deli I shop at - why have those machines with the printed numbers on the little slip of paper? Not one seems to use them!! I routinely get a number 47 or whatever, and they appear to be serving number 98 according to the 'currently serving' number sign.) But I digress... The produce can be cheap and I always give it a good eyeball before I select it. The store overall seems fairly clean. I've never met the grumpy manager people seem to mention on a regular basis. This is a fine grocery store and I'm glad it's in the area. It's also affiliated with Piggly Wiggly which adds to their aura for some reason in my mind!! read more

What you get is a store trying to capitalize on vulnerability and fear. I went to buy cabbage because it's almost St Patrick's Day. I was thrilled to see they had toilet paper since it's impossible to find right now. I must have stared at the almost $8.00 price of the 4 pack for 3 minutes trying to talk myself out of buying it, despite needing it. No sane individual would pay that much for toilet paper. You know what? No self respecting company would CHARGE THAT for toilet paper. I will absolutely drive out of my way to go to any other store EXCEPT FOR Butera or any of its affiliates. There were multiple employees but only one lane open with a cashier and the bagger was the manager. The only line open was the express lane but because only one lane was open - the person in front of us had 2 full carts completely full! The manager refused to open another lane and the other employees just walking around were not allowed to open a lane. Soon the line grew to over 6 customers yet they still would not open another lane. Horrible service! read more

If you asked me what my favorite store was from the time I was in my late teens through twenties I would've said Nordstrom. If you asked me what my favorite store is now, I'd tell you Caputo's. The times they are a changin'. I don't even cook and I love this store. The first time I ever walked in they had those little plastic crates of blackberries for under a dollar. Unheard of + I love friggin blackberries. The cause and effect of that bargain meant that I bought a crap ton of berries and then crapped berry colors for about a week. One very magical, delicious, and affordable week. Gave new (positive) meaning the 'word' craptacular (it's in my vernacular so I'm calling it a word). The store has a cute Euro look to it, spacious, extremely well lit, and very organized. They don't always have all the produce you might need for a recipe, but that's only because they won't sell it if it's not the best quality. Their prices are anywhere from average to unbelievable (in a good way- revisit above excitement regarding blackberries) and they have a fantastic deli, prepared food, and bakery section. Truly outstanding there, but that's pretty obvious once you visit and walk up to see lines forming around the perimeter of all the viewing cases. Their alcohol section could be better... there's really not much in terms of good beer here but they do have some of the fun (cheap) Euro beers I've seen in Polish bars and (sort of) remember from my one trip to Europa (Croatia!). If there's anything I'm not too thrilled with it's some of the check out gals. A whole lotta attitude + a little bit of B Face doesn't thrill me. And I really don't appreciate an eye roll when I buy wine because they have to call someone over to check my ID... and talk ish in Spanish. This puta don't play that game. And just to end on a good note, because I really do love this store (to the point that I will put up with mean muggin' cashiers), their cafe section is fantastic. Outstanding sorbet and gelato and their pizzas by the slice or whole (just get the whole- they're light and you'll finish it) were shockingly good and crazy cheap. Decent supermarket choice in the area. It has a pretty wide variety of produce and international foods although there are increasingly more competitors in the area who provide these items as well. Prices are pretty good with good selection of cooked items as well. The big drawback is parking, this place is pretty much always busy any time of day you go, even if you're trying to go on a weekday afternoon. Fortunately, you don't really have to walk that far to get in no matter where you park (compared to say Costco or Meijers with giant parking lots). read more

I live less than a mile away from here and I always go elsewhere for my groceries. I guess that just goes to show you how much I [don't] love this place. It's not that I have anything to complain about -- I've been here a couple times to pick up some last minute items and bottles of wine -- but they've done nothing to really impress me. Plus, the employees usually seem bored and spend too much time talking to each other. Oh wait, I know what I hate about this location -- the parking! It's incredibly tiny and cramped! I do have to say that this place definitely beats Jewel and Dominick's with their lower prices and unique selection of fresh fruit and food, especially international cuisine. But since I'm a health-food nut, you'll usually find me at Whole Foods, Trader Joe's or Mariano's. I recommend this place over Jewel or Dominick's if you're looking for regular groceries, but it's not really my scene. read more

RACIST AND VERY TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE. Sadly my mom has been laughed at in front of many other people about her limited English. This very rude employee works in the deli, uses a long beard, is of middle eastern decent, and worst of all, ALSO HAS AN ACCENT WHEN HE SPEAKS ENGLISH! My moms English is not perfect, but it is definitely understandable. No reason why this employee has laughed at my mom, pretended not to understand her, and overall embarrassed her. Shopped here under Caputo's ownership and it was good. Shopped again a few weeks after Butera took over and was pretty disappointed in the changes but I thought it was due to new employees and management needing some time to adjust. I haven't been back there since, until today. I was in the neighborhood so decided to give Butera's Market another chance and thought they had improved by now. Nope! Even worse! The produce department looks sad with wilted veggies and half filled bins of overly ripe fruit. Skipped that department! Went on to the Deli and did get a few items on sale...some Mortadella, ham and Italian cheeses. But the deli man who sliced my order, was so unpleasant and grumpy despite my "smiles, pleases and thank yous", that I just wanted to finish asap and get the heck out of there. No "thank yous" from him that's for sure. Humongous difference of a family run, hands-on run store when Caputo owned it and a corporate hands-off store run by management who don't have a stake in the store's success. I don't know if the other Butera stores are similarly bad, but this one needs major help both in employee customer service training and in their quality of produce and their deli department personnel. Great prices on hard to find huge jars of pickled beets and other vinegary vegetables as such... Krack-ovia is an appropriate brand name imho. This is a VERY unique super market... the only one that I know of that has 5 gallon water jugs that you can swap out for free, after the initial purchase of $5.99. Not sure how that works, but I don't question it, just bring in my empty jug and get a $6 credit to cover the new water I take. Weird right? I paid $5.99 for that first jug, and if I didn't get another one, I would have not paid for any of the water. Hmm, good thing I'm not a gift-horse-mouth looker. I've tagged along with my dad who frequently shops here and I've been pretty impressed each time. I like the ethnic vibe and the fact that it's family owned. The store is pretty big and offers a lot of selection. I really like their bakery and have gotten great breads at a good price. I agree with another reviewer about how the wine selection is not the best. But, the cafe, in my opinion with the awesome gelato makes up for it. I wouldn't say I'm a regular, but perhaps I'll make more trips out here since I have enjoyed my experience every time I have been here. read more

Looks can be deceiving. Signs in windows draw you with promises of bargains within. Actually, the produce is borderline rotten. It's cheap enough but only buy what you can eat right away. I don't eat red meat, so you're on your own there, but i've had nothing but problems with seafood and especially chicken. There's a reason it's cheap! however, even worse, the attitude of most of the employees (deli and bakery) is unforgivable. never heard of patience or customer service. Compared to other similar grocery stores, I was a little disappointed. The store closes at 9. I went there last Saturday and they didn't have spinach or green onions. The aisles are a little tighter than other places so we left our cart at the end of the aisle. Parking is decent. There is a back way to get out on to Hicks behind the car dealer. Overall, it's a decent place for groceries, but since there are plenty of similar places in this area, I would choose an alternative. read more

I absolutely love Joe Caputo's! The produce is VERY fresh and the prices are also great. There is always such an amazing selection for everything you will need when it comes to fruits and veggies. Unless you are going at 8am (Which I like to do) the parking is atrocious, but the little walk from the side parking lot is worth it! They do not have much of a selection for "American" hot dogs / burgers, but if you want that you can always go elsewhere. I actually noticed that they do have some fresh seafood burgers that you can grill though... okay I love seafood but I cringe at the idea of grilled seafood in a burger form.. They have great multicultural sections and the sandwich buns from their bakery are pretty good. Don't expect to get much help from their workers, but the store is not that huge, so you can get around. Joe Caputo's will never disappoint with their produce... Go and shop here! read more

We are raw vegans so we mainly shop the produce aisles and Joe Caputo's produce is second to none! It is a giant area as compared to the rest of the store and always the freshest of the fresh with a lot of hard to find items that are reasonably priced. We have a choice of five supermarkets within a mile radius and our choice has become Caputo's because of their high quality, low prices, and desire to be of service. They also serve Lavazza coffee, which is the best coffee on the planet. It is what Italy drinks (we spent 10 years in Milan) and what is mainly served at Eataly in downtown Chicago. Their gelato is the same gelato that is served at Eataly! What an unexpected treat! read more

Heaven, I'm in heaven! This place RAWKS! Amazing produce at great prices (although when I went the avocados were pricey. Go figure). I didn't really get to check out the deli section because a) I didn't need anything from there and b) there were seriously 50 people waiting around to get stuff. I'm assuming 50 people don't wait around for crap so I'm willing to bet that I'd pretty good stuff. Warning: If you are on a diet, diabetic or fall victim to fits after consuming large amounts of sugar, do not, I repeat, DO NOT go anywhere near the bakery. First, they put out samples, which are evil, evil, evil. I defy you to taste something and not leave with a box of pastries. I purchased a canoli, a lemon roll and 6 pinch cookies and they were all amazing! There wasn't a single thing there that I wouldn't be willing to inhale in a PMS induced stupor. Frozen items (like name brand stuff) aren't priced as nicely here but that tends to happen in a store like this. I love the tons of "Caputo" brand items, like pizza and pasta, etc. It is a madhouse on the weekends. The staff is friendly and this being a new store, it's very clean and sparkly. Luckily, we have a smaller Caputo's nearby that I can stop at for everyday runs. read more

Nice selection of produce, and they had some items I've never seen for sale at a grocery store such as zucchini flowers. They have ridiculous prices on some items, such as $.49/lb. for chicken legs. They are a bit limited on other items for sale though, such as frozen good. Service was friendly and fast here when we went. read more

I used to come to Caputo's just when I would get word of a great deal, something like; Mangos 3 for $1. In my short visits while on a mission I glanced over some of the things that makes this a great place to shop. This is a grocery store of quality; one that has good produce, a fantastic deli, wood burning pizza oven, nice little packaged bulk items, and good prices. I normally spend half of my grocery dollars on produce, so have fresh produce out is important to me and Caputo's delivers. They seem to have a good variety of everything that I want at a great price - I stick to the basics; peppers, onions, greens, mushrooms, and random fruits. They are normally running a few things on special which is a good sign that you need to cook/eat up the specials asap as they are on their way out. I have never had any problems with the deli and the wait is not bad depending on when you go, their pre-made food is not as good as something like a whole foods but you should be able to find something tasty. In the corner near the check out Caputo's has a wonderful treat inside - there is a wood burning pizza oven and gelato bar. The pizza is fantastic, quick, hot and tasty! It was only by accident that I ate here but I would come back just for the pizza alone! I have never had the gelato but it looks amazing! It is a little pricy when you think that there is gelato by the pint just a few steps away in the freezer but it appears to be a much higher quality. The parking lot is small and easy to miss but the store is never too pack. The people that work there are friendly and helpful and have guided me a few times the items I need. Overall it is a good shopping experience with great prices and selection without all of the madness of other stores. read more

The only reason Caputo's gets 4 stars is because the parking lot is a mess and it's always super mega uber crowded. Just goes to show how amazing it is? I think so! Firstly... produce! I love produce! I love Caputo's produce. It's fresh. It's VERY reasonably priced. It's easy to find. It's plentiful. There is always what I *need* and something new and interesting to try. Protein... again, reasonable. Always what I'm looking for... always something to stock my freezer for later. Haven't ventured into any of the pre-marinated stuff yet, but it all looks very yummy! Deli Counter... Always the busiest place in the store. Why? Boar's head my friends. Their fresh mozzarella is top notch (see my comment below on homemade pizzas) Bakery... dangerous. I try to stay away for the sake of my waistline. I do, however, buy the par-frozen pizza dough balls to make my own pizzas at home. Ethnic foods: Plentiful. My momma raised me to be an adventurous (and ambitious) eater. I guess that's the 1/2 Italian 1/2 Jewish thing. I love ethnic foods. And now I love that we have Caputo's, and can make ethnic foods at home. Visited the store on Saturday November 23rd got the Italian Olive medley and found this in there today when I scooped some on my plate. A piece of clear glass. I called the store to alert them and spoke to Juan the Deli Manager who told me that's not good, what did I want to do? Get refund or bring salad back and he will take the glass out and look at it. What a joke! I was not looking to get it refunded but letting them know to go check it!!!!! Warning if you bought some recently- check for glass! Joe Caputo & Son's has by far the best selection of meats and produce for the best prices in the area. They have an awesome deli counter - the selection can't be beat. I don't believe I've seen cheaper prices for top quality product anywhere in the area. The butcher area has quite the selection and the staff is always more then willing to cut, trim or tenderize to your particular liking. The bakery section is pretty impressive, I ordered my daughter's birthday cake here in November and it was the best cannoli cake we've ever tasted and our entire family agreed. This place gets pretty jammed up on the weekend's and finding parking, or room to shop, can be pretty tough. Sometimes the lines go as far back to the aisles, making it difficult to squeeze your cart through the crowd. I try to do most of my grocery shopping during the week if at all possible to avoid the hooplah. read more

As for the Joe Caputo's a and sons ion Palatine, it is a nice place. In the absence of other big names - this one stands out at the isle of low priced groceries (as compared to Whole Foods across the road) - but in comparison to other Caputo's stores.. The prices are on the higher side and the produce is not as fresh as you would like it to be. If you do not Spanish it may be hard to find help in the store (once I needed sour green apples - and guess how much time it took me to finally give up and say "whatever"). However meat selection is great and the kitchen ready goods are fantastic. So it is a good store - nothing outstanding, but a good one. read more

Items here are VERY hard to find. I asked at least a couple of people where the Lays Potato Chips were. Simple request right? Wrong! I never did find them and needed to leave without them. At the end I asked the Cashier (Diego). And he appeared he couldn't care less as to whether I was able to find the potato chips or not. On the plus side they're fairly clean. This is a mixed review. I USED to love this place...but over time the luster has REALLY faded here's why: PARKING LOT - Way too small and crowded - plus the slots are small. I have been dinged there QUITE often!! CUSTOMER SERVICE? - Thinking about it..I have never been said hello to ONCE! EVER (and can't recall many thank yous, let alone ones where they look in your eyes and MEAN it)! Not even by the cashiers. Employees NEVER go out of their way to ask to help. I am only helped if i am in line with a number. And then i get the feeling like I am a bother rather than a customer. DELI DEPARTMENT - Yes, the prices are cheaper - but eat it fast because it is slimey in a less than three days. Sometimes the deli cutter who is servicing you will disappear into the back room and..take their break (long enough that you have to ask others to retrieve them)??? But the thing that bugs me the MOST? EVERY SINGLE TIME they will give you MORE than you ask for. BE ON THE LOOK OUT! You want a half a pound? ask for a quarter...and you will STILL have to have them remove some. (Last time I asked for 1/3 lb and he cut me 2 lbs. but most times itls just enough that you won't notice unless you watch. Is that where they make their money??) PRODUCE - Sometimes it's cheaper, but you have to know your prices!! The problem more centers around the lack of quality. Example - Stawberries on sale? Good luck finding a good container of them. Grapes or Cherries? The packages are sealed so you must buy the bad with the fairly decent. And what you buy doesn't last more than a few days. Eat it fast...it'll go bad. Some that aren't even ripe yet will rot before ripening. OBVIOUSLY this is the issue - they buy poor to mediocore and then charge less. But you pay in the end with all the stuff you throw away. (My rule: if it's advertised on sale -- don't consider buying it - it was cheap to them because it's not good.) MEAT - not bad...but never have had a GREAT piece of meat from Caputo's. The taste is just not there (again - lack of quality) GROCERY/FROZEN/DAIRY...THIS is where you pay through the nose. Convienent store prices + fair to mid quality everything else = I'm not going to travel to shop there anymore. Jewel might charge a bit more-but for the better quality...it's worth it.
