On a recent visit to NYC we stayed in an AirBnB one block away from Butler so I was delighted such a highly rated coffee shop was steps away. Until...I ordered "the biggest coffee size you have"l. I ordered a flat white but little did I know (and they did not inform me) that a flat white only came in the smallest cup. The young man making the coffee drinks was nice enough to steam some extra pistachio milk and pour it all into a bigger cup for me. I did like the pistachio milk, never had it, glad to try it out. The coffee was very good, 4.3 on drinkability scale. Now for the baked goods...fly in case had a great meal, my sister did not. She said "This is the worst corn muffin I have ever had" compared it to DD which she said was better, oh my. Brother was also displeased with muffin choice. I had a bite and thought it was extremely dry and tasteless. All said and done I would come back for coffee and skip the baked goods. read more

Stumbled across this cafe when wandering Williamsburg of Brooklyn, New York. At first sight, I thought that the to-go window was a pretty cool feature. Looking further, I thought that the pastry menu on the window had a decent amount of things to choose from. What stuck out to me was Herb & Chili Scone, Triple Chocolate Croissant, & Tahini & Chocolate Cookie. The pastry I was most excited about was the scone. Sadly, tasting it I was disappointed. It didn't taste like herbs or have any spice to it. I thought this was strange because it literally had pieces of chili in it... Weird.. On the other hand, the cookie also did not taste as good as I was hoping. I felt that the flavor ratio was off or the flavors just don't mix well together. The croissant was okay. It seemed like a regular chocolate pastry. The service, on the other hand, was good. The cashier was friendly and gave recommendations. He even asked us how our experience was after we ate. This new bright, spacious coffee shop is a little out of the way, but has some amazing pastries and is well worth the visit. Located right alongside the Williamsburg Bridge, it's on the corner of 5th and Berry, a relatively quiet and calm spot compared to the Bedford Ave strip a few blocks away. They have a wide variety of housemade pastries, which are both beautiful and delicious. I tried a bunch of them and the Milo Ganache Cupcake definitely stands out as one of the best ($5). They also have breakfast and lunch options, such as a few sandwiches and a Thai Spiced Pastie on display with the pastries, so I will definitely be back to try some of those. They also have a weekend-only Breakfast Scotch Egg, which sounds interesting. I'm not the biggest fan of Intelligentsia, so there may be better cold brew to be found in the neighborhood, but for a great place with a nice vibe and excellent sweets, this is one of the best options around here. read more

Busy bakery by a famous pastry chef on a side street in Williamsburg. Inside is pretty small with only a few tables, but it's quick turnover since it's not a sit down restaurant, but a fancier bakery. We got ginger latte and a regular latte, they were a little blend.. very light caffeine but the ginger kick was a bit strong. I was excited to try the pastries. I tried the petit french toast and the caramelia. Both are on a pretty heavy side, very sweet and salty, so most people will like it. Together, almost $10. Also, we tried the breakfast sandwich and the breakfast empanada. The sandwich was pretty good with fresh side salad but costed $10. Not sure if a regular egg bacon sandwich just cause it's on a brioche bun can cost ten bucks. Actually this was bearable compared to the $8 breakfast empanada. The scrambled egg was overdone and I couldn't find any bacon pieces in it. I am not a fan of cilantro so I didn't like the sauce that came with it. And I don't think it goes well with the empanada regardless of my preference. My total bill with the tip for just 2 people costed approximately $43 and this wasn't even a full service restaurant. The food is okay, but price is unreasonable in my opinion. read more

Though I've sung my praises about this wonderful bakeshop/coffee shop many times before, I recently tried their granola for the first time and it was so impressive that it warrants an official Yelp update. Though a granola parfait with fruit and yogurt is nothing new, this one is special (just peek at my photo of it and I know you'll agree). The fresh raspberries and mango were so plentiful that they almost hid the yogurt underneath. The granola was perfectly crunchy, not too sweet. There was a lovely medley of seeds, nuts, and other goodies, including something really sweet and crunchy that I was never able to identify, but was a wonderful surprise every time I bit down on it. There are even FLOWERS on this thing FFS! It's a piece of art. It's a nutritious breakfast (or lunch). It's a gorgeous photo opp. It's all of the above. Butler is one of my favorite cafes in Williamsburg. It's well located, just a few blocks from Domino park. They have my favorite matcha brand, solid coffee, seasonal and fresh avocado toast, and bomb sandwiches. The outdoor line moves fast. The indoor seating is comfy, quiet but not stressfully so, and includes outlets for laptop charging. Overall, a great place to get work done. They do have day and time specific policies on laptop use. read more

Nice bright coffee shop right by Dumbo waterfront. The interior is very "west-elm" like, and some seats have really great views of the BK Bridge. In terms of food, they have a wide variety of pastries and sandwiches to choose from. I got the breakfast empanada, which was quite good especially with the cilantro sauce (if I recall correctly), and an ice latte. They actually have decent wifi so it's not a bad place to post up and do some work, but keep in mind it does get very crowded with tourists visiting Dumbo. read more

The food & espresso was PERFECT. The vibes, the merch - all of it. The owner/chef is a Michelin star winner - so that's a big deal! And it comes through in EVERYTHING we are. 3 pastries, 1 latte, and 1 drip... I received the latte with in 5 mins, pretty standard. But I waited 30 mins and the rest of my order never came out. I watched 10-15 people come in and order just drip coffee and pastries, and receive their orders right away. So, I finally had to ask 2 different people, because I asked one lady who was doing food, who replied that she didn't handle coffee. So, she got my pastries for me, and the same lady who made my latte, got my drip for me. Didn't realize the gentlemen behind the counter, who took my order, was allowed to discriminate who he serves? But now I know, this is not a friendly place at all. A shame as well, considering I do a lot of meetings and work out of coffee shops because I don't drink. Also, just moved to this side of Williamsburg, welcome to the neighborhood, right! The worst part, the order was $25, and I tipped $5... should have tipped after the service was complete, lesson learned. And didn't even get an apology for the wait. If there's one thing Williamsburg is saturated with, it's coffee shops. With that said, I'm still ecstatic about Butler because it's so cute and fabulous. They're a bakeshop, with pastries made by Ryan Butler, a Michelin starred pastry chef. They have brunch-at-restaurant level breakfast/lunch options, a well lit interior and ultra chic booths, even an adorable little take-away window should you not want to venture indoors for all their goodies. The food: Ricotta toast- I never thought to have ricotta on toast before but it was light and creamy and didn't take the limelight away from the true stars, the thyme peach and honeycomb drizzle. Petite French toast- don't let that Cinnabon-esque appearance fool you. It's so much more than that top swirl and glaze. It's sweetened with maple and dare I say, a bit of bacon surprise? Morning glory muffin- your morning is bound to be glorious with this little bundle of joy. It's got all my faves in it (coconut, passionfruit, pineapple, carrot). The drinks: Iced mint matcha- minty fresh and the perfect drink for summer. I could drink this matcha milk goodness all day long. Latte- all the drinks from their espresso bar are made with Intelligentsia. The latte art was on point and I drank it fairly quickly; all-in-all, a good sign since it usually takes me half a day to finish a grande! What sets Butler apart from the rest: Their staff actually converses with the customers. They talk about local happenings and even know peeps on a personal level. Great little gem just next to Williamsburg bridge serving Intelligentsia coffee, one of the premium beans from Chicago that I loved a lot! Their coffee mugs were cute too, just as a side note. Aside from espresso drinks, Butler also proudly provided pastries and savories goodies freshly prepared daily. Currently in town for a little getaway and as we are staying around the corner we've already been here twice. During our first visit I tried their macchiato (stronger and smaller than most) and their yogurt parfait. The yogurt parfait was the reason we came back the second time. It's absolutely and a must try if you like yogurt parfaits. The parfait comes in two sizes, small and large and is topped with quinoa puffs, various nuts (walnuts, pistachios, pumpkin seeds, etc) and raspberries, peaches and pineapples. I've never had a better yogurt parfait in my life but so happy I was able to try this one. As for the cafe itself it's super cute and warm, gets a little packed once spaces fill up but we were lucky enough to snag a table immediately when we arrived both times. My friend and I happened to walk by this place and say no more, we are fans. Killer lattes and pastries. I had the gluten free date muffin which was nice and moist (unlike some gf pastries that are hard as a rock). Only con is that I wish they had more than one gluten free pastry option. The barista accidentally used whole instead of oat milk for my friends latte and was apologetic and offered to remake it which we politely decline as we didn't want the coffee to go to waste. Oops my friend and I kept calling this place Butter until today after closely looking at their logo. BUTLER is a nice little corner cafe. Despite being right under the Williamsburg bridge, the outdoor seating was peaceful on a sunny Sunday in August 12 in the afternoon unlike the Bedford Ave strip of cafes and brunch spots. The interior is a mix of industrial with tall gray concrete walls and oversized plants hanging from the ceiling and some vintage style wall seats and wall decor. There's not much indoor seating space so it's not the type of cafe to sit for hours working on your laptop. But is perfect for a light bite to eat and some Instagram pics. We got one iced latte, one hot latte, a French toast roll, and a peach cobbler. Their pastries are delish and I'd definitely come back to try the others since I live in the neighborhood. I'll try their cold brew or black coffee next time however since the lattes were too heavy on the milk. read more

I never normally write reviews, but I probably won't go here ever again. I come to Brooklyn every month for work and wanted to try a new spot. When I went to order coffee at the window the guy told me it was a 30 minute wait because the man before me had ordered 30 coffees. Barista was very nice while we waited inside instead, but he was working alone and the lines were growing. Many people left with attitude understandably. Luckily I just got cold brew so he helped me in between the large order and was very accommodating, but there is no reason why he should have been alone. Great vibe on the corner of S5th and Berry right under the Williamsburg bridge. They've got benches outside where you can sit and soak up the sun on a nice day. Coffee is exceptional (it's run by aussies...and they know coffee!!). Dog friendly and they even put bowls outside for your pooch! They serve Intelligentsia which is a bonus. Did not eat but the food looks delicious. Lots of baked treats and cafe style food, so maybe go for a run before so you can treat yourself. It was a solid cafe, but nothing outstanding. I came in early on a weekday morning to check it out before work and ordered a drip coffee (which came in a beautifully designed, millenial pink cup) and a breakfast empanada. Both decent but nothing I'd come out of my way for again. I will say the selection of pastries was pretty robust though. One issue was that it was really hot in the cafe that day -- not sure what the issue was. It was noticeably stuffy. I sat and read/people-watched for a bit. Even though it was early, people were coming in and out quite frequently -- it's clearly a local favorite, though there aren't that many "hipster, new-age, third-wave coffee shops" in its direct vacinity. You'd find similar places in North Williamsburg or like, SoHo. I may come back if I was in the area again but wouldn't go out of my way to study/hang out there. We are self-identified coffee snobs and this is the BEST coffee in the city (and beyond). They also serve the most scrumptious pastries! Highly recommend their Petite French Toast (like a gourmet maple syrup Hawaiian roll monkey bread) as well as the Oatmeal, which cannot be described accurately with words other than "simply heavenly." I was excited to check out this cute and good neighborhood bakery, but I didn't find it outstanding enough for me to go out of my way to return. I tried a special open-faced egg sandwich on foccacia, which was very tasty. The egg was perfectly runny. The dark chocolate brownie was very rich; the concord grapes were an interesting touch, but I would've appreciated more black sesame (the flavor didn't really come through for me and was overpowered by the brownie itself). It was a bit hard and dry on the outside, but the inside was still moist. Other pastries and sweets looked good and very tempting, but I didn't get to try today. read more
