Both dishes looked amazing and tasted even better. The fried chicken was perfectly seasoned with just the right amount of spice, and the waffles were incredibly fluffy. The chicken had a little kick to it, which I personally loved. We also tried a couple of drinks, and the standout was definitely the matcha and guava drink--it was fantastic. The restaurant is located in a small plaza that doesn't look particularly fancy from the outside, but the interior is beautiful, inviting, and thoughtfully designed. Wow - I seriously enjoyed this place. From the street, it's a super unassuming spot in a tight little plaza with a tiny parking lot. But as I walked in, I knew we were in for a treat. The decor and vibe are very well thought out, and so chill. It makes you feel like you've entered a new favorite hole-in-the-wall spot. From the chalk style murals on the wall to the beautiful flowers displays hanging from the rafters, it made us excited for lunch. We came in to eat around 12:30 and the place was moderately busy, but not packed. Over the course of our time eating, it filled in, and most tables filled up. They had offered a Groupon, which was easy to use, and our server was helpful in steering us toward what we could use it for. The food was really excellent. We had the thai fried chicken and waffles, and the crying tiger steak fried rice, and for drinks we had the guava matcha and the chai. When I say it's good, I mean it. The crying tiger steak was like butter, and the fried rice had great texture and flavor. The sauce they served it with was definitely hot, but added heat that I could handle (for reference, I'm a medium-hot guy when at Thai restaurants - not a Thai-hot guy). The portion was great - definitely enough to make you feel like you're getting your money's worth. The fried chicken had some of the best batter I've had in LA, and the chicken itself was super juicy. They brought a kind of yum yum sauce to pair with it, which added a nice bit of extra flavor, too. Topping it off was the waffle, which was fluffy, and had a delicious almost-cakey texture to it. One of my favorite waffles ever. The drinks were also great, especially the guava matcha. If they allow for modifying the sugar level, I'd maybe go to 75%, as it was a little sweeter than I usually do for drinks, but otherwise it was perfect. Small and unassuming, in a drab strip mall... but so much thought and care goes into everything at this restaurant. The coffee drinks are just amazing and unique. The coffee itself is exceptional, so anything additional is chef's kiss. Fiance wanted to order two drinks, one to go. I wouldn't let him... but it was that good. (I'm partial to the salted caramel latte with almond milk. He likes the spicy Thai coffee latte with almond milk. It's fierce!) I've loved everything I've tried here, but I do prefer any dressing on the side for the crepes and salad. (If you're in the mood for a light and healthy drink, try the butterfly pea tea. I was so excited to give this place a try. Unfortunately, we weren't able to try their food due to extremely poor service. When we arrived, we were greeted curtly and seated at a table, near the exit, directly in the line of sight of the bar/counter where the staff is at. After receiving the menu, we were ignored 10-15 mins. No one offered water, asked if we had any questions, nor acknowledged us in any way despite being directly in the line of sight of the bar/counter. During this time, staff assisted other guests seated around us including taking orders from a party directly behind us but never returned to our table or acknowledged us. To be clear, there is only a total of 3 parties: a lone guy next to us who was already eating, our party and the party seated behind us. At one point, another server delivered water to the guy next to us so naturally we tried to call for his attention but were also ignored. Eventually, we left without being spoken to. Horrible experience for a place with only 3 parties on a Saturday morning around 10 AM. Mind you, there are at least 3 people behind the counter. They lack basic hospitality and for that alone, I won't be coming back nor would I recommend this place. read more

We decided to try this spot while we were in the area and ordered a few different things. The tom kah shrimp toast was amazing nice crunch on the toast and the sauce paired really well. Definitely one of my favorite dishes here. We also got the tom yum avocado toast, which was pretty good too. It had a nice combination of flavors and was well balanced. The smoked salmon crepe was my least favorite. It was a bit too overpowering with all the sauces combined, so it didn't really work for me. For dessert, we tried the mango mango and it was really good super creamy and the mango was perfectly in season. We also got a Thai tea mocktail, but that one was a little underwhelming. It didn't have a strong Thai tea flavor. The interior is really cute with a floral design, which I liked a lot. The server were attentive and kept checking in on us to make sure everything was good, which I appreciated. Just a heads up since it's a Thai restaurant, a lot of the dishes lean toward the sour side, so if you're not into that it might feel a bit overpowering. Our second time here in 3 days! We live 8 mins away and were looking for a brunch spot to take my partners sister out during her visit here. There's a parking lot attached to the storefront, and tons of street parking-- so taking your car over should be no issue. Wheelchair accessible. Vegetarian options galore-- they also accommodate GF! Colin was our bartender and was lovely-- I did their bottomless mimosas and lychee was a personal fav, tho mango comes close! Did their salmon waffle dish this round, their honey lemon dressing is on the sweeter side so I get it on the side and add in 2 over easy eggs. It's funny, I used to live in the area for years and never thought to stop into Butterfly Pea...and that's because it didn't exist yet. This is actually an extension of the Thai restaurant next door, and it's a brilliant use of the space and kitchen. The menu is thoughtfully designed, with a great selection of Thai-influenced brunch and lunch options and some unique cocktails and mocktails. The coffee creations are fantastic as well. So glad I found Butterfly Pea Cafe! Their brunch menu is so unique. I got the tom yum shrimp toast because I love tom yum soup and was curious to see how they'd make a toast out of it. I was really surprised how they did it and I think they did it well. The toast is fried crispy with bits of garlic and you can really taste the lime and pepper flavors in the tom yum sauce, which isn't too spicy. The shrimp along with all the other ingredients they used were very fresh. My boyfriend got the smoked salmon toast and I liked that they topped the fresh salmon with salmon roe. Portions run kind of small, and in the end I think my boyfriend and I could have split another plate, but we had to leave soon as we finished. Their butterfly pea flower and matcha was pretty good. It was more vanilla flavored than matcha but I liked the matcha powder they used. However, the matcha layer was a bit too frothy that the texture wasn't smooth. Overall I like the vibe of the restaurant. Cute decor and great music playlist to set the ambience. I definitely want to come back and try more of their menu! read more

For spicy and savory I highly recommend the Crying Tiger Fried Rice and also the Fried Chicken and Waffle, which is made with lemongrass marinade. The drinks are also very good, and made with love and variety of syrups that are made in house. BP cloud milk, guava matcha and rose latte. The beans used for the coffee come from a local Roastery in the Arts District called Boxx. One of the best tasting espresso in LA. Owners Jenny and Billy, together for 30 years are warm and friendly and light this place up. All the art on the walls of both side by side restaurant concepts is done by Billy. Colin wears many important hats but on our visit, he made us 2 lattes that were definitely something to write home about, with the touch of a true professional who cares about his work and using the house made salted caramel syrup that he makes himself. We were visiting LA at the tail end of a southwest roadtrip and were looking for breakfast. I'm so glad that we tried Butterfly Pea Cafe based on the strong Yelp reviews. I was intrigued by the Thai-inspired breakfasts. I had a Thai latte to start, which had the perfect level of heat from the chilies and had actual vanilla seeds in it. My wife had the butterfly pea latte which was lovely. I had the kai do fried rice for breakfast. It was amazing. There was plenty of Thai sausage which was so flavorful. The fried egg added a nice crunch and the birdseye chili-fish sauce based sauce was perfect. My wife had the tom yum avocado toast. It was plenty of avocado on a nice piece of sourdough with radishes, fried onions, and lime. She added a poached egg which was a smart call. Service was great.
