As a cocktail enthusiast, The Semi Tropic has been on my radar. Owners Dan Finley & Eren Magri were on a mission to open a café/bar hybrid featuring great cocktails, quality coffee, good food, friendly staff, & an amazing sound system. (A lot of thought went into the acoustics & speaker system.) This chic establishment serves up European-inspired small plates, and their cocktail program melds inspiration with a respect for classic structure. The sultry pulsating bass lines that ooze through the speakers set the tone for a chilled vibe, and the tropical motifs provide an escape from reality. It's a great spot to relax and catch a game or hang with friends, which I did. I met some of my favorite Yelp peeps here for Sunday Brunch. We received a warm & friendly welcome from Rasheeda (bartender). She was darling, as was our server, Mason. They were both fantastic. We settled into the cozy couches tucked in the corner and ordered several dishes to share: Hummus, Prosciutto Panino, Eggplant Panino, Mediterranean Eggs, Green Shakshuka, & Fries. Drinks consisted of: Nitro Cold Brew, Bloody Mary, Age of Aquarius, & a Lavender Gimlet. The fries were tossed with rosemary salt and came with garlic aioli & ketchup. They were addicting & delicious. My Lavender Gimlet did not disappoint. Everyone enjoyed their selections, and we had a great time together. This was the perfect meet up spot. Great vibe at this local spot, the background music was very enjoyable and played a mix of popular and R&B-like genre. We came for brunch, ordered a variety of plates to share. The decor was a garden type setting with floral designs throughout the venue. There are pub tables with high-top stools. We snagged a corner couch with a coffee table in the center. It was very comfortable, like we were visiting someone's home. It's a perfect place for small or large groups. We ordered: - Prosciutto Panini - on focaccia with mozzarella, spinach, red onion, olive aioli and pickled veggies on the side. - Eggplant Panini - on focaccia, feta and provolone cheeses, tomatoes, arugula and pickled veggies on the side. - French Fries with dipping sauce - Hummus Plate - with sliced pita bread - Mediterranean eggs - on burrata cheese, topped with secret glaze and garnish. My boyfriend's cousin and his girlfriend came to LA to visit us so we had a full weekend of fun taking them around the city. To end the night before we headed off to dinner, we stopped by The Semi- Tropic bar for drinks. The parking situation was difficult to say the least-- there is no street parking or parking lot. And the neighborhood behind the bar is filled with park cars. We were lucky and parked at a parking lot that was for the surrounding business (so sorry to the pizza/ weed shop!). We arrived at around 6:30 PM so it wasn't too busy. We were greeted by one of the servers and she gave us options to either sit at a lounge table area or hightop tables. We opted for the hightop tables because we knew we weren't staying there for long. The server was friendly and patient as we looked over the menu for drinks. I've been sober for about a year so I only had water, my boyfriend ordered a Naoshima Dream, his cousin ordered a Mango Cart, and his cousin's girlfriend ordered a Lemon Drop Martini. The bar was super cute and hipster! I honestly would have loved going to this bar back when I used to drink. It's dimly lit, had a vintage 20's speakeasy feel to it and the music was a vibe. I'd recommend coming here for a little date with your partner or even coming with a group of friends. My boyfriend had been here once before and he said the food was really good and affordable. He had a panini and said for bar food it was a 10/10. We waited maybe like 10 minutes for our drinks to come, we were having such a fun time chatting and enjoying the environment that it didn't feel long at all. My boyfriend, his cousin, and his cousin's girlfriend really enjoyed their drinks. They said the drinks tasted "light" insinuating that there was barely any alcohol in it. Don't let the taste fool you, after finishing half of their drink there were full of smiles, giggles, and had a great buzz going. Semi tropic has been one my favorite neighborhood bars as of lately, because it's always such a great time. Their bartenders are pleasant, friendly and overall easy to talk each visit. Inside is a beautiful brick wall with the right amount of lighting and it's typically never too crowded. They have music the times I've gone on the weekends. I've never ate there so I can't speak for the food. However, their cocktails are fantastic. The 24 carrot with mezcal is my personal favorite. Okay I am completely in love with this place. They call themselves a cocktail bar but in my opinion it is so much more! They do have a full bar but they also have great food and even better ambience, perfect for a date night, dinner with a friend, or even a birthday celebration. I've been there for all of those things, and each time it's been wonderful. Their kebabs are delicious. Love their salads as well. It's mostly middle eastern cuisine so you know it's reasonably healthy, but you will also be impressed with how delicious it is. Definitely would recommend getting their hummus and pita to complement your main dishes or just as a great side to share with the table. Their fries are also really tasty and perfectly seasoned. They do have a whole happy hour menu, including both drinks and food, which is from 2-6 pm daily (even on weekends)! So it's a great place to go for that late lunch or early dinner and get a great deal on some food and drinks. I've always had great service coming here. The hummus was really good too, there was a tiny kick from maybe the oil they had on it that made it even better for me. I wish I got that first versus the fries. The fries are a little on the saltier (in a good way) side and it overpowered the hummus a bit. The ambiance was a better than a bar. I loved that there was one side that had coves of couches where a bigger group could hang out, someone was celebrating their 30th and it seemed perfect. We both were on a no-alcohol day and they had great mocktails and beers to choose from! The service was nice. It's self seating. I think the only part we felt was confusing is if we were suppose to order at the bar or if we had a server. The sign in the front where we walked in said bar, but they actually had servers. Local bar lounge in Echo Park that has a nice vibe and friendly staff.. Decided to pass by and check it out as I drive by it a couple times a week. When you walk in, it is self seating, and there is ample seats for everyone. And, if your lucky, you can grab a couch and really relax. We started with cocktails, as any adult would, trying the Amani Jay. It has a ton of flavor, feeling like an upgraded, more nuanced Pina Colada. Very tasty. For food, we started with the hummus plate which the hummus was actually very nice, didn't really have the grittiness you get with a lot of gummies. As for entrees, the shrimp roll had nice chunks of shrimp in it, but the dressing it is covered in is a little on the thinner side, and I felt the flavors were fairly one note with the dressing covering everything. It could have been so just better. The Italian sausage looked great presentation wise, good color and eye appeal, and the flavor was pretty good as well. The bun is on the other side, and I felt the bun to sausage ratio leaves heavily toward the bun, but it was a nice bite. Overall, good people, flavorful drinks, nice ambiance, comfortable with some decent food, if you're looking for a bar/lounge with food, definitely give Semi Tropic a visit read more

My friends and I came here for some cocktails after having dinner down the street at another restaurant. We were able to get a seat right at the bar. We were served pretty much immediately, but I wanted to look over the cocktails before I made up my mind. I ended up getting a Naoshima Dream which was really refreshing.... and fun to look at. This is the type of place that if I were younger and was living back in this area, it would be a great spot to go to frequently. There's a DJ or at least someone that plays music on Saturday nights (the one night I've been here) and they definitely were playing some crowd pleasers as evidenced by group of folks singing along and dancing. Date night with the hubs, Friday ~4:30pm. We decided to try something new and grabbed a Lyft from Koreatown to Semi-Tropic. The bar itself is nice, small, but with plenty of seating. We sat at the bar, and that's where things went downhill. It took over 5 minutes for anyone to even acknowledge us. The female bartender never once made eye contact, avoided us entirely, and made it very clear she had no interest in helping. The only reason we finally got service was because my husband said (loud enough), "So I guess no one is going to help us?" At that point, the male bartender stepped in, thankfully, he was at least friendly once engaged. We ordered shishito peppers, steak plate, and Italian sausage. The food was fine, not bad, not memorable. Steak was overcooked but still edible. Definitely nothing worth making a trip for. Later, the bartender who helped us moved to the dining floor, and another male bartender came behind the bar. Same issue: no acknowledgment, no check-ins, low energy all around. We had to flag him down just to get another drink. Honestly, the vibe from the entire staff was flat & boring and that female bartender was easily the worst offender. (Management: check your cameras. The right-side bar cam should confirm exactly what I'm describing.) Bottom line: we won't be back. I had been a big fan of The Semi-Tropic for a while now and was meaning to leave a five-star review for some time, but today ended that. I visited for the first time in a little stretch due to travel and work, and the bar was busier than normal; it seems hours have changed, and they are opening earlier than 2 P.M. now. Long story short, while talking to the bartender/manager, this woman a few stools down interrupted our conversation to attack me unprovoked with a string of profanities. Did the bartender/manager say anything to her? No. Did he say anything to me, like an apology? No. (From their earlier interactions, I gathered that the foul-mouthed assailant was a friend of his.) I've consistently tipped him well, even mentioned him and his skills to other bartenders at famous bars around the world -- I thought he considered me a good customer. I guess I thought wrong, especially as he avoided me as much as possible afterward. So I'm done with The Semi-Tropic. I'll let them cater to their happy hour Aperol spritz-drinking clientele like this mean-spirited friend and take my money elsewhere. It's a shame because I had a lot of good drinks there, but the staff shouldn't allow people to abuse customers just because they're buddies with them. That's it. Talk about a world of difference from one side of a door to the other... This place didn't have a lot of curb appeal and we found out that it's because the vibe was ALL INSIDE!!!! The moment the door swung open, the music was blaring and it felt like a good time, though not a raucous time, was calling. It was cozy and certainly bumpin' for a Wednesday night at 8:15. The music, though loud (ish), was not offensive and the beautiful wood carved speakers were aimed above us not AT us. A distinction which implies that it limited the need for us to shout. Also the music curation was quite apropos. (Both my friend and I found ourselves Shazamming quite a few times each) By first looking at the menu there weren't a lot of hearty food choices but that turned out to be a bit of an illusion: The dishes were in the $10-$20 range but they weren't meals, they were dishes: fries, wings, sandwiches, and a few other things that were only a slight bit heartier. However, upon receiving my fries and wings I found myself quite satiated rather quickly. They were awesome. Not your regular wings and fries. They were on some other shit that kept my taste buds dancing. My friend got a sandwich that I thought he'd lay waste to with a quickness but that also was not the case. They have happy hour specials until 6 during the week, which includes 3 $10 cocktail options (one being a margarita), other drink deals, and some solidly priced snack options too. Outside of happy hour, their cocktails are reasonably priced and good. The food is also very good and surprise hit! They have lots of vegan/vegetarian options, and beyond snacks you can actually get a real meal here which is perfect if your happy hour hang gets extended because you're having fun but getting hungry. I had their grain bowl with steak kebab added and I would 100% order it again. If I could do 0 stars I absolutely would. Went a couple weeks ago for love island and the waiter was rude asf I understand it was busy and he's the only one but damn why are you being so passive aggressive to the guests? But that wasn't even the worst part. My friends and I came back for the love island finale. I had 1.5 drinks and felt normal, but unfortunately I have come to find out I have an underlying BP condition that causes me to faint easily when there is any alcohol in my system. I ended up fainting and woke up to the staff crowding me and my friends who were trying to help me. As I was coming to I asked for space from strangers and staff which they refused to give, berrating my friends saying they're calling an ambulance/911. I told them I was okay and truly just needed a second of space because I kept feeling like I was going to pass out. They ignored my requests and continued fighting with my friends saying we need to leave. We understood we had to leave given the scene I had unwillingly caused, but I just needed a few to regain consciousness fully or else I would've fainted on the way out. We begged them not to call 911 and just give us a bit, but they got mad and called anyway. Not wanting to deal with the bills, my friends and I had to rush out before feeling 100% ready. Not even thinking about the tab, I find out a couple days later they added a 20% gratuity fee for "not closing before leaving". I had just fainted and rushed out of your establishment after numerous pleads to give me a sec and SPACEEEEE, and then you have the audacity to add a 20% tip ?! He sounded so surprised when I asked for a refund on the tip. Maybe if they were nice and listened to my needs in the moment I absolutely would have tipped for the trouble. read more
