Super narrow leads onto fairways create an almost tunnel like effect when teeing off. High pines, maples And oaks make this a very difficult course to play. Excedingly well maintained, the holes, fairways and greens are immaculate: Minus the fact that the greens were AIRATED the Sunday we played (-$10), this is an amazing course. Water holes. Trees. Sand. Everything. Go here frequently and make sure you get a cart early. read more

I don't recall ever writing a review on Yelp in my entire life, this is my first one. 3 other golfers and I booked an 11am tee time at Butternut Farm on Sat Oct 21, 2023. The tee time was reserved on Tuesday Oct 17th. As the week progressed, it was obvious by Thursday/Friday that Sat Oct 21st was going to be a total washout ( it was). We attempted to cancel or reschedule our tee time on Friday 10/20 by calling Butternut, but our 2 calls to the Butternut pro shop late in the day went unanswered, so we called early Sat morning at 7am to cancel or reschedule due to the obvious severe weather. When we spoke with Butternut at 7am on 10/21 that despite the 100% chance of pouring rain all afternoon we were told that it was too late to cancel our tee time and that our only choices were to either not show up or to show up and play in the ridiculous pouring rain (side note: their carts do not have covers to protect golf bags). Either way, due to their 24 hour cancellation policy, and despite the crazy rain ( buckets!!) our credit card (which was already run) was gonna get charged! Reluctantly, we all drove to Butternut and attempted to play in the pouring rain which became absolutely unplayable by the time we reached the 4th/5th hole. No other golfers went out after our tee time. I called on Monday 10/23 to discuss our unfortunate experience and coordinate a resolution. Disappointingly, it took over a week (3 thoughtful emails and 4 phone calls) before Cole finally replied to my last email with a short note thanking us for our business and also saying that despite the weather, they have a 24 hour notice policy ( no exceptions) were not refunding our money ( offering us another day to play would have been a fair resolution). I learned through this excruciating experience that GM Cole does not take phone calls which is just ridiculous. His only communication method is email, so it was impossible to have any opportunity to explain/discuss what we encountered (didn't matter that they did not answer our 2 calls the day before. Cole's final email to me was short ("we have a policy, I'm am going to adhere to it. Please do not contact me again." Cole. Unfortunately, given our disappointing experience dealing with Cole, Butternut has lost 4 previously happy customers. I hope this review is constructive so that others can proceed with caution when booking future tee times at Butternut. read more

Do not play here. I booked a tee time a week in advance online where they charged my card ahead of time. They do offer a 24 hour cancellation but the weather forecast was mixed. The day of, I called ahead and they said we don't offer a rain check. I went to the course where is started to pour and was not letting up. The men at the course were extremely rude and were not allowing me to change to a different day. This was supposed to be my first time at this course and I will not go back and urge others to take their business elsewhere. I have worked in financial services for many years and we would never treat a new customer this way. read more

Ok course tight and not a lot of fun. I will say conditions are ok. Review is based on customer service which could be the worse by the manager Cole. I accidentally booked a tee time for the wrong day which was a tee time 10 mins after I booked it and prepaid through their booking service which is GolfNow. I called immediately after to try to correct the situation and was told only this person Cole can refund since employees do not have the power to do refunds or credits. I was only given an email and could never reach this Cole figure. I called each day for week to reach him and no call back or email back. Kept being told we do not do refunds or the pro shop working doesn't have the authority to give out one. Cole is always in and out and never there. I called GolfNow their booking service agent and sure enough they called the pro shop and was denied the refund. I called GolfNow the next day and somehow than the pro shop worker allowed the refund and it was not Cole. I get it courses are busy now with Covid but calling for a week and emailing back I should at least hear from this Cole person once. read more

I have to echo my experience with the other one and two star reviews here for Butternut Farm Golf Club. Terrible rain and cancellation policy, bad customer service. I had the same type of experience as Christopher L. from 8/22/2021, and can confirm every word in there is true for me too. They have the worst customer service and booking policy of any course I've dealt with in my 25 years of golfing in Massachusetts. Their response time is slow, not clear who to talk to or who has decision making authority, and ultimately their policies in terms of rain checks and cancellations are the worst. I cancelled 21 hours ahead of my tee time because of bad weather. When I eventually got a response from them (I got one response from two calls and four emails), Cole offered me a raincheck to play on a Monday. That was worthless to me, since I paid for a Saturday, and that's when I wanted to play, on a weekend. Their cancellation policy is not standard, and their customer service left me wondering where I stood for two weeks (spoiler alert: out $168). There are many fine places to golf in Massachusetts, and you want to sign up for a place that won't leave you high and dry should you need to cancel. Things happen, cancellations occur because of weather or circumstances. And every other reputable course in MA that I've booked at understands this and offers reasonable rain check policies. Don't play here because if anything happens, you're not getting money back. read more

Their rain check policy stinks. They will charge you the full amount if you cancel 1 second too late. Their policy says ""No shows MAY be charged full amount" so they have some disgression as far as charging you. They don't respond to your calls or emails. Obviously they don't care about their potential clients. Their rain check policy (they don't have one) is different than most courses in the area. I usually play there 4-6 times a year but I guess they don't care about players who play there somewhat regularly. I would never recommend playing there. read more

A very narrow, very compact 18 hole golf course. The fairways are very tight, but the trees that separate the fairways are cleared out enough so that you can usually find your stray golf ball. The total yardage is very low (a par 70 course), so if you're accurate you can score very well. There are a handful of par 4 greens that are very drivable. The greens were in good condition, the fairways were torn up in some spots but ultimately very playable. For the price, there were some minor annoyances. Yardage markers were infrequent and hard to find (we thought the 150 markers were OB sticks for the first few holes). There is no free drinking water on the course. The ranger had crazy eyes and his hyper rigidity to getting groups out (on a fairly quiet day) led to groups bottle necking on the par 3 second hole. They only take Visa/Mastercard. I enjoyed this course, with two very memorable holes (the 8th and the 10th) and a bunch of others that all blended together in my memory. There are a lot of "fores" and pine sounds with the narrow fairways, and the price is a little high. I'd play it again. read more

Can't believe what great shape the greens are looking and playing! LUSH green color, smooth roll, somewhat quick but true nonetheless. I was seriously impressed one hole after another by the condition of the greens. Some leaves and sticks still scattered in fairways and still need to put out tee boxes but i'm sure they will. Also, glad there were no temporary greens like a lot of places are doing. read more

Like others have stated, DO NOT PLAY HERE. They charge your card up front and do not offer rain checks! I booked several days in advance and two days before it looked like it would pour. Tried calling at 7pm, no one would answer in the club house despite them being open until 8pm. I called the next morning and they said it was inside the 24 hour cancellation window and would not refund my money. The morning of, it was absolutely downpouring and they told me to wear my rain gear, we don't offer rain checks. There are so many great courses around, this isn't pebble beach. I have been a regular golfer at Butternut, so other than the narrow fairways, I like the course. But, I recently found out the hard way that unlike other clubs, they don't give rain checks or refunds no matter how hard it's raining or how dangerous the lightning. I had my wedding here last November. I am very impressed with Butternut Farm and would recommend it to anyone. The food was amazing, from the passed and stationed hors d'oeuvres to the entire dinner, everything was delicious. (We had chicken grand'mere, steak, and eggplant parm as our three entree options - all fantastic). They also let us come take pictures immediately after the church even though the reception didn't begin until 5PM and we arrived there around 4PM. They were also really good about people showing up early. If I had to get picky, I would say that I wished they had turned on the fountain they have for the background of pictures (I remembered too late and didn't see the coordinator outside when we were taking pictures, so I let it go). Also, the fireplace was not on, as requested. These are only small things, but if I had to do it over I would still pick Butternut Farm. It is just such a beautiful spot and all of my guests loved it. The coordinators are very accomodating and friendly. The room looked EXACTLY as I had pictured it with the centerpieces, cake, and set up. This completed the best day of my life! read more

We had our wedding with Butternut Farm in October. If you are questioning wether or not to go with this venue, I can say, without a doubt, this is the place to be. Hope and Erin made our day the absolute BEST it could possibly be. Every single one of my emails was answered in a timely manner, every questioned answered, I was never left hanging in limbo. The staff is outgoing and friendly and I felt entirely connected with them during the whole process. Our food was OUTSTANDING!!! The appetizers were served hot, our guests never went hungry. The main course was AMAZING!! Everything was fresh and tasted great. The wait staff was friendly and eager to help in any way. I came to Erin with an idea and said "Please help make my vision come true" and she more than delivered. I have nothing but rave reviews about Butternut Farms, the grounds, the views, the management, the staff, the bartenders....everything was more than I could have ever expected. They went above and beyond what we wanted and gave us the most perfect wedding. This was the first venue we looked at and both my husband and I knew instantly that it was the place for us to have our reception. Butternut Farms, or "Buttnut," is a lovely course. A Par 70, it's obviously short but thanks too a nearly 600 yard par 5 tenth, it doesn't feel like it. The grounds are in immaculate shape, best I have seen since 2007. The fairways are narrow, and errant shots can easily find the woods. Pace of play is well organized, I can't think of a time that I have been trapped behind slow players. The amenities are also just what I need, the club house is nice, not gaudy. The bathrooms are clean. The hot dogs are crisp, and the beers are cold. The club house staff and starters are always friendly and act like they are glad you chose to play Buttnut. Topping off the experience are gorgeous beer cart employees delivering ice cold beers at an affordable price. There are several memorable holes, but the signature hole is clearly the par 4 eighth, a "risk-reward" style hole that requires a tee shot over water. The closer you want to be to the reachable green, the more water you have to carry. My personal favorite hole is the par 3 fourth which requires carrying a small pond, but coming up short of the covered bridge. It's short at about 130 yards from the whites, but there is danger on three sides of the green. There is really only one throw away hole in my opinion which is the par 3 sixteenth, and even it is fun, just not particularly scenic. Makes me think they finished up the course without realizing they only had 17 holes, and scrounged to squeeze in an eighteenth. If you are sick of playing Stowe Acres, I would recommend a round at Buttnut, if you are like me you'll be back time and time again. read more

We had the best time at our wedding at Butternut Farm. Amy & Hope were so incredibly helpful throughout the entire process. Not only did they help us plan the entire event, Amy was there throughout the entire night answering any questions, setting up and just ensuring that everything was as great as I had hoped & planned. I could not say better things about the staff who served and the team who helped us plan. I would recommend this place for a wedding with NO HESITATION. It is a beautiful place for a ceremony and the dinner was amazingly delicious. The only thing I would say is that there was not a lot of food on the plates as they came out into the dining room. Being new to the area, have been looking for a decent golf course within 1/2 hour of our Sudbury home. The first two I played really showed signs of disrepair. Played Butternut Farm on Friday and I have to tell you that the course was very well taken care of and had the feeling of a private course. The people who worked there who I had contact with were so pleasant. While it might be on the short side for some of the longer hitters, I found it enjoyable. Several tight tree lined fairways made accuracy a premium. The large greens rolled very true and were in excellent condition. My only complaint was pace of play. I'm used to playing in 4 hours in Florida, so this 5 hour round seemed rather drawn out. But overall, I'll be back. read more

Painfully slow pace of play (9/16/18 especially) this weekend as it was two weeks ago. This was the case for several other golfers I spoke with as well recently.... NO starter or marshal anywhere to be found today... 18 holes should not take 4:45... unacceptable. On a previous round the greens were punched or halfcut and sanded (some sort of maintenance) without any warning from the pro shop attendant (late August) when checking in nothing was said... very poor golf etiquette, on that same day the vending machines around the course were spitting out 85 degree Gatorades, by the way we never saw the refreshment cart during our round.... Management please get your act together... this could be a really great place with a few tweaks! read more

Butternut Farm provides a very pleasant golf experience. The course is maintained very well and there are some interesting holes like the 8th where you have to play over or around the water to provide some variance. Most holes at Butternut are narrow, however the trees that border the fairway are not heavily wooded so you can often find your ball. If you can hit straight, I think you will score fairly well at this course. I don't think it's as hard as the slope rating makes it out to be but you do need to be fairly accurate. read more

Nice course, although the greens were aerated 2 weeks ago and not properly maintained from there. The course simply does not have enough golf carts, they keep people waiting constantly. Each time we approached a hole, we waited, then after finishing we found people still waiting for carts with delayed tee times. If you have 6 hours for a round of golf, this is your spot. read more

I played here last Saturday. The first black mark is that when you book and pay online it is not blatantly clear that you are only paying for the round, and that if you want a cart, it is another 20 each....so 54 becomes 74, and then this short, tight, somewhat confusing lay out of a course becomes a headache. Because of its length, it doesnt really attract the better accomplished golfer, so random fourballs ahead are popping out continuously on the fairways you are about to hit down. It is also densely vegetated on some holes which definitively needs decisive clearing. Maintenance is adequate, but no real attention to detail. That said, the greens are wonderfully green and manicured. They needed a cut and roll the day I played, and the folks playing there simply dont think its important to repair divots. The greens are the best part of this golf course, but it is poorly laid out in places, reasonably well maintained, a tight course...not for the likes who play there, which makes for a frustrating expensive round of golf read more

While the golf course is in very good shape particularly the greens, I had an issue with the matter of payment and was very disappointed in management's surly attitude, inflexibility and overall reaction to the situation. Booked 2 foursomes on Friday June 12 for the following Thursday using their automated system. Although I was unable to get the system to book us at the Senior rate of $30 versus the regular $42 rate, I still made the reservation. The Automated system immediately charged my credit card at $42.00 each. I then called the Clubhouse and explained my situation. The person told me the charge was pending and it would be straightened out when we checked in. That never happened and I was charged $336 versus $240. The course GM told me I should have originally called the Clubhouse to make the tee times and because I booked at the higher rate, nothing could be done. He also mentioned that we were free to leave but would not get any refund. What frustrates me is that their website offers online booking but does not mention that to get the Senior rate, I needed to call the Clubhouse. Had I been told of the limitations during my call, I would have cancelled the online reservation and made the tee times over the phone. read more

Showed up to play without a tee time - only to find out they are aerating their back 9. Nothing noting this at the desk or on website, and the guy didn't tell me I'd have to play the front 9 twice until AFTER I paid. Really? Then, the starter tells me when I come back around to 1, they will be sending people out and I may have a wait. No priority given to the folks already on the course. As I sat on the first tee waiting for 2 groups to go out (a twosome and a threesome, neither of which they recommended I join up with for speed or time purposes), another single came up behind me and was also told to go out alone. We joined up for the sake of sanity... We waited on every hole - after playing the fifth hole, I putt around the green for 10-15 mins, and still pulled up to the 6th tee and waited another 10 mins. No pace of play at all and no marshall or though into how they sent people out. After playing the sixth, I went to the clubhouse to inquire about a rain check - I did not have the time for a 6 hour round of golf... Big sign on the desk - "no rain checks". What a terrible way to treat paying customers. What if it rains when you're out there? What if someone planned a quick round of 18, is forced into 9 holes twice and it takes 6 hours? I was then told to go play 9, and come back around to 1. So I then missed playing 7 and 8 and didn't get my $ worth... Very disappointed in this experience - on top of it, no water on the course, there was not a marshall in sight the entire time, and clearly had zero planning going into the plans to aerate. Can't believe it was full price, in October AND when forcing you into playing the same 9 holes twice. I've never seen a course do business like this and will not return to this place. read more

Butternut Farm Golf Club is a good way to get out of the city for a while and test your skills on a tight, windy layout complete with blind shots and tricky greens. I walked this course for $44 on a Friday afternoon. It is a very walkable layout, despite some hills. For the most part, the course is in good shape. The sand bunkers were a little suspect, though - there were some small stones and lots of dirt in them, which could be a little dangerous or damaging to your clubs if you're not careful. The greens were slower than usual because they had been recently aerated. That shouldn't have made much of a difference, but portions of several greens were under treatment, and one hopes that they will recover in time for the summer season. That made putting a lot of guesswork. Additionally, the "facilities" on the course itself (the restroom in the "field" portion of the course) could use a little work and upkeep, as there was no running water in the sink. Additionally, there were no free water coolers on the course, and the vending machines did not all accept dollar bills, which made hydration difficult. Yardages were marked off well for a public course. Beware that they use a white - yellow - blue system for 100 - 150 - 200, rather than the standard red - white - blue that most courses use. Club accordingly. If I could give a tip for playing, remember that the first two holes kind of suck you in because they're very easy. The challenge starts in earnest on the third, and it doesn't really let up. I took a double bogey on the famous par-5 10th (625 from the blues, which we played), and I didn't play the hole particularly badly. Given the tightness of the hole, I "hit it where I could see it" and made it on in four, albeit 50+ feet away from the hole. Butternut Farm is a fine place to play, and it's in a good location for people from all over to play. This course is definitely worth your time. read more

Golf course is always in good shape ,but I played Sunday morning and some greens were in rough shape.Alot of bare spots (mud) out in the fairways.I know you supposed to stay out of the bunkers but the bunkers need alot of work.It was hardpan underneath the 1" of sand and alot of boulders.The other thing is people that play there don't fix divots and it seems like no one rakes the bunkers either,alot of footprints.I wish players would care a little more,the groundkeepers cant do everything.They told me that they are getting new sand soon,other than that i still love the course and will return,just need a little TLC. read more

Love this course. It's narrow, challenging, and frustrating but it's always in great condition and everyone that works here are great. We got married here as well and that's where the real superiority lies. Erin and Hope are fantastic and truly made our wedding a spectacular event. like you've probably read by now, the layout is punishingly tight on a few holes, but it makes for a memorable experience. from the tee, hit whatever you're confident hitting in the fairway and you'll play the course well. even if it's a 200yd 4 iron off the tee on every par 4, you'll still be in shape to be on in regulation because none of the par 4s are very long. conditions were generally good, with a few caveats. the greens were the best feature, all of which were in good shape with consistent rolls. the fairways were pretty good, but there were a lot of mushy areas when it hadn't rained in many days. there's a lot of water on the course, so maybe it's just what it is there, but it's frustrating to hit from solid ground at 150, then from a sponge cake inside 100. tee boxes where occasionally a mess, but some were temps as they attempted to re-seed permanent boxes. to their credit, there was a lot of work going into the course on the weekday i played, so they're working on it. a few memorable holes: 8th is a driveable par 4 at ~270, but you'll have to either carry water the entire way or shape it just right. i put my first one in the drink (had the distance but pulled slightly), but got my second one into a small bunker near the green. 10th is a 600+ par 5, which isn't super common around here. it basically goes straight out about 450, then down right another 150. problem is that it's narrow off the tee, so if you dink one into the woods, it's brutal making up the yards to scramble. i was concerned with that it was going to be a slow pace, but we finished our around in about 4 hours. slowed down at the turn but picked back up again. pro shop is sparsely stocked; you can get essentials but don't plan on purchasing any new gear there. staff was nice enough and the lunch we had after our round was totally decent. (came to about $40 for two of us with two beers.) i'll play it again, but i won't rush back. read more

A very enjoyable course. Keep the ball in play and you can really shoot a good score. The course is narrow and demands a measure of accuracy off the tee. The bent grass fairways were extremely well maintained, however the greens were only OK. Some were better than others but it seemed apparent that the course receives a lot of weekend play, given the numerous unhealed ball marks. The starter was very helpful and very friendly. I got there around 9:30 and wanted to walk. He suggested I go off of 10 as a single because it was wide open. I never was held up the entire round. Very nice clubhouse too. read more

Absolute worst golf experience of my life. Tee boxes were garbage along with the fairways. No ranger and an incredibly slow pace. Ranger then came out as we were finishing and complained that we didn't notify them of slow pace by calling the clubhouse. Didn't realize it was my job to pay $75 to play on a crap course while also being the course ranger. Wish I could give it 0 stars. read more

We got married at Butternut in November and it was so beautiful! They were very accommodating and very nice to deal with during the planning process. The only thing I wasn't happy with was the bar tab. We decided to do open bar for cocktail hour only which they estimated at about $3,000, when the bill came it was just under $5,000 for what was suppose to be 1 hour. They were serving free drinks before the ceremony and also went over the 1 hour mark after the ceremony. I would recommend the venue, but stay away from open bar they take advantage of you! read more

This golf course is challenging, tight tight tight. Some of their greens are shared with other holes. Hit it straight and you will be ok. A lot of their tee boxes are tucked away so you have to sneak your ball onto the fairway. The 625 yard par 5 is pretty awesome! Lots of uphill par 3s. A few recommendations for their course: water coolers - didn't see one water cooler on the entire course. You know the little huts with the water in them? Second, the bunkers were horrendous. NO sand whatsoever. None, you could putt out of them and in fact the guy we were playing with did a few times. At $68 I would expect water on the course as well as nice bunkers (sand out of them), and there are a lot of them. NOT HAPPY ABOUT THIS.... On another note, they had a wedding there last Saturday and after we finished putting on 18, they told us they closed off the main entrance so wedding guests could park there and not walk too far in the main lot. Therefore, golfers in the other connecting parking lot would have to exit out of literally a dirt road, slightly uphill then downhill and overgrown (towards the main road) with branches and sticks, etc., probably about 100 yards long the dirt road is. When I was going downhill in my truck right before the main street I noticed the overgrown branches and went slow, and didn't think anything of it. Right after I left the golf course I went to Acton to do an errand. I got out of my truck and there was a HUGE thin scratch about 8 feet long from what I'm guessing were the branches scratching the side of my truck. I called when I got home and the guy said he would go look at the road to make sure it was passable, and would have the manager call me on Monday to discuss. He took my info down. Monday comes around, I receive no call from the manager and talk to the guy again who starts to give me attitude. I give him my contact info once again and he says he will have the manager call me the next day. Tuesday rolls around, no call. I call Wednesday and talk to apparently a different person and he said to call Thursday morning, I called and couldn't get a hold of the manager once again. At this point I'm just pissed that: 1) they make their golfers exit with their vehicles on a "road" that is not cleaned up and is overgrown (maybe they should consider paving this "road" if they want to use it for that) 2) the guy kept on giving me attitude 3) the manager never called to talk to me Me proving the scratch happened there is impossible, I don't have any cameras or anything, but it would have been nice if they offered to do something or make up for it somehow. I am really disappointed in how they handled that - I am 100% confident the scratch came from the overgrown branches as I don't use my truck during the week, only on the weekends, and went to get coffee before golf that morning and didn't see any large 8 ft long scratches on the side of the truck that was scratched. Now I have to get this fixed and pay out of my own pocket. Not a happy camper and will not be going back to this place, all of my golfer friends are aware as well. I bet any money they went and trimmed the branches that jutted out onto the dirt road after I called the first time on Saturday!!! read more

Butternut farms is a challenging Golf course. The 8th hole is a great hole that proves to be very challenging. The 10th hole is ridiculous. It is very long hole. The restraunt and the clubhouse are very good. Paul the Bartender is a very colorful man. overall I have enjoyed my rounds here. I reccomend that everyone come visit this wonderful golf course and play a round of golf. read more
