Summer time is in full swing and that means it's time to go camping. Now I'm no camping pro but I…read morerecently had the opportunity to camp with my family at Elk Neck State Park and we had a great time. The camp ground provides a few different options for your camping needs. Whether you're in the mood for the full camping experience with no electricity or if you would prefer an electrical site to plug in all your goods. The sites offer a decent amount of space for you to spread out with all of your gear. Each site has a fire pit to do some grilling and roast marshmallows and a table with benches, to hang out and enjoy your meals. A bath house with showers are also in each loop, and they're actually pretty well kept, aside from the bugs running around, which is expected. You'll occasionally see the park rangers riding around throughout the day to keep an eye on things, and they're all really friendly. If you're looking to get outside and rough it for a few days or take a much needed break from the stress of the world at trip to Elk Neck for a beautiful camping trip is the way to do it.

The pool was great and seem to be well-maintained. There were plentiful bathrooms and showers everywhere. The woods and grass fields were lovely. Something that stood out was the in-house food service. Feeding over 700 people 2 meals a day is not trivial and they did a great job. Food was always available on time (buffet style) and there were plenty of healthy options, including fruit, salad, and so on. The food team seemed to take pride in their work. Bathrooms: In good condition and functional. This is a campground with rustic cabins, so expectations are admittedly low, but they exceeded them.

After discovering that we had to…read morechoose between water/electricity or sewer because the connections were too far apart, we chose water/electricity. This meant we had to be careful not to fill our gray tank. That was unfortunate. However, the worst was that the circuit breaker for the electricity kept kicking off, so we had no power to run our medical equipment overnight. After 3 phone calls to the office went unanswered, we gave up and turned our generator on. This caused great discomfort to some family members so we ended up having to turn it off. It was an uncomfortable, difficult night, so we didn't get much sleep. Sadly, the other RV with other family members had the same problem at their campsite as well. They had to run their generator all night. Hopefully, the management will come up with a better communication system to deal with problems at their campground when the office is closed. Thankfully, we were only there one night. Update - We received a phone call from the answering service at noon the next day. After explaining the problem, she had the manager call. He called just before 2pm (they close at 2pm everyday). He didn't believe what my dad was saying, but said he would check it out and give us a call. Haven't heard back yet. We deserve a full refund for such a miserable night - for both RVs. We will be sure to spread the word about the service at this campground with our friends who travel in their RVs.

The staff does not actually do much work. More like the parents doing everything. At least in our experience. Pool is nice but not heated. No chairs. I would say the facility is not handicap friendly. With a handicap child I was not permitted to pull my car forward to unload her things. There are lots of stairs and some hills. No ramps or walkways that we saw visible for easier access to the buildings and areas for people who may need it. Poor ventilation throughout. We had to open a lot of windows and doors to get fresh air into every building. The food selection was lacking. Kids tend to be picky so having 1 meal (turkey burger) for all the kids and Gatorade is not ideal. Several kids cried from hunger and thirst so we had to go get food about 20 minutes away. Some variety is always a good idea. And some vending machines for drinks. The ropes course is a major problem. We concluded that it seems pretty dangerous and perhaps should be evaluated for safety regulations. The instructor should have safety ropes attached to him/her on a harness at the bottom, not have children holding ropes. If someone falls, children are not going to be able to stop the ropes. The sizing is off. Made for adults. Not enough rocks to climb. And three children being attached to eachother is not safe. Someone could get seriously hurt. Overall nice place but we probably will not go again.
