There is a Food Bloggers named Cticecreamtour, who told me Buttonwood Farm is one of his top CT spots for ice cream. I tucked away that info, because I live an hour away. However, when I was at Foxwoods with my wife, I realized we were about 15 minutes away. I messaged Cticecreamtour and asked for Recs. He said, anything with chocolate chips, and anything with blueberries. We arrived today, and I was hoping to get an Ice Cream Flight, which Buttonwood does not offer. Instead, I ordered a Banana-less Banana Split that came with 3 scoops, 3 toppings, whipped cream and cherries. For ice cream I chose, Mint Oreo, Peanut Butter Oreo, and Red, White and Blueberry. For my toppings, I chose hot fudge and peanut butter sauce. They do not have candy toppings, but they do have nuts. Cticecreamtour was right. The blueberry ice cream base was amazing. I think it also had a raspberry swirl, marshmallow and chocolate chips. A delicious flavor. Peanut Butter Oreo also was top tier. I liked the Mint Oreo, but it wasn't one of my favorite mint ice creams. The whipped cream was high end. The other toppings were good too. My wife let me try her Chocolate Chip sundae. It has one of the better base vanillas I've had in CT. Great chocolate chips too. A few other tidbits. People who knew what they were doing were getting fresh made waffle cones. I would recommend getting one. They looked good. Also, Buttonwood is known for sunflowers. They were not out yet though. A great farm ice cream experience. 5 Stars

We found this place while driving to/from Mohegan Sun Sky Tower Hotel. We first saw a field of Sunflowers and went to look it up and found out there was a farm that has farm fresh ice cream! We had to give it a try.... Well it is summer time! It is offset from the road on a gravel based ground up on a slight hill. If you drive to fast you could miss one of the best treats known to man/woman. So we parked and there was a line of about 10 people in front of us and behind us. Man you could smell the amazing scent of there homemade waffle cones! You can choose from about 70 plus flavors and it can be in a cup or cone pints and/ quarts that are hand packed! Not to mention they make their waffle cones and whipped cream daily! I chose the butter pecan and my lady chose the black raspberry on a cone! Wow you are talking about a burst of flavor from the ice cream to the cone! Let me explain . Normally when you eat something very sweet you sometimes feel like your teeth have a weird film or just not clean. Not with their farm fresh ice cream! Also, with their homemade waffle cones they actually stay crispy all the way to the bottom! Usually with waffle cones some are too soft or too hard! These are crispy from top to bottom! They have a nice little seating area in a shaded area and seating near the parking area! This place is awesome! You have to try these ice cream! You will not be sorry!! Like I said well it is summer so get yourself some good farm fresh ice cream! You will get decent size scoops that are very good and tasty!

1st time here. Beautiful 70 degree crispy fall Sunday. Have eaten alot of ice cream and this one was one of the best I've had this year. The ice cream was creamy and smooth and full of delicious candy. I ordered one of their Halloween Specials, The "Hocus Pocus" It had Kit Kats, Reese's PB Cups and Reese's Pieces. Delicious.

The best ice cream I've had all year came straight from the farm! Buttonwood Farm makes its own ice cream from milk produced by their own cows. I tried the Indian Spice Pudding flavor--wow, it was amazing! Their homemade waffle cones are massive and can hold two scoops for the price of one. It's a charming, family-run spot with lots of seating and beautiful views of the pasture. Truly as authentic as it gets! HIGHLY RECOMMEND THE ICECREAM and if you like scenic road trip, make this a destination stop! Come and support your local farmer...one scoop at a time!

The grounds are beautiful here and my son was able to see a few cows as well. There were long lines for the ice cream so they must be doing something well. Overall, my wife and I were not impressed with the ice cream options: very basic. The line moved quickly and it was a nice stop after Wicked Tulip. We found the ice cream to be less creamy than expected. Also, the waffle cone was clearly not fresh.

My mother and I came to Buttonwood Farm Ice Cream after Sunflower picking at Buttonwood Farm. When we arrived, the line was long and it was hard to find a parking space. The best tip would be is to have someone find a parking spot while someone else waits in line, and that's exactly what we did. The line was long but we waited about twenty to twenty five minutes so it wasn't a bad wait. Also, while you're waiting in line, there is a QR scan bar that list all the flavors of ice cream. I decided to go with the Peach ice cream made with puréed Peaches and Peach slices. I also went with the Purple Cow which consisted of Black Raspberry ice cream with White Chocolate Chips. I had to go with the Waffle Cone because their waffle cones are freshly made everyday. You could just smell the Waffle Cones getting freshly cooked. One scoop of ice cream was six dollars and two scoops of ice cream was 6.75 so I decided to go with the two scoops. The ice cream was delicious, creamy, and tasted fresh. The Waffle Cone was slightly warm from just being made and I felt like I ate a whole dinner because I was so full. I would definitely wait in line again for another Waffle Cone.

YUM!! I love ice cream and we went here on Saturday afternoon and it did not disappoint. Ice cream is made at the shop and they have so many flavors. I got the coffee Reese & peanut butter Oreo. My husband got coffee mocha & monkey business. It wasn't busy so service was quick and portions were perfect. Would for sure visit again!

Have been coming here for YEARS! The BEST ice cream around and worth the drive from wherever you are. The sunflower fields are simply breathtaking and are a must see! Sunsets are stunning

This is by far my favorite creamery. The lines at this location is crazy but they work pretty quick. They usually have 4 to 5 service windows open the serve the crowd. Great flavors and the ice cream is so ruch and creamy. My sister has the nondairy version and she swore it tasted just like it was real ice cream. I just couldn't resist and ordered my banana split.I was only able to eat half and had to get a cover for the rest to take home. This place is not cheap, but you'll figure out why after your first bite or lick! This place is fantastic if you can tolerate the wait.

All for supporting local businesses but we found the Buttonwood Farm Ice Cream prices to be highway robbery. Portion sizes were small considering we paid over $5 per cup and over $8 per waffle cone. That being said, we loved the variety of flavors and majestic sunflower views. We were fortunate enough to visit Buttonwood Farm during the sunflowers for wishes event... the sunflower farms were beautiful, staff was helpful, and we loved the cause. I would definitely go out of my way to visit the sunflower farm during the sunflowers for wishes week but would not plan on re-trying the ice cream unless their prices became more affordable for families.

Came here with my dad on a Friday afternoon and it wasn't too busy which was nice. It's a nice space with the cows nearby you can look at while you enjoy your ice cream. We both got a scoop of the Easter Sundae ice cream which was vanilla ice cream with KitKats, brownie chunks, Oreos, crushed Reeses and a caramel swirl. We also topped this with their homemade whipped cream and wow it was all so delicious!! I could order a bowl of that whipped cream on its own, seriously. They have so many flavors to choose from and even some non-dairy options. A great ice cream place to come to with friends or the whole family!

Coffee Reese's. Had I known the Coffee part was going to be this good, I would have ordered just plain Coffee.

I've been going here for a few years now and I have to say that they do have the best Ice Cream in this region of southern New England. I co-owned an Ice Cream shop back in the early eighties, so I learned a lot about what makes a rich, creamy batch of Ice Cream. It's the Butterfat content. Anything at or above 16% is a topnotch Ice Cream. Just from a few tastes, I figured that theirs was at this level. To give you some perspective, Friendly's, back in the day was at 11%. Very few shops will offer Ice Cream at this level because the higher the Butterfat content, the more expensive it is to make. And that is why the prices here may seem high, but you are getting quality for what you are paying. If you go during peak periods, this stand can get quite busy, but they seem to know when their busy times are and they have enough staff on to keep the lines moving at a quicker than normal pace, compared to other shops. I definitely recommend coming here in July when the Sunflowers are in bloom in the adjacent farm fields. The view of these fields makes for a relaxing escape from the hustle & bustle of city life. If you do come in July, get the Sunflower Ice Cream, which they only make when the flowers are in bloom. I make multiple visits during this time becuase it is such a delicious flavor. And one more thing, if you like Coffee Ice Cream, then this is your place. The best I have ever eaten!

    The line!

Holy Heck, guys!!! When we pulled up to this place, I was amazed by the line... like doesn't anywhere else in CT (RI?? I'm not even sure which state this is in ) serve ice cream??? But, we drove 30 minutes to get there, so I wasn't about to say never mind! We waited in line, and I'll be honest, it wasn't like crazy fast, but it wasn't a line for a Universal Studios ride without a fast pass either. Besides, I enjoyed my company while waiting, and everyone else there was ridiculously patient as well. The service, once we hit the window, was friendly and efficient! The ice cream and waffle cones were delicious ( though I'm not sure what Yeti, Elephant trunk, or Purple Cow flavors were meant to be ). And, I believe the prices though crazy, are reasonable for this day and age.

Ask the Community - Buttonwood Farm Ice Cream

Do they have doggie ice cream?

    Nope. I just asked.

How in bloom are the sunflowers at the farm at the end of the season, like the last weekend in October? Is it worth going then?

Hi Zara! Our sunflowers are planted to bloom from July 22-30 for the 2017 season. You can visit the farm in October for our corn maze, pumpkins, and fall fun!

I am all for new trendy vibey establishments but there's something so special about that old school classic vibe. There is so much attention to detail when the branding was designed that mustn't be over looked. The owners are also outstanding humans and constantly giving back to the community and supporting Local fundraisers. The staffing is usually on the younger side but I can appreciate a young teenager that wants to get out there and work in the community. Social interaction is super important in one's growth and you get to experience that first hand the more often you visit. I have always had great experiences, and I believe the owners are doing things right when they are interviewing and finding goo staffing. You can tell Mel has a passion for baking/culinary/sweets and provides an absolute top notch experience. From sundaes to ice cream flights and even big kahuna challenges, there is literally something for everybody. The menu is forever changing with seasons and customer input :) I tend to bring my young boys in for a small treat on the summer weekends when we're in downtown Westerly. We purposely plan on getting there at opening which is noontime. At that time of day they are much slower than later on into the evening. This allows my picky/indecisive boys to try a few flavors before committing to something. They can also perouse all the candy/ sweet treats, which they will inevitably convince me to get something to take home with them. I highly recommend stopping in for an after dinner sundae after a nice dinner at one of the other local dining establishments Cheers *****Spoiler alert.
