It's hard to learn one person's name, but having to learn that seven people that were on the tour and being correct every time it was impressive. They give you a helmet and teach you from the beginning how to ride, slow down, come to fast stop so you are comfortable before you even start the tour. I absolutely enjoyed every moment of it. Along the way, you'll come across really interesting Civil War landmarks and historic markers that make the hike feel like stepping back in time. It's also very family-friendly and dog-friendly! I was able to hike it with my 4-year-old daughter walking beside me and my 1.5-year-old on my back, and we all had a blast. The views at the top are so worth it, and the whole mountain is filled with a sense of history and beauty. If you're looking for a hike that blends nature, family fun, and historic charm, Kennesaw Mountain is definitely worth the visit.

A group of 11 Yelpers went on Alpharetta Tours' HOWLpharetta Ghost Tour this past Thursday night…read more(9/5). Thanks to Yelp OTP intern Sarah G. for organizing (http://www.yelp.com/events/alpharetta-uye-alpharetta-food-truck-alley-and-howlpharetta-ghost-tour). We were originally scheduled to do the ghost tour on August 8, but forecasted inclement weather at the time postponed our event. The day of the originally scheduled event, I received a phone call from Alpharetta Tours informing me of the event postponement. I also received an email with a new set of tickets. The process was handled well. Tickets were $12 per person. We got a special group rate. The regular price is $15 per person. We met up with Jen Hunt, owner/operator of Alpharetta Tours, around 8:15pm in front of the Dodd Hotel in historic downtown Alpharetta. This was just around nightfall. The tour lasted about 2 hours and it was a walking tour. Bring comfortable walking shoes! Jen was a really cool tour guide. She's a history buff and you can tell she knows her stuff, especially when it comes to the City of Alpharetta. She has done her research. The HOWLpharetta Ghost Tour can kind of be thought of as two tours in one: (1) a history tour of Alpharetta and (2) a ghost tour. We learned a lot about many of the buildings in downtown Alpharetta -- what they used to be, who used to live/work in them, etc. We learned that Old Roswell St. used to be the main thoroughfare through town. We learned that Native Americans used to be shackled, transported barefoot, and buried in the surrounding area. The HOWLpharetta Ghost Tour is more of walking, educational, and historic tour more than anything else. If you're looking for a scary, haunted house experience, then you'll probably be bored. We spent a good amount of time at each stop. Jen gave us more than enough information on the history and backstory behind many of Alpharetta's historic sites and buildings. We learned about multiple prominent families in Alpharetta's history, such as the Dodds and Webbs. The tour involved a lot of walking and standing. Most of us were tired at the end, both because of the walking/standing and because it was the end of a long (week)day. We stayed within a 2-mile radius of the downtown area. Most of the walking was done on paved surfaces such as sidewalks and asphalt. However, there was one part where we were behind an old cotton mill (IIRC) and were walking in the dark on gravel. Speaking of the dark, a flashlight would prove useful, though it's not necessary. We visited many closed/empty storefronts, businesses, and houses (with permission). We also visited the nearby local cemetary, Resthaven Cemetary. I have never seen nor experienced a ghost or paranormal activity in my life, but I don't rule out the possibility of these entities existing. However, I do tend to be a skeptic. I find the whole "orbs" thing to be funny. Jen explained that if we snapped a photo and saw orbs in our photo, that the orbs represent young spirits unable to fully manifest themselves yet. I personally think these orbs are just specks of dust or other matter flying in the air or perhaps light reflecting strangely through the camera lens. I did get some nice shots of orbs. She told a lot of corny ghost jokes. I couldn't believe how many she had in her repertoire. Before going on the tour, be sure to read the FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) on Alpharetta Tours' web site. It has a lot of useful and helpful info. There are no restrooms on the tour route, so be sure to go before you start the tour. Also, you may get bitten by a mosquito or two, so you might consider putting on some insect repellent. Finally, be sure to tip your guide at the end, especially if you had fun. We had fun because of our guide and because of the company.

Our…read moreoriginally scheduled tour was postponed due to the chance of severe weather and she was so easy to work with throughout rescheduling and was very accommodating. We emailed back and forth so much that I felt like we were friends! :) First of all, she is adorable -- corny jokes and all -- and I was really impressed with her knowledge of the history of Alpharetta. She's not only been thorough in her research, but I can't believe she's memorized all of that. She's a great storyteller. As far as paranormal activity, I'm a skeptic, but I'm also easily spooked, so I thought this would be a really fun activity. Plus you get a bit of exercise walking around! I definitely saw some stuff, or at least think I did. Moving mirrors inside of buildings, flickering lights, etc. It was just the right amount of spooky. Even if you go and don't see anything, there's still lots of creepy stories to be heard! My only complaint, and this has nothing to do with the tour itself, is that there were still a fair amount of people out/cars driving by/etc. from 8:30-10:30. It might've had to do with the fact that we went on a Thursday after Alpharetta Food Truck Alley, but I would have loved a darker, quieter setting just to enhance the mood. Plan a private tour and get 10+ of your friends together (or plan a UYE like I did!) for a group discount. I'm sure the public tours are great, too, and they're every Friday and Saturday night. I wouldn't say it was "comedy" as much as it was a witty, funny tour guide that liked to make a few wise cracks along the way. We loved it. The route must be known by the locals, as many folks on the streets seemed to know the Funny Bus and would wave and smile as we drove by. We had a fun group, and we mostly enjoyed meeting some new people and having some fun with those folks. We learned some things and had some laughs along the way. Would totally recommend. And yeah - it was a hot day, but we really didn't think it was bad on the bus - the open-air style (no windows, really) allowed air to flow through and keep things comfortable enough.

It was cold and windy that day; luckily, the trolley was heated, and the weather did not affect the tour. This tour is a great deal, priced under $40, to get a detailed overview of the main neighborhoods in and around Atlanta. These days, you will pay a lot more to drive around in an Uber or Lyft, and you won't get a tour guide giving you the history behind the landmarks you will see. The only stop made on this tour is at the Martin Luther King Jr. Center. You will have some time to explore the Center, but not enough to see everything in this area. Ebenezer Baptist Church is next to the Center, and the trolley drives by MLK Jr.'s birth home. At the time I visited, the home was temporarily closed for renovations. For a more in-depth tour of the neighborhood, you will need to return on your own.

All are located within a 1/2-mile radius, and 2 are literally within about 200 yards of each other. Our second stop was at Barrington Hall. It is located across Hwy 120 from Bulloch Hall, a bit closer to Roswell Road. They have a small parking lot out front. Like the others, there is no fee here. We again wandered up to the house's front facade (which faces away from the parking lot towards Hwy 120) entered via the front door. The docent on duty was again friendly and just asked for our zip code and how we'd heard about the venue. You are then free to wander the house via whatever route you like. Most rooms have a sign with a 4-digit code. You call a phone number (the same one used at the other 2 houses) and enter successive codes as you proceed. For each code, there is an accompanying description of the room's historical context and of its furnishings. These mansions all seemed to follow the same basic floorplan - a central linear hallway with 2 or 3 rooms off each side and a staircase at the end. This house was a bit smaller than Bulloch Hall, but had slightly more furnishings. This home also had more of a formal garden in the back. If you only had time to tour one house of the 3, I'd still begin with Bulloch Hall. However, this place was nice to visit if you have another 30 - 45 minutes.

The BeltLine Tour is a FREE 3-hour bus tour of the BeltLine which I learned is a 22-mile loop of…read morehistoric rail lines that will eventually create parks, trails, transit, and new development for Atlanta. We took the tour last wknd, and enjoyed learning about the BeltLine project while driving through the Atlanta neighborhoods like Glenwood, Grant Park, Boulevard Crossing, Capital View, Peachtree Hills, etc. and some historic sites, too. Highlight of the tour was seeing the Bellwood Quarry which will be the centerpiece for the future Westside Reservoir Park - the largest park in Atlanta. I was amazed - not to the level like when I first saw the Grand Canyon - but almost, just b/c I never knew such a gem existed INSIDE Atlanta. In case you're wondering about the location, it's behind Marietta Blvd and right now it's fenced off to the public. They say the only way you can see it is taking this tour. Check out the photos - beautiful, right?! The BetlLine project is huge, and has the potential to transform Atlanta. They say it will ultimately connect 45 neighborhoods. I also learned that Atlanta is the one of the most underparked cities - we're at 3.8% whereas most cities are 10-15%. Check out the website to get more info on the project. The tour is a great way to spend your Friday or Saturday morning, and then grab some brunch afterwards :) They book fast and advanced reservations are required. Our tour guide was great and highly knowledgeable but she does talk non-stop. Three hrs is a long time and honestly, I did doze off a few times :) But seeing the Quarry was totally worth it, and I definitely learned a lot about Atlanta.

This was my case during the FYLA event that I attended. The shuttle that we boarded was comfortable and air-conditioned (for those worried about suffering through Atlanta summer temperatures or having to weather a rough ride). Our guide, Shanté (or Shauntay maybe?), was a doll, knew a lot about the project and the city as a whole. She seemed to be seasoned, as she spoke clearly and timed everything she said just right, as she stood with her back to the front, to face our group. I learned a lot and saw neighborhoods that I had never seen or heard of. The architecture of Atlanta is something to admire, as it is unique. I enjoyed seeing the Bellwood Quarry Reservoir (look at our photos, it is gorgeous) and the Old Fourth Ward Park. Now I am hoping that I can convince my landscape architect-in-training sister to join me for this tour. I was told to wait a couple months before going again, to get some new information. Keep in mind that the tours book to capacity at least a month in advance, to plan wisely (though our guide said that if you are really interested, show up and see if some people who have reserved dropped out the last minute--she said this happens quite frequently). If you want, take along some snacks. Just make sure to empty your bladder and any other organs that may need to be voided before arriving to the start point of the tour. The closest bathroom before taking off from the Inman Park MARTA station is at Dough Bakery and the staff restrict bathroom use to patrons. Don't judge me for getting a grapefruit scone so that I could relieve myself. You will make a stop a little bit before the halfway point of the tour at a Kroger (is this murder Kroger? I'm unsure), where you can pick up nourishment and use the facilities. But it can be an uncomfortable first hour or so, if you are thinking you can just hold it. Okay, let's move past the bathroom thing... You should learn more about the A, its history, its neighborhoods, and the progress of the BeltLine. This tour will help you do all those things in a span of just 180 minutes, give or take.
