By The Sword Inc listed a product on their site that they did not have in stock. I learned about this post-order via an email. After being informed of my options, I opted for a refund on my payment given that the item I ordered was a very specific item and the alternatives they did have would not work. They gave me a partial refund and refused to refund it in whole, by pointing at their policy of charging a fee on refunds. This is of course absurd given the fact that the refund was a result of their inability to only list the items they have in stock on their website. I tried to work this out with an email communication and they would not budge. It was a $3 difference that cost any and all future business from me and provided a poor review. I hope the $3 was worth it. I would not recommend working with them. EDIT: The owner, Lindy, hit me up in Yelp DMs to give me even more garbage and telling me to "Take the responsibility of my choice" in asking for the refund of the item for the item they didn't have in stock at the time of my order. She is unwilling to make any concessions on the errors of her business model at all and puts full blame on me. Atrocious customer service, worst I have seen in my online shopping experience. -100 / 10. Customer service is horrendous! I bought an item that came in wrong.. wrong color, wrong insignia, craftsmanship was just as bad. Stitches not lined up. Left about a 4in string from the stitching that they said to "just cut off" I spent over 200 on this I expected it to be perfect! When I asked to return they declined giving me my full refund. Apparently if they send you the wrong item they make YOU pay return shipping plus to ship it back. So $45 bucks in shipping!? Wow. Do not I repeat do not do business here. Purchased a Highlander Duncan Katana by Marto from this website. It arrived with the handle destroyed. I have purchased several other swords of the same series and manufacturer before from various vendors over the years, so I know what to expect in terms of internal packaging. This particular item had inadequate packaging. I sent this vendor 18 photos from various angles - sword, interior & exterior boxes. Vendor responded that "claim has been started", and "we just wait." When I asked again about the approximate timeline on the claim process and receiving a replacement, vendor quoted 8 weeks for backorder. I started a PayPal customer service process in the meantime, and the vendor just responded with rather combative tone. Strongly recommend hard avoid on this vendor. read more

Don't offer what you don't have! Order a pair of swords from them, with the reasonable assumption that if the order was accepted, then they had the items on-hand. Shortly after my account was billed I got an email advising me that they in fact didn't have it in stock and expected a "1-3 month delay" to maybe get the item in. I was offered a somewhat similar sword that they claimed to have on-hand and or "store credit" that would be good for a year. I opted to cancel the order so I could re-apply the funds to a shop that actually kept track of inventory and items in-stock. My refund was reduced by their 4% fee that apparently is hidden in their "terms". GO ahead, keep the 4% and know that I'm going to buy not just 2 but 3 swords from competitors! read more

This seller trans-ships orders from other states and then blames overseas manufacturing upon product error rather than taking responsibility. Mistakes happen in business, but how those mistakes are handled is the difference between a good and bad company. After a few days of being kept on edge, multiple snarky seller emails, and two calls I placed to follow-up, I hope this can finally be resolved. Saw a listing for a sword, paid $200ish dollars for it, then got an email later that week saying they didn't have the sword. They said I could choose another item or wait two months for it to restock. I chose to wait. I checked in three months later, they said they would not have the sword back in stock. I asked for a refund, they said I had to pay a 5% fee for the refund. I said that was weird because they never had the item in stock, they responded with a very combative tone saying I had signed an agreement and I had to pay 5%. I disputed through my bank, got a full refund through that, and apparently have been blocked from even looking at the By the Sword website. Long story short, avoid this website. read more

I've bought from By The Sword a number of times and have been overall happy with my purchases. One thing annoys me though. An item will be priced at, say, $60. I'll buy it, then get told before they actually run the charge through that the price is now actually $70. Same thing happens if you inquire first about an item to make sure it's in stock or to ask a question about it. They'll tell you that the item is in stock but that the price has gone up. If an item is IN STOCK, then it should be sold at the stated price. The seller is making a profit based on what they paid for the item. If it is OUT of stock and the seller has to get it from the manufacturer, who may have raised the price since the seller last purchased it, I could understand the price increase. The woman who answers the phone (and who seems to be the only customer service person at this company) will tell you that they can't possibly keep the availability and prices of their thousands of items current, so they do this when an inquiry or purchase is made. Still comes across as dishonest in a way, but even with their price increases, their prices tend to be lower than elsewhere. If you buy from them be sure to ask if an item is in fact available first. Another thong I've noticed is (in my experience at least) the inability to use By-The-Sword coupons that you find online for 10% off or whatever. read more

This company is absolute crap! DO NOT ORDER!! My mother bought an outfit from here for my sister's renaissance wedding, it came in damaged with a loose grommet and a ripped grommet. Also the colors on the website were of an olive green which is one of the wedding colors and the item came in as a light Kelly green. Being a graphic designer I do know that colors differ on computers, also my sister worked through college as a seamstress, but they don't differ THAT much. We contacted the company and we were completely talked down to. We were told that the olive green that is shown is not an option.... because THAT MAKES SENSE. Not only did they refuse returns, they wouldn't even give STORE CREDIT if the items were returned. Not that we wanted to place an order for a different item or have anything else to do with them. This place is UNREAL. Ordered a pair of boots with no indication on the site that it was not in stock. After a couple of weeks, I emailed to check on the item and was told that it was backordered. I would email every few weeks asking for updates and was told that the boots were coming soon. When it was clear that the boots would not arrive in time for the event I needed (bear in mind that I ordered them *2 full months* before the event), I emailed the store to cancel my order and opened a PayPal dispute (because they'll claim that they can't refund PayPal fees and will charge you to cancel an order or make a return--a blatant lie). The seller responded that the boots were ready to ship and asked me what I wanted to do. I responded 4 minutes later to continue cancelling my order, but apparently that wasn't fast enough, because they then claimed that the boots were already shipped and they couldn't do anything about it. They then proceeded to block my email address and IP address when I asked why the item was sent after I explicitly told them to cancel the order. This store has unbelievably bad customer service and negligible ethics with regard to their business, and it is generally just a nightmare. Save yourself the money and the trouble. read more

ARRR... AVOID THIS COMPANY AT ALL COSTS!!! You have to give one star in order to post a review, but these folks don't deserve that. They may sell costumes and equipment for pirates, but that doesn't mean they need to behave like pirates. Their customer service is the absolute worst. They argue, delay, give you incomplete information, make excuses, and refuse to match prices. They even try to avoid giving you the tiny discounts that they offer on their own website. They refused to honor their own coupon for a 20% discount and didn't offer anything by way of a customer satisfaction discount as a good will gesture. I had barely hung up the phone when I got an auto-response email from their system offering me a 5% discount as encouragement to place the very order on which I'd just been denied any discount!! Left hand meet the right hand. It was so ridiculous it was almost funny. Lindy is just awful. She took so long to get back to me about matching a price (the answer was unsurprisingly - NO) and then about honoring that tiny 5% discount that I was up against a deadline. So, I finally got a whole $8.25 off, but I paid to ship a $150 item when most e-tailers offer free shipping. Some offer free shipping on all orders, but almost all offer free shipping on orders above $75 or $100. To make matters worse, the By the Sword website calculated the shipping to be $16 and then arbitrarily raised it to $23.30 at the end of the process - causing yet another delay and wrestling match with Lindy to correct. It took forever for the boots I ordered to arrive and when they did they were cheap, shoddy and, most importantly, DAMAGED. The lining in one boot was glued wrong - all torn inside the heel and folded over. I bought the boots in July and it took until November to get this resolved. I paid to ship the boots back and then was charged a 15% restocking fee ($30!!!) on damaged merchandise. I can only hope that they didn't actually restock these and sell them to some other unsuspecting sucker... I mean, customer. It cost me $76 in shipping and re-stocking fees to just to get a look at some damaged boots that I couldn't use. That's over half of what the boots cost! I would have exchanged them for different boots, but the only replacement option required a 3 week wait and the production for which I needed the boots would have been long over by then. So, I couldn't use the boots they sent and there wasn't a replacement available. It took a month for them to credit the return back to my PayPal account. Thank heaven for PayPal who refunded my return shipping and then made up the difference between what I paid and what By the Sword refunded - including the restocking fee AND the original shipping cost. The PayPal Terms of Service do not allow merchants to charge a restocking fee. BTS busted themselves by admitting to PayPal that they had charged a 15% re-stocking fee. When they were caught red handed and PayPal told them to return the fee, they changed their story and claimed that they were charging a fee because I hadn't returned the damaged items inside their 14-day return window. PayPal knew when they received the boots because they already had copies of my shipping receipts and had reimbursed me for the return shipping well inside that 14-day window. By the Sword was caught in that lie too. When I encountered the first problem with this order I asked to speak to a supervisor, Lindy told me that she didn't have a supervisor - on a subsequent call about the delay and restocking fee she said that the delay in processing the return was due to "waiting for approval from her supervisor." I said, "I thought you didn't have a supervisor..." and asked to talk to that person. She told me that the supervisor always refuses come to the phone. Turns out the "supervisor" is her husband, David. Be careful because they do business under other names as well... Fortunately, there are reputable retailers out there including Dress Like A Pirate, Ravenswood Leather, Dark Knight Armoury and Historical Emporium. Do yourself a favor and buy from one of them. read more

Do not order from this company! A month ago (4/18/19) I ordered a medieval belt quiver. The description says 3-6 week shipping time. After 4 weeks I contacted them (05/20/19) using their live chat and spoke to someone (no name given), asking for an update. I was told that they have not received it yet to ship to me and I would receive an email with tracking number when shipped. I asked if there was any idea when it would ship because I had a medieval archery tournament this weekend and was hoping it would be here by then, the response I got was "really!! it says 3-6 weeks shipping time on the site.". The rep then claimed to check with the buyer (I am the buyer so I assume the maker of the quiver) and said there was no ETA on it. I made the comment that I had a feeling that it was going to take longer than six weeks to get my order and that after 4 weeks the maker should have an idea when the order should be made (apparently, they contract with someone in Europe to make the quiver). The rep stated that I had changed my order on 4/22 (I only change the size on a quiver that had not even been made yet.) and therefore it hadn't been 4 weeks (BS! Order place on 4/18) and 3-6 weeks was only an estimate, so there 3-6 week timeframe listed on their website was a a lie as there is no guarantee of 3-6 weeks. I mentioned I was concerned that they have no idea when it will get here or if it has even been made yet, especially given how much time that has already elapsed. When I told the rep this would be my last order and would advise my friends to never order from their company, I was offered a quiver in stock that was shorter than what I ordered. I decline due to needing a longer quiver. 3-6 weeks means you will get the order with 3-6 weeks not whenever. I told the rep it was misleading to say 3-6 weeks when it wont be done within the six weeks and that was a shady business practice. The rep tried informed me that you can't get this quiver at Walmart and I responded that while true, they are not the only company that sells quivers. After I again informed the rep that I would inform my friends to stay away from this company, the rep abruptly cancelled my order, ended the chat and literally banned me from the website (every time I try to bring up the website it says refused). I placed an order for a couple of swords and accessories last May 2012 and did not hear anything. I inquired about it in June. Still nothing. I didn't hear anything regarding the order until OCTOBER notifying me that the order had been on backorder. Then when I spoke with Darlene stating that I wanted a refund for one of the items she stated that she needed a supervisor to assist because she had never done a refund like that before, since the order was so old. I asked her to process it and send me an e-mail confirmation. One week later, no e-mail. I called and spoke with the manager and she kept asking me for clarification on what I wanted to do. I was more than clear. After asking me four times she finally processed it and I later got the rest of my order. However, when I did get the one sword, it looked very cheap!! I ordered a different sword from KENNESAW CUTLERY for about half the price, got much better service, much faster delivery and the quality of the product is a thousand times better!!!! I am going to return the sword I bought from By The Sword. Also of note, when you call, they do not answer the phone in a business/professional manner (they just say hello this is (name) - as opposed to "thank you for calling By The Sword"), and when looking at their return policies, it seems like they will only accept a return if they feel like it. I ordered a simple dress for my wife nearly two weeks before the event for which it was to be used. Half of the order showed up and the other did not. While I ordered and *paid* for FedEx, they apparently like to change who they ship through, so one part of the dress showed up through USPS, while the other was shipped separately through UPS and is lost somewhere in that system. After exhaustively going through Customer service I was basically told that the only way to get this item in time was to place a second order (paying for the dress a second time), with overnight shipping, at a shipping cost that was half again as much as the original dress. I'm not blaming them for the UPS loss, but I find it ridiculous that their choice of carriers (not the one I selected) caused the issue. Will not order from this company again. read more

This is not only a review but a question directed at the seller. I made an order and could not find my confirmation email because it was filtered into promotions. I have no tracking number. There are no reviews on Yelp or facebook that are more current than 2017. I am fully prepared to dispute this charge and or report this vendor because after I threatened to file a complaint I was IP banned from both of these web domains. I made it clear that I am not comfortable with the form of proof of purchase I have made. That I will not have my money taken and I demand to know whether or not that money will be refunded or if I am to take some sort of legal action. I can dispute the charge through my bank which can possibly cost this seller up to 2500.00 usd in fines for reverse charging. I can also take this to small claims court in the county of the place of business. Now I have no way of knowing if the order is being canceled or if I will be receiving the product. All domains listed through facebook and the web are Bytheswordinc.com or By-the-sword.com this is completely disconcerting and I had no way of knowing if I was contacting the initial seller. The sister site has 0 reviews and 0 feedback indicating it is possibly a site clone. I made it known that if this was a fraudulent third party taking advantage of me I would in fact get back my money. I was then contacted as if my concern was ridiculous. I was then forwarded a second receipt that had the same invoice of customer id and order number that I do have proof of. Why is there no ship date? Why was I contacted, but left without a proper answer when I had called back? By law I can have this charge investigated by my bank 60 days after it is cleared. This seller has up to 90 days to resolve this dispute with my bank which can incur a higher fine. Why would they not respond to me that the order was being canceled? I am just another online customer with reasonable concerns and total capability to rescind this order or pursue it in a lawful conduct. Please contact me over email only in regards to this order that I have placed on 04/17/20 and understand that you have not only taken my money and failed to provide a ship date, but you have failed to properly correspond with a customer the intended date of arrival of a product that you have taken payment for. You have not contacted me to tell me that the order has been canceled. I will be more than happy to file a claim and report both of these vendors if I cannot be assured that I will in fact have resolution to this issue. I will be more than happy to remove this review once my money is returned. No customer should be given a receipt that has no determination of ship date and be made to pay a 2-day ship fee without a date set for shipping. Looking for a good Halloween costume? Do yourself a favor and avoid this nightmare. Eight months ago (yes EIGHT!), I placed an order online for various items for a nifty medieval Halloween costume. Everything arrived on time except a pair of poulaines... those are shoes. By the Sword did not inform me till after I sent three emails to them that my poulaines were on back order, and would arrive shortly- 6 to 8 weeks... Eight MONTHS later, my poulaines showed up. When I asked if my unopened, unused poulaines could be refunded, By the Sword informed me they were custom made for me (I feel so special)... not returnable, non-refundable. I understand this must be very precise work cobbling shoes to such exacting detail... namely, check the box next to your size-- "10". Okay, all sarcasm aside, this lack of professionalism, lack of courtesy, and lack of honesty on the part of this business puts By the Sword at the absolute bottom of my list. The instrument was in our possession less than 2 months. We were told by the company's owner, Lindy, that the time period for returns was 30 days- and that we had exceeded that limit. We were never informed of any return or warranty of 30 days, verbal or written. The company offered only to give us the name of a repair technician that we could take the instrument to at our expense. RIPOFF ALERT!!!!! Ordered boots and asked 3 weeks later if still possible to change colors they said I could but would need to give them sizes for custom pair. Being I was charged $188 for these boots and three weeks later they notify me that they need sizes I decided to cancel because it would take another 10 weeks to recieve boots. They said I could not cancel because they are handmade boots and they had already started to produce them. I asked them since they are custom boots as to how you can start production with out foot measurements. They then stated They made a mistake in asking for foot measurements and said I put down size 12 as requested for foot size which I did but did not give any other measurements. She then said they were standard boot size. Where do see anyone charge $188 for standard boots. When I told her this she said it was the same price for custom and standard boots. I later put in a claim with paypal. since than they have blocked me from website and email. I am attempting to appeal paypals decision because I was not given the chance to rebuttal by the swords statements. Horrible customer service. I complained to them about a product and they accepted a return for exchange on a knife that had a loose handle, was poorly put together and not as described. I paid to send it back for an exchange and they turned around and sent it right back saying it was against their terms and conditions. They actually used some kind of white glue to try to fix the handle and expected me to be okay with that. their T&C does say that they dont return sharpened items but I assume that if they send you an item that is damaged it can at leaste be refunded... I sent them an email and let them know that it was totally unacceptable and they needed to make it right or I would complain to the BBB. They responded that I could "slander them" if I wanted to. I ordered an item yesterday and chose UPS delivery at the shipping page. When I got my shipping email, it said USPS! I went to their website and chatted with a representative who said if I had read the terms and conditions I would understand. I told him that was misleading and he/she actually asked how it was misleading. I pointed out that I chose UPS for delivery and it was now going through the Post Office. He wanted to know why that was a problem. I could hardly believe that they had a mentally challenged orangutan chatting with customers! I asked if I would be refunded the difference in the shipping costs and he said that boxes and people to package the item was covered in the shipping costs. Again, this is extremely misleading! I wish I could give a zero on this review, because they apparently have a bunch of zeroes working for them there and care nothing about customer service. I would advise against anyone buying anything from them as they are liars and cheats. read more
