There's nothing like it elsewhere in Louisville! Every day of the year is a costume party / Halloween celebration. You could spend a long time, minimum an hour, browsing the aisles and appreciating the items you wouldn't typically find on a store shelf. We love, love, love the animated rooms that feel like mini haunted houses. It's a great opportunity to see what's inside the box before you make the investment. Some of the items are not for sale, having been handmade by a store associate to make their customers smile. Prices are fair and aligned with other sources. They do allow you to try on items which is nice. Some can be more expensive and you'd want to be certain they fit well. Besides costumes they have a ton of accessories and party themed decor. Parking is a bit tough. There's very limited space next to the building and much of the street parking is metered or a pay lot. Around Halloween it can take a few passes to find an available spot. No food or drinks allowed inside so leave them in the car. read more

Caufield's is an amazing gem in downtown Louisville. You can find costumes and props for just about every occasion. For Halloween and other Otho day diehards, there are tons of freaky and festive things to choose from. They also have a lot of retro spooky scenes, so walking through the massive store is always an adventure. The folks running it are friendly and eager to show you around. If you're looking for gag gifts or party favors, they also have a good selection at fairly reasonable prices. Caufields, call me weird but, as a Louisville native I have not set foot in this store until recently. A friend and I were killing time until the Beer fest at Frazier began. Located on 10th and Main sits Louisville's oldest costume store. Going in the store had a great layout but, the only kicker is the old building smell. My friend gave away about me being there the first time and one employee said I had to visit "The Dungeon". Had no idea what that meant but will get to that in a bit. We walked most of the store and my friend got occupied by talking to someone they knew for quite a bit so I decided to peek into "The Dungeon", one of the employees I refer to as the cool older lady with tattoos got some things set up for me to go in however I was a tad nervous to go by myself lol, she was kind enough to go in with me. I did only have one jump scare but, won't spoil it on here for those who haven't been. After that my friend was done talking to their friend, we went to the other side of the store where the Halloween house was set up and the old tv and vhs tape set up. They also have gag gifts and milestone birthday stuff on that side as well. I love this store just as much as I love Halloween. Don't forget the haunted house area in the back of the store. There is a small parking lot and street parking. The street parking on Main Street is metered. Caufields novelty is a year round Halloween superstore located just on the other side of the underpass where the popular museum row of downtown Louisville Kentucky is. One cool thing about this novelty shop is it is home to the worlds largest vampire bat that hangs on the side of the building and stares down the worlds largest bat at Lousiville slugger down the block. So with that type of creativity you can imagine what lies in wake for you inside the store. Now, I've been meaning to Visit this store for years. I've heard great things. This past Thursday me and the family along with some friends of the family made the trip to get some zombie gear and make up for the scheduled annual Lousiville zombie attack/walk. Walking in and the store is much larger then anticipated. There are 4 separate rooms of spooky and fun goodies. They had plenty of zombie make up and accessories that more then met our needs. The costumes and decorations is massive. They even have some nostalgic decorations that look like they are from the 80's and 90's The very back room has the very spooky and fun animatronic decorations. It's basically a mini haunted house back there. So many cool decorations that you will not find anywhere else. Like most seasonal holiday pop up shops This year round one is very pricey and expensive. Halloween decorations are whey pricey unFortunately. They did have decent prices on some of there costumes. But if your thinking is "they are year around so they probably have prove breaks", you would be wrong. The place was well upkept and the workers were very nice and hip to the local scene. They could tell from our merch we were gonna do the zombie walk. So they were very helpful. Overall the damage for my family of 6 was just under $200. Then we got home and an hour later the zombie walk was cancelled due to lack of police patrol. All sales final on receipt so we will be equipped for Halloween or next years zombie walk. Overall very awesome and fun shop. I'd prefer to support a local business like this over a spirit Halloween anyday. It's a bit of a haul to the busy downtown and they have tough hours to make (close at 5pm most of the year). But if you can make it to caufields it is well worth it. read more

Holy. moly. I almost feel stupid for never coming here before to costume shop. They literally have everything, and multiple rooms filled with something for every occasion. This place has been around for a long time now, and it's a fine example of a local business gem in West Lou. Costumes, masks, wigs, makeup and other party-type items can be found here. And not just for Halloween..you will find themed treasures for just about every other holiday too. One of the biggest pluses is that they have their own parking lot. Always a win for downtown. I like the display of the Halloween decor in the back best of all. It's scary and fun, all in one! I think I bought a gray beard from here once, but usually I just come with friends when they're needing something for the holiday. It's nice to walk around and look at what's available when it's not too busy - it can get very busy and very crowded inside the closer you get to Halloween. They have some... questionable costumes that I am surprised exist at all. I won't be spending my money here now that I know they carry certain costumes, but if that changes, I guess I'll reconsider. It was 7:30 p.m. -- half an hour until closing time on the Saturday before Halloween. And the Caufields clerks were still patient and helpful. Considering the number of people in the store who were running around, panicked to find exactly what they needed for upcoming Halloween parties (me included), I give them major points for this. Caufields is a local Halloween tradition. If you're in need of a costume, Caufields is a good place to look. Plus you can venture in their back room to find all sorts of scary accoutrements to adorn one's yard or home with. Want a hand that pops out of box? A coffin that opens by itself? A faux graveyard gate? You'll find it here. Caufields also has a wide selection of wigs and makeup. If you want a prepacked costume similar to what you find at Halloween superstores, this is the place to go -- and at least you'll be spending that money at a local shop. Where Caufields may be a bit lacking, though, is in its accessories. I was hoping for some space-themed blasters and other props to go with my ensemble but came away empty handed. I've visited at times that aren't peak Halloween time too and have been similarly let down. Horner Novelty in Jeffersonville may beat them in this regard. Also Horner's prices seem a little cheaper. It also has more party supplies than Caufields. But Caufields is a Louisville institution. It's on this side of the river (if you're in Louisville). And like I said, it has a large supply of packaged costumes, wigs, makeup and decorations. And its staff is friendly and helpful. I do like Caufieds enough to give a four star. They have a lot of things to choose from. I mean, everyone can find something here for Halloween or even when it's not Halloween time. They could organize things a bit better. While in there, my baby spit up all over my husband so we had an adventure looking for the restroom. We asked one staff person, instead of showing us, she just said where it was-which was not accurate. Maybe she was new. At any rate, we walked through the entire store at least twice before we found another staff and he actually was kind enough to show my husband where it was. While he was in the restroom my 7 year old, myself, and my 7 month old decided to venture into the very back where they have house/outdoor decor and kind of a "haunted room" type feel. Which, my son always says he loves to be scared and jump scared. Well, he go one big ole scare when the coffin popped open and a dummy came flying out and then a big spider my his left leg came at him. I won't lie, I laughed a little too hard. This is a great novelty, magic, and costume store all year long. Though many will agree, when the spook-bug bites, and you are in the mood for Halloween, this place is a must. Based on square footage, I don't believe this is the largest novelty store in town. With that said, I still feel the amount of merchandise inside is packed in and so heavily concentrated that the variety and selection outweighs the competition. There are several rooms pinned together in the old warehouse of a building. Each room tends to specialize in one area such as props, costumes, novelty lights, magician supplies, masks, etc.; though, some merchandise categories bleeds into other rooms. A visit to Caufield's is always entertaining, especially during the Halloween season. My dad used to take me to Caufield's on Saturday's sometimes when I was a kid to buy new magic tricks. Back then they kept them behind a glass counter and there was a guy who would demonstrate different tricks for you and teach you how to do the ones you decided to buy. I'm not sure if that's still the policy today but walking into Caufield's was like a blast from the past for me. Everything looked pretty much the same as it did back in the late 80's which was awesome. I was greeted and offered help as soon as I walked in which I appreciated since I was in a bit of a hurry. The nice woman showed me where I could find everything they had that would work for an 80's themed Christmas party I was attending that night. The selection for the 80's wasn't huge (not that I can think of anything else they should have had) but I did manage to find a few things to complete my look. I will say though they had a ton of 50's, 60's and 70's stuff so if you need anything like that this is your place! The prices seemed to be reasonable to me which was nice since I didn't exactly have time to shop around. I didn't get to look around the entire store since I was in a hurry but from what I could see they still have just about every costume you could think of and any type of party decor you could possibly want. You love Halloween, right? What other holiday has evolved from Paganism into a secular celebration of humor and escape from reality? A personal expression of one's inherent tendencies through the canvas of costumery? Heading to Caufield's in the week or so before this wonderful holiday quickly became a ritualistic pilgrimage in my childhood. Although I moved away years ago, I love to visit Louisville in October and often partake in a visit to the best costume/novelty shop in Louisville. It is fun to see the place packed with adults preparing for parties and kids perusing all of the fun masks and make-up. It is like a museum of human whimsicality. Excitement is in the air and the animatronic killers popping out of their diorama are surprising evidence that humans still expend lots of energy on frivolous fun. I think that is a good thing. I love going in here whether I'm shopping or browsing. The last room in the back is always decked out in Halloween Decor and never changes. Me and Scott stopped by a few days before Halloween to get a couple of last minute items. I had never been here before and it's so easy to get caught up looking at one area of the store before you move on to the next room or area. Since I've only been once and it was during their peak season I am sure a lot changes depending on the season and what party supplies are needed for each holiday. That being said, I was super impressed with how well the store was laid out and how much stuff they have. I have grown up across the bridge in Indiana so when it comes to novelty shops I am use to Horner Novelty and Caufield's took the cake away from them. The staff was very knowledgeable and helped me a couple questions I had about the makeup for what I was doing, which prevented me from spending a couple extra dollars. There were obviously tons of Halloween costumes and accessories like witch hats, Dorothy shoe covers (which I bought, because I was gender bending the wicked witch, not knowing that they were for children's feet not grown man feet), tons of "meh" make up, they also have brands like Ben Nye which is really good, and tons upon tons of other costume stuff. Seeing that I like to dress up in drag occasionally their selection of heels is wonderful! They even have sizes that fit my feet! The final bit that I got to look at was their dungeon room, which has more Halloween decorations than I knew existed and a lot of it is really high tech. They had a little hand that reaches out from underneath a trap door, a guy who pops out of a coffin (that about made me jump outta my skin), a little old lady in a rocking chair saying phrases that escape me now, bodies that moved and so much more. It was super cool and I got the rest of what I needed for my costume here. It's a fantastic place and I want to visit again during off season to see what other goodies I can find! read more

I came to Kentucky meet my partners family for my birthday a few years ago. Having never been to Kentucky and having lived in big cities (NY,LA, Denver) I was worried my birthday would be a little less exciting than normal! My one request was to go to go somewhere fun, and quirky. So obviously Caufield's made it to the top of the list! My partner and I are both horror movie fanatics and collect masks, and we had sooo much fun looking around! The mask collection is incredible we ended up leaving with three. We spent about an hour and a half just gawking at all the fun costumes props, and masks. Also I got an awesome captain Spaulding pin right before the tragic passing of Sid. (RIP). Overall 10/10. On top of that we just moved here a few weeks ago, and got invited a costume party for his brothers birthday. We both had costumes but his sister needed something in a pinch, we brought her here and she also had a great experience! read more

I was sent the completely wrong item. I was looking for a specific item- a wooden appearing bo staff used by Donatello of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. It was specifically what my son's best friend wanted for his 7 yr old birthday. I found it on this site and was so excited. I spent extra money to have it delivered in 2 days. While it arrived on time, it was not at all the item I ordered. Instead of brown and tan one long piece, it was purple and black, in three pieces, with scratch marks all down the center. And it irritates me that out of ALL of those costumes, the ones you find online that you like, they don't have in the store.. Costumes, Ghosts, Wigs, Rentals and More! Caufield's is one of the oldest and most versatile store in Louisville. Let's face it the costume selection for sizes and ages is great, but let's talk about the aspects that most do not know about this costume store. First this store sells stage makeup, that may not sound to impressive, but for us theater folk they carry name brands, prosthesis's, spirit gum remover, and even make up application how to kits. Second, if you are throwing a party and want to make it club style, Caufield's has disco balls, sound sensitive lasers, and strobe lights for purchase or rental. Third, you can try on just about anything! If you are not sure that size small Laura Croft costume fits just ask the great staff at Caufields and they will let you try it on. Please note there are no returns or exchanges at Caufields, but with a website and reassuring staff you will not need to return a thing. The price is very comparable, if not cheaper then your more generic one trick pony Halloween Express store. read more
