Since there was nothing listed for "Criminal", I listed 1 Star. C&D Auto Care should change their name to "C&D Auto Sabotage". I have a special background and know cars very well especially my own.The last incident was when they released an UN-SAFE" vehicle to a driver. I am very cautious about who works on my car as it affects me or my Families Safety. Over a period of about the last 2 years until it came to a head, I have had serious work done to my car and mistakes were made which later caused more problems up to and including SMOG tests. (Unauthorized work was done without permission, etc...) Various parts were NOT "Secured" properly, special liquids were not topped off and wiring was "tampered" with, etc.... On several occasions I had to do post inspections to make sure of what was done or touched or left undone. Tools were left behind, connectors Missing, and a hood strut left disconnected. The previous one was bent and damaged by Dar.(Typical of "Criminal mechanics") I had to get it replaced at a local salvage yard. On another occasion I paid for a set of Injectors at $108 and Dar wanted to charge like $150 for just one. Either way, I still got the whole set installed and it runs fine. The whole idea of a "criminal Mechanic" is to get you to Trust HIM and then he controls you, your decisions and your pocket book. An Exhaust Pipe was not connected properly to the Engine and caused a crack which had to be welded at my cost later for a SMOG test. (Russel or Dar) After ALL the work was done, there were way too many mistakes that could NOT be over looked. When I spotted the mistakes, the attitudes started to change. They figured out I was NOT going to be an "Easy Mark"(Typical of "Criminal mechanics") The last straw was criminal when a simple fuel pump connector was not fixed and my car stalled in traffic which caused me to be at risk or getting hit by other cars in traffic. I finally had to get towed to a "Qualified" mechanic who fixed the connector iin less than 1 hour with a Factory part less than $10.00 to the Fuel Pump which Dar claimed he could not fix.(Typical of "Criminal mechanics") (After having the vehicle for 5-6 days.) One of the so called "mechanics" named Russel called me several times in hopes of hurrying me over to pick up the vehicle when it was NOT fixed and tools were left behind. Dar was really pissed off cause I caught him at it and he had to fix something and recover one of his own tools.(Why is that Dar) Dar C&D makes promises and then tries to UP the Price after quoting a lower price. The Rude behavior and arrogance of these criminal mechanics becomes more obvious when you catch them at a serious mistake and there are no apologies. (Typical of "Criminal mechanics") I am a very nice person and highly educated and trained, but I will NOT be taken advantage of. No hard feelings, until it became Criminal and a safety issue.(Then the State BAR gets notified) An Investigator wrote Dar up for NOT Providing documentation to a car repair he failed to do or finish and he failed the AAA standards as well because it makes them look bad too. Bobby gets an Honorable mention and I think he is in with the Wrong Crowd. Someone needs to be aware that keeping 2 sets of records and prices is illegal and there are requirements by the California BAR or Bureau of Automotive Repair. I was not called when it was promised and they failed to communicate with me as they were not doing anything with my car except letting it sit in their parking lot unattended for weeks. My car was never the same after going to C&D Auto repair, but changed for the better after I started going to another Trusted and qualified Mechanic a few miles away.The other mechanic has always communicated and never hesitated to tell me the truth so I could make an educated decision on my car and expenses. Dar was everything but that. Dar LIED and kept the truth out of the discussion so HE could control your car and not you! This is not the end of C&D Auto Repair as the there are other agencies looking at the whole car shop now. As I said, the Bureau of Automotive Repair issued a Violation against C&D and it is NOT their first Rodeo either. Triple AAA will also have to consider dropping them from the referral ranks as they do not want their Membership getting ripped off by Criminals like Dar is. read more

the service was great, they kept me up to date with everything. my only issue is that they said I need a brake fluid flush so I approved it. I check my cars fluids about a week later just to do it and the brake fluid was about an inch higher than the MAX FILL line. im a bit upset over that so minus one star. read more

Dara and his son Bobby are amazing. They have worked on my car and my son's car for years and are so honest. On my very first visit, I brought a quote from another repair shop who insisted I HAD to have everything on their quote fixed immediately or my car was going to die any minute. Dara went through line by line and explained what I needed fixed immediately and what could wait (with specific timeframes of when it would be necessary to repair). I was absolutely hooked due to his honesty. My most recent visit was due to a check engine light coming on. Not only did they research the codes, but they informed me that they contacted the manufacturer and found that it was under warranty and that the manufacturer could fix it for free! Just bring your car here. Simple as that. I've brought a Chevy, Honda and a Lexus in here many times over the years. Every time they fixed me up within a reasonable time and price. Most recently I had a pretty big overhaul completed in my 02 Lexus. They were spot on the money with their assessment and spotted a few more items that needed fixing.... This wasn't a ploy, this was just standard stuff to get my car back up to a much better condition. Proof? Firestone by my house did the same assessment and found many of the same problems.... They didn't find the engine mounts though... C&D did. An easy miss but man, an easy find too. C&D does a far more comprehensive review. They'll even tell you what you can get away with for a few months without fixing now. All in all, I paid nearly 4K for my car to be fixed. Firestone estimate after missing some important things, 6K. Found this place as recommendation from my gf. They have been going to Dara for a while and told me he takes pretty good care of people and does a fair job on price too. I met him when Midas screwed up my trunk when I had headlights installed. I drove from my place to Dara's and he personally came and fixed my trunk (Midas didn't put the liner back in and said it was like that when they started to work). Anyway, my lights burned out (or so I thought) and I took it back to Dara's. Bobby was very helpful the whole way through and gave me a good price for the lights ($4/bulb which came to $9.73) I was more than happy with this and returned home until it was done. Well, I got a call from Bobby saying that they needed to do a deeper check and told me it would be about $75 to check it out. Turns out it was the brake light switch that was busted and they had to fix that. I was worried it was gonna come out to a pretty steep price but, only came to about $151 which isn't too bad nowadays REGARDLESS of what you have done. I went to pay him and heard a woman in line mention she was a AAA member. I am one too and showed him my card. It took 10% off my total so, I ended up paying only $130. They apply the discount if it's over a certain $$$ amount but, that's fine with me...any place that offers discounts is a win in my book =) Overall, I am very happy with the service. Dara is in there working right along with the other guys and Bobby is very professional on the phone. I even saw Dara's younger son (I assume it was) helping work on my car. So, he's also showing his kids the business which I think was pretty cool parenting. 10-10 and will be using them again in the future. read more

C & D is the best. They take care of you and put your mind at ease. There's no one else we trust to get the job done.....RIGHT. Their prices are always fair. Chances are high you can get repairs done cheaper elsewhere, but you get what you pay for. We tried going elsewhere to save $1k on a major repair before and learned our lesson quickly. The money saved going elsewhere was spent later at C & D, when they had to fix the issues caused by crappy repair work at the other shop. Some people may consider themselves "ripped off" because it's not the cheapest service around; but to us, safety and peace of mind are easily worth it. Best of all, they communicate in a timely manner - we've never had to call and remind them of anything - and they don't forget to call back. That's why we drive all the way from Clairemont to La Mesa for any repairs - it's worth the trip. They also have wifi for your internet needs at their location - great if you are waiting around. Don't take the risk by going elsewhere - you'll probably end up regretting it! Dara always explains to you what the problem is and the solution, in the greatest of detail. I don't care much for cars as I do computers, but I'm glad they don't treat me different as compared to my hubster. Dara may look intimidating with all his super car knowledge..but he and his crew are teddy bears! I needed a new set of tires and happen to live nearby. I got a reasonable quote over the phone. A Yelp deal sweetened the pot. So I took my car in. I asked the owner Dara to look at the brakes while the tires were off, and told him they were likely in poor shape, as I had been told some time ago by another shop that I would need new rotors soon. When the car was ready Dara phoned me and told me the brakes were fine. Apparently he had also checked my engine (check engine light had been on for a while) even though C&D doesn't officially service Volvos, and gave me the corresponding code diagnosis. And he found a leak in the fuel pressure regulator, which of course he offered to fix. Since it was expensive I decided not to have it repaired that day, and to take the vehicle to my regular mechanic for a second opinion. I also had a chance to interact with Dara's son Bobby. I was impressed by the professionalism and service both of these gentlemen exhibited. They were not pushy and didn't try to take advantage of my when they could have. Along with the timely repairs and fair prices, all of this adds up to a five star review for me. Recommended. read more

I had C & D install a new radiator in my Toyota Camray July 2011. It started leaking October 2012. The warranty was 12,000 miles or 12 months. I had only driven 5,000 miles. But the time was 15 months. Dara the owner arranged with the radiator distributor to replace it no charge anyway. And C&D installed the replacement at no charge. C & D installed a catalytic converter protector on my Prius for a very good price. I go to them for all car matters.

Had a 8am appt, they started working on my car right away. Went in for a AAA Road Trip Ready Service Package, which included an oil change. Also asked them to check my brakes, they seemed to be wearing. After a long test drive to check them for any problems, the brakes turned out to be fine. As I was leaving remembered that my passenger side window was rattling (had a piece of cardboard stuck in it to stop the rattle), they took the cardboard out and took my car on test drive but couldn't get it to rattle...evidently the cardboard had fixed the problem (or put it back on track?!). Dara is by far the most honest mechanic I have ever done business with. He has flawlessly maintained and repaired four of my vehicles for over ten years and I have never once had cause for complaint. When my vehicle doesn't require a certain repair even though other shops have suggested it he won't do it, and will explain why it is not necessary at that time. Also, there have been numerous instances he has waived labor charges and drastically reduced part prices to help my family budget for much needed repairs. Took my 71 mustang in for an alignment, They spent two hours trying to align it but due to the lift in the back it was gonna require custom shim work to get it straight. They called me and informed me I should take her to east county alignment, they are specialists in aligning Cars with my particular problem. Even after spending two hours working on it, they told me there would be no charge! Finally a shop with integrity & honesty, Although they were able to do it, it would require many hours to get it right. They wanted to save me some money by sending it to the local specialist that all they do is this kind of custom alignment! I think I've found my shop for future repairs. :) read more

I brought my wife's car here for their free brake inspection. After the inspection the guy behind the desk started explaining what they found. The way it broke down is that apparently the rotors, pads, drums and shoes all needed to be replaced. As he explained it, it was basically unsafe to be driving the vehicle without allowing them to make the repairs. Upon hearing this I was rather concerned for my wife, I took the receipt and headed home where I actually read the receipt which had all the notes on it. None of these notes stated anything close to what the guy at the desk said. I don't know what he was trying to pull but I didn't appreciate the dishonesty. read more

Interesting to see the mixed reviews about this place. From my rating it is obvious my experience with the place was not a very good one. I had recently replaced a rear wheel bearing on my Ford Explorer and decided to visit family in San Diego over the weekend. When I got to San Diego I noticed that the same bearing was making noise. Fearful that I may not have torqued the axle nut enough and therefore caused early failure of the bearing I decided to jack the car up in my mother's front driveway to check the looseness of the wheel. Sure enough there was plenty of play on the driver side wheel. Since I was checking the driver side I decided to jack up the passenger side to check for play. It was rock solid. So I gave C & D a call to see how much it'd cost to replace the bearing. I was quoted ~$300 which was about what I expected. I drove the vehicle in about an hour later and handed over the keys and went to the mall in our other vehicle to eat lunch. About an hour later I received a call stating that they believed both bearings would need to be replaced and that the passenger side also had significant play. I thought it was odd considering I had checked for play just hours earlier. I told them to move on with work on the driver side and I'd be in shortly to check the play on the passenger side. About 5 minutes later I get a call back from Dara saying he could not in good conscience replace just the driver side bearing with the passenger side also bad. I told him I would come in to take a look at what he was talking about. I get to the shop and sure enough there was significant play in the passenger side wheel. Again, I was scratching my head as hours earlier it was extremely tight. Either way, at lunch I decided to look up prices for an entire hub and bearing assembly, instead of just the bearing and retainer that they quoted me $94 for. I was in luck, as NAPA, which supplies their parts, had an entire hub assembly, bearing and all for $107. I asked them if they could match the price, or if I could just buy it and have them install it. I was surprised that he couldn't match the price and wouldn't even entertain the thought. (I will say that Bobby seemed like he felt bad that Dara wouldn't match the price.) What was more surprising is that they quoted me $94 for a bearing and retainer when the same exact parts were available off the shelf at NAPA for ~$35. 250% markup is pretty steep if you ask me. Anyway, I told them to take my car off the lift and that I'd have to do the work myself or take it to another place. I decided to take it to another shop down the road that my brother had recommended. There will be a separate review for that shop. Talking to the proprietor of the shop, I explained to him the work that had recently been done and that it may have been my fault for not being sure the nut was torqued to spec. I also told him of the diagnosis from C & D that my other bearing was also bad. I also told him that NAPA had complete hub assemblies available for $107/each side. He made calls and agreed to honor the NAPA price. Total work for both sides with parts ~$640. He told me that he'd have the car ready the next day by 1 PM. I gave him the keys and went to the house. Two hours later I receive a call saying the car was done. That was fast. I go to the other garage and see that BOTH brand new hub assemblies are still sitting on a table in the shop. Apparently neither bearing needed replacement. The driver side axle nut was a little loose as I suspected and just needed tightening. That was a relief. What was interesting though was that when the passenger wheel was removed the axle nut fell to the floor. The mechanic suggested that it was recently removed from the axle. He merely had to put the nut onto the spindle and tighten it down. Total cost for everything $65! You can draw your own conclusions as to why the axle nut was loose when hours earlier that bearing felt rock solid and hadn't made a sound (that nut had been tight since the car left the factory floor). I have drawn my own conclusions and will never consider taking a car to C & D and in fact will steer everybody I know away from the place. If they did loosen that axle nut and sent my family and I on the road knowing that that wheel could fall off the vehicle at any given time then they have no conscience and could have caused injury or worse. read more

I recently had my car stall while driving down the freeway. I am pretty handy with cars but unfortunately since moving to San Diego from L.A. I don't have the space or tools anymore to work on my car very efficiently. My father had taken his car here before and said they took really good care of him so I decided to give them a shot. After "diagnosing" my car they said that my distributor rotor screw had came out and the rotor was not making proper contact in the cap. They recommended a new cap, rotor, plugs, and wires for a total cost of around $400. Luckily I know enough about cars to know that they were insane to quote me that. Parts for that job on my particular car should be no more than $100 with at most 1 hour of labor for a grand total of no more then $180-$200. They also "recommended that I replace the valve cover gasket since they had removed it during the "diagnosis" for a cost of $190+. I have replaced a few gaskets in my day and the valve cover is probably the easiest ever. $30 part and 30-45 minute job for a grand total of around $100. The other "recommendations" were new radiator hoses for $250+, a new radiator for $415, and "minor electrical tune" for $458. They are absolutely insane!!! There was no way I was going to pay those prices. I told them I could not afford any of the work and asked if they could just put everything back together so I could drive it home. Now this is where I get extremely upset. They put my valve cover back on with the spark plug gasket on upside down, a 1"+ piece of the valve cover gasket completely gone, and 80% of the screws not even fully finger tight let alone torqued properly. They basically were like well if he doesn't want to pay let's screw him good. Like I said before, luckily I know enough about cars to be able to do stuff myself. I replaced the cap and rotor for a total of $30 and 20 minutes worth of work. The wires were fine for at least another 6 months. Since they destroyed my gasket, and did not tell me, I replaced that as well for a total of $35 and an hour and a half of work. Which only took that long since I had to spend most of my time removing the giant amount of oil that filled my third spark plug cylinder plus cleaning the new spark plug and the wire of massive amounts of oil. Bottom line is I will NEVER take my car there again! I will never let anyone I know take their car there. I am contacting my bank to get my money back, I am reporting them to BAR (Bureau of Automotive Repair), and I may even take them to small claims court. They tried to mess with the wrong guy this time. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE!!! read more

It's funny to see people say that this place is so honest. How do they know that? How do they know they didn't get ripped off? Anyway.... I took my car in to get it looked because I was losing a lot of oil. I already knew I needed a rebuild, but I took it there to get a second opinion and estimate. I left my car there and they called later and told me they couldn't figure out where all the oil was going. They said they couldn't get it to smoke out of the exhaust like I reported. They said they drove it around and had someone follow them - no smoke. They also said there was no oily residue in the tailpiple - my tailpipe was black and thick with residue. They pulled 3 of the spark plugs and found nothing. The back three plugs required a lot of work to get to, so they wouldn't pull them unless I authorized more work. That's fine, but they wanted to boroscope the engine for over $250. What about a compression test? I didn't want to spend the money just to diagnose the problem, when I already knew the piston rings were bad, so I just picked my car. The thing that got me upset was that my odometer was completely unchanged. It is impossible that they drove the car around like they said. Big red flag. I wound up taking my car to Pacific Beach where I have been taking my cars for the past 20 years. They saw the smike immediately and they found oil in one of the spark plug wells that C & D supposedly checked. C & D was not trustworthy at all in my opinion. I live close to C&D and have been going there for many years, however lately, the place is not as good as they used to be. Past experiences tire rotation ordered, paid for but I believe never happened based on brake dust and scratches on rims that were in the same place on the vehicle. Same car I was told needed brakes it been 2 years and has been to another shop brakes are still ok? Another vehicle I own starting making a tapping noise in the engine. They told me that I had a 'rod knock' and would need to replace the engine, plus needed new brakes and new shocks(one was leaking?). I was ready to sell the car cheap because of this news. Later decided to take the car to the dealer to get a second opinion; they tell me the belts were literally tearing apart and they had to replace them and the tapping noise disappeared. Plus, I had some power steering lines that were leaking or had holes in them. The dealer never said anything about brakes or shocks? How does an auto repair place miss something as basic as belts? I am truly sorry but, I have lost all confidence in C&D auto care. read more

Once again Bobby and crew saved the day. My car stopped running while on the freeway. I was able to have a tow truck take it to C&D while I got back to work. I had brought my car in due to a bearing problem on one of my wheels, which I knew was a bad issue and probably needed replacing, and also for a routine oil change. They said that it was in fact the bearings that had went, and that the amount of rust on the wheel mount would make it a more difficult procedure. I understood because it definitely was really rusted and they even took pictures to show me. All of this I appreciated. Once they went to remove the mount and replace the bearing, they had damaged the speed sensor, and told me that I needed it to be replaced, offering me their factory price for it. This was a little annoying, since it added an extra $200 to the total and another day in the shop while they waited for the part to come in. I asked if they could do a check for the other wheels just to make sure everything else was set, since it would be in the shop for longer. When I returned, they told me that the front right tire (different from the one they worked on) was now making a scraping noise and had me drive around the block with them to hear it. It hadn't before the trip to the shop so I was skeptical. Once I returned home, I checked the wheel myself to find only 4 of the 5 wheel nuts were on my tire, and all of them weren't even finger tight (which is really dangerous while driving). I brought it to just a local pepboys and replaced the missing nut for 2 dollars, tightened the rest of them and the noise went away. I also had to bring it somewhere else since they didn't even perform the oil change. If they had removed the tire like they said they did, then that must've meant that they did not tighten the nuts enough on the wheel to the point where one of them came off on my way home. Overall, the work that they actually do seems good, but the added damage to other parts really brought down the experience. I will be bringing it to another place next time. read more

I havent actually had any auto work here done, but these guys were super friendly when I came in with my scooter. Last night on my way home, some dude pulls up next to me and tells me my scooter tire is flat and I should pull over. Well, I'm not an idiot, so I drove the rest of the way home and took a look. My tire looked fine as far as I was concerned, but first thing in the morning, I took it C&D and had them check the tire pressure. They don't normally service scooters, but they were gracious enough to check the pressure. Turns out, my front tire was running just a little low. They filled her up and I was ready to roll. read more

I've been coming to C&D for many years and six cars. I think the most helpful thing that I can tell you about them is that they will recommend service based on the age of your car and your personal needs. When my CRV had 200k miles, he would tell me if a certain service would still be worth it based on how well the rest of the car was working. Took in my vehicle to get a Smog check and for a brake check since my brakes were grinding. The service came out to be a bit pricey, but that was negligence on my part, since they had to replace both the pads and rotars. It seemed to be fair priced for the work and parts. The staff here was very helpful and friendly. They gave me detailed explanations on what was wrong with my vehicle and then actually showed me what was wrong. When I came here the first time I had complained about my brakes feeling loose like I had to press my foot down on the brake... After having in the shop when I got it back it was the same! HOWEVER, when I called back to let them know about this issue (They had replaced the master cylinder at the time) they attended me so well and asked me to bring it in and informed me that the master cylinder had a 1 year warranty (paid about $500 for my Hyundai) and so there could be something wrong. So of course I brought it in and the MC was faulty and I got my car working great free of cost the 2nd time around! THANK YOU C&D !
