I was surprised and pleased to find a very nice, obviously very well funded library. And I think there were at least six employees there. The one I asked about a reading area was cheerful and helpful. If anything, it's maybe even a bit better than the King County Library System I enjoy at home, and KCLS is widely recognized as world class. I had a very enjoyable, productive time there. If I could go there often, I would.

The library is clean, quiet, and you don't have to plug your nose while browsing for books like you do at the downtown library (homeless people, God Bless Em, sleep and hang out there and the library smells very foul and I have seen two very physical fights on two different occasions with homeless people while I had my small children with me......we don't go there anymore - doesn't feel safe) I am sorry people are homeless, but it sucks that we can't even enjoy the library. Anyway, I digress.......Tumwater library has easy access, great parking, and the staff are all super attentive and very friendly and want to help you. I love this library!

The LOTT Clean Water Alliance has a little learning museum near the waterfront in old town Olympia…read more It has a very "field trip" vibe, teaching kids (and adults!) about how water in the region is processed. There are lots of interactive exhibits where visitors can learn about how our wastewater is cleaned and how Budd Inlet is kept from becoming a body of water that will turn swimmers into psychotic clowns who give Batman the business. When we went, they were hosting art projects in honor of Grandparents' Day. My patience with my two kids doing crafts is something for another conversation, but the kids enjoyed it. The museum has a smallish parking lot that is free, so that's a plus. Across the street, in front of the children's science museum, is an artificial creek where kids can splash around and cool off on a hot day. It's mad slippery, so don't let those littles run! The best part is that it's all free! And they have resources to help you knock that infuriatingly high Lacey water bill down a few bucks. All in all, a good place for kids to learn about water treatment, have some fun splashing around, parents to shave a few bucks off their water bill, and in general kill a few hours. They lose one star because it wasn't the most stimulating place for adults. A bit...snoozy. I mean, it's for kids, so that's okay, but I was struggling a bit with maintaining interest, sort of like when my kids tell me about Roblox games. Except that instead of Roblox shenanigans, it was an hour about utilities. I'm falling asleep a bit now just trying to write this review. BUT...the kids LOVED it and learned a lot.

It might be better for older, science oriented kids, but adults will likely find it interesting as well. It's free and all they ask you do is provide some info about how many people are in your party and the zip code you are visiting from. It's a good rainy day activity and can provide some educational moments. There is an interactive scavenger hunt which involves doing 8 tasks and ends with the ability to choose a prize. The maze pen we won is pretty cool. My 10 year old nephew was easily able to complete all the tasks and seemed to enjoy doing it. Some things were like video games, which he seemed to like and maybe it will give him some ideas about career possibilities for the future. It was a good learning opportunity about the importance of saving water and learning about what happens to all the water we waste, etc. I wish I lived in Olympia and was able to trace where the water goes when I flush the toilet. It was nice that they ask you to share what you learn when you go to redeem your prize. I'm not sure if my 8 year old niece would have found it as interesting, but there are places to sit and some kitchen toys to play with if not. It looks like they also have some crafts available. Check it out if you are in the area.
