First, I'm very surprised at all the negative reviews considering my experience. I was looking specifically for a Hearthstone wood burning stove so I came in and browsed all of their floor models and talked to two different reps where inviting and professional. We landed on the perfect model and scheduled an installation. Lauren was great in communicating delivery times and ensuring that I had enough time to finish building my custom hearth pad. What stands out as exceptional to me is the installation team, they were thorough and complete perfectionists. I had built my own slate hearth pad in a corner and the installation team found a way to get the stove and pipe EXACTLY positioned dead-center on the pad, with a flue arrangement that had a small angled segment to get the ceiling penetration equidistant from both walls and perfectly square. The feet of the stove were also positioned in perfect alignment with the slates on the pad. Exceptional work. It looks like the house was designed around the wood stove. These days I'm usually disappointed in the quality of work that I don't do myself, so to see such thorough attention to detail was incredibly refreshing. My family recently purchased a home that was in the middle of a remodel. The contractor who had been hired and paid to finish the remodel took the money but left without completing the work. The original owners ended up selling the home out of frustration with a dishonest businessman and an incomplete project. I only mention this because it I believe it is relevant to my review of Northwest Hearth and Home, as it put us in the category of "unique circumstance" as far as customers go. So, when we took possession of the home, there were a number of jobs that had been paid for but not completed. Among those incomplete tasks, there were two gas fireplaces had been purchased from NW Hearth and Home, but they had never been installed. This could have turned out to be yet another ugly situation as we had not been the original customers who made the purchase. We honestly didn't even know how long ago the units had been purchased, or if the company would be obligated to install them for new owners. But, when we called them to inquire about an appointment for installation, they were friendly and helpful. They put us on right the schedule. Then, on the agreed upon day, a team of two, nice, knowledgeable, friendly, young men showed up, right on time. They installed the units and even cleaned up after themselves. Then they gave a brief tutorial so that we to be able to use them properly. Overall, our experience was everything we could have hoped for and honestly (considering the circumstances) far better than we would have guessed. Buyer Beware! I needed to buy a new woodstove and initially thought I was going to buy it here. After paying the deposit, I decided Northwest Hearth & Home was not the store for me. I called an canceled my order within 48 hours of making my deposit. 99% off all retailers would give someone like me their money back BUT not these guys. For ALL canceled orders, Northwest Hearth & Home charges customers a 10% cancelation/restocking fee. If you don't pay the cancelation/restocking fee, they send you to collections. With my order, they didn't even have the woodstove in stock! Did I put a stop pay on my deposit check, yes sir. I did this because I knew this place was shady and their actions prove it. I suggest folks view woodstoves here because they have a variety of products to look at, BUT do not buy here. Rich's in Tacoma carries most the stuff these guys do, or Sunset Air and even Oly fireplace. I've bought a Lopi stove and a Vermont Casting stove in the past 6 months, these guys have missed out on a lot of business by being extremely unfriendly. My wife and I were in immediate need of a gas fireplace insert to replace an ancient wood-burning insert in a home we just purchased. We are new to the Olympia community so we don't yet have a "trusted contractor" network. We visited all three fireplace stores in the Olympia area. Based on our conversations with each, we selected Northwest Hearth & Home. We were very pleased with the experience all the way from selection through installation. Lauren was our primary contact. She very expertly and knowledgeably showed us our options and tradeoffs (without any high-pressure pitches) and guided us through the process. Dave came out to the house for a site visit and gave us advice re: heat output capacity we would need and took various measurements. Based on the site visit, they wrote up an estimate that turned out to be spot-on for the final invoice. Chris and Andrew did the actual installation. They were knowledgeable, skilled, and meticulous and did an excellent job with the removal of the old (and very large and heavy) wood burning insert and the installation of the new KozyHeat gas insert. After shopping for a gas fireplace in several stores we settled on this one because the salesperson was extra helpful and knowledgeable but it was all downhill from there. The installer is the owner of the business and he needs to learn how to install gas fireplaces in a legal, up to code manner. He also needs to learn to respect his customers, to put it mildly. I've never had such a poor experience with any business in my life-and I'm 53 so I've had a few. After bringing the gas unit into the house he told me it was not going to fit into the existing fireplace and he would have to charge extra for removing some brick to make it fit. I took a look and told him I thought it would go in to which he replied "Then you do it". I suggested he try it again and, sure enough, it went in without a problem. Now, two years later, I've come to find out the flexible gas line he ran from the exterior is not allowed by code and it should have been black iron pipe. Needless to say, he saved time with this dangerous shortcut and put my family and neighbors at risk. He had told me all the work they do is done right and up to code. The chimney cap he put on was a flat piece of sheet metal with the vent pipe through it and it was simply caulked onto the top of the flue. The other flue (there were two) was simply left open allowing rain to fall into the firebox where the gas fireplace was installed. I could go on but what's the point-the owner's work speaks for itself and his attitude added insult to injury. Don't be duped by this business like I was!!! read more

First let me talk about their customer service. I went in and found just exactly the stove I needed. The clerk was nice and knowledgeable, I ordered the stove and waited for it to come in. Then my Mom died. When they sent an email asking me when the installers could come out I left a voice message saying I needed to cancel. The manager called back. We had a major disagreement on our hands and this could have gone very badly however he remained polite but insistent as did I. He said he couldn't refund special orders, I mentioned small claims court, he told me the contract would stand up in court. It's remarkable that this conversation was so civilized. I asked if someone else came in and bought the stove if he would refund my money minus a 20% fee. He said yes, if someone bought it he would. Now this is remarkable. He was being businesslike and fair. Today they sent an email, they had convinced the supplier to take back the special order minus a bigger fee, but considering we are talking about almost a $3000 stove he was reasonable. My experience was nothing like the bad reviews here. They are decent and polite. Next the stove- they carry a range of stoves including top of the line. I did my research before I came in and found what I wanted. Let me add I gave bought 2 wood stoves in Olympia. The other businesses were horrible including installing the stove with 2 baffles, one upside down so it would fit( yes really). I came into this store with my young daughter and my friend, with the intention of making a large purchase. Unfortunately, in an extremely rude fashion, to leave the store because the shopkeeper claimed he couldn't have my daughter "running around" with the hazardous items in the showroom. First of all, my daughter was not running around or being unruly in any way. It would be hard for her to do considering I was holding her hand. Secondly, there is NO indication that children are unwelcome in the store. If he'd made me aware of this upon arriving, I would have understood. My daughter was behaving just fine. I am fairly strict with my children and my daughter did absolutely nothing wrong in any way. She was not touching the items or running, or being unruly. I am of the opinion that the shopkeeper assumed we were not going to make a purchase, since we were quietly discussing prices and comparisons. I am appalled at the unbelievably rude way we were treated. We will never set foot in this place again and will not recommend them to our friends. On a side note, the fireplace accessories were shamelessly overpriced. We were ready to pay upwards of 300+ dollars for our accessories. We found nearly identical accessories at Target for 60 dollars. So not only is NW Hearth and Home rude to their customers, they are also ripping people off. EDIT: I am responding to your comment to my review. Not only does your store have horrible customer service, your comment is full of blatant and outright lies. My daughter did no such thing. My daughter certainly did NOT climb on the stoves. And she she SAT down in front of the main counter, NOT near anything dangerous. There were no other visible customers in the store at the time. This man comes to our private gated community, drives double the speed limit, and when confronted by our security guard .... yells, swears, and tells her he doesn't have time for this, as he makes $150/hr. , and she's costing him money. I saw him speed and heard the exchange. No matter how good his product may/or may not be, he would never get my business. And, I would like to know why the other reviews of this business are not posted, but put in the category of less important reviews ..... when more than 50% of them are 1* reviews. The company and management are obviously unstable at least. Furthermore ........... here are the first reviews I came across that were not recommended reviews. I know not why? Abhorrent customer service. I went to NW Hearth & Home to make a purchase for some wood stove accessories. From the time I walked in until the time my friend and I were asked to leave I received nothing like what I would consider customer service, good or otherwise. When we were greeted and asked what we needed I informed the salesman that I was just browsing; further inquiry on his part meant I had to let him know I was looking for fireplace accessories. He pointed out a few items, waited as though I was going to say on the spot, "I'll take that one", and when I didn't, promptly walked away. My friend and I continued around the store marveling at the lovely selection, but mostly checking prices on the items I felt were of interest. As we were walking toward the back of the store, my friend's daughter began to cry a little but up until that point she was holding her mother's hand nearly the entire time being on incredibly good behavior for a 3 year old. When her daughter began to cry, the man at the front of the store informed us he that he would "have to" ask us to leave because he "couldn't have" my friend's daughter "running around" the store. At no point in the entire time we were there was she running, she didn't ever [to my eyes] leave her mother's side nor her range of vision, and the one time her daughter tried to touch something she was told not to then left it alone. I have never before been asked to leave a store and was so stunned at the reason the man claimed we needed to leave I couldn't even muster a response. He could have very easily asked her to pick her daughter up so she wouldn't be able to touch anything if it was really such a hazard, or let us know when we walked in that he wasn't comfortable with a small child being in the store. There are certain ways to conduct business and the way this store seems to conduct it is awful. One would think in an economy such as this they would strive for the best customer service possible rather than causing potential customers to leave feelings disgruntled. It's really a shame because I saw a gorgeous cooking stove in the window that would have looked beautiful in my home but now I'll have to find it elsewhere. Additionally, I grew up in the NYC metro area where many people seem to think poor manners and bad attitudes come from; I have never experienced such a disgustingly low level of customer service there. I had my gas heating stove serviced by this company today. I called a couple weeks ago to schedule the appointment. I was told it was be couple of weeks out. I was indeed called within two weeks and the appointment was scheduled on an a date within the hours of 12-4 and I was also told the morning of the appointment I would be called and the time period would be narrowed down. Wow, I hadn't heard of this before! Sure enough, I was called and was told they would be there between 12-2. They arrived at 1:30! They pulled my entire gas stove apart, cleaned and inspected it. Once here, Mark confirmed the chimney did not need a clean but the screen needed cleaning. He called Dave to inform him what he found. I assume there would be no more issues as we had decided to keep screen off & replace it after wood burning season. All seemed fine, yet I noticed my ceilings were turning black at a fast rate, and it still smelled like a campfire cookout. During a January ice storm with no electricity for 5 days, the wood stove was our heat. Jan 22nd 2012, I start a fire in the stove which sets off my smoke alarms. I look up the length of the pipes again, and notice the elbow joint was not connected any longer to the ceiling box. In fact, I could look up into the pipe. Also a 2nd place on the elbow had a gap and side view showed the pipes leaning back slightly. Since it was Sunday, I called Mark from Top Notch to see if he could take a look. He said it was best to call Dave as it perhaps was a safety issue, so I did. I took 5 photos. After a couple of days, I called owner again. Due to the ice storm, the phone lines were not working daughter said. I suggest sending photos via email, she agrees "great idea". In my email, never did I accuse or blame anyone. My focus was "are my pipes needing more support, did a screw come loose from possible expansion and cooling of pipes? Once Dave gets photos, he calls and says, it appears the pipe was dislodged from above. Perhaps using the wrong kind of sweep broom not meant for elbow pipes. He felt the responsibility may lie with the Chimney sweep Mark. However, he said, I'm not saying he did it, yet he wasn't saying he didn't. I just thought it was a fluke happening. I called Mark, left a message of what Dave thought. Mark calls me back after speaking with Dave. Dave lied to Mark and told him that we were pointing the finger of blame at Top Notch Chimney. Mark said Dave thinks your friend was responsible for dislodged pipes. I was so upset, and yes, described Dave to Mark in not a nice way.I then called Dave, asking "why lie"? I said he was unimpeccable. I reminded him that he said the responsibility may be with Top Notch not me. Using voice inflection, but never profane names, he got tired of listening and eventually hung up. Imagine, spending $7,300.00 and 5 months later, paying someone else to repair it! I prefer to shop locally but NW Hearth & Home's customer service left much to be desired. I called on Thursday to get a griddle gasket for my VC Defiant Encore. The young lady assisting me said they were out of stock and would check on the price and availability and get back to me. When I hadn't heard by Monday I called back and had to leave a message on the answering machine because they were helping others at the time. I didn't hear back so on Wednesday I called for the third time. The same young lady answered and said, "Oh yeah," when I reminded her of what I needed and then she put me on hold. After 6 minutes on hold she got back to me, after calling the factory, to tell me that the gasket kit was on back order. She did inform me though that the gasket material was available for $7.00 per foot. This is about twice the per foot price from online sources. I have been into the store twice before and they were very willing to sell me a new stove but after this experience I would question their commitment to customer service. read more

I love this store. The customer service is so nice and they always do anything they can to help out, even with prices sometimes. It's above and beyond the usual. It's beautiful inside too, large showrooms with a lot of displays and gift products. The way the store is laid out in the showrooms is beautiful too. The insert had not been serviced in many yeas and I was told they would service it and clean it for $149 plus tax. Sounded reasonable since that is just under what it cost to have a furnace serviced and athe furnace service is far more involved. However, little did I expect that all their service consisted of was taking the glass off and cleaning it, and not doing a very god job at that, and turning it on to see if the fireplace pilot and burner worked. About 15-20 minutes total time. Oh, and the service guy went up on the roof to check the flue for leaks as I mentioned I heard drops of water when it rained. Well after they left I cleaned the cobwebs of from all around the fireplace and had to clean the old dust out of the grill work . Also had to clean up the brick in front of the fireplace as it apparently caught any dust and debris they tried to pick up. And, yes I knew the fireplace worked before they came. I thought at least the would check the gas lines, maybe some sort of check for efficiency and maybe do a more thorough cleaning. In addition to the dust and dirt I will need to clean the smudges off the glass and brass trim . Called them and was told they would talk to the guys that did the service.. Said that was fine but don't send them back as I will finish the cleaning job myself. A $162 lesson (withtax) on who not to call! read more

Beware of the " Yes I can do that!" We love our fireplace but when it came to the stonework and tank installation it is shoddy work. This guy is not a stone mason and cannot do it properly. Did it too fast, didn't care what went where and I do not believe he even stood back and looked at it.. If he had it would of triggered.. "Oh the top is sloping to the middle and OH there is one white rock in with a bunch of tan and brown rocks and OH the front doors don't open because of the hearth! And Oh there are all thin stones on the left and thick stones on the right!" We have had 2 stone mason's come and they could not believe it! Also professional stone masons don't charge near what this guy did which was 53% more! So we called to have the propane company come and fill the tank ..WELL they won't fill it, it was not done with the right code which is 10' from the fireplace vent and 5' from a window and OH there is a house vent it is sitting in front of which is a no no!!! So had to have another guy come out and OH the flex pipe which he uses from the fireplace to the outside to connect with the propane tank is not suppose to be used outside, it is suppose to be hard piped per code!! This guy does not know what he is doing. BUT he does it anyways! So we spent all this $ and can't use the fireplace because no one will fill the propane tank because it is unsafely installed and not to code! But don't dare try to talk to him about it and work it out he will put a lien on your house! Do I want him back to fix this?? Absolutely not! Customer service is the worst and threats are all he does! Hopefully people read this and steer clear! It is a wonder he is still in business. It's sad it took 3 different people to clean up this mess! Hooray for other people who are honest and give a rip about what they do. It makes guys like this look soooo bad! read more
