The staff is very attentive, and the food is delicious. Some interesting details include a plaque on the side of the baby grand piano that states the great Byron Janis played here on this lovely old Steinway. On my last visit there were some problems with the heating in the dining room, it was terribly cold and they seemed unable to fix it, however it was extremely hot upstairs. I was surprised, because everything else seemed to be in proper order. There's parking in the back, so don't bother pulling up to the front of the building, enter on Lytton Ave. There's a coat check room in the front, across the registration room. There's a dress code for the dining room, and I believe it is enforced.

It's a private city club, and the place is awesome from the minute you approach the building, which is a copy of a Venitian palace and sits on an entire city block. All cut stone is found in the lobby with high carved, coffered, and frescoed ceilings, paintings, a hugh stone fireplace, and polished brass elevator tambors. If someone invites you in, make sure to look at the main lobby ceiling. It's got carved wooden seals of all of the private men's athletic clubs that existed in the US, when the club opened. The club was founded in 1908, as a large brass plaque says, and on one of them is a list of past presidents, where I recognized a person my high school was named after. Cool. The dining service involves a lot of sterling silver and several forks, and turtle soup with sherry. If you want something not on the menu, they'll make it. It seems that there are always two or three dining areas to eat in, from one requiring coat and tie, to nothing but a jogging suit. My favorite is the Tudor Grill Rm, with it's vaulted molded plaster ceilings, that I'm told was once covered in tooled leather over the moldings. There's a hugh bowling alley, that includes duck pins, a gym with a canted track around the upper level, squash and handball courts, a large fitness center--never had to wait, large steam rooms-the kind in movies where deals are always done, saunas, massages, a barber shop with manicures, and a magnificent marble pool on an upper floor, with a walking track around it. And if you want to have lunch in the locker room, you can order and it is delivered. There are also sleeping rooms if you want to stay overnight, which we did after a late birthday party in one of the private dining rooms they have. There are even people who are full time residents. Like all private clubs there is a dress code (no denim for sure, on 1st floor and lobby), and no cell phones in the dining rooms, but I sort of like that. No one sits at the bar with a cap on. If you have jeans on, then you can eat in a sports bar downstairs off the bowling alleys, which is actually pretty nice. I'm looking into joining in a few months. You just need two sponsors who are members to write letters and say you are a good guy, etc etc. Meantime, I'm waiting for my next invitation to a workout and lunch.

The directors of this tournament (held on Walmerado Park, West Covina), kept the game going despite multiple requests and concerns raised by coaches and parents regarding the safety of having youth boys age 8-12 play in the 120 degrees heat. Parents were concerned about their child safety and increased risk for heat stroke, heat exhaustion and dehydration. The directors who were seated comfortable under their shaded tent responded that there is no heat advisory warning in Los Angeles county against outdoor recreational activities so they do not have to cancel. Really? There were multiple warnings all over town and on the news. The directors of this Pony tournament just sat under the lit shaded tent and while they force all the youth kids to play under the heat all afternoon ...putting all our kids in an unsafe environment with increased risk for dehydration, heat exhaustion and stroke. Our umpire wanted to end the game becoz of the heat and called out a slide to second base when it was clearly safe. To join this Pony tournament, there is a tournament fee that each team has to pay plus entrance fee at the gate per adult and child age 11 and up, for each day you enter the park. This tournament goes for the whole month of July... multiple divisions and different teams across the Southland playing. So you can calculate the money they are collecting daily from hundreds of people. Is this really a baseball organization whose purpose is to let youth have fun playing baseball or is there something else we are all missing here?

Western PA Boxing Commission has banned this gym from hosting Golden Gloves as Jeff Mucci (the…read moreowner) has burned bridges all over the city with his childish and egotistical behavior. Related to my specific circumstances, I enrolled my son in his Pee-wee boxing program at the age of six years old. He regularly attended this program and very much enjoyed the coaching staff. My son requires physical therapy for a motor skill delay condition and rather than sending him to occupational therapy, his pediatrician agreed that boxing would help him improve his motor skills and coordination. Thankfully, during the 3 years we attended (and never missed a payment spending $900 a year) we had very little interaction with the owner until recently. This past Sunday, apparently my card for my membership needed to be updated, but rather than notifying me in a professional manner, he texted me that he had canceled my son's membership at 6 PM on a Sunday evening because the card had declined. I did not respond. A few days later, he then texted me asking for updated payment information and referencing a past due balance. After attempting to understand the confusion in his communication, especially after he had already communicated the cancellation of the membership, which he charges prior to the start of the month, I could not understand why he was asking for a payment that I clearly did not owe. He went on a 5 paragraph rant about his membership program & ended it by making mention of another member who recently left the gym by stating "tell Rick I said hi!" He was specifically referencing my son's uncle, which made me realize this was the reason for his retaliation. After making him aware that I would be sharing my experience with everyone I come in contact with he then threatened me by telling me his "wife is an attorney and he will not tolerate any statements that would be damaging to his brand". He also let me know that he would pursue legal action "to the fullest extent of the law." We are clearly taking our business elsewhere, but I asked him to remove my son's images from his social media after all of this retaliation against a nine year-old boy due to his conflict with another adult, which once again, is completely unrelated to my son's membership. He has still not removed the 3 photos of my nine-year-old minor child on his publicly accessible, social media platforms which I clearly requested using the same cell phone # he was using to send his strange paragraphs from. My messages and requests have been ignored. I also commented directly on each photo stating clearly that he "does not have my permission to use my minor child's photos for any of his advertising purposes." Instead of removing the posts, he responded by blocking my accounts, removing my comments, and continues to use the photos my son is featured in for advertising purposes. He clearly has not brushed up on the laws protecting the privacy of minor children, but he will soon find out via legal consequences for this behavior.
