Some people complain about that, but honestly, that's why the prices are so good. You'll still find a few familiar brands, but most of the store is quality alternatives at much lower prices. Their frozen seafood section is surprisingly good with great variety and very affordable. The crab cakes and scallops are delicious and easy to prepare, especially for the price. Another hidden gem is their seasoning aisle. You can find really good spices and blends for as low as 79 cents, which is a steal compared to other grocery stores. With food prices constantly going up and grocery shopping getting more expensive by the week, Lidl is absolutely worth adding to your rotation. If you shop smart, you can catch some really solid deals and walk out with quality food without blowing your budget.

Checkouts are slow, and self checkout machines are plagued by glitches or outright broken. Their selection seems to be geared towards some generic suburban market. In NYC, you have to sell onions individually. You cannot make people buy 1lb bags. This weird bulk approach applies to many of their products, and it's just not suited to places where household size is small, and people live in small apartments with limited storage space. Moreover, much of their product selection feels like it's based on market research from 1999 and was never updated. There is very little in terms of vegetarian or vegan options, for example (other than the aforementioned bulk produce). Lastly, I'd love if they had more of the things that you can only get in German Lidls, such as cheap bread spreads (tuna salad, tomato/basil, etc). That would be a real differentiator. They do some of this around Xmas with their sweets (Stollen, Lebkuchen, etc) but not with everyday items.

I've been meaning to go to ALC for a while and finally had a chance to stop in before visiting my folks. The guys behind the counter are the nicest. They recommended the Pork Ridge as it's their Saturday special, and boy did it not disappoint! They sliced the porchetta off the roll and reheated it in the oven for me. It was topped with some aioli and grilled on a panini press, and it was just perfection. I also got the salmon with two sides for my parents to split. They're usually picky eaters, but they loved it! While you wait for your food, you can also do some grocery shopping. They have a ton of meats and cheeses, a fridge dedicated to caviar, and all other sorts of Italian specialties (like these delicious almond cookies from Italy that I bought). There are a few tables in the front if you want to sit and eat, but it's mostly a grab-and-go kinda place. Will 100% be back!

I completely understand that restocking and cleaning are essential, but it would make a huge difference if more of this work could be scheduled during slower hours--like early mornings or later at night--rather than right after work when many customers are trying to shop efficiently on their way home.
