Possibly the worst customer experience of my life. My cousin and I went in here ON his birthday wanting to celebrate by renting a couple of paddle boards and what we faced mimics other comments below: making us feel stupid (about our ability to judge current surf conditions like we're the experts) and then asking my extremely level headed cousin about the details of his hotel stay etc to the point where HE walked out. We're taking about a law enforcement officer and a professional business man being treated like potential trouble makers and thugs. As to how this place stays in business boggles my mind. I'd give it a zero if I could. DO NOT GO HERE. From reading other reviews, it seems like this owners attitude is contingent on how much money you spend. The people that give good reviews paid for surf or SUP lessons for their whole family + lot of money=Ron is in good mood. MOST IMPORTANT PART .. when you are someone like me who he waits for just few minutes after the store closes to by 2 used paddles for only 108.00 dollars(still a chunk of change), and then you hesitate to possibly buy new ones from him another time(he sold me junk) , he will forcefully grab the paddles from your hand, and say how you wasted his time. I was the bigger man and bought the paddles because I felt sorry for him. Maybe business is ok. Anyways. .. I don't even want to see him around, he makes me feel uncomfortable, screw loose or something. I would put 0 stars if it were available!!! Tried to rent a wet suit here today. The two girls were very helpful but I couldn't find one that fit properly. Then here comes the owner this complete asshole and basically told my wife and I he doesn't know what to tell us. That they should have fit and made us feel stupid because we didn't know what size I was. Walked in this shop with my friend. Rod was ok at first but then he got in my personal space while grabbing a board. He told me he didn't understand my questions. He then proceeded to tell me it didn't matter, "You're over analyzing it. You just need to get out there and surf." We moved to Laguna a few months ago and found Rods store for boards, lessons, etc. I'm not sure what is the case with some of the negative reviews because Rod, Wendy, Katie, and Kristie are like our family here. Great service, great products and great people. If anything Rod is concerned for the safety of his patrons and won't rent if the conditions aren't right for an ideal experience. My son is going to school in Laguna and when the whole family was in town dropping him off, we wandered into Rods shop. This is what a surf shop should be, laid back, lots of options, owner hanging out shaping a board... We signed up for lessons and in a couple of days with instructor Jay, my kids were catching all of the waves themselves. Me, well the old guy caught a couple but clearly need some more practice! This place is awful - DON'T go! The owner, Rod, is so rude!! I asked for advice on what to rent and he basically said they were all the same. I had a horrible experience with my rental, the board sucked. A guy on the beach told me it was a terrible board and offered to let me use his. Right away, I started riding waves and it turned my whole day around. When I got back to the shop, I was nice and tried to explain to the owner the experience I had with the board and he seriously did not care - my friend and I couldn't believe it?! These guys are open late and very accommodating. Most surf shops close up early and these guys stay open late. They'll even rent you a board late at night so you don't have to wait for them to open the next day - to surf in the morning. If you're not a surfer, this is a solid place to get a local t-shirt that's not all made in China, etc... read more

Beware of the big bully. Looks like a great convenient surf shop until you meet the pompous owner who talks down to you and won't let you get a word in when trying to explain your needs. Worst business owner I've ever encountered. Also, I am pretty sure that all of the wetsuits sold at this messy shop are irregular and warped. He must try to avoid purchasing full price suits to save money so he buys irregular suits that don't fit anyone correctly. My surfing has improved exponentially after we signed up for a week of surfing lessons at Surf and Paddle in Laguna Beach! I loved working with our surf instructor Travis Sampson who was so committed to helping me find my own way in a very difficult sport. Travis was so fun, kind and amazing to talk with and he always went the extra mile to help me get into a wave if I couldn't do it myself. Rod Greenup the owner of Surf and Paddle is a surfer pro, a true professional and someone I consider a friend. What impressed me was that Rod wouldn't take my money even when I was begging for another lesson for my little girl because the tide was not right. Admirably, Rod wanted to make sure that the conditions were just right for my seven year old Izzy and eight year old Lolo. Rod actually cares about the people he works with and genuinely wants to help you have the right surf experience- even to his own financial detriment. My daughter was able to get her confidence up and catch waves like a little surfer pro and she could never have done it without Travis's guidance. Getting up on a wave was pure bliss for Izzy and now she has developed a skill that will only get better and better. Seeing the look of amazement as my son, Lolo caught a wave for the first time with Travis is a memory I will hold on to for the rest of my life. We also liked working with Jack - a very attentive, mature and skilled surf instructor who was also very mindful and patient with the kids and taught me some great things I will hold onto when I'm battling cold waves on the east coast. I am a criminal defense attorney of 20 years and there are very few people that I trust to teach my kids high risk sports like surfing in waves of 2-4 feet. Rod Greenup and his highly skilled and responsible team of surf instructors are among those few people. I am back home and excited to go back out even if the water temperature will steadily decline-- I have surf skills that will stay with me for life thanks to Rod, Travis and Jack. Rod has always given us a warm welcome when we are in Laguna! His shop is our favorite with his original designs, clothing and art. He has great prices and customer service!!! If it's not in stock he will, can and has ordered it and shipped it to us in Utah. We purchased 2 SUP's and he was so accommodating to show us everything about the inflatables. Then loaded them in my car. (Yes 2 inflatable SUPs in the back seat...) Love this place! The service was excellent! Rod and his crew really know their stuff. We needed full body wets suits for our three kiddos and they did not disappoint. They were very patient while our unexperienced crew tried them on. We had one day left in town before heading back to Oregon, so my wife found this surf shop near where we were staying. Rod was incredibly patient with my daughter, who has never surfed before, and very kind and professional with me. He did dry land coaching first, then took my daughter out and gave her great instruction. She got up about 10 times. He also carefully reviewed with her all the things she learned. Walked in after being told by a shop down the road to drive 15 miles to Costco for a starter surfboard, place was advertising on craigslist some of their rental boards for a season end sale. Rod showed me the used boards, gave some pointers on how to pick one and helped me settle on a new soft top foamie instead. Even offered to install my fins and leash on the fresh board. If you're an aspiring surfer looking for gear, you don't in fact have to drive out of Laguna to get a decent setup. The shop is on the cluttered side with all of the boards and gear on display, but the family-run business feel felt more welcoming rather than some chain store. I did hit the store in October, so I think I had good fortune to have the one on one attention. read more

Best customer service I have ever experienced. I was blown away and truly feel I could never repay Rod for his kindness. I went into the shop looking for a SUP travel case for both my SUP & long board. He suggested bringing my boards down to fit them to the case but I told him I couldn't put the boards on top of my car all alone so he came to my house with me up the street to help me put the boards on my car. He loaded the boards on my car, took them off once we got to the shop, took the fins off (for travel purposes) and found me the perfect case. He then tied it all back onto the top of my car to take back home. I could never thank him enough for all his help. I highly recommend CA surf n paddle to everyone!! read more

This guy was so rude we left and went to another SUP rental. First off as soon as we walked in and said that we wanted to rent a SUP he already had an attitude. He asked if we had looked at the surf and when we said no (I had peaked at the beach, it wasn't windy and there were a lot of surfers/swimmers) he started acting like we were just completely ignorant of the ocean to the point we didn't even understand it was wet. In fact he had such an elitist, snotty attitude I'm surprised he could see past his nose. Finally after berating us, treating us as if we had no idea where we were or what we were doing, he made us walk to the corner to check out the surf. This was the only thing I was thankful for as I could turn to my partner and say we are going elsewhere. I'd like to add that both of us are excellent swimmers, and adventure often. I was even a junior lifeguard. Owning a paddleboard not only have I obviously used it, but I've used it at Laguna Beach. I mean, I've even gone open ocean kayaking so his assumptions only lost him our business. Finally when I looked at the ocean myself, my opinion was the swell was fairly low and it was a little choppy as if there was a light breeze even though there wasn't one. That being said, we decided to go 'SUP'ing anyways and went about a block down to "Brawner Paddle Board Rentals." They were incredibly helpful and even gave my partner some tips for his first time that I hadn't thought of. They are the same price but a thousand times more welcoming and knowledgeable, as they told us the swell was actually fairly low (which I had thought so too). Upon actually getting out into the water, my partner (who had never been on a SUP before) was standing within half an hour. We ended up having a great time and will definitely never being going back to this location, only Brawner. read more
