Stood at the gun counter for 2 hours on a Saturday without anyone even acknowledging I existed. Zero 9mm ammo on the shelf. I had been on the website and found two separate plinking rifles I wanted to buy, but after two hours I was over it. Went on the website again where I ordered and paid for them. Full seven days to get them from a store an hour away. NICS got "delayed" which is pretty common here, so I called to try and check the status after a week and after being hung up on before even answering by customer service, the guy who finally answered spoke like he hated having to work at all, and basically said it could take 30 days so there's no point in calling for a status update. Gun counter wouldn't even answer. 30 days to just hope I get a call about taking possession of my $1000 purchase. Incredible waste of time for overpriced products and rude customer service. This is one store our area could do without. read more

Big fan of Cabela's. Love the Decor, the cleanliness is always on point and the staff super friendly. Love the price for the product. This is the perfect place to stop in to pick up your hunting license, to pick up your ammo, buy a new gun. If clothing is what your after they have boty men's and women's Casual or is you specifically need hunting, or fishing they can hook you up. Need a boating, kayak, or a 4X4 they can sell you one of those as well? They have it all under One roof. Spend some time going and visiting a Cabela's you won't regret it. I think it's a great family atmosphere. Especially around Christmas. They have the best north pole and santa comes to visit to sit with all the children for pictures. Without waisting further time with this Cabela's, I'll keep this on point. But to the conclusion, buy firearms anywhere but Cabela's in Grandville. It took closer to 1.75hrs to process paperwork on a firearm purchased from an out-of-state Cabela's and sent to this store for pickup. In the twenty-four years I've purchased firearms, I've never had a worse experience than at the Cabela's in Grandville. No notification the firearm arrived. No return call on the voicemail I left inquiring on if the firearm arrived. It took multiple calls to get through to a person to see if it arrived. After approximately 1.5hrs of waiting at the store, the third person to review my paperwork wanted to argue how my signature on the paperwork, which is signed using a finger on a laptop, didn't match my CPL and Driver's license. So I didn't think it unreasonable to, after 1.5hrs plus of waiting, somewhat loose my cool and ask for the store manager (because a manager was the one arguing with me).I believe it was then "Dave" who came out and instantly began telling me they'll just cancel the order and refund me, which I didn't want. I was refused contact with the store manager. I was made to sign the paperwork again, with the signature appearing the same as the previous, and the manager accepted it. The bureaucracy of this store is going to be what destroys it. I'm fairly certain Cabela's will be filling bankruptcy in the near future. I all around had a good time picking out my new ice fishing rod. Most of all the workers were great. But one laddie over behind the optics counter named Bonnie is very rude. She came up to me well talking to another outfitter and said very unnecessary and rude things to me in front of the other worker. This place is amazing for a person who wishes to spend time really looking through sporting goods at an I depth level. They typically have everything in stock that is in their flyer and the prices are at or below that of other vendors in the area. I find the number of staff members to be higher than average because of he volume of traffic they have. The level of knowledge each staff member has regarding firearms and ammunition seems to be high and questions are always welcome. If you are into collecting rewards points, you can sign up online and take advantage of some free "stuff" by simply redeeming points at the registered at checkout. This may be a one stop shop for most people and the combination of things to buy in all areas of outdoor activities; fishing, hunting, target shooting, etc is pretty much unmatched. Always do your diligence though and check prices at other vendors, especially Gander Mountain so they can price match to save you even more money. read more

I wanted a Hornady® Lock-N-Load® O.A.L Gauge Modified Case for the purpose of reloading rifle ammunition. I could've ordered it from Amazon Prime with free shipping, but I desired to have it right away on Sunday afternoon January 5, 2020. So, I checked online to see if this Cabela's (a 60 minute round trip drive from my home) had it in stock before venturing out there to purchase it. I'm also a Cabela's Club member and thought I'd also pick up a few other items since I was going to make the trip. The item in question for which I was specifically making the trip in order to purchase that same day, was for a .308 Winchester rifle. This might be the most common centerfire rifle in the free world next to the .223 Remington. Unfortunately despite online indications from their website that it was in-stock at this Cabela's location, neither I, nor Cabela's store floor attendant named, Bill, could find it on the shelf. Bill seemed mildly annoyed that I had bothered him with my request for help right from the beginning. He told me that they just received a truck shipment with many items and the Hornady® Lock-N-Load® O.A.L Gauge Modified Case that I wanted was likely somewhere in a large box on that shipment. However, he moaned that it would take him an hour to find it for me, so I he would not be able to help me that day. He gave a fake apology and walked away. I went and asked another employee to get me the manager. That department's manager was off duty, but another department manager just happened to be walking by and she grabbed him to ask for help. His name was Zach. Zach listened attentively to my dilemma and jumped into action to have a couple of people do what Bill thought impossible... search thru the boxes of the recent shipment! Zach also checked the bill of lading and discovered that what I wanted was not even on that shipment (smart move). He did NOT quit, however. Zach came back out into the store to give me this update. He explained that the website inventory is sometimes inconsistent. He told me it's possible, since these are small items, a few were stolen causing a stock loss inventory error. Or maybe they were still in the back stock room and were never brought out to the floor rack yet. So, he instructed his stock room employees to keep up the search! Zach also offered to order one and have it shipped to me with the shipping charges waived. I thanked Zach and explained that I had 30 minutes left to shop. If they couldn't find it before I had to leave, they could give up the urgent search at that time and I'd buy one from Amazon with the free shipping. Unfortunately Zach and his crew were not successful before I had to leave. I still spent over $200 in Cabela's that day. I gave Cabela's Grandville two stars due to Bill's poor attitude and lack of customer support. I find that attitude far too prevalent in this store for my taste. However, department manager Zach gets SIX STARS! He was terrific. I predict Cabela's will lose him as an employee sooner or later. I hope this review gets back to Zach, Bill, and the owners of Cabela's. I truly wish them all the best and hope this bit of feedback helps them all. read more

I would like to talk to you about an issue that happened in your store on 3/19 concerning my son and me. I went into your store (a store we frequent and buy from regularly) to look for a 12-gauge shotgun. The sales associates were very pleasant with my son, letting him hold it, showing him the proper shells to use and even talked to him about turkey hunting. I than had a background check done on me, my son paid for the gun with his card, and we walked out of the store. Easy transaction, right? We got home, shot a few rounds with it and it jammed. I called the store, and they told me to take it apart. And that was the beginning of where your store went wrong. First of all, it was a brand-new purchase. You absolutely do not tell someone to take it apart. You tell them to bring it back for a replacement or refund. So, we brought it back after a discussion on the phone. When we brought it back, a conversation started up about my son using it for turkey hunting. And that is where the second problem for your sales associated went wrong. When they found out that the shotgun was for my son they immediately got concerned, told her they were refunding the money and red flagged me in the system so that I could never purchase a gun from Cabela's or Bass Pro Shops again. So basically, this is what happened. Your sales associates up front while spending the time with her son talking about the gun, never ONCE questioned his age. So, your associates screwed up and to cover it nicely, refunded her money (actually it was purchased on his card, but the money was refunded to me) and then your store had the nerve to red flag me forever. Fast forward to 4/24 I get a call from John W store (GM) and he told me over the phone that if I would be able to pass everything legally then I could buy a gun from Cabela's again just not the shot gun. Well, 4/25 I asked for an email stating this, and he won't send me an email stating our convo through email on 4/24. States he cant do this........... read more

This location has become unshoppable. Pricing is horrendous. I tried to buy a soft sided gun case, and have been here twice, nothing is priced. When I brought it up last time I was told "just tell me which one you want, I'll look up the price". Not an acceptable answer. I ended up needing help and asked the man that was near the Camo section. He was super rude and just was bitchy, and even rolled his eyes at me. He was no help so I asked someone else, she had no idea what I was talking about and just acted as if I wasn't there. Man, I don't know what all these terrible reviews are about. Probably the same people who are running around in the pandemic not wearing masks. Seriously the best experience I've ever had purchasing a gun. Trent (the salesman) and David (the manager) went FAR above and beyond anything I would have ever expected (especially if I had looked at these other reviews)! There was an issue with my online firearm order (that Trent spotted and I wouldn't have, by the way) and Trent busted his ass to get me something that would work for my situation. He and David realized I had driven from Lansing and they gave me the deal of a lifetime just to make the trip worthwhile. Maybe this isn't the place for everybody, but wow, these employees were incredibly helpful to us, made us feel super comfortable, they were very patient and had answers (as basic as we may have needed) to every question we had. I will for sure go back, based purely off of my experience today. Side note - my girlfriend who is from California was with me. She gets very nervous while gun shopping because it is so different in Michigan. Trent, noticing her nervousness, gave her a very basic little gun safety lesson - essentially just showed her how everything worked, what not to do, what to be careful of etc.. I have gotten gifts, clothes, ammo, supplies, guns, a crossbow, and other miscellaneous stuff. I've never had a problem with anything, from purchasing online and picking up in store, to finding a cool gift for a friend, or to trying out a crossbow in store before I buy. I've been satisfied with every purchase I've made. Some of the staff are more knowledgeable then others, sure. But it's pretty easy to find someone who knows their stuff to help you out. I went two separate times to purchase a firearm. The customer service is so slow I never was able to talk with a rep. A one hour wait on a Tuesday evening before walking out. Now Friday another nearly one hour wait and the only progressed with three numbers called. I was still six numbers away so I'm taking my business elsewhere. There are plenty of employees in the store just not in the right area. I will go to Barracks 616. Sure I will pay a little bit more than Cabela's sale price but I will at least get service. What a disaster experience. I went in and late August looking for a sale on camo short pants. Was told by the supposed " clothing manager" to go to the bargain room location of the store where she guided me to absolutely nothing I was looking for in short pants. As I was leaving the store there was a plethora of camo short pants on sale racks right near the huge lobby. Now why didn't she to direct me to those racks when the initial question I asked had both if us standing only few feet from those racks? I saw somebody with a manager tag and told them of this experience and he started to argue with me as if I was in the wrong. This is my second bad experience in the store and why the earlier one was rectified by the store manager, I've just decided that it's a typical rude Grand Rapids uneducated level of service and I will not return. read more

On the flip side they aren't very well stocked, especially in their camping section, and the majority of the stuff they sell you can find cheaper elsewhere. I was so excited when they finally built a Cabela's in Grand Rapids. I literally would go to look around every week. All my clothes and sporting gear was Cabela's brand. Then something changed. The staff started being disengaged, the bargain cave was removed, prices kept going up and it lost its uniqueness. I recently went back to return a broken Cabela's tourney fishing pole that had a life time warranty. They made me feel like I was stealing from them because I would even ask. It was emphatically told to me that since Bass Pro bought them they no longer honor this. After some talk he said that I will do it for you just one time. He sent me to the fishing section to have someone replace it. The gentleman literally gave me the cheapest rod in stock and said this was equivalent. I questioned his unquestionable authority on what equality is and he offered the opinion that it's better than nothing and that's really what they were entitled to give me. When I went back to the "Customer Service" counter I let them know what happened and he said, oh, those guys aren't great with people but they know a lot about poles. I did my swap and left, with no intention of returning. It's mind boggling how good something was and how quickly, a poorly run conglomerate with no attention to customers service, can take it. I live in the area, have a Cabela's club visa and some award points. I can't ever go in there without coming out mad. Bad, Bad attitude of the employees, never have in stock what they have on display and if you do find things you want...long slow lines to get out of there. I wanted some expensive sun glasses ( gift card from my son) can't get anybody over by the security case; oh well, it must be God telling me that I really need a new steelhead rod. Picked out a rod and of course, they don't have a reel I want. They have it on display but not in stock. The brown shirt says he can give me the display if I wait a few minutes, yeh great, I have been in there for hour and half, there are more brown shirts around then there are fly at a busted watermelon. So I go to the counter and tell the kid, I am pissed and I want to cash in my gift card...can't. Never asked why I wanted to, just can't. Called 4 times in 3 hours trying to ask camping department if they have any of a specific item left. Operator said sorry they're too busy every time after trying to ring me through. Finally asked for a manager and got voicemail. This is the middle of a Thursday. Finally asked the operator to find anyone just to check and she said we should have 1 or 2. I told her I didn't want to drive out there if they didn't. She reluctantly went and looked and I'm thankful she did because they didn't have any left except the floor model. I went to Cabela's to look for sleeping bags for our upcoming family camping trip. I was unsure exactly what I wanted to purchase, and wandered the camping secetion trying to decide. I saw numerous sales associates, but no one offered me help. I approached two associates who were clearly talking to each other about personal matters. Not wanting to be rude, I stood near them for a moment, expecting them to stop there conversation and ask if the could help. When they didn't, I approached them more directly, and they actually looked at each other and then turned and walked away. I wanted to see the size weight and how hard the slide works. With the covid deal I waited in line for 45 min. When I spot the firearm I point it out and say that one there! As he reaches for it I say yes she loves purple! He freezes and says sorry she will need to be here to fill out the paper work. I said no not buying it just want to look at it before I bring her in. He says sorry i can't show you anymore guns since your buying for someone else. I stated to this half witt once more IM NOT BUYING, IM LOOKING! He stares at me for a min and says ill go get the manager maybe he can explain it better to you. So the manager shows up with a looking at me like im the lowest of low life's on the planet and says you can't buy guns for other people. I have a brother who speaks of Cabela's as if it's almost an outdoorsman's religious type pilgrimage that every fisherman should take at least yearly. I was mildly underwhelmed by my experience here. The employees didn't seem to really be looking for customers to help but gave the impression that they were maybe trying to avoid customers by constantly being on the move at a fairly brisk pace. Who knows maybe I'm wrong, but they sure seemed to almost all be doing a lot of walking around and never seeming to get to customers that I could see. There was one man who was stationary, unfortunately though he was stationary with a phone glued to his ear. Every time he'd hang up it would immediately ring and back on the phone he'd go. If this were my store I'd have somebody out of the customers sight answer the phone calls and leave the sales staff on the floor to help customers who are there trying to spend their hard earned money. After several calls I finally was able to snatch him away before the phone could ring again and I was less than impressed. I told him the type fishing lure I was looking for and he took me to where they might be and left me to go back and answer the phone some more. In addition to the not so helpful staff here I was surprised that such a well known store would have so many items out of stock or almost out of stock. Who knows maybe they had been recently selling a lot more than normal and new shipments were coming in that afternoon, but it just struck my as weird. In the future if I need something from Cabela's I'll just order online and not waste my time coming here. Hopefully I just hit them on a bad day. By the way it was not really busy and it was a weekday so they appeared to have plenty of employees available, they just seemed to busy or moving to fast to be of help to customers. The one thing I noticed about pricing was that surprisingly some things were fairly reasonably priced. Of course they have to pay for all that taxidermy and other nice things in their store so other items were way higher priced than say at your local Walmart store. If a customer shops wisely he/she will know what to buy here and what to buy elsewhere. UPDATE 5-9-16: I stopped in about a week ago and received even worse service than my previous visit. Once again I had trouble finding an employee to assist me. I finally located a woman restocking a fridge with containers of bait (well that's what I assume was in the little plastic tubs like worms come in) and explained the type of lure I was looking for. Her solution was to tell me she didn't think they carried it, but if so it would be in that aisle over there or that aisle while pointing towards the directions she was talking about. Not exactly real helpful since I'd already walked every aisle in the fishing section and struck out. It would have been much better customer service to walk me to those 2 locations and assist me in trying to locate what I was looking for or a suitable substitute. I'm finished with Cabella's after these two experiences and will go back to ordering online from Bass Pro Shops since they have comparable items and pricing and very fast shipping. This is one of those deals where it truly is more of a loss for Cabella's than it is for me. They won't be forced to permanently close their doors due to me not going there again, but they have lost out on I'd guess about $300 a year in sales to me. If they lose a lot of people like me it could seriously afffect their profit margins. On the rare occasion I feel a need to go to a large outdoor retail store I will happily drive down to Indiana where the nearest Bass Pro Shops store is since I've been there before and gotten good friendly service from thier employees. The only good thing I can say about this most recent visit was this time the displays of fishing lures and other fishing related items seemed to be much better stocked, but that alone is not enough to make me want to return here. Once again this visit was also on a weekday with only moderate customer traffic so it's not like I was there on a weekend when I'm sure they're probably a lot busier. I'm downgrading my review from my previous 2 star rating down to a 1 star rating. read more
