Very pleased with the experience we had with AKB. Hope to use again for our kitchen…read more Ben and Chris were professional, knowledgable, and dependable. We were pleased with the plumbing, electricial, and tile (Ivan and Simon) sub-contractors that were used for our bathroom project. We've encountered our fair share of contractors and, for this job in general, received many over-the-top quotes and/or no shows. Ben was reasonably priced and consistent in his communication. He provided us with a project calendar (we've never had that happen w/ a contractor) and while, his team went over their original due date--unexpected issues--he maintained communication with us about who would be where, when, and why. Very happy :)

I had quotes from 3 other individuals/companies around town and they were either too sales-like for me or weren't responsive at all. I have to admit I was hesitant about going forward with AKB since I'd not read any review about them, but I had a good feeling after I met Benjamin to receive the initial estimate. I got the impression that he actually really cared about his work and the job he does and it was more than just a paycheck for him. I really liked how he was even able to give me a ballpark estimate with just some pictures I sent him before he came over to give a true estimate. I initially reached out to Benjamin in late May and we had decided to start work the first week of July (on that note, he also had earlier availability than anyone else I had received a quote from). We wound up pushing that back once we received the final quote as we wanted more time to save money for the job. He started work on our kitchen on a Monday and was basically done by Friday, except for a few items he had to come back to finish up early the next week. He was great about communicating when he would be at the house and did a fantastic job cleaning up each day--we were able to still use our kitchen in the evenings. We did the back-splash ourselves to save money, and after finishing that, I'm just floored at how beautiful this kitchen looks. I even have to force myself to go to sleep and stop staring at my kitchen each night. It was 100% worth the money and I would recommend Affordable Kitchen & Bath to anyone who wants quality work for a great price.

She helped us with the tactical things (i.e., picking our cabinets and countertops, mapping everything out, etc.,), but it's the more personal, human touch, and extra care she has put in that stand out even more. She's worked directly with our contractor, she's stayed engaged with us through a pretty long, drawn-out process, and she's always making sure everything is on the up and up. Elise is the poster for what incredible customer service and support look like. Our experience with Cabinets to Go has been absolutely stellar thanks to her (and their stunning, high-quality products). Elise - we appreciate you so much!!

So my boyfriend are I are in the midst of home renovation craziness…read more We had been working every night after work, sometimes up until after midnight, on repairs, and then the day before our big move, we needed to shop around for some fixtures for our clawfoot tubs. An employee at Lowe's (funny enough) suggested we try out Ferguson, so right after they opened on Saturday, we walked in. But I doubt we'll ever be back. We looked around Ferguson's beautiful showroom for a few minutes, and I have to give them props here. It really is a nice space that makes you want to daydream about kitchens and baths. One of their saleswomen came out to talk to us, and from there, the interaction went down hill. She seemed frustrated with us before we could really ask her anything. About halfway through explaining that we were in need of a shower curtain ring, overflow kit and the specialty pipe to extend the shower head from the ceiling, she abruptly turned and walked back into her office. My boyfriend gave me this exasperated look, and he rarely complains about service. She came back a few minutes later with some catalogs and started hurriedly flipping through pages. She next asked us a series of questions like she was expecting us to say the wrong thing. She asked us about the measurements of the tub. I admit we should have come with those in hand, but she didn't even want to give us options. (Come to find out after talking to some other plumbing supply shops, that there are only a few options for some of these parts. We could have easily identified what we needed if she would have shown us what was available.) She told us that it typically takes a week to 10 days for items to come in. Other plumbing shops have told us three days for the same items from the same brands. I think she just wanted to get us out the door. Did we smell bad or something? It's not like we showed up in our dirty work clothes from when we were grouting tile. We are two, childless 30-somethings with disposable income, who are eager to buy items to renovate our new house -- a pretty desirable demographic really. Maybe we just got a saleswoman who was having a bad day. I don't know. But the first thing we talked about after leaving was that we weren't going back. And happily, we have since found other businesses that will gladly help us out.

Recently, we found Luke's Repairs and Remodeling to address the following issues: all interior and exterior doors were replaced and reframed, all pocket doors were replaced with new hardware which required removing and replacing the drywall. We also needed the entire house painted, a closest built around our mechanicals and additional shelving erected in the laundry area, as well as some electrical work. Luke came out, listened to everything we had to say and gave excellent input for the project. He gave us an estimate and stayed within the estimate for the entire job. Luke started on time, communicated throughout the entire timeline and ended on time. Luke, as well as his skilled carpenters, never minded being interrupted with questions and always took the time to communicate clearly. The project took approximately two weeks to complete. We thoroughly enjoyed visiting Luke's warehouse to choose the items we needed for the repair and remodeling. Luke also did all the ordering, pick up and checked the materials that were delivered. We never had to bother with any items that were needed for our home. When I asked for his credentials, Luke did not hesitate to provide me a copy of his Kentucky contractor's license and his insurance. We noticed the way Luke was with the men he worked with. They had immense respect for each other. We are confident that the crew will stay with Luke. Finding a quality business to do home repair and remodeling is very difficult. Luke's Repair and Remodeling is a stellar company. My wife said, "Luke and his carpenters have made me fall in love with my home again". As for me, this was a $40,000 project and I could not be happier. We are looking forward to this summer when Luke will be back out to our home to remodel our master bathroom. Thanks Luke.

My husband and I reached out to Scott Of All Trades after a tree fell down in our backyard during a summer storm. The tree took out part of our fence and fell on power lines, pulling the power pole and lines off of our home and siding and trim along with it. I had heard good things about Scott Of All Trades from its reviews and friends who had worked with them. And considering we have a 100-year-old house in the Highlands, having a great handyman available for odd jobs would be extraordinarily helpful. So we made an appointment, and Scott, of Scott Of All Trades, came out to the house to survey the damage and work we needed done. He, my husband and I talked about how the vinyl siding needed to be replaced along with the wooden sheathing, wooden siding and foam insulation board behind it. The corner trim piece needed to be fixed. While Scott was here, we could use the deck stairs being reinforced. And when the power came off the house, the pole fell on our side gate. Scott pointed out that the gate wasn't made correctly to begin with and would hang better if it was repaired and the brackets assembled correctly. After this meeting, we felt confident about working with Scott Of All Trades, and he had several jobs to work on -- not even getting to the fence yet. He gave us a fair quote and came back to make the repairs. The work took him a few hours. But when we inspected the siding work closer, it became apparent that he put up the vinyl siding but nothing behind it -- no wooden sheathing, wooden siding or foam insulation board. You could push on the siding and see that it was hollow behind it. There was nothing between the vinyl siding and the back of the lathe from our plaster walls. He matched the color of the new siding to the old, and his work reinforcing the stairs looked great. But the gate was not reassembled like we had originally discussed. The brackets were still hung wrong. It looked like he just replaced the broken slats. So we contacted him, and told him that we weren't happy with the work. Regarding the gate, he replied the estimate was to fix the gate, not rebuild it, and along with replacing the broken slats he adjusted it to hang better. But it was more of less in working order beforehand, and we would not have agreed to pay to fix it had Scott not originally pointed out how badly built it was in the first place. At this point, we offered to pay for the deck reinforcement and materials; if he wanted the rest, he needed to come back and do the work as it was originally discussed and decided on. We paid the adjusted amount, and he agreed to come back. On his subsequent visit, he was at the house for a couple of hours, fixed the siding and took another crack at the gate. He asked me to inspect after he was done, and it looked good to me. But after he left, we opened the gate to find that it now hits and rubs up against the corner of the house -- the corner trim he fixed on his previous visit. I take some of the blame for not testing how the gate closed when he was at the house, but he closed the gate before he left; he knew it hit the house. He fixed what he could and left it, not telling us that more work will need to be done so that the gate doesn't rub up against the corner. And then following this visit, he contacted us several times asking for our payment, starting with a day or two after his last visit. Typically contractors have given a payment due date of two to four weeks out from the repairs. We definitely want to pay for what we owe -- assuming the work is done well -- so we dropped a check in the mail roughly a week after the work had been done. The check had still not reached him a few days later. He texted us his address; it had recently been changed. To the best of our knowledge, we sent it to the right address, but it would have been helpful to have gotten an updated invoice with the remaining total and new address clearly written on it. And if we had been offered the ability to pay by credit card from the get-go, waiting for the payment would not have been an issue. He pushed to pick the check up via our mailbox the following day, and we ended up having to cancel the check. (Thankfully our bank waived the $35 fee.) I texted him about the issue of the gate hitting the house, and he said he would look at it when he picked up the check. I was passing through the first floor when I saw him arrive, and I walked toward the front door to greet him when I saw him walk up the steps, grab the check and walk back down, not looking at the gate once. Scott Of All Trades was given repeated chances and did not strike us as professional. The whole experience felt like a series of headaches. The work took too long to be completed. The handyman search continues.
