When they're Open...they're Packed! Due to COVID-19, no indoor dining and only open Thurs-Sunday for take-out only. So how's the pizza?? It's pretty damn good! For Van Horn it's the best pizza in town in my opinion. The crust has a good flavor by itself, the toppings tastes fresh, plus it wasn't under/over sauced. Plus you can have a beer or cocktail while you wait at the bar. If you don't call your order in advance, you will definitely be waiting at the bar or in your car. Hate to do this, but had a totally unacceptable experience here. Ordered takeout. They told me 45 minutes. So I went after 45 minutes. It took me 5 minutes to actually talk to someone. She checked on my order in the kitchen and said she was sorry but it would be at least another hour. What? Made no sense. I will say she was nice. But still I will never be back. After a hot day swimming at Balmorhea (and in advance of climbing Guadalupe the next day), my girlfriend and I were in need of mass quantities of carbohydrates (shout out Beldar!). We popped into Cactus Cantina in Van Horn, and let's just say we had the most amazing time. What a bar! Great sports on the television screens, friendly bartenders, and an incredibly eclectic crowd (including some very interesting people who work at the local aerospace organization). The appetizers were fantastic, the perfect sports pub greasy snack. The bar had a very broad selection of everything, and I even had two shots of liqueurs I had never previously tried. The wonderful finale of the evening was a large pepperoni and jalapeno pizza we took back to our hotel across the street: magnificent! Great bar, guys, stay cool. read more

Not really a pizza fan but I suppose it is because I haven't been getting pizza from the right place! The crust was actually delicious and the toppings weren't over spiced but not bland, either. Cactus cantina is a small bar/restaurant found in little Van Horn, TX. They advertise that they have the best pizza in town and they really do compared to the only 2 competitors. The appetizer sampler was mediocre/below mediocre but the pizza really was yummy. Would recommend getting to go and enjoying in your hotel, service is extremely slow. read more

I loved this little joint in the city of Van Horn. It was also one of the few open restaurants at night in the area. Lots of truck drivers stop here to eat and drink. We stopped here as well in our drive across the country and was pleasantly surprised at the food and drinks they had. The jalapeño poppers were amazing! The drinks were good, but not super strong. We also got a personal size pizza, but when it came, it looked more like a large dominos size pizza! The best part was the price for everything, can't beat that! They have karaoke nights too, so come grab a drink and get your singing on! read more

We chose this place because the reviews looked good. Went in about 6:15 on a Thursday and there were quite a few people there drinking. After about 5 minutes, a customer got up from her table and brought us and another couple menus. She mentioned that she didn't work there, but wanted to help out. The bartender went into the kitchen 3 times while we waited but never came out from behind the bar. We waited about 15 more minutes and noticed that no one was eating and a couple of tables didn't have drinks. We decided to try someplace else. read more

Spending the night at the Holiday Inn after a long drive. Didn't want fast food or go to a restaurant and have a large dinner. Called in an order for 2 small salads and a small veggie pizza. We went to pick our order up and were back in our room in 15 minutes. We thought the small salad was going to be the usual iceberg lettuce but to our surprise it was spring lettuce with cheese and small amount of onions. The pizza was the perfect size. It was a not over sauced, perfect amount of veggies, not to much cheese and the crust was fantastic. We were traveling through Van Horn and decided to stop here for dinner as we didn't want fast food. We weren't expecting much but we're pleasantly surprised. We had a pizza (personal size was big) which was surprisingly tasty and chicken strips with onion rings which were also good. They also had a pretty decent selection of beers on tap. When you consider how cheap all of this was, it's more than a worthwhile place for dinner. If I lived in Van Horn I'd be a regular. read more

Staying at El Capitan the night of ALCS Game 7...cross the street to what looks like a little dive bar, open the door and there's a cute little cantina style restaurant with a lady from NY making YUMMY pizza comes out of the kitchen to put the Astros/Yankees game one. Just passing through town wanted a quick bite looked on Yelp.... it was was five stars but with only 6 reviews I thought what the heck i will give it a try, the place has an inviting atmosphere relatively small but cool theme The first thing I noticed inside was the noise level, the music was playing rather loudly so people were having to talk over the top of it, it was a little hard to converse with other people at my table, when the waitress arrived she was polite brought our menus and took our drink order. We started with an appetizer which came out quickly the mozzarella sticks weren't anything special but they were crisp and the cheese was melty but not too hot when it came time to place our order we decided on a pizza, it was so loud in there that the waitress had trouble understanding what we were trying to say we wanted our pizza to go we tried to explain that we were going to have another drink but we wanted her to put the pizza order in right away and bring it out when done, the pizza wasn't as hot as it could be I believe it sat in back for a while, we had to ask her about it. Maybe she thought we were wanting another drink? We stopped at an RV park in town as we were passing through from Houston to SLC. They were the only place in town that delivered and I am SO GLAD because their food was great! Van Horn looks like a great little town. Clean, nicely laid out. There are, however, remnants of failed restaurants everywhere. Since the Cactus Cantina was closest to where we were staying we decided to stop in for a drink or two and a snack. Not too busy when we walked in, except for the seats at the very small bar. Filled up quickly though by 7pm and there was one server for about 30 customers. We ordered Tanqueray and Tonics, which I don't believe is a particularly unusual drink to ask for at a bar, especially one that advertises the largest selection of beer and alcohol in town. At first we were told that they might not have Tanqueray and then they didn't have tonic. Turned out they did have Tanqueray and they found some tonic, which was totally flat....no fizz t all. Ordered the Parmesan chicken wings as well and got fries with them which we didn't order. The wings were pretty mediocre and the Parmesan garlic sauce was very salty (like over processed, bottled stuff). It appeared almost everyone else in the place ordered the pizza and beer, which in retrospect is what we might have had better luck with. Service was friendly and the place was clean. Several TV's with sports if that is what you want. My husband and I hand the burgers...they were AWESOME! But, it was the onion rings that were truly the best I ever had! Stopped here on our cross country road trip. The bar tenders were nice and the drinks were good. If I ever come back through Van Horn, Texas I would definitely stop here!
