The staff went out of their way to help us and I would recommend this hotel/casino to everyone. You get what you pay for I guess, our room key had to be replaced SEVEN times, super frustrating not being able to get into our own room especially after a long day of work. There's also no fridges in the room so we had to bring a cooler and get ice every day..again frustrating after working 12+ hours. What a gem in the middle of no where .i was traveling with 3 girls under the age of 12, coming from Seattle to Los Angles, we got on the wrong road, as I always travel the main interstate, so glad this time I didn't . The room was perfect, the buffet was small but better then most I have had in Vegas, quality all the way. The pool is awesome . The only reason for not giving5 starts is, while my girls were in the pool, there was a young couple blond girl and a young man. Sitting there her in a string bathing suit doing things that children should not see.what made me mad was the young man and his friends seem to work there, I think he worked the pool Area as I head him Tell one of the others in a joking manner, I'll pick that up, and everyone knew them . As far as RV parks go, I thought it was fine. The lower park is better (trees further from the highway). They bathrooms were clean and warm! Plenty of hot water! We stayed for free (with our hereo's card veteran). Otherwise 22 a night. Water was shut for freezing temps. Nice spot especially if you like casinos! read more

I booked Cactus Petes through Hotwire. They would not take me reservation even though I showed them the papers, email and called Hotwire and they told them I had a reservation. They told me the reservation was for the Horseshoe but I could "Upgrade" for $40". They blamed Hotwire for the "Mistake" saying their site told me the wrong info. In my book if you are a multi-million dollar casino you honor what I was given even if it is wrong. After being turned away because West Star gave our reservation for a handicapped room away, I called these places. I was informed that the rate was $69 per night. I told them I saw $40 per night on the interned and the person I was talking to asked where I saw that, denied $40 per night and insisted their rate was $69. They spoke with such an accent I had trouble understanding them. If it's listed under their website, they should honor it. This was a Monday night, so I doubt they were full, in the middle of February. Do not stay in any hotel/motel in Jackpot, Nevada. They rip you off. I,ve been here many times but it,s been years.Was really disappointed.I realize it,s this crazy world that's affected it there.Can,t see us returning.Our room was very clean but wasn't able to take a shower because the faucet didn't work.Then when I checked out the front desk guy said you have to pull the handle out. The folks at the desk were initially rude. The front desk people acted like he hated us for trying to check in ten minutes really. 2 hours later, we got our room. The general staff was really good. Super helpful, and super into getting us what we paid for. Then we went to Nosh. I waited 45 minutes for a grilled cheese sandwich that was burnt outside while the cheese wasn't melted at all. The security team at this casino is garbage. If you get lost or wind up some place they say you should not be they grill you like a Russian spy instead of assisting you to find your way. The guy that grilled me sat me in his office in silence while he pecked away at his computer while I assumed he was verifying my room number and location. When I asked WTF are you doing and he ignored me I went off on his ass and he banned me from the casino at 7am! This review is for the buffet, mostly. My sis and I are two broke-ass dirty traveling hippies, and we swung thru here on our way back from a 3-week roadtrip around Wyoming and Montana. I always wanted to check out Jackpot, because it seemed to creepy/depressing/Lynchian....and guess what; it was! We had martinis at one of the casino bars while trying to decide where to eat. Out options were pretty much limited to the steakhouse, the cafe and the buffet. We opted for the buffet, for laffs -- and because the price was right (around $25 each, including 1 glass of wine apiece). As far as buffets go, it was all right. Remember -- I'm from Vegas; I KNOW from buffets!! This one was mid-range. Not a ton of options, but enough interesting stuff to keep you on your toes. A few fancy things like little watermelon/feta salads-in-ramekins...but also plenty of basics: prime rib, mac n cheese, a few Asian things. The usual array of mini carrot cakes and whatnot for dessert. Would I come here again? Probably not. But it was fine. read more

Oh my, where do I start. I made reservations over the phone. Beware, I was told the first 10 Cactus Pete reservation numbers that come up are not actually Cactus Pete, even though they say they are. We arrived about 6:30 p.m. and were told our room was across the street at the Horse Shu. I asked for a room at Cactus Pete's and was told I would have to pay for the difference. We decided to check out the one across the street. We got there, the parking lot had no lights, the outside doors were unlocked and there are no employees on that site. It was dirty, smelly and scary. The room had dirt on the floor and the bedspread looked dirty. We packed back up and went back across to Cactus Pete's. We requested a room in that hotel, which we were given. The double queen was actually a double full. That room was not much better. On the plus side. The employees are very nice and the buffet was excellent. We have driven through many times but never stayed the night. Now that we have, it won't ever happen again. read more

Your basic hotel+casino, complete with ciggy stank permeating the atmosphere. Fairly large single king room with a comfy bed and big tub, but water pressure is non-existent and the sink drained about as slowly as my sinuses after a dust storm. Buffet rather overpriced in my opinion, but the prime rib was fork-tender and the roast veggies very tasty. Bedside clocks and TV are set to Mountain time, while Nevada is actually Pacific - Mountain doesn't kick in until you cross the Idaho border a mile to the north. I played video poker for over an hour and never once received a proposition that would end with me in a tub full of ice. Whether that's a plus or minus is up to you. Oh, also: open (unsecured) Wi-Fi. If you come to Jackpot, please stay in the Towers at Cactus Petes. Brand new granite countertops in the bathrooms, flat screen LCD screen, SUPER COMFY and luxurious beds... It will make you feel like you DIDN'T just drive into the smallest, sh*ttiest town EVER. You can't tell your staying in a casino either - it's quiet and not smoky AT ALL. Instead, you feel like you are staying in downtown Chicago... that is until you look out the window and see desolation... but hey. The casino itself it relatively small, but big enough... the poker table area is small but nice and all the other tables and slots are okay. It's obviously nothing like Vegas, but the dealers are nice and if you gamble long enough and actually ASK, the pit bosses are quick to give you free food, free room, free cash, etc in coupons to get you to come gamble again - which is exactly what we did! We got the free Player's Cards in the summertime because we stayed and won over a grand on blackjack and roulette tables, so come to find out, we BOTH got coupons in the mail for $25 free cash, $20 food voucher, and a free 2 night stay within the dates they listed, which was a month block. SWEET. This time, we walked with $1400, had our nice king size non-smoking room for free (which we only stayed a night with), free food (which was great food at the Desert Room actually) and free cash. Even if we would've lost, Cactus Petes is a great little casino and it's only 2.5 hours from Boise. NICE! read more

Been coming to Cactus Petes for many years on our way from CA to ID, love their pool and buffet. As always the buffet is a intestinal catastrophe waiting to happen, with all the utinsels being used by everyone and then placed back on the food. Told a manager and he agreed, but no change there likely. Called on Friday to tell them we'd be arriving 1pm Sat. Arrived 1pm and told Housekeeping preparing room, we'll call you when it's ready. No call an hour later, I asked and still housekeeping is busy. Two hours later and still no call, but i go to the registgration and surprise, "they just called and your room is ready". Seems like registration and housekeeping don't communicate. If I call ahead and say I'm arriving early maybe that room gets cleaned earlier, but no such luck. Rooms are fine, pool is terrific, but customer service is lacking. Type of place that is maxed out for business so don't need to provide any customer service. From now on we'll stay in Elko and bypass Jackpot. read more

We were on our first family Thanksgiving roadtrip with our 9 month old infant twins when my husband says, "We could take a detour through Jackpot...and stay at a place called Cactus Pete's." With screaming, poopy-diapered babies and four hundred miles to go, I opted to drive another half hour and stretch our trip another night. But with fresh memories of our holiday nightmare at Quality Inn Suites (see review) I couldn't bear to stay another night at a rathole. Maybe I should explain: I prefer swanky hotels with expensive soap and a tub one might consider taking a good old fashioned bath in, even if I never do. I want towels that don't make me feel fat, because they're honest to God bath sized towels. I want a TV that isn't fuzzy or made in the 80's, and yes cable with channels like HGTV and other stuff my husband hates. I like luxury and clean expensive places. That's me. Oh. And. Yet. I'm a new mother of twins who drives a minivan. We arrive and it doesn't look hopeful. My husband goes in to ask for a nonsmoking room and we transport the babies and gear through a smoky casino lobby. Once to our room though, I am surprised...no smoke smell and a totally renovated 5 star metropolitan feel. Comfy bed and über cool lamps and couches. Sort of feels like we are in San Francisco or New York City. And because when you own a minivan and have twins you must perfect the art of pretending, I do. Awhile later I manage to escape the whiny clutches of my brood and go downstairs to gather sustenance. I brave the smoke again and order take out from a place that was pretty good although they forgot the cheese on our cheeseburgers, but whatcha gonna do? On my way back a very friendly front desk employee asked if I was "the mother of the twins"? "Yes." I said. And she proceeded to tell me how hard it must be at their age, how cute they were, how concerned my husband was about the smoke and was everything okay for us? I told her everything was great, but really a half extra star for saying my kids are cute, because those mf'ers were born over 6 pounds each!! If you're coming here for gambling I can't say (but my husband won $75--why he tells me this, one never knows), but for the hotel itself? It's awesome. Comfortable, beautiful, classy and way cheap for what you get. If you're an exhausted mother of multiples who owns a minivan and feels this now symbolizes the loss of youth, come here to get some R&R. read more

If you're looking for Little Vegas, this really isn't it. However, if you're wanting to do some fun gambling and not drive very far (especially if you're from Twin Falls or Boise), Cactus Pete's is the place for you. As soon as you get there, join the Player's Club. They'll send you incentives like free rooms and even if you end up only spending about $20 bucks, the rewards still count. I only go here once or twice a year, and it's worth signing up for. Can't comment on the rooms, as I haven't seen them. The restaurants here are both good - the Plateau Room is of course better quality and a much better experience, but the diner Desert Room costs less, has a larger menu and is quick. My biggest problem with this place is the ventilation. After years and years of smokers, the place reeks of stale cigarettes. I get it, it's a casino - but I hate wearing home other people's second-hand smoke. I'm a frequenter of Vegas and never have this problem. Maybe it's time for some new carpeting, some fresh paint, or better ventilation to freshen the place up? I went today with my family and none of the card games were open - I would go across the street to the Horse Shoe, I know they have cheap Blackjack and the dealers are awesome. The cocktail waitresses are overworked, so expect to wait a bit if you want them to bring drinks to you - but they're nice and they get you your drinks within 10 minutes, sometimes a little over, so make sure you tip 'em. read more

Reviewing casinos is hard because your opinion really depends on whether or not you won cash or lost cash. I was fortunate enough to be a big fat winner at an underwhelming casino in Jackpot, Nevada (about three hours from Boise) called Cactus Petes. My game of choice is usually poker which I am slightly successful at. The poker room at CP's was quite small, I believe it only had 6 or 8 tables. They really only spread no-limit hold-em which was fine by me since this is my best game. I was sat at a 2-5 game after about a half hour of waiting. I bought in with $500. I felt that the 2-5 game here was incredibly weak. The table consisted mostly of regulars who all knew each other and tried to single out the out of towner. There was a lot of joking going on and quite a bit of drinking as well. After about three hours I had built my stack up to $1200, I was getting a lot of action and catching unbelievable cards. I was quite pleased when I received an enormous amount of action after flopping a straight with jack ten in the big blind. A gentlemen to my left had about $3000 dollars while a lady to his left had around $600. I was raised after a small bet, the lady called, and I pushed all my chips in. The guy thought about it for a while and called off almost half his stack! The lady instantly called. Since there was so much money in the pot ($3000) I asked if I could buy insurance from the guy. This was not allowed (he would have refused anyway). He had flopped a set while the girl flopped the nut flush draw. I ended up winning the hand and taking down what was, at the time, the biggest pot of my life. When I cashed out, around $4,000 the poker room manager took a picture of me. I am praying that my face is next to the slot jockeys somewhere in that casino. They also had really nice chips :-). read more

This is a nice, small-town (it only exists for the purpose of gambling just across the Idaho border) casino w/ friendly staff and a decent enough hotel. Our room was big but we had requested non-smoking and when we checked in were told we were getting a non-smoking room but this room had obviously been smoked in. I can accept it's difficult to completely remove the smell as it wafts up from the casino floor and travels into the rooms on clothing and hair but it wasn't just the smell to give it away but the burn holes in the carpet. I hope those people got charged a lot for that. They have cheap tables w/ one deck blackjack which is nice and the dealers were all friendly. We ate in both restaurants - one your typical, lots of variety on the menu and the other an upscale eating experience and both had great food and good service. read more

Great place to stop. The rooms in the tower are really nice. We had to stay in a smoking room and it barely smelled like smoke at all. The room had recently been renovated and the bed was quite luxurious. We ate dinner at the buffet. Quite the selection and pretty good to boot. Breakfast was great at the desert room restaurant. The best part was the biscuit! Yum-o! The casino itself was OK. Smoky, which for a Californian is a little weird, and they could use a bit more ventilation. Plenty of people gambling into the wee hours of the morning. Several other casinos across the street. Pete's even has a courtesy shuttle to take you to those other places! Very nice. Overall, a nice stay for a very reasonable price and good food. Can't ask for much more! read more

Made the spontaneous decision to stay in Jackpot on our way home from Twin Falls. We stayed at the Horseshu as rooms at Cactus Petes were sold out; The Horseshu was a smidge dated, but still pretty nice, we had access to both pools. The pool At Cactus Pete's was AMAZING! large, spacious, and had fountains. There is also a Cabana that sells adult and kid friendly items for drinks; you may also order food. Would totally recommend! It is kid friendly as well, which is really nice for my family. :) read more

We came into town rather late, but the registration staff was very friendly, and very helpful during check-in and making sure we had a late checkout scheduled. The room itself was clean, but it was obvious that the duvet and sham pillows had not been cleaned between visitors. Upon using the bathroom, I found shards of glass scattered around the bathroom floor, even though most of it was swept to the corners and forgotten. Had I been barefoot, I would've been hurt. I ended up cleaning most of the glass shards myself. Tried to watch some tv to take my mind off the glass in the bathroom, and the remote did not work. The tv was stuck on the HDMI source and we could not watch anything. Later that evening while taking a shower, I noticed that the tub wasn't draining properly. By the time I was done, the water had risen to the top of my ankles. We retired to the room after several rather sad games of blackjack, and quickly fell asleep in the comfy bed provided. However, come morning, we were rudely awoken by the housekeeper who obviously didn't get the memo that we requested for a late checkout (that we even confirmed again halfway through our gaming). She would not give up, and kept trying to open our door for several hours (with breaks in between to service other rooms) even though it was clearly locked from the inside. We finally left at the agreed scheduled time, and the housekeeper, who was trying to get in as we opened the door, was rather terse with us. This last interaction left a sour taste in my mouth for our long drive back home in the winter storm. Aside from all that, it was a rather pleasurable stay. read more

My wife and I came out here on a spontaneous trip from Boise to celebrate our 2 year anniversary. We stayed in the granite rooms at Cactus Pete's and we were pleasantly surprised. The rooms were very nice and the granite rooms are located in the same building as the casino as for the tower rooms are a separate building. As mentioned, the rooms were very nice and comfortable. The only negative thing about the granite rooms is that the water pressure was extremely low. When I told hotel staff about this, they had already known this so I am assuming it wasn't just our room but maybe all the rooms? Even though I love hotel showers with great pressure, I think we would stay in these rooms again next time and deal with the low water pressure. We stayed a couple days and tried out their cafe and newly remodeled buffet which was good. All in all, we had a blast and will definitely stay in this hotel again. Oh one more thing, the pool is extremely nice but the jacuzzi is really small as in it may be awkward with one other person if there is one other person in the jacuzzi with you. Beautiful mountain side view on 10th floor; great for seeing the sunset go down past the now snow-covered mountains. Awesome layout: king sized bed, two 50+" tvs, heart shaped jacuzzi, big bar for entertaining, a mini fridge, one and a half bathrooms with a tv in full bathroom. Bed and pillows were pretty comfortable, jacuzzi worked really well with jets for nice massage, Bvlgari soaps and shampoos for a super luxury feel. The buffet, right now, is under renovation. So, unfortunately, we did not get to eat there as we've loved before. The casino, itself, was clean and nice as usual. The only downside was since they were fairly busy, we didn't get our drinks that we ordered before we got returned to our room. Very welcoming employees at check-in. We went to check in and we were told that they have no room for us but we are booked at horseshoe (?) Their sister company across the street. Disappointed and tired we then went across the street to find we need to go back to Cactus Petes (after all this driving) to get checked into the Horseshoe. Wth! So we go back and then they say oh by the way the elevators are broken. My 70 year old mother had to drug her bags up to the 2 story. Just wanted to cry. Welcome to Jackpot, NV. A perfect location for a stop on the way from Seattle to Las Vegas. Room rate was average for a Friday and found out they offer a 10% military discount for the room. GREAT! Definitely stay in the 10-story hotel tower as the room was clean, up-to-date, and the bed was comfortable. The buffet was small, but the food was fresh (not out for hours) and quite good. It had several flavors of gelato (also a military discount). For first-timers, sign up for the slot club and you get some free slot-play. Overall, not a bad experience. The salmon and risotto was probably the best I've ever had, the new York strip and lobster my husband had made him go full carnivore! Huge portions and melt in your mouth flavors. Those rooms were across the busy highway, and not connected to the Hotel/casino at all. We are from out of town, so the Assistant Manager telling us that the properties were related didn't mean squat to us! After taking a look at the room, we came back and told the desk it was unacceptable to be that far from hotel we thought we had booked a room in, and they told us there were no other non-smoking rooms available. I'm starting out at four stars I might talk myself down to three. I've been coming here for 30 plus years. The place is pretty consistent and is made for the locals. The staff is friendly, DeDee is the bomb! Not sure how long she has worked here but she always has a smile and is just pleasant and helpful. The place was a lot better when it was Ameristar but corporations chew up the little guy. The rooms are comfortable but are starting to get worn. Soap dish in the shower is broken, wallpaper pealing and my wife and I got stuck on the elevator for a short time. The food in the buffet was pretty good. I wouldn't drive here for it but it really is only one of two good experiences I found. The other was the pool, nice with plenty of chairs and lounges. Now realizing that is a casino I expect to gamble. That being the case gambling and especially slots should have some return. Cactus Pete's has decided to lower the win percentage to a point where it's no longer gambling. Nobody was winning and the casino floor was relativity quite considering the amount of people. Unless you just want to sit by the pool, this place is now not worth the effort. Vegas is several hundred miles down the road but better time will be had there. Four star when I started, no maybe two. If I get a response from the casino, please don't use the line "we hope the next time you visit...." I'm changing my review to a single star for the following reason; there response to my concerns were milk toast at best, generally indifferent to my observations. I have been a great patron to the place for decades. There response to my concern were truly insulting. read more
