It's unfortunate I have to review this place negatively, but there are some bad points. First we were greeted with a smart ass bartender, who thought he was funny but rubbed us the wrong way throughout our dinner. We ordered steak and chicken, the filets were suppose to be cooked medium but came out rare, and warm in the middle, and the chicken was not fully cooked , and reddish by the bone. We were reluctant to complain as he would of most likely challenged our preference with some smart ass remark. Given the other reviews here I ordered the mixed (grilled and smoked) ribs plate. It's huge! I'd suggest people split most of the entrees 2 ways and get some sides like the baked potato or soup I've seen mentioned. All entrees come with bread basket and salad (resembles cole slaw). The grilled ribs were pretty good like you would make at home but the smoked ribs have the consistency of a jerky. Given I made 2 meals out of this, it is a good bargain but I would have skipped the smoked ribs. As a comparison neither grilled or smoked are anyway as good as a typical Texas smoked beef rib... Talk about your mighty meat platter! Be sure to get here early and with a great appetite! If you get here an hour after the place opens, expect to wait a while before you are seated, however they do recommend you to go across the street and grab a beverage. Went there this afternoon with two friends. Had a fantastic meal. It seemed like a mix of tourists and locals in there. We sat at the bar, and the bar tender was hilarious and a great server. This was the first meal I had in Amsterdam and it did not disappoint. The service was bleh but it fits the atmosphere. Grungy pub feel to the spot. We were quickly seated. The lamb shoulder here is the star. Even cooked at medium well it's a dish you will remember. The pate with bread was something I wanted more of. This is a meat lovers paradise with alcohol. If you're a meat and potatoes type of guy.. then Cafe De Klos is for you. I wanted to eat here again but it was super packed when I came back. It's also open pretty late compared to a lot of the other foodie spots in town. The ribs are also very popular here. There's two different kinds but one is much better than the other. We went here during our stay in Amsterdam because and the high reviews on Yelp as well as recommendations from friends and it was definitely a good place to check out if you're in Amsterdam. When we got there we were seated right away on the patio area. I think the restaurant itself was kind of small so if it gets busy, it'll probably take some time to wait for a table. Our waiter was very casual yet friendly and he showed us some popular items and warned us that we were getting a lot of food. Looking back, we should have just ordered one plate of meat and some sides because it was A LOT of food. The food itself was amazing! I got ribs that were half smoked half regular and it was so juicy and tender. My boyfriend got lamb which was also really good, though I'm not a fan of lamb in general. Tips: 1. First off, the staff is witty and sarcastic, so if you cannot handle that, do not eat here. Period. Don't force yourself to like it otherwise you don't enjoy the food and be upset over the way they talk. Second, you need cash, otherwise it's a 15% service charge if you use plastic. There's an ATM across the street. Third, the portions are huge! So be prepared to togo or better yet, share with a friend while it's pipping hot and delicious. A sharing plate is an extra 7 euros FYI. Fourth, this is great BBQ but not worth more than a 30min wait imo. I heard wait times can be 2hrs+. Coming from the States, we have great BBQ also, so I'm likely slightly biased in this sense. Anyhow, so fortunately, we were able to be seated right away outside. We ordered the smoked ribs, a 24oz filet, and a baked potato. The food also comes with cole slaw and bread. As mentioned, the portions were huge! We wished we took this into account before ordering as we had a lot of leftover, our starving selves could not finish it all. Smoked ribs - amazing. The meat fell right off the bone and it wasn't too smoky at all. I got about 20 large bones, delicious. I was thankful for the bread to eat with it as it was a lot of meat. 24oz Filet - cooked to a perfect medium rare and also delicious. Cole slaw was good and helped cut the meat down as well. This place is always busy but it may not seem like it because they send everyone across the street to have a drink while they put you on the wait list. (Honestly, I think they do that so you can bring your money to their other spot for some drinks.) However, I opted to not do that and just decided to wait outside. And yup, me and my boyfriend were the only ones that didn't feel obligated to go to their cafe/bar for drinks. I didn't care cause I just wanted to eat their ribs!! I guess the host felt weird that we just stood outside so our 40 minute wait turned into 10 minute wait LOL. Lucky us! Inside is kind of dark and pub like. But it smelled good inside since they had an open kitchen where they grilled their ribs! We sat at the bar and we could see where they grilled the ribs. It looked amazing! We got the mixed rib for two people and we were stuffed! I don't know how people can eat a whole thing themselves. The both ribs were good and tender. The salad was nice for a fresh crunch. We were refused service and made fun of because we were Americans. We wanted a drink and everyone at the bar was drinking (it was 10pm) and they repeated over and over that the kitchen was "closed" even though everyone at the bar was drinking. It was clear that they only wanted Dutch people in their bar. I had to assist my friend in the bathroom and they commented that if two people were in the restroom they would "see it on the cameras." I wandered from the North of Amsterdam, around canals, took a ferry, walked over 2 miles sightseeing along the way, to find this gem. When I arrived, as expected, I was told to sit across the street and have a beer while they found me a table. The gentleman was very polite and encouraging that it wouldn't take very long as I was a solo diner that night. He was right. No sooner had I ordered my beer across the street, a fantastic Tripel beer that they allowed me to take across the street to begin my feast. I ordered the regular Spareribs and not the smoked, an order of fancy (or so I thought due to my hunger and misreading) Garlic bread but it was just butter/garlic spread and bread, and another beer while I was there. I was lucky enough to sit at the bar top so the service was fantastic and I was seated next to a nice guy from Uzbekistan (interesting convo..but where here for the food) The ribs were delicious, moist, fall off the bone and seasoned to perfection, not slathered with barbecue sauce etc.. This place has been around 48 years and has a small-ish 1 page menu. There's a reason why- they've perfected everything on it, and you really can't go wrong with anything. They don't take reservations, and the head manager, a sassy thinnish Dutch guy, will tell you as much. They know their food is in high demand, so at this place it's a buyer's market. The "customer is always right" act won't fly here. Be prepared to wait a long time for larger parties during 6-10PM. The best: -The Escargot: Just do it. They even take them out of their shells for you. Dip them in that addictive garlic butter, and then take the bread and ALSO dip that in the garlic butter -The Spare Ribs: The meat falls off the bone, is the perfect level of moist, and the flavor is amazeballs. Make sure to get these. They don't need to be dipped in everything -The bread: They bring you as much as you want, and you can see the freshly-baked baguettes chilling there. I was addicted to dipping this in the garlic sauce they bring with the meat The great: -The Lamb: Great flavor, not too chewy. You will clean the bone on these. I heard a lot about the ribs in Amsterdam and how I had to try them. Having lived in the southern US for most of my life, I know a thing about juicy hickory smoked ribs. I was excited to try these out and see how they stacked up. First off, busy place. I had to wait for a spot in the corner of the bar, but didn't have to wait too long. The first thing I noticed was the energy here! The waiters and workers were cracking jokes and were very active. Love it! When it came to the food tho (and the cost), my experience did not need the standard set by rib cooks in hicktown, North Carolina. The ribs were soft, but lacked the juiciness and the flavor that I'm used to. And in the end the ribs cost me close to 40 USDs. Absolutely delicious! I'm not even a fan of ribs, but I love this place. This is my second time visiting Cafe de Klos. First time was a few years ago. It's just as good still! We showed up around 6-7 PM and our wait was under an hour. I liked passing the time in the sister bar and didn't even finish my beer before we were called to the table. Get the regular ribs, not the smoked ones. The smoked ones are a bit dry (or they were a few years ago). Both of us were really hungry and we made the mistake of getting two portions of ribs. This place was so busy I didn't think I would get in but to my luck again, there was one empty table all the way in the back at around 9pm. In Amsterdam you literally have to make a reservation at most restaurants because you will not get into anything good until past 9-10. Take note of that. There's only a few tables here and the rest is just a wrap around bar top where everyone gathers. Service was good. I seen a lot of complaints in the other reviews about the servers . Yeah, some people could get offended at some of the things they say but I found it quite amusing. I'm a bit of a smart ass myself so it wasn't anything I couldn't handle. There was a comment made, I threw one back, we all laughed and it was all happy days from there. Do yourself a favor and just get the regular ribs, not smoked. I got the mixed platter and while both of the ribs were tasty, the smoked were a bit tough and had way less meat. Regular ribs all the way. Way more meat and fall right off the bone. They were awesome. It comes with coleslaw and bread and I also ordered a baked potato on the side. It came with garlic butter inside that was absolutely delicious. A Dutch beer to wash it all down with and I was good to go. It's a lot of food. I had someone to share it with. There's no way I could have eaten it all by myself. This place is really busy--we had to wait about 1 1/2 hours for our table but they have an agreement with a bar across the street where you can wait comfortably until they come over to get you for your table. This was the first meal my girlfriend and I ate when we arrived in Amsterdam. Absolutely delicious! This is actual BBQ (surprising I know!) We both had the mixed ribs (smoked spare ribs & spare ribs), both were great but the regular spare ribs were fall off the bone juicy! The meals came with bread and a traditional Dutch salad. These are closer to being American sized portions rather than European. We sat and shot the shit and talked about music and traveling with the bartenders/servers for over two hours. They had the normal beers (Amstel, Heineken, etc) but you have to try De Blonde Barbier and De Manke Monnik (ones a blonde and ones a tripel, but both delicious). Went here based on the Yelp reviews. When I walked in and asked about sitting at the bar, one of the guys was pretty rude telling us no, we had to wait. No problem, but our name on the list and they told us to go to the bar across the street and they would come get us. After about 30-45 minutes we got a seat by the window, which wasn't bad but felt tucked away. The rude staff member was back and acted like he was bothered by taking our order. To be fair the other two guys working there were very nice, but the one was clearly having a bad day or just was a jerk in general. We ordered the ribs and smoked chicken. The ribs were huge, but didn't really have much meat on them and were a little tough to eat. The chicken was not much better, it was smoked, so it seemed a little dry and rubbery. I have two pilot friends that visit me regularly and they both told me their whole crew loves this place & it's always one of their top choices for dinner. I had never heard of the place & wanted to give it a try. It's a small place with a very old school dutch wooden interior. We sat at the bar and had our meal. The only thing they offer here is MEAT from ribs to steak to lamb. I opted for the ribs. Not the smoked ribs but the regular ribs. The bartender told me the smoked ones are saltier and not as moist soo duhhh... i got the regular ones. It comes with a side salad (tasty salad with little pieces of pineapple in it) and a basket of bread. You can also order a baked potato. i didn't but saw them and the herbed butter on it looked and smelled yummy. The ribs were amazing!!!! Literally falling off the bone and well seasoned but not over seasoned. I would say at least 50% of the ppl eatting here had ribs. It's a huge amount of ribs that come on your plate. Unless you've got a really healthy appetite or haven't eatten for days... it's easy to split the plate. The staff is also very friendly here and the service was great.
