I was told these Viennese cafes are places to sit and read. However long you wish. I hear the waiters can come off as rude. I heard this is where locals go. All true in my opinion. It was a tight space. They sat me with someone I didn't know. All good. She read. I looked around. Took the place in sipping on my Viennese coffee and eating a pastry. It was quite the experience. I wanted a spot to stop in, relax a little, and enjoy a drink one afternoon, and Cafe Jelinek was right around the corner from my hotel. Perfect. The place is cozy, warm, and has some old-school charm. There were people meeting and chatting, and a couple folks studying and on their computers. I didn't try any cakes (though they were tempting) but I did enjoy a grüner veltliner and a white wine gespritzt. The server seemed a little brusque until he realized I spoke German, but I was seated in a spot where I could easily flag down the server so service was prompt. Went for breakfast with a family of four. A well established coffee house, over 100 years old. There is some wear evident, but that just adds to the authenticity of the experience. They roast their own coffee beans, and the coffee is very good. The service is deferential. They do have English language menus. Their motto roughly is "We don't serve people who are in a hurry", and we found that taking a leisurely attitude benefited us. Great Viennese atmosphere, no tourists evident. read more

It's nice to see so many old school cafes that haven't changed for decades in Vienna (except for the WC's, thankfully). This is one such place. It seems a little shopworn, but that's part of the charm. A few blocks off Mariahilf it's mostly locals with good reasonably priced food & good service to boot. This is one of those really old school coffee houses in Vienna. Think everything that Starbucks is not! Warm, inviting, relaxed, slightly run down, free newspapers, good cheap food and drink and a place you are welcome to spend the whole day just sitting around. The prices are very decent and there is no pressure to finish up and get going. In fact if fast service is something you want then this place is not for you. As the gentleman working there explained, so few people have the time to just relax and wait for their coffee nowadays. Its all go go go..... So if you want somewhere very welcoming to park off for an hour or two catching up on the news or catching up with friends then this is the perfect place to come. read more

This place is such a gem. Why don't we have a place like this in NYC?? Totally retro decor - only bcoz nothing has been updated. Faded wallpapers and very old furniture are the very charm ppl like to come here beside good coffee and friendly ppl. You'd better to come before 11am when it can get full inside. The regular scrambled eggs were good but my ham and cheese omelet was slightly over cooked. It was still ok, I ate it all. The ambiance of the cafe made the visit enjoyable. Certainly not as glamourous as any of the Konditerei's in Vienna- it is still a great place to grab a bite and have a chat. This became without any doubt one of my favorites cafés in Vienna! Right after passing the doors, I felt like time had stopped one century ago... The lay out is comfy and old fashioned, with lots of wood furniture and old armchairs (not always of the same hight!), which completely matched with the spirit of this place. I felt at ease in here right away. And in bonus: the smoking area is in the back of the café, so you can spend a nice moment without having to breath any smoke! :) The waiters look professional and quite proud, but are actually very friendly and attentive to their customers. As any good café local should, their coffees, mélanges, teas and other drinks taste just right. They also have a great offer in traditionnal cakes and appetizing breakfast, which will let you dream at first by reading it, please your nostrils by smelling it and then make your stomach very happy by tasting it! The first time I came, we were suppose to stay for one hour and ended enjoying 3 hours in this place. And we were not the only one! Only deception: as almost every traditionnal Viennese Cafés, they don't have soy milk. read more

This review is for 3.5 stars. Cozy cafe for locals, hipsters and visitors. The service was extremely slow - there was one server for the entire cafe. Took us 20 min to wait for the bill. The food: - goulash (large - is a pretty big plate so I would recommend sharing or getting a small) - pretty good croissant considering Vienna - my husband had the cheese toasts and yogurt - he liked his plate. I'm surprised by the positive reviews and comments about the friendly staff. We must have picked the WRONG day to go here. It was a slow drizzly Sunday morning. We eventually were acknowledged by a male employee who hustled us to the table directly next to the bathroom. We were given menus. The place is rundown comfortable, and the menu seemed promising, but we were not given a chance to find out. We waited and waited. We watched others walk in, get seated, have their orders taken, and get served. At that point we decided to leave when the man came to us with more menus. I'm not sure what was going on. Were they understaffed? Was the waiter uncomfortable with our English? Who knows? We will be returning to Vienna at the end of the week and we'll give another cafe a try, but not this one. read more

A cafe that attracts mainly locals. This is definitely an authentic cafe that is off the beaten path in Vienna. It is not the best coffee I have ever had, nor is it the best atmosphere or interior decorating. There is a reason that this place has been open for so long - it definitely has some charm. I'm starting to think that stories of people relaxing at coffee shops with a book, just having a coffee or a beer are myths. Because usually when I try to do that, I get dirty looks (at the very least) from the waiters. Granted, I usually drink bottled water or juice but considering that it's roughly the same price and I tip generously - so what's it to them?! Anyway, here's what happened: I was sitting there reading a book one Sunday afternoon when a couple walks in. The place is full and I overhear the waiter say to them: "Well, it's stupid how that sir is sitting over there", looking directly at me. (I was sitting at one of the smallest tables, barely suitable for two people) This made me feel guilty, so I thought I should order another drink, to sort of pay for the spot that I occupy. After doing so, I hear one waiter say to the other "He wants what?!" Now, I found all of this so upsetting that I researched the costs of running a cafe and calculated how much I would have to earn per customer per hour to at least break even. After doing that calculation, I could see their point. I'm not one to often go out anyway but I guess in the future, I will only do so if I see that a place it at least half empty (like Blueorange - they rarely seem busy). Still, I find the rudeness unacceptable. If the business can't take it, they should politely (!) ask people who don't consume enough to leave. Their regulars apparently aren't much different. There's this one grumpy older man who is there almost every evening who was also there on that busy Sunday. When a couple asked whether they could sit with him (Oh by the way - in my little story above, two different strangers sat with me at the table throughout 1-2 hours. No big deal for me sharing that narrow space...), he emphatically responded "This table is reserved for me!", pointing at the "reserved" sign. They were visibly shocked by his aggressive reaction and left the place. After which he walked over to a different table at which apparently a buddy was sitting and said in a mocking voice "The nerve... These people are never here and think that a table is reserved for them." But... the seating is comfortable, the interior design charming (although the crooked picture frames always make me cringe), the service usually fast, the toilet clean and I know of at least one nice person who used to like coming here, hence the 3/5. read more

Very relaxed and laid back Cafe, you can take a cup of tea and stay for hours reading, talking, drawing or doing whatever you like. It's not a coinsidence that the poster at the bar says: 'If you are in a hurry, you won't be served'. Comparing to many other cafes that make you feel a guest, Jelinek's atmosphere makes you feel at home. Charming place with delicious cakes. I had a melange and an espresso (need to stock up on caffeine ) as well as a poppy seed cake.... Tried the chocolate cake my friend ordered and it was pretty good too, the poppy seed ones was great and we both preferred it. If you want to step out of your comfort zone and try something Classic go for the poppy seeds!!! Would go back again when I will be visiting Vienna. read more

The make it or break it factor for me when it comes to cafes (other than the coffee itself) is usually the atmosphere. I was looking for a good cafe to spend some time reading on a Saturday when I found Café Jelinek nearby. It's a hidden gem. I arrived around 2 PM and the place was packed, but I managed to find a little place to myself. I was there to read a book I had been meaning to get to. The server was welcoming and brought me the English menu, and when I was confused she also explained how seats could be reserved for guests ahead of time. I ordered a Weiner Melange. Maybe this is the American in me coming out, but I was hoping the serving size would be a bit bigger. The coffee was delicious, and later when I ordered an Apple Strudel, that was delicious as well. The atmosphere of the cafe is amazing. It never got too loud and the place is more popular with locals than tourists, so it's very authentically Viennese. The cafe's interior is also very authentic, vintage, and every minute of the 4 hours I spent there was worth it. read more

4.8E for an espresso (Mocha) and a slice of chocolate nut pound cake. Neither were mindblowing. The cake was somewhat dry and tasteless, and could have come from the supermarket, although it looked homemade. The cafe got the job done for being a place to finish one's German homework and to get reading done, but there is no wireless, so that is a downside. I'll admit the place is cheaper compared to other Viennese establishments. read more
