This place has gone from poor to awful service. I've come here several times and the service has always been bad. I only return when friends insist on going here. Can you imagine a restaurant with half the number of waiters needed and those waiters not being trained to do their job? Well, come on over to Cafe Angelique for customer abuse. This place has a reputation for being the trendiest place in the area so people come here like lemmings to the sea. If they'd realize the Emperor has no clothes, they'd never come here again. Acoustics are awful so it's always noisy inside. The service has always been lousy but this week it hit a new low. The owners are out to make a killing so they had half the number of waiters you'd need and those waiters were young kids who had not been trained to do their job. Outside they've always had tables serviced by waiters. Well no more. Again, it has to be the greed factor. They don't wait the outdoor tables. About to sit down for lunch outside on a gorgeous, warm day we were warned by people sitting there that there is no service. Oh joy - you get to go inside, wait an extremely long time for your food to be ready and then you can pay for it and take it outside yourself. My sandwich came burnt. Ciabatta bread is so much nicer when it's not burnt. We had to remind the waiter after 30 minutes to see if the sandwiches we ordered were ready. I can say there is one thing they do quick - pick up payment for a totally forgettable food experience and truly horrible service. Why this place is popular is beyond me but, again, they don't realize the Emperor has no clothes. Some day they will. Do yourself a huge favor - skip this place. read more

OK. I feel no guilt in writing this review because I have given this place too many chances to get it right. Today is the last time I will ever come here. I will not even get coffee here anymore (even though the coffee is pretty good). The food, service, and prices are all wrong. Something is screwy when the server tells you she feels like she is in battle with the "kitchen" and that is why items come out wrong, slow, or not at all. I put kitchen in quotes because hardly anything is cooked here. Most, if not all food is premade, so forget most custom requests. Top all this off with high prices and you are all set for a bad experience. Final note, the vegetarian sandwich is no longer made as advertised. It breaks my heart to write this review because for many years Cafe Angelique was a little oasis of Europe(Tel Aviv really) in a sea of Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts. It was our top choice to meet friends and enjoy great espresso drinks and top notch pastries AND friendly attentive service. After moving from nearby Closter to Rockland county I still preferred to make the half hour drive to Angelique than go anywhere else short of Manhattan. But something changed in the last year or two, I suspect the place was sold to new owners because there was an immediate and noticeable turn over in staff...for the worse. I'm writing this review after three consecutive disappointing visits so let it not be said I didn't give the place a chance. On the surface the place pretty much looks the same and the pastry counter seems to carry the same gourmet selections as ever albeit with a heftier price tag. But gone are little things that make a cafe a place one wants to call home. Lovely college age waitresses who were bubbly and friendly have been replaced by men whose look and demeanor lead one to believe that their last job was at a low end pizza joint. I won't bore you with the details of each of our last bad experiences there but I will say that the lack customer service is consistent. I came in at 7:54 am, not knowing the cafe opened at 8am. After standing outside for a while while the young brunette waitress saw us, she didn't come out to serve us or even say they aren't open. My mom knocked on the window and the lady finally came out and said in a rude tone "why are you knocking on the window?" We said because we wanted to be seated. She replied that they opened at 8 and my mom asked what time it was- the lady said "7:57am" and went back inside. There were a million set, open tables outside and she refused to acknowledge us. She didn't even need to open a door to let us in. She couldn't have seated us THEN done whatever she so desperately needed to do for the next 3 minutes before 8am? Went there with my family friend's for after a group lunch. It was crowded and the cashier was a bit annoyed that we ordered for 8 people (drinks and deserts). So she was a bit rude and took a long tome to swipe my credit card and ignored us for 10 mins while waiting for the approval. Gave us a dirty look when I tried to remind her that she still had my credit card. She then ordered us outside because we have too many people in frontof the cashier in the room. I did not appreciated her attitude after spending over $70 and really embarassed my guests. I used to go there when the boro had the summer concerts and would stop by after our meals at the boro (like TPR). What a hidden gem!! I stopped in to get coffee before going to the movies across the street. I was expecting just a coffee shop but it is so much more!!! A restaurant that looked to be adorable, a coffee shop, and a full bakery counter!! The coffee was served hot and strong! I was very pleased. Cafe Angelique is a favorite for our family. My wife and daughter love the mozzarella sandwich and my son goes crazy for the french toast. Regardless of which meal the clock dictates should be served I usually go for the malawach...primarily feta, hard boiled egg and a spicy chili paste served on a Middle Eastern bread that is like a pita made from phyllo. My mouth waters at the thought of it. The almond croissant is also heaven. Not too sweet...just perfect. All of the various coffees are delicious but if you are jonesing for decadence go for the Italian Chocolato. Time stands still as you savor this thick, hot chocolate with a dollop of vanilla ice cream swimming in it. Oh boy... The service can be a little slow because the waitstaff is young but they're all very nice and you should really slow down when eating food this good. They sometimes have live jazz, which is a nice treat. Finally, the cafe is located in a beautiful, old train station. Highly recommended! read more

Let's be real....you don't come to Café Angelique for the food, the laid-back servers, or the luke-warm coffee. This former railroad station just happens to be one of the most charming places to sit and enjoy the company of friends, especially in the beautifully decorated inside. But after today's experience, I was so disheartened to see that the manager has even taken away even that small aesthetic pleasure by blasting horrible, loud, thumping music so that you actually had to shout to carry on a conversation. I come here only when it's the last option I have. Hence, for over 4 years of living in Tenafly, I have dined at this place less than 5 times. The last time I tried their food, which was 4 years ago, the first time I came to this place. I forget what we ordered, but it was just all too bad. Last time I was here because the city had a nice outdoor concert right outside of this cafe. We were dying of thirst so we went in to get a quick drink. I don't like it when my drinks are at all sweet, so I asked the waitress if they can leave out the sugar. I was told that almost all drinks on the menu, with the exception of coffee, already had sugar in them. I ordered the iced chai tea latte and mint lemonade and, as expected, all too sugary. Drank half and tossed out the rest. A good reminder to self that this is not a good place for anything. read more

You wouldn't notice this joint by drive by. Cafe Angelique used to be a waiting area for the train that passed through this town. Now its an adorable place to have delicious desserts with tea or coffee. The tea is fresh, the desserts are fantastic, and they do serve food here but the ambiance doesn't call for dining to me. Despite the Yelp reviews, from an architectural perspective my interest was piqued. Very quaint ambiance. Had the nutella dream sandwich (brioche toast with nutella, bananas & strawberries). It was yummy but how does one make nutella taste bad? I also sampled the quinoa salad & it was good. Ok this is healthy and tasted good so...Yes it is overpriced for what you get and the no refills on coffee is a downer, but the service was prompt and friendly. I just moved into the area and was thrilled at discovering the quaint town of Tenafly. Cafe Angelique stood out immediately because of it's architecture. Though the vibe is great, and the salad's were worth the trip, the service was horrendous. Extremely slow, inattentive... I've definitely had better paninis, but the homemade guac was yummy. Gelato was okay. I've been back 3 times now (mostly because I really want it to be as good as it looks). Look, if you're looking for a great place to sit and sip on something, people watch, have a decent salad or a european breakfast (coffee and something from the bakery), whilst reading the paper... Cafe Angelique is great. I will say the lemonade with fresh mint gets high marks. Some weekends the fam drive from Edgewater to Tenafly for the salmon bagel sticks, croissants, blueberry scones, authentic cafe ambiance & the great attentive service. Cafe Angelique caught my eyes with its beauty. I thought it was train station but when I got inside of the place, a little Europe was there. Cute display of desserts and energetic baristas not to mention the quality you get. Coffee is good. tried most of them, you can't go wrong with any of them. Lemonade, blended drinks and other beverages are more than mediocre. Loved Borechas ! I tried it as my Israeli friend recommended. Best breakfast/lunch ever! Very refreshing, nutrient-balanced and reasonable price, of course. My craving for Borechas kicks in sometimes then I run to Tenafly. lol I had it at Bleeker St's as well, quantity, quality-wise, Tenafly's is better but sevice-wise I loved the city's. The reason I took 1 star out of this place is SERVICE. You should not expect your waitresses running for your food. Sometimes when you're lucky, you don't have to say anything twice but most of the times just RELAX. lol Hummus is pretty ok but not as authentic as you'd expect. I love Cafe Angelique and wish it was around years ago. It's a perfect re-invigoration of a space that is arguably the very heart of the community, in place and in spirit: the old train station. I like to sit here with tea in the beautiful high-ceiling dining room and look out the window across the train tracks, or wander over to the old route map spanning the front of the cafe, and think about the many sons and daughters of Tenafly who took the train seeking work, adventure and romance -- and those who took the train en route to serve our country, and perhaps never came back. As someone who grew up in Tenafly, it's a sacred space and I'm grateful to be able to spend time there. On a more practical note, I'm a big fan of Cafe Angelique's baked goods. The strawberry-peach muffin is a current favorite. I find the servers to be polite even when overwhelmed. And it's always a fascinating people-watching spot. read more

Did you know they have great jazz EVERY WED NIGHT? These JAZZ DOCTORS PERFORM even though the venue owner is too cheap to pay them or advertise! What's with that?! More people would come if word got out (and the bottom line undoubtedly would improve) . The food ranges from high priced to reasonable, cute waitresses serve and outdoor eating during Summer make this a great spot to being a date or the family. Its the only nighttime game in Tenafly where live music can be enjoyed under the stars with a park with Stage right across the street in case you're possessed by the Thespian Spirit and feel stimulated by the music of a 7 piece band playing mellow jazz; sometimes with vocals :) read more

I've come here on occasion, and it's not bad. Some things are eh, other things are pretty good, and all things are pretty pricey. Service is average. There are times we get things quick, other times we have to flag down a server or wait a bit. No complaints, as most brunches are more for the company than the food anyways. As far as food... Herbed Cream Cheese & Blueberry Jelly - Comes with any order that is served with toast. I know, it's not even a real menu item. But it really is very good. Deluxe Omelet - Your average omelet! Does not disappoint. It's good. Turkey Bacon - The consistency is more like fried, thinly sliced ham; it's not crispy. This is the only place I've seen it made this way. Pretty tasty and doesn't feel as fatty. Belgian Waffles - My favorite. I'd describe more as dense vs. fluffy, but when I say "dense," I mean that in the best possible way. Just try order it. It's really, really good. The Beverages... Tea - Their teas are HUGE fyi. Really, it's like 2 mugs worth, so prepare to drink. Iced Cafe Latte - Strong and delicious. I asked for a side of simple syrup so I didn't have to drink grainy sugar. The ambiance is really the most standout aspect. The food was at least three stars but the service was so annoying for me it bumped this place down to two. The room was not crowded and there were two servers for the room, which seemed adequate. The food came out quickly and correctly, so there was no problem with the kitchen. The main problem was getting the servers to check up on you or get you the check. I could understand if they were being run ragged because they were short staffed, but the two servers spent most of the night gossiping together. It was annoying to try and fail constantly to catch the server's eye. On top of this the desserts are overpriced. The inside of the place itself is lovely, if a little chilly. The high ceilings and the decor are charming. Maybe this place is better when there is someone to police the servers, but if you go at off hours, expect to sit around a lot waiting for someone to notice you. read more

The interior is very nice and appealing. I ordered their waffles but they brought french toast instead. So it wouldnt go to waste, i didnt complain and thought it was yummy anyways. Its not your typical french toast, it was more pastry like but equally delicious. The server seemed to be off their game that day, but thats understandable, since 1) it was 9am on sunday morning and 2) she's a human-being, everyone has those tired days. What I was really disappointed was with the coffee, which is why i gave them four stars. I ordered caramel macchiato it tasted like burnt coffee. and after they made it, you can see they forgot the caramel part and drizzled it in on top of the foam (as seen in the picture). Despite it's quaint esthetics, Cafe Angelique serves visibly rotten fruit and does not give a damn when it's brought to their attention. This weekend my wife and I dined there for brunch and ordered fruit salad. The strawberries were visibly, obviously, unavoidably rotten, utterly discolored, a dark stained sepia brown that one simply could not avoid noticing. We're not just talking about two strawberries, but virtually *ALL* of them, an entire bowl. What kind of place serves visibly brown, rotten fruit to its customers? When we brought this to the attention of the waitress, she made a perfunctory apology, but she didn't take the dish off the cheque. Seriously??? Not only did the Angelique serve us a bowl of grossly decayed fruit, but they still charged us for it when we brought it to their attention. And that wasn't the only inappropriate, incompetent aspect of their service. They are not only slovenly and incompetent. They clearly don't care. read more

Yay! I met up with a friend for tea and desserts here on a Sunday afternoon. I got a latte and scone while she opted for some Earl Grey tea and a flourless chocolate cake. The decor was cute and the staff was friendly but not as attentive as we would have liked. Just had breakfast at one of the many al fresco tables. This allows people to bring the canine members of the family, which I think is nice. The food was good and the service was friendly. The menu was expansive, offering a nice variety of items. I had a waffle which was nice and moist as well as dense. My complaints are as follows: The waffle normally comes with sliced bananas and strawberries. They were out of bananas. Suggestion. Send someone to the Stop and Shop, across the street, to buy some. Second complaint. When you charge me $2.50 for a cup of coffee, I expect free refills. Not the case here. This is inexplicable in today's restaurant experience. This isn't Starbucks. read more

More than the food, the novelty of the restaurant within an old train car is the attraction here. Settled in the middle of a small collection of Tenafly boutiques, shops, and cafes, Cafe Angelique livens things up with a look-at-me flare without saying "look at me." Lunching here with The Gee Ef, the ambiance is pleasantly vibrant. It's bustling but not crowded, just enough people to affirm you of your lunchtime decision. Service is decently nice but nothing over the top. We had the Spicy Chicken Sandwich ($7.95) and the Mango and Goat Cheese Salad ($10.95). Both done well but I can't say they were exquisite or anything like that or the other. Brother. There's a to-go cafe within the train car but separated from the restaurant portion of the place by a door. Cupcakes are delicious here. I would come back again but their website also states there are two NYC locations as well which I would probably be curious enough to check out. read more

Cute place to hang out in Tenafly. There is another one in NYC...greenwich or so. I like this one's atmosphere more though. You can sit in an old fashion train station (really was on) and enjoy your amazing salads, paninis, etc. The waitresses I think are in HS? This is a great place to get treats since there are so many hand crafter beautiful treats and a wide variety of drinks to choose from. Prices are about the same as anywhere else that a nice brunch place or not a huge chain. It depends when you go since if the weather is good it might be super packed inside and with the outdoor seating. I don't really see this place as a dinner place but for lunch, meeting up with friends, lunch date with family/etc, great spot! read more

This place was just absolutely precious. The fact that you can get breakfast all day long is great! It made me feel like I was in a café in Europe, it felt cozy and the overall ambience was great too. I will definitely be coming back.
