They have a small, but simple menu. It's nothing like your obnoxiously mile-long menus at your typical Jersey diners. The breakfast options include pancakes, french toast, omelets, and waffles. Lunch options include burgers, sandwiches, wraps, and salads. We were pleasantly surprised by the prices! They are verrrrrrry reasonable. I only came here for one thing and one thing only.... PANCAKES!!! I thought they were going to have a lot more options (kinda like Brownstone Pancake Factory), but they stuck to the basics. I ordered the Berry Merry Pancakes($11.49) with a side of sunny side up eggs ($1.75). My plate came out with four fluffy pancakes topped with strawberries, blueberries, and whipped cream. My little self was able to finish the whole plate. I would rate them a 3 out of 5. They were just your average pancakes you can probably make at home with fresh fruits. My +1 ordered two scrambled eggs, home fries, turkey sausage, toast, and two blueberry pancakes. He was satisfied with his meal. No complaints. Local diner, local feel and decent food. In what seems like forever, it just kept calling and calling me every time I was in the Maywood business district, but, not once did I give into temptation (especially with Pancake in their name) .... until a random Wednesday early afternoon. We strolled into what we thought was going to be a relatively empty restaurant on a very warm and nice August summer weekday, but boy were we wrong. This diner/pancake house was buzzing, mostly with the elderly from the community, but it was chirping. Thankfully, even though the restaurant doesn't look that big inside, there were still quite a few tables available for us to sit down at despite the action. First off, love the decor. The restaurant was clean, the paint was fresh-looking and it just had a very comforting home feel to it. Second, service was excellent throughout. Our waitress was attentive, came by to check on us when she could and the food was served very, very promptly. As for the menu, as the name suggests, pancakes are the star of the show. Yes, they serve other breakfast items like waffles, French toast, breakfast sandwiches, skillets, benedicts and omelets and also some lunch too, but the menu was not overwhelming like most diners. It's relatively simple with a heavy emphasis on the pancakes, so it boded really well for a professional menu item flip flopper like me. My better half ended up ordering the Huevos Rancheros and I went with the Strawberry Shortcake Pancakes, which apparently, according to the waitress, was by far the most popular pancakes. Verdict? Good food. Solid. I tried a bit of the Huevos Rancheros and, first, I loved the presentation. It was plated very neatly and it wasn't a huge dish, but looked delectable. I especially loved the Chorizo and the flavor of it. The home fries/potatoes and eggs were good too, but nothing out of the ordinary. As for the Strawberry Shortcake Pancakes, I have to admit, I'm a bit of a pancake snob. I've had my fair share of pancakes in life from renowned pancake restaurants in NYC like Clinton Street Baking Company (at least a dozen times), Sunday in Brooklyn and Cafe Luluc and those are the measuring sticks in my life for pancakes. And I really wanted to love Maywood Pancake House, but, unfortunately, I wasn't a huge fan of it. My wife thought it was OK, but it was way too sweet for my tastebuds. The portion was very generous with 4 huge pancakes, but the pancakes were crumbly. Every time I stuck my fork into it to grab a bite, it would just fall apart and turn into crumbs, so I didn't like that. It needed to be more solid and less sweet. There was way too much chocolate sauce on it too. Like I said, it's a nice comfortable, cozy restaurant. Great service by the staff and loved the atmosphere inside. Unfortunately, I was split on the food. The Huevos Rancheros was a winner for me, but the Strawberry Shortcake Pancakes were a real bummer and if you're going to be called "Pancake House" the pancakes have got to rock. I'm a firm believer that having kind waitstaff can tip an average food experience into an amazing one. When you have great waitstaff at a place that's already got solid food, that's when you have the kind of magic you find at spots like Maywood Pancake House. Every time I've been here, the waitresses and hostess have always been incredibly friendly, patient, and welcoming. You feel like you're being welcomed to a small-town local spot even though there are 2 other locations aside from this Maywood one. I got blueberry pancakes, which were exactly the way I wanted them. Fluffy, absorbed the butter well, just exactly what I wanted. I also got a side of eggs, home fries, and turkey sausage. The turkey sausage was not my favorite but the eggs were cooked well and the home fries hit. It's all just solid stuff, which is what you want from breakfast (in my opinion). My husband got the Wrangler skillet but subbed turkey sausage for bacon. I was so fixed on my own food that I didn't even steal a bite of his (unheard of). Nj is known for its diners, and this one does diners justice. I always get a hot chocolate with whipped cream and it is made with water but I appreciated that the drink was extra chocolatey it made you forget the base was water. Now the kids menu items could feed an adult! They are not stingy with servings and the bacon was crisp! No limp bacon was observed here! Stopped by Maywood Pancake House with some friends as we were making our way upstate. We arrived at around 10:30am on a Saturday morning and had to wait a little bit before getting seated. It was a packed house! They have classic American breakfast options and a ton of vegan friendly dishes, which my vegan friendly greatly appreciated. We had a very disappointing experience today and feel the manager should be aware. Our server, Mila, never once checked on our table. We had to flag her down twice just to ask for basic things like coffee and water. Even then, water was not provided for everyone, and my coffee had something floating in it. When the food arrived, everything was cold--the eggs, toast, and pancakes. Only the sausage was warm. For a breakfast spot, that's unacceptable. To make matters worse, when we asked for more coffee as Mila was dropping off the check, she looked visibly annoyed, which made us feel uncomfortable. Between the poor service, the cold food, and the lack of attention to guests, this visit was incredibly disappointing. Not a favorite. It's a low key, dinner style breakfast place. We went there because they have a good amount of gluten free options including gluten free pancakes, waffles (although not today) and bread for eggs. Service was good. It wasn't amazing, but I don't have any complaints there. It wasn't the reason I didn't like it. The main reason for the lower score is the food itself. I got poached eggs with avocado, tomatoes and potatoes on toast. Hubby got the gluten free (vegan) pancakes. My meal was dry and flavorless. There were no sauces, no spices or anything else to give it flavor. Also no consideration of how the ingredients fit together, if at all. It was one of those situations when I regretted going out because I could have done better myself, at home. Imagine dry, cold gluten-free bread, with plain avocado, a dry tomato and dry eggs... and you will get the idea. I also got orange juice and I am not sure what was in it (it tasted ok...) but it made my stomach hurt. That's not something that happens to me often. The pancakes were similar. The dominant flavor was that of baking soda - not something to look forward too. It ended up being fairly pricey for what it was (and how bad the food tasted). It was more expensive and worse quality than my regular go to place. Most of the clientele seemed local. It was out of the way for us and we came to try something new... and we did. This is a place that I've been going long before it became made with pancake house and it was taken over by a diner owner from either Rutherford or East Rutherford. I don't remember exactly but when they open the doors after converting from a little luncheonette called Rick's. I continue to be a customer Until today. I would try to get in there at least once a week and many times multiple times a week and just being a customer that long I always thought it must be a good place to work because I always saw the same girls working not all extremely young but not old old either. Today I walked in and I see new faces again and I'm sitting and I'm talking to the girl who serve me and I just brought up the conversation of how when you see constant start over a business. There's gotta be something going on and many times it's the employees But then other times it's because the place isn't either paying well or there's another factor that could be it's not a happy place to work. It's not a good place to work. So after a while, I saw a woman that was there for quite a few years and I noticed that she was there I always pleasantly say hi. She says hi. I talk to her at the register when I'm paying and then I'm explaining to her it's it's kind of funny noticing that Many many boys that were there from the beginning were there for 2 to 3 years and they weren't there the last six or eight months, aren't there either and the people out of there now are new one lady came over to me and said she had come from the diner that the owner owns and she was the oldest woman now probably in her late 50s or 60s, so I said to the manager after quite a few people in my time it's gotta be an underlying issue. It's not so much to pay that be something with internal issues to have that kind of high turnover because if the employees were in good employees, they wouldn't last 2 to 3 years and then again employees can develop bad habits, but when it's so many employees in a turnover, that's something that is internal and that is not good for a business restaurant. Businesses can survive that because they just don't care they just rotate. There's always a body to replace a body, but that doesn't make it a quality place Well, when I started speaking to the manager in depth about the situation, she abruptly said I got work to do and I'm sorry I can't talk and the place was nearly dead maybe six customers in the whole place so that manager is more than likely the problem and I can tell you knowing Latino people like I do because my wife is Latino that lady seems like she hires and fires like she said she does and she hires and fires based on personality and not work accomplishments. As a customer for as long as the place is open, I won't be returning because they don't deserve my money if they are gonna treat their workers that way and I'm sure in Maywood, you've got very stupid customers that come into the place they could care less as long as you get their food and shove it in mouth, but I just won't participate bring my money there. I'll go someplace like the Saddlebrook diner or something, but if the owner is worth his salt, then he will be reading this review because it's a damning one it's a shame. I really enjoyed going there and meeting people that I knew from time to time and having a decent plate of food and even the food has dipped quite a bit in the last six or eight months. read more
