Not what I was expecting. I love hole in the wall places and when you are only serving Beignets and coffee, one then expects it to be top notch. The smell of old oil is over whelming. Let me first say that this is not New Orleans. If you are looking for a fantastic beignet, Cafe Du Monde is only about 2 hours away. I live in the area and happened to be on Ft. Morgan Road in Gulf Shores, AL and I saw this place. Loving beignet and Cafe au lait, I just had to stop in and check it out. The atmosphere is pretty plain, almost sterile. The very few decorations they have are beach themed, which makes sense. There was no hint of trying to tie in the cajun/french connection, which seemed unusual and a missed opportunity. They offer all types of coffee and tea including my beloved Cafe au lait. As far as beignets, they have plain and filled. The filling choices are vanilla and lemon (pudding). The sign said they were pudding fillings, so the reviewer who complained about them being like pudding... well what can I say. I was in a hurry, so I ordered a dozen to go, and a separate single order (3) to go as well. Being very familiar with beignets, and the fact that they are covered with powdered sugar, I knew it would not be wise to try to eat any on the road. Especially this time of year with all the beach traffic. I sat down and took out my three. Like I said, this is not Cafe du Monde, this is not New Orleans, and well these were not beignets. At least, not like those. These were much more toothsome (I was trying to use a "foodie" word instead of dense. Really like a cross between a yeast and cake doughnut. They had a very nice sourdough type flavor to them. In fact, I liked it, it just was not like most beignets I have. These were more like the ones you make at home from the box of mix you get from the grocery store, and you overmix, or overwork the dough. Again, I liked the flavor and did not mind the texture. So, I was interested to see what these would be like after driving one hour (to go 20 miles - thanks tourist. Seriously we do love you!) Needless to say, they had not changed in a favorable way. More "toothsome" for sure. On the other hand, my family ate them all up with out saying a word. The coffee was ... not Cafe du Monde, and not really hot. Just not strong like it should be. Would I drive that far, just to go to this place. if we were in the area, and we wanted to stop and eat some cake/yeast donuts with a really good sourdough flavor, yes I might stop by again. This is a good place for Beignets. Not fancy or overwhelming. It's a local place and it's all local and straight forward. Don't expect any glamour The beignets were fine. Compared to the ones in New Orleans, these are less yeasty and more on the pillow-y cake side.They are as delicious as fried dough can get though. Surprisingly they are not too oily, and they don't have a weird oil flavor either that you can sometimes get (think carnival food). Hot fluffy pillows covered in a mountain of powdered sugar. YUM! I typically go here and get some to go. The actual store is not impressive. It looks like it used to be something else. I don't know. I don't ever have the desire to stay and experience sitting at a cheap table in what looks like a tiny DMV with a dusty display case in the front (NOT filled with food of any sort). I never turn down desert nor do I leave a desert sitting out but unfortunately today was a first. Mind you we had drove to the perdido key location and couldn't find it so we traveled to the orange beach location. Don't waste your time! First off they only take cash and their atm didn't work on the two tries we tried it, my BF had to walk to the atm at the nearby grocery store. We got an order of the plain and filled. Okay on to the beignets they were very disappointing literally just fried flavorless dough on the plain and no real inside like literally was hollow, and the filled ones I was told was filled with a vanilla custard it actually was a thick vanilla like pudding that tasted spoiled basically with a hint of a fouled lemon kick. Stopped on a Sunday and tried their regular and cream filled beignets. The regular powder sugar beignets were exceptional and the cream filled ones were a little too rich for our liking. We would've rated this five-stars however their bathroom was filthy and just not that day filthy. As I'm writing this I am thinking maybe we should have given it three stars for the dirty bathroom. My family has been coming to Gulf Shores-Orange Beach for years and have never had a problem when we've come to this Cafe Beignet location until today. My sister, niece and I walked in at 11:30 (they close at 12) and the woman at the front said take out only - we were totally ok with that. We were going to order a dozen and an older man in the back seemed very irritated. Since they were closing soon, I said we would be fine to go ahead and take what all they had made so they didn't have to make any more - he seemed mad we even came in to order anything anyways. The man was extremely unprofessional and rude and condescendingly told us to "land a plane and make a decision"... we ended up deciding to go with a dozen since we had a larger group at home and they only had 6 made. When our order was ready he told us "here is your dozen or 6 or whatever" - such a jerk. His attitude was disgusting and we felt so embarrassed for the woman in the front. read more
