Great food BUT NOT COVID SAFE! I was there recently. I walked in and there was a couple ordering at the buffet with no mask, not even around their neck. That couple should have been required to put masks on or leave the store.The server had a black mask around her neck with her nose and mouth completely uncovered. No thanks. I walked out. If it's like that in the front of the store, how unsafe is it in the back part of the kitchen? Considering I stop by often, I expect they get my order right. And sour cream is not an acceptable substitute for kajmak. I asked for kajmak, paid the upgrade charge but received sour cream in my to-go container. Not what I wanted to find when I got home, ready to pounce on an order of fresh cevapi! Also, the meat isn't quite as good as some of Beograd's Balkan competitors and I wish their bread wasn't quite so big... it's very fluffy and stands taller than most lepinja. I give 5 stars to beograd cafe. Actually , it reminds me alot of the delicatessans from Beograd Serbia. Basically, its a lounge, cafe,restaurant, and deli all rolled into one. Unfortunately parking is a pain because of its location in the city but you will find enough meter parking down the block. They make good cevapcic, burek, kajmak, and pljeskavica. You will also find a good drink menu as well. They even have good ajvar too which is homemade stuff. Most of the stuff they make is homemade. For the first timer not knowing food from serbia-croatia-bosnia. Try the burek and chevap. Chevap is good with a beverage like beer and also pljeskavica . Pljeskavica is a sort of a flat burger with alot of onions and spices. thats also good with beer. ! read more

Part of the reason I moved to the Chicagoland area is because it has the second largest ex-Yu community after Belgrade. I've spent quite a few years learning the language and going to the Balkans, so it is nice to find places in the US where you can get a taste of that. My first Serbian language meetup was here. It wasn't too hard to find and public transportation can drop you off within a block of the actual cafe. Parking doesn't look bad either. I noticed that they are also connected to the Beograd Meat Market, which will come in handy for future reference. We took a table outside. They have regular metal patio chairs that are pretty comfortable. In true Balkan form, we weren't served in any rush. We had time to sit down and relax before the waitress finally took my order. She hadn't brought any menus, so I was unoriginal and ordered what my colleague was having. It was a cold coffee with plain vanilla ice cream. My guess is something similar to Don Cafe Ice a la mode. For dinner I had the sopska salata. Tomato, onion, peppers, oil, salt and pepper, and cheese. I can't get enough of them. All of the ingredients were very fresh and it tasted great! The waitress was very patient with us and quickly apologized and brought utensils after she forgot to give them to us. She helped out my colleague with her Serbian language skills, so we left a good tip. The items were a bit expensive, but I guess I'm still comparing them to E. European pricing systems. Some of their food is really good and some is just really bad. I really like the crepe with the beef prosciutto, because I don't eat pork. And you can get any kind of coffee you like. The pastries and cakes are really not good. I think they use powdered cream for the Chantilly and frosting and it's not nice. Service can be slow/rude or really good, depending on who you get. Not all the staff speaks English. The best part is the lovely patio; I would come here just for a coffee or a snack. read more

Highly recommend checking out Beograd Cafe... Fantastic food and friendly staff. The menu features all of the Serbian/Balkan classics that you could ask for. First time eating Serbian food, I went with the salad and Jelen beer bottle. The bread they serve is so good and the beer is up to par. I sampled the spinach and cheese burek which is delish but I'm trying to watch what I eat these days so make sure you hit the gym if you go after this puppy. That day in particular service was slow, their system was down. But I wasn't complaining I was sitting directly infront of the tv watching LaLiga game. Service was good but not exceptional, music was a bit loud for our liking. This place was larger than expected as well (not a bad thing, just noting). I ordered the cabbage burek. It was fantastic! It was warm, chewy, filled with cabbage, not very salty. Mmmm! I'm looking forward to returning. And another plus for me personally, the cabbage burek was almost identical to cabbage strudel my Austrian/Hungarian grandma would make (only very rarely as she got older). read more

Awesome. Come get your meat on. We've been here several times. There is a mild language barrier with the staff, but they are sweet and patient and we get through it. The food is excellent. The cucumber and feta salad is enough for two. The sample is enough for FOUR!!!! The past two times I've come for the pork chops. Tender and very flavorful, and served with French fries beautifully over cooked so they are just a little crunchy. Be sure to get a little of the plum brandy too! read more

We ate dinner last night at Beograd Cafe. Service was good, clean. Salad, coffee, French fries was good but we ordered two kinds of borek, I usually makes borek at home. Inside of cheese borek was full of uncooked dough it smells and I'll attach the picture. We couldn't eat it. Potato inside potato borek was raw too. It took almost half an hour till they bring it but still we couldn't eat it either. We like the atmosphere.if I go back never order food. I'll try desserts and drinks. read more

This is more restaurant than cafe, although they make an excellent cappuccino. I had a few of those plus breakfast as I worked through the morning on my laptop. None of the service issues others mentioned: I was helped right away, and though I had to flag my girl down for new coffee etc. I attribute that to my being the only one there to work rather than eat, socialize. I don't think they intend it to be a place where people can just hang and work. The vibe is definitely Eastern European, as one would expect and which was no problem for me in this decade, when smoking is no longer permitted inside. (And I had no idea Serbians are so tall!?) Long story short I did not find a new place to work in Irving Park, but I did find a place to drink beer at 10 am on a Monday. That's a win. read more

I can't really state much because I was in and out during work. But I can say that after performing my work the owner offered me a lunch and I accepted. And glad I did. The owner was very personable as well as the wait staff. Which was all women. Anyway, i had the beef goulash w mashed potatoes and it was awesome. Fresh not box mashed potatoes. And the beef in the goulash was nice, tender and perfectly spiced. For people that do not know what goulash is, it's like a stew, thick broth or sauce. Their is a restaurant and grocery store which are connected. The grocery store seems to sells lots of items from their homeland. And on the grocery side they also sell some bottles of pivo/beer and juices etc. On this side some of the food they sell is displayed under a hot counter and you choose from there. There is what looks like a full bar on the restaurant side. All nicely furnished and cozy. Along with screens I think. Like I said I was in and out but next time I go I will check out more details. Typical slavic cafe, with vast majority of patrons being slavic. Came with a group for coffee, and weren't sure whether to linger... given the coffee options: Nescafe and 'serbian coffee' (never heard of such; rather, it's Turkish/Arabic with a twist). The nescafe we ordered turned out to be far more impressive than we imagined. They mixed milk/chocolate in, and it turned out to be a nice little dessert/coffee spin. read more

It comes with fresh bread, onions and sour cream. Serbians eat it like a hamburger. The chopped salad is also my favorite. If you like cabbage, I recommend you try the sarma. I'm a big BIG fan of European food! This is great and I cannot wait to come back here and try more of their items. - The Eurokrem Crepe was huuuge! We ordered the large size and we could hardly finish it. They do not skimp on on the spread. Totally worth a try with bambi biscuits! - Spinach and Cheese Burek is a must must must! Amazing and filling! They have other options. However, unlike previous ones that I've tried at other restaurants, it is high in the oil department and has a fried texture to it but I would still highly recommend it. - Šopska salad was basic, the vegetables were fresh and delicious but I found the price to be high for what you get. Having lived in Belgrade and spent countless hours at the many cafes along Knez Mihailova, I could tell you that this place does Belgrade proud. One of my favorite places in my neighborhood and in Chicago. If you plan to go here, try to make your first visit in the summer when you can sit outside. They revamped the inside with plush sofas and cool art, which is great in the winter, but to most closely mimic the Serbian experience sit outside and don't be in a hurry. Bring a book or your laptop. Contrary to what other yelpers have posted, they absolutely have a menu. It is quite varied too. They offer crepes both sweet and savory, salads, cevapi (sausages), burek (cheese or meat filled phyllo dough pie), and an assortment of hot and cold beverages. I like the bela kava (translated directly: white coffee, or actually cafe latte). They also make a lovely cappuccino but keep in mind that this is not Starbucks so don't expect a huge serving of any drink. Sip, don't gulp. I personally always struggle between the cevapcici (grilled minced meat sausages), which are delish, and the burek, which is the best I've had in Chicago. The cevapi comes in two sizes: 4-6 links and 8-10 links, and is served with freshly baked lepinja (bread), which is in itself a special treat. I like to ask for ajvar (pronounced ay-var), which is a typical Balkan relish made from red bell peppers, which goes wonderfully with cevapi. The burek is HUGE. It is a baked meat or cheese or cheese & spinach phyllo dough pie that is about 8"-10" in diameter and sliced into four pieces. Two pieces will do. So this is best shared, or eat two and take two home. You would have to be really hungry to eat more than two. Trust me, you'll regret it as you waddle out of there. The shopska salata is wonderful if sometimes a bit cheesy. It is a nice alternative to what we Americans expect a salad to be, which usually involves lettuce or some other leafy green. This salad, which is the typical Balkan salad, has diced cucumbers, tomatoes, onion, and red peppers tossed in olive oil and topped with grated cheese (I think sirene, although it might be feta). No lettuce to be found. Sometimes they put too much cheese and it overpowers the other flavors but usually it's a perfect balance. Do expect the European experience, meaning your waiters will not be interrupting you every few minutes to check on you. They do check on you but probably not as frequently as American diners would like. Eat slowly. People watch. On a sidenote, I agree with yelper Lisa that for the ladies, there is plenty of eye candy in the form of a bevy of Eastern European men, who flock to this place as one of the few places you could still chill Euro-style without having a server slap the check down on your table right after you take the last bite and hurrying you up. read more

When I feel nostalgic and have a taste for burek I come here. I love their cheese burek. For $6 you get 4 big slices. It is always hot and I usually take it home. They wrap it so good I come home and it is still warm. I would not mind a little more cheese in burek but then again I am just spoiled because I am coming from Beograd so I grew up eating it. I was in Beograd Cafe on two occasions when my husband and I had friends from Michigan and Florida. First time we ordered mixed plate (cevapi, pljeskavica, chopped onion). The plate of food was huge and delicious. Second time I had burek, of course and my friend had pljeskavica with kajmak.(kajmak is similar to clotted cream). He could not finish his plate. And he is 6'3" tall and can eat.Really eat!! You are not going to see waitress "running around your table" every minute and I like that. They will let you enjoy your food. I have always been a customer of the outdoor cafe and the grocery store, but now I have a new Sony Netbook, and needed a Wi Fi Cafe in my neighborhood. I showed up and Nina hooked me up. I am really stupid when it comes to computers or my iphone even, so I really needed to be walked through the process of setting up my computer to get on the internet. Nina is brilliant! I think I've tried all of the different types of burek and, even, taken a frozen one home to bake later. They are delicious as is, OR smeared with ajvar! My favorites are the beef and the spinach & cheese. The chevapchichi was enjoyed by my friends, the crepes and lepinje are worth a mention, too. The bean stew with smoked meats and moussaka are great, and lest you think that Serbian and Balkan cuisine is all about the MEAT, there are plenty of veggies as well: tomatoes, onions, green peppers, eggplant,and grilled veggies abound. There are cabbage rolls, a few veggie-stuffed burek, and several salads to choose from. The atmosphere is casual, the prices are reasonable, and the food Next door/adjoining Beograd Cafe is Beograd Market with all sorts of imported goodies and, most important, lots of wonderful pastries and desserts!
