I tried Toscana Balkan Restaurant today, but the biggest surprise was the difference between the prices on Google and the restaurant menu prices. To give you an idea, the Cevap Sandwich little tasty sausages served on their lepina bread on Google are $5.95, but I paid $16.99 and $4.00 for a bottle of Fanta Orange Pop, which is $2.00 on Google. Chicken Soup is $2.00 on Google and $7.95 on the house menu. I'm unsure if the restaurant controls the Google prices, but these menu prices are sometimes 300% or more. Regarding the food, I liked everything, especially the sandwiches. The sandwich portion was so big that I only ate half of it because they give you a lot for the money. I'm enclosing a picture of half of the Cevap Sandwich with fries; the rest I'll have for dinner tonight. Your best bet is to split a sandwich and order an appetizer. Walked in because we thought they had Döner, ended up staying for the Cevap Sandwich. The owner was so excited, high fived us and said that he makes his own. At this point I'm so excited because it's really hard to come by some really good Cevap in the city. The plate comes with the sandwich, fries and some raw onions. Wow! My friends have talked this restaurant up so much that I had to go check it out for myself. Nestled in a small plaza a couple of blocks away from Foster and Lincoln, this restaurant is accessible by both CTA and car. Bonus points, there's free parking!! The restaurant itself is very clean and organized. You can tell that the owners take very great pride in keeping it clean and putting their heart into the business. We were greeted by a very nice lady who explained to us the menu, in there end I ordered a pita made from cheese and the chicken sandwich (#5). We also ordered drinks and then selected a seat. It was a super snowy day so there wasn't much foot traffic but it was also still early for lunch. Our food didn't take long to arrive and when it did, all of a sudden the lunch time traffic began! There were so many people in and out- some stayed and kept their social distance but most took out. The lady at the cashier which I assume is the owner always greeted everyone with so much zeal and respect, you can tell that they really appreciate their customers and many of them appear to be regulars. Our food was so good and so warm- my husband is such a stickler for cold food and will literally complain if the food is not hot hot so the fact that the pita was steaming hot was a major win for Him. I'm not crazy about hot hot food so I waited until it cooled down but I loved that the pita wasn't overly salty, I loved that it was flaky and that the filling was "fluffy" in the sense that there was an equal ratio of eggs and cheese inside that filled up the inside. I love love love a good thick pita that has a lot of filling and this pita definitely had that. There is nothing worse than getting a pita that is flaky on the outside but has very little filling- that was not the case with Toscana!! As for the chicken sandwich- well, it's amazing. I now understand why my friends praise Toscana so much for their chicken sandwich- the bread of their sandwich was perfectly toasted, the chicken was really well cooked and seasoned and the toppings only added more flavor to the entire sandwich. The owner was also attentive and stopped by to ask if we needed anything- you don't find hospitality like that everywhere and so I was really appreciative of her kindness. I can't wait to go back and try more food! Highly recommend this restaurant if you are in the Lincoln Square area or looking to try traditional Bosnian Herzegovinian cuisine! read more

Great place. The lepina is pillowy, chewy, and warm; the cevapi and chicken sandwiches are both delicious. Also ordered a shopska salad and a cabbage salad (both tasty), neither of which were on the menu, so I'm glad I asked. Friendly helpful service too. Definitely plan on being back. p.s. I had ordered here twice before. A little expensive but good portions and tasty. Today, I ordered carry out. I arrived 15 minutes later as agreed. The 7 foot 8 owner complained that I was early. He didn't just ask for a few minutes, he aggressively blamed me. I had the Latka & Simka platter, 3 kinds of meat, yellow rice, smashed together in an anti-presentation with a kind of australeopithicus pita. It was $35 with a modest tip left in appreciation of the owner's menacing affect. Hearty. Plain. Oh. A nice cream of chicken soup that was a little less plain. I have never eaten here, but while looking for a Mediterranean restaurant in Andersonville to accommodate my group, I have to say, I'm highly amused at two reviewers who have given this place a negative review for not allowing them to bring in Subway sandwiches to eat while on the premises. I find it hilarious, and want to patronize them just to make up for the ignoramuses who think it's fine to dine on fare from another establishment while a guest of their restaurant. I give them five stars for being as civil as they were. I've seen signs that caution patrons not to bring in outside food when dining. The woman who runs the place is very rude and un attentive. I walked in to order lunch and even though no one was there she just stared at me like I had interrupted her day. No hello. No asking what I wanted. She just stood there saying nothing. Weird. When I went to order it took a good five times explaining what I wanted before she got it right. Their menu isn't that complicated. I was just trying I order two sandwiches. Then when I went to pay I told her I had the coupon from yelp - which is why I stopped in in the first place - and she refused to take it. She said the new management didn't accept it. That's great. Then the new management should take it off the yelp page. I walked out and went down the street to HUBS, where the staff is friendly and he prices are better. I look forward to going to do my laundry every week. Why you ask...because I step next door and have some fabulous food while my clothes are washing. It has become part of my routine. When this place opened I couldn't wait to try it out. We are always looking for new places to eat. I must say all the waiting was worth it. From the Spinich Philo to the roasted potatoes there hasn't been one thing on this menu that I have tried that wasn't pleasing to my mouth and stomach. I'm sure this place can get mixed reviews but I've never had a bad experience here. Reason being is people expect certain tastes to be provided at locations that serve traditional food from other countries to taste all the same. You have to have an open mind going into this establishment as with any other ethnic food joint. The food i have had there is Cevapi (Pita with Beef Sausages) and Sirnica (Cheese Pie) have both been delicious. Speaking to the owner made me at ease when eating at her restaurant. She is a very clean person and her kitchen stays clean and neat. If you want to taste Bosnian food and feel as if it's home made then check it out for yourself. I live a block away and came in here and bought hot dog and fries and a drink. The hot dog tasted bland.. Almost no taste. The fries were soggy. At least my soda tasted like soda! I came across this place on accident but it was a pleasent one. I was greeted by a genorous portion of hospitality and a nice sized sandwhich. I originally wanted a gyro which they have, as well as burgers, hotdogs and the sorts like that but I would not go to this restaurant for that type of food as that food can be found everywhere and this review would be useless. I discovered some traditional Balkan food. I had a Pljeskavica sandwhich. It is a mixed patty of lamb and beef and it was served on homemade Lepina bread whice they make everyday. If you love Gyros you will love this sandwhich. It comes with a homemade sour cream sauce and a red sauce with freshley cut onions. They have other traditional sandwhiches that I will eventually try. Service sucks. Ordered my food to go. Menu indicated you get bread, salad and two sides for a dinner. Paid full price for dinner but got my food without bread, salad, only one side and without the sauce for my order to boot! I felt short changed and called them to say items were missing. They did not even offer to deliver missing items, and told me to come back for them. I went back for the missing items. I was informed they are changing the menu and are now only offering one side for the dinner order. Still did not get the sauce for my order. Ordinary tasting food. When I visited this restaurant for the first time this past week, I received friendly customer service. The food was good. The portions are large and generous. I get the feeling that the owners (my assumption) don't take their customers for granted. They accept credit cards except AMEX and don't require a minimum charge like some other casual eating establishments in the area. During my visit, the soda machine was out of Pepsi. I informed the person at the counter of this. She thanked me nicely for letting her know and later apologized, as I was eating my meal, for not having Pepsi available. It was not a big deal for me, but I appreciated her apology, which showed she cared about the customer experience. As I left, the owners thanked me again for coming. My husband and I loved to eat at this place especially it was convenient for us when we are doing our laundry because this is place is just beside Spin Cycle. The food also tastes good and delicious. But yesterday I was kinda disappointed on how I was treated. My husband ordered the usual chicken sandwich. I didnt get to order because at that moment I was craving for a sub. I went outside and bought a Subway sandwich. I thought that it would be okay to eat my subway sandwich inside their restaurant because besides we were regular customers there, my husband also ordered his food and drink there. I was approached by the lady who works there and told me rudely that I shouldnt eat my Subway sandwich there. Yes - this place is easy to miss since from the outside it could just as easily be a run of the mill hot-dog stand. BUT! The food is truly awesome. The traditional Bosnia (I think the owner said he was Bosnian) breads and meats are so delicious. The Cevapcici sandwich is my favorite. They serve it on a soft pita-like bread that they make there. When we went, they were slow and the guy behind the counter (I assume the owner) took us into the tiny kitchen where his mother (all the bread recipie's are hers, he says) was rolling out Philo dough on a big stainless steel table. The table was easily 4 feet by 4 feet and she has a thin layer of unbroken dough stretched across the whole thing - so thin you could see through it like wax paper. We're looking forward to going back and trying the spinach pies and other treats. They have hamburgers and Italian beef there as well, but the reason to go is the traditional food. read more
