I recently accepted a job in the area and have started exploring Columbia more as a result. I was excited to eat here at the suggestion of a friend and I'm happy I tried it out. This is another gem in Columbia. I had the tostadas which were really yum and quite filling. Because I was feeling particulary hungry I also got a glass of orange juice (fresh squeezed deliciousness) and a side of potatoes (sweet + normal, heavy seasoning.) It was way too much food for me, even though I was starving, but that's okay - I just know for next time. I didn't anticipate the tostadas being as filling as they were!! It's not cheap but not too pricey for the quality. I think pricing is fair. The waitress who helped me was very friendly and efficient; I didn't catch her name but she was wearing glasses :) Tips: Mid-week at 10:30am: no wait. Parking lot right infront: no street parking necessary. Almost reminds me of a convienence store from the outside. While visiting my friends in Columbia I suggested we grab breakfast before I left town and so without even a pause my friends both recommended Cafe Berlin...and my life will never be the same. Upon arriving I was greeted and the service was really good. I ordered pancakes and a biscuit. I also had syrup, butter, and jelly to try. These pancakes were so delicious I couldn't help but moan while eating them I mean seriously, I am a pancake fan and these are by far in my top 3 of favorites. I don't know what it is about them, but they were sweet and cooked just right. The biscuit was fluffy and delicious. I added on the butter and jelly and it was just to die for! I loved every bite of it. Of course my eyes are always bigger than my stomach and so I had to take half of my oder to go, but that's okay because I had breakfast all over again the day after...and I promise, it all still tasted the same. I am so glad I was able to try Cafe Berlin and the next weekend I am in Columbia you better believe I'll go back for round 2. Cute location with homey decore and suprisingly delicious food! We tried going after church on Sunday and was turned away by the crazy crowds waiting outside. Brunch on a weekday had Cafe Berlin nice and empty except for a handful of people though. There are quite a few tables inside so good for you and a few friends or family. The menu has breakfast and lunch options as well as sides, drinks (adult or not) and coffee. My favorite was K's apple and sausage on pancake- fabulous! The sweet and aromatic syruplike sauce soaked wonderfully into the pancake as you nibbled on sliced sausages cooked with sliced onions. A wonderful mix of sweet and salty, great for breakfast. The biscuit that came with my gravy was tasty but the gravy did not wow (certainly not $2.50 worth of wow). The overall experience was great though and I look forward to coming back and giving the rest of the menu a try. They do close promptly at 2PM though so don't be late! read more

I cannot believe we've gone years without eating here! Such a fun spot with an excellent vibe. The Compost Pile includes a biscuit topped with topped with veggies, potatoes, cheese and a burger. You definitely want the gravy, and if you like a little bit of heat, go for the chipotle gravy! Note: this meal is giant without the added egg, but if you are up to the challenge, a little yolk hasn't ever hurt anything! If you like a sweeter breakfast, but want something heartier than a pancake or cream toast, the Butch Jones come loaded with onion, apples, and a delicious andouille sausage atop a pancake that is stuffed with bacon and eggs. Pro tip: the inside waiting area has a coffee station - if you're visiting on the weekend, come ready to wait 30+ minutes. read more

Went for brunch today, Saturday. Very crowded and long wait because of graduations. We waited about an hour, but got coffee and lattes while we waited. First time and the food was very good. I got the Union: scrambled eggs, bacon, potatoes, and 1/2 biscuit and gravy. Omg the biscuit and gravy was delicious! Also, the roasted potatoes were up there with some of my favorite. There were some white potatoes and some sweet - seasoned perfectly!!!! The place looks like it is always packed. Parking and search is very limited. Seating was ok, but you are very close to other tables and people are walking around and you're likely to get bumped a couple of times. Overall, very good! This is one of the must eat places in Columbia. I can't believe I've never tried this gem until recently. During my first visit I got the Apples and Sausage over French toast. The brown sugar reduction was just a bit too sweet for my taste and there was a lot of it, so it was basically just soaking everything in my plate. But my second visit, I got the Starving Artist (pictured), which is biscuit with potatoes, greens, eggs, and chipotle vegetarian gravy. It was amazingggg. The gravy just made everything on the plate delicious. The service is great and they use local ingredients to support the community. It definitely is a Como classic! read more

I ate here at around 730am on a Thursday morning and it was not very busy at all. I had been here before for just coffee and I sat outside so I never really took it all in. This time I brought in the daily paper and took my time. I was already planning to try the "Clifton Butch Jones" as I am a sucker for all things pancakes. I also got the large Cafe Latte to wash it all down with. This thing is big! A large pancake stuffed with bacon, sausage, scrambled eggs and then topped with sausage and apples and their awesome maple syrup which has a nice smoky spicy kick to it. For $10 this was a filling meal that left my pallette and my stomach very happy! My service was quick and helpful and the atmosphere was ideal for a easy start to a Thursday off from work. One of my new favorite breakfast places in Columbia. This place is worth the wait! The Starving Artist was fantastic, and the grits we got for the table were delicious. Great menu selection with a little something for everyone. We went on a Sunday morning around 10, and the place was pretty packed. The host said the wait would be about 30 minutes, but in reality it was only 15 minutes. There is a dedicated waiting area with seating and access to coffee, so the wait itself wasn't bad. Once we got a table, the service was prompt. The coffee was standard Lakota coffee, nothing to write home about. The menu ranged from basic breakfast options like french toast to more interesting options like pancake burritos or waffles with chipotle mayo. Being gravy fans, my family all ordered something that had gravy in it. The vegetarian gravy on the Starving Artist made the dish; it had a tiny kick to it and worked well with every other element on the plate. The serving sizes give you plenty of food for the cost without having a ton left over. You can tell the ingredients are fresh, and many of them are locally sourced. Our server kept things moving along even with the crowd, and we never wanted for coffee or water. One quirky touch I enjoyed was that the bill came in an actual book instead of a typical receipt holder. The decor is funky, as is the overall vibe of the place. (One tip, they do not have a speaker system to call names on the wait list so be listening carefully. Someone missed their table while we were waiting because they didn't hear their name.) read more

Hubby and I were disappointed with what we ordered, and we had to wait a long, long time (over an hour) to get disappointed. Even the coffee took about an hour. However, with that said, we would still be willing to go back the next time we are in the Columbia area. It was a fun place with toys and odd objects as table markers instead of the usual number on a stick. Most of the food is local and/or organic and totally made on site. At the time of ordering, I was in the mood for something light, so I ordered granola and yogurt with fruit, and it was fine but unsatisfying as the morning crept into the lunch hour. Hubby's french toast tasted like it was made on the same skillet as bacon. However, I had a taste of the bessie's pancake and it was so fluffy and light and perfect--probably the best pancake I've had in a restaurant. Maybe regulars get the good stuff. First time here. Veggie Omelet, with sourdough toast single pancake. Hubby-eggs potatoes sausage bacon full breakfast. The 3 egg omlete must use small eggs. The veggies were, green & red peppers, red onions, spinach and mushrooms. Worst idea of an omlete I've ever had. The peppers were thick cut and basically raw, totally overwhelmed the thin omlete that I asked if it had cheese, yes cheddar, that was nonexistant. Oh forgot little tomatoes that also were UNDER COOKED. The pancake looked good was was delivered so cold we folded it to get the butter to soften. These are plate size pancakes with a tiny silver cup of syrup. Asked for another and was charged $1.50. Husbands breakfast was ok. The bacon remained on the plate it was really "off" tasting. I went to Café Beeline twice during my 10 day vacation for breakfast. Would've gone more but my friends had to work during the week! I have to say I was very pleasantly surprised at how many vegetarian options they have. I ordered the union both times with veggie sausage and veggie gravy. The first time I got the half order of biscuit and gravy, the second time I had to go with the full order. SO GOOD. I was like a kid in a candy store getting to eat vegetarian gravy that I didn't have to make myself. The servers are delightful and friendly, and the food comes out at lightning speed. It takes a while to be seated, but it's not their fault they're popular and busy! Next time I'm back in Columbia, thus is the first place I'm going. And if I ever leave Philly I just might move there so I can work at Cafe Berlin! read more

My wife and myself had a great brunch at Café Berlin. We got the Scrambled Veggies and the Starving Artist. The vegetarian gravy on the starving artist was top notch. As a vegetarian, this was the first time I was getting biscuits and gravy. The scrambled eggs had a delicious selection of grilled veggies on the top which made for a great brunch. Cafe Berlin is a super popular spot here in Como. I have been a couple times and usually, the experience is the same. The place is packed, the wait is long, and its super loud. They serve breakfast and lunch the whole time they are open, so that is nice. On this visit, I ordered the Spanish Omelet - Onions and green peppers topped with tomato sauce and feta cheese with a side of Cheesy Grits and Fresh Squeezed Grapefruit Juice. The omelet was very disappointing, it was completely drenched in their "tomato sauce" which was bitter and hard to eat. The egg part of the omelet itself was pretty much non-existent next to the heavy handed veggies and sauce. The Cheesy grits were ok, but nothing I couldn't do at home. For two people, our tab was a whopping $30, just for breakfast. For me, Cafe Berlin something I am going to pass on for about a year. read more

Order takeout, said I wanted a veggie omelette, no hash no toast no cheese charged me for the sides anyway, the spinach was soggy frozen spinach, the tomatoes were RAW cherry tomatoes half of them were not sliced, just placed in the omelette. Asked for added hamburger, they simply put a patty on the side, charged me 4 bucks for that. Asked for a short stack of pancakes that cost 7 bucks, then they charged me for the box and bag! Service rude and conscending from the person running the register, 24 bucks for a takeout with no beverage, for the worst veggie omelette I've ever seen. Starving Artist is the biscuits & gravy of my dreams

Firstly, the food is fresh, and tasted great. Lots of options and local fare. House-made sausage, however, was full of cartilage, and not pleasant to eat. Everything else we had was wonderful. But the service was ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE. There were open tables everywhere, yet about 10-12 people standing around waiting to be put on a list.....?! We are finally seated by our waitress who did not receive a tip. Why? Because she was the worst, most miserable waitress I've ever had. Maybe she was having a bad day-- but that is no excuse for the quality of service we received. Not only did she have a terrible attitude, but she did not show any SUGGESTION of concern for her patrons. It took us 20 minutes just to receive our coffee. We were a party of TWO. I watched two other parties of two receive their checks and leave before we even received our food. One of the cooks/busboys came to ask us how we are doing and assure us our food was coming about 50 minutes later. At least he seemed to care, because she certainly did not. Finally she brings our food and walks away. Less than five minutes later she puts our check on the table and says, "no rush." Yeah. No kidding. She did not ask us how our food was (and just for the record, our eggs were not cooked the way we ordered them, but oh well!) Nor did she ask if we wanted anything else. Then she comes back about five minutes later to clear our plates and see if we paid. Funny that she didn't show any notion of concern or attentiveness when it came to actually serving us, but getting us out. We threw $25 on the table and walked out and she says "Thanks, bye." Yeah, BYE. Will never, ever return to this establishment. read more

The gluten free French toast is seriously one of the best I have had so far. The omelette was just ok - was a little overdone and not as fluffy as I would like it. The folks who came with me had the sweet BB and the awesome burger with the BB burger in it. They loved them both. I had the potatoes that came with the burger and they were so good! The wait time is a little more than what I'd like but, I did take a small walk and the 30 mins wait time did not feel bad at all. read more
