The rest of my party enjoyed their food. I wouldn't know because I never received mine. We waited for a good 20 minutes before being served. Overall, we spent an hour and a half at the restaurant. The food took forever. Never refilled the water. Never checked on us. They didn't bring the main part of my order, then after reminding them, they still never brought it to me. I asked them to take it off the bill, as I never received it, so they just knocked a couple of dollars off the overall bill???? Never came to get the bill, so we had to put away the plastic and go to cash. Absolute terrible experience. It's a shame, because the good food with just a little customer service would have gone far. I was quite torn as to how many stars I should give this place. We went at about 930 on a Saturday morning... it was busy, but the wait was only ten minutes. They offered us coffee and/or water while we were waiting. The menu is... extensive. Too much so for a breakfast place. I felt like I was at an IHOP. My SO had apples and sausage on french toast. This was defiantly the highlight of our visit and if we had had this dish alone, I would've given five stars. However, I ordered the eggs florentine. The hollandaise sauce was slightly lumpy and had no acidity (almost like it was either pre-made or came from a package). The eggs were over-done for a poached egg. The spinach and other greens were bland and I don't think a pinch of salt or pepper was used on the entire plate. However, the mixed potatoes were great. I would go back... just don't get the eggs florentine. Or, I suspect, anything with their hollandaise. read more

this is definitely a hipster dive. i love the idea of healthy, organic food. however, their delivery and quality control make me wonder why people keep coming back to this place. the ONLY time i have gotten good (read: friendly) service was the first time I went there a few weeks after they opened. every subsequent visit has been met with people who are extremely rude (glaring at me, sarcastic remarks, etc). as i said, the 1st time i went there everything was great, server was nice, food was OK, etc. 2nd time i went there i ordered a VEGGIE burger for carryout with some potatoes. drove all the way home only to find the burger had BEEF in it. OK. i called and they said i could drive back and get a replacement burger. i did end up doing that, but i shouldn't have bothered. the guy behind the counter had the biggest attitude i have ever seen -- he basically looked pissed off that i was wanting anything. needless to say not pleasant to deal with. after all the trouble of getting the correct order, i find the potatoes to be so salty i cannot eat them (i actually distinctly remember thinking they tasted like hippie sweat) and the burger to be bland and tasteless (and small). 3rd time i went... again the food was bland and tasteless, nothing special. and that same guy i had dealt with before was working behind the counter and, you guessed it, was still glaring at the customers. WTF at their customer service. get it together, columbia. just because it's a college town doesn't mean you have to hire only college students who don't care about a career in food service! hire a staff with passion for what they do, or at least manners! read more

Great place for unusual, creative breakfast food. The owner also helps the community with fundraisers for various people and causes-so it's my first recommendation for visitors. I like Cafe Berlin but I think their popularity has affected their quality a bit. Service and quality of the food are inconsistent. I usually get the hummus wrap which comes with hummus, grape tomatoes, and feta cheese. Last time I ordered this, some of the tomatoes were shriveled up and didn't look safe to eat so I took them out. I also like getting their potato pancakes but lately the taste has been off and even once the potatoes they used had gone rancid. As for service, sometimes the waiter is friendly and sometimes they are indifferent. When I went here with my boyfriend last month, the waitress seemed more interested in sitting down and talking with the kitchen staff than serving us. When I received my water there was a wire scrubbing brush bristle floating in it and it took me almost our whole meal before I could flag her down and get a new glass of water. Overall, I think their food is becoming not worth the money and there should definitely be no old or expired anything in my food. read more

This is the best place in town. Really good food, good coffee and specialty drinks, excellent overall. My favorite is biscuits and gravy sometimes with an egg on top, yum! But, there have been several times where I have walked thru the door without being greeted as well as sat down and didn't get service for a long while. Wish they would hire more people as this place is always packed. I do love taking guests or meeting friends here and I will continue to come back. This rating is because of their terrible customer service and business ethics. The food was fine, nothing to brag about there, but I will NEVER go back to Cafe Berlin because of our waitress. Never in my life have I had such an unpleasant service experience. The waitress was uninterested, unfriendly, and rude, and frankly she made eating there uncomfortable for me and my boyfriend. We are usually very generous tippers, but at Cafe Berlin we gave our waitress a tip that matched the level of service she gave us. Later in the day after we had left, my boyfriend checked his credit card statement and the waitress had ADDED TO HER TIP. She charged more than we wrote on the receipt. Pretty sure purposely overcharging someone's credit card is illegal, and if this is the type of person Cafe Berlin wishes to hire--someone with no manners or ethics, then this place does not deserve your business. Save yourself the trouble of getting stolen from and eat somewhere else. read more

This place is awesome! Biscuits and gravy, roasted potatoes, gigantic pancakes. Homemade bread with homemade jam. They also have a juicer, so hubby got fresh apple and oj. Friendly waitstaff. Never again. No meal is worth this abysmal level of service. Not that we got to eat. We were told the wait would be 20-25 minutes. Fine, we can chat while we wait. An hour later, multiple parties had been seated ahead of us, several tables were sitting empty the entire time, the staff would not pull two tables together to seat us, and a couple of single patrons were allowed to sit and sip coffee and play on their phones at four-tops for that entire hour--after having paid their bills. During this time, the hostess never spoke to us or made eye contact after putting us on the list. We simply walked out and went elsewhere. Will not ever return. read more

Rude service. Walked in, took 10 minutes for host to even acknowledge our presence, even when there was no line and many tables were open. Went to sit down to wait for the table by the windows, and 10 minutes later same host came over to tell us we had to move, and wait somewhere else, even though the whole area was empty. The food here is great, good enough that we come back despite the slow service and always having to wait awhile for a table. My biggest complaint is what we experienced today - we've never had to change a diaper in this place before, and realized today that they are not set up to accommodate for families. The bathrooms are FILTHY, and there are no changing tables. I ended up having to schlep everything out to the hot car to do the changing and then go back to the bathroom to wash hands. It was a bit of an ordeal. I understand that they are mostly catering towards college students, but there always seem to be kids and families in this place, so they have to have heard this complaint before. This is a great place for breakfast. It is now a yearly tradition for my husband and me when we come to visit my brother. Excellent coffee, wonderful bread, fresh ingredients and interesting combinations for omelettes or pancakes or whatever you want for breakfast. I have been eating at cafe berlin for years now. The food is usually great, fresh, and tasty. However, THE BATHROOMS NEED TO BE CLEANED! Seriously, gross. We have kids and I dread having to take them in there. The whole restaurant is actually pretty dirty, the place needs some serious deep cleaning. This is not just an occasional thing, every time we go there the bathrooms are nasty and I am frankly a little scared to look in the kitchen when passing by. They need to do a better job at cleaning up, or hire some one to do some cleaning for them. read more

I've gone a few times to this place. I absolutely love the A&S! You basically have to seat yourself. All the times I have gone it was near empty so finding a place to sit was not a problem. Last time the glass I was given was dirty but I did not drink from it so I did not say anything. They charge for extra syrup so heads up! I have tried other things but I always go back to A&S. The service is not so great but the food is good for breakfast, brunch, or a snack. (I haven't had anything other than breakfast food) They have very large portions but be prepared for ten dollar plates. I hate to give this place a bad review, because the food is always delicious. But the overall experience has been declining steeply over the years. Lately, they have been rude to customers to the point of intimidation. I had witnessed several instances of borderline bullying of the customers, but always just assumed it was probably a situation that got out of control on the patron's side. Until it happened to us. Before I go into that, I must note that the level of hygiene of the servers is dubious at best: most of them have dirty finger nails. Recently, when walking in for a Sunday breakfast, we waited by the door, completely ignored for the servers for about 10 minutes, all the while trying to get their attention to ask about wait time and the possibility of getting a table, and being equally dismissed by all of them, who kept telling us we should talk to their hostess (that's what they call their male host), who never came out from the back. When we were able to approach the hostess, he put our names on the list and told us to wait around for a table. There were several baby tables at the place. Since we were told to wait, we chose a place by the window and sat down. Another 10 minutes, same hostess came to us and my told us to move to another area, because we could not sit there. When asked (very politely) why not, the answer was: "Just can't." We told the hostess (very politely) that we were leaving and that we would no longer need a table. My husband went back in to explain to the manager what was happening to the customers. When he tried to approach a server to ask for the manager, he was told (ipsis literis): "Manager is busy. And we have a no jerks policy. Only jerks complain." I am sad about this occurrence, as we love the food and the fact that they cook with organic ingredients. However, the near bullying experience is not worth the food. We left and had breakfast at Main Squeeze, where the food is equally excellent, less expensive, and they treat you like friends when you walk in the door. read more

Awesome food. Terrible service. We have been there twice and had a bad experience with unorganized service both times. The host runs around looking like he/she has no idea what is going and writes down your name on an old receipt for the waiting list. There were multiple old receipts with what appeared to be lack of organization. We were told that we would be seated in a couple minutes outside. After 20 minutes, we seated ourselves and then were lectured by the waitress. Not fun. Maybe it is better on a week day but good luck getting a table within 30-40 minutes on a weekend despite many open tables that are just waiting to be filled. A co-worker and I placed an order and had it delivered by another company. It was not good at all!!! Pancakes were burnt and eggs were very nasty on one persons order. Mine I got the patty melt with fries and the Chocolate Cake with Walnut Fudge Icing. On the melt the meat was dry and like a puck the onions were to dark and the fries were very soggy. The Cake was so so so sweet the icing had so much sugar it wasn't all melted! Not worth paying $2.99 for especially when can make myself at home a lot cheaper and better!
