The local secret sushi spot! Hard to find place, but that was part of the fun for us. Not the coziest atmosphere inside and few tables. But the food was worth it. Our go to appetizer, the gyoza was good. I've been missing the cucumber roll since we moved to DB and finally found a place that offers it...it's wonderful, fresh and delicious! Additionally, we had the Green samurai. Uni and abalone sashimi. All delicious. The Abalone has a very peculiar taste and was chewy, but this was first time I've ever had it so can't judge. As a local, I had heard lots of rave reviews about this place but was weary of the service. We arrived at 5:30 on a Friday to a half full restaurant and were waited on promptly by Nicole. She was great and helped us understand the menu and order system. The sushi was fresh, hot (when cooked), and beautifully displayed. Loved the fried eel and oh my god roll. This would have been a 5 star review, but the only issue is when we decided to add one more roll to the order, the place had started getting busy but we ordered quickly...just a simple California roll. It took over a half hour to be served and even then only because I walked up to the chef and asked for it in a to-go box. As anyone going on s date night knows, when you have a babysitter, time is of the essence. I'll start with all the things I really liked about this restaurant. The service was very good although our server was very hard to understand. We had special requests and she was exact on what we ordered. She smiled and was very nice. The sushi was very good and provided large pieces which was wonderful. The restaurant itself could use some updates. When we walked in there was a distinct mildewy smell. The entry door was really dirty on the inside and our table was full of crumbs which I brushed off. My soda was brought to the table with a gnat in it and our sushi had absolutely no presentation which was the biggest disappointment of all. Don't be discouraged that there is no sign on the building. The staff provided an enthusiastic greeting when we walked in. The sushi was yummy and the picture book menu made it easy to know exactly what was inside each roll before ordering. My family liked the tuna lovers roll so much we ordered a second. The udon soup was scrumptious. We were only visiting Daytona for a few days and I typically read the reviews on a local spot before trying. I am so glad we picked this hidden gem for our first dinner in town. Went here for the first time last night. Found them on Yelp and was quite surprised at how close it was to my House. As a local I love supporting locals. Very disappointing. We arrived to a half full restaurant. We ordered three rolls and it took 50 minutes for two rolls to come out and another 10 minutes for the last Oh my God roll to come out. After 40 minutes we asked our waiter if he could check on the rolls for us as we had been waiting for some time. His exact words were "we do not do things here like other places". We go in the order of the orders. Hmmm isn't that how most places go? Rather than responding in that way the young man could have apologized and said I will check for you. Even after we asked him it took him 5 minutes to make his way back to the sushi bar to check. As if the wait wasn't enough not one time in 45 minutes did he check on us to see if we needed anything (like a drink refill). He was friendly enough but very disappointed in the service. The Yelp reviews warned of darkness but I was not prepared for how filthy the walls and baseboards were. The tile grout was black which in the previous pictures on yelp was clean and white. No exaggeration and then walk back to the bathroom hallway just as bad. Perhaps the darkness is there to camouflage this. Why stay? Most reviews were about the good food and yes the sushi was delicious. Which is why I gave 3 stars and not 2. However, sadly I will not be returning. Service is important and clean walls and floors reflect a clean restaurant. read more

First of all this place has no signage so it was difficult to find. The inside looks like it's from the 80s/90s so could definitely use an refresh. The sushi itself was OK. The sashimi was a bit too cold. The spicy salmon was a regular salmon roll with spicy seasoning and same with the spicy California roll. I have been to this place several times before reading the reviews, and I can agree with some, but not all. It's a small restaurant on Seabreeze, really the only reason why I would ever go to Seabreeze at all. When you walk in it's an open room with several photographs hanging on the walls, the owner and chef is also a photographer so he hangs his art at the restaurant. Is the service slow? It can be. But, considering the sushi is good and cheap, well, I won't complain about the service. It's actually gotten better as they have hired more staff in the past few months. Definitely the best sushi in Daytona, unless there's some hidden gem I haven't tried yet. But, after trying every sushi place in Daytona and Ormond, this is hands down the best. Ocean? Check. Fresh fish? Check. Staff who are friendly and obviously take pride in their cuisine? Check. Ladies and gentlemen, we are on to a winner! Complimentary green tea comes in the best mugs. At least, to me. See my photos for evidence. You can have as many refills as you want. The vibe is cute and laid-back, that sort of French-influenced Japanese cafe thing that some Japanese places do so well. Specials are written on a whiteboard, and I had lovely smoked salmon and uni sushi that made me very happy. That uni was so creamy and delightful! When you look at the menu, you're also presented with a binder full of beautiful photos of each of their special rolls. More sushi places should do this! People eat with their eyes, and one of the great things that good sushi has going for it is exquisite presentation. I ordered a Red Dragon roll even though I was by myself, because that photo was too pretty (and I had a fridge in my hotel room). I also ordered green tea ice cream to go, and boom -- there was lunch AND dinner solved! No boring hotel food for me! I tried Café du Japon because looking at Yelp reviews, it appears to have won the highest marks overall for Daytona-area sushi restaurants. I had been to Sushi Ronin a few times and wanted to try something else, so I was glad to find it in a very good location on Seabreeze. The restaurant is small, making good use of a retail space that is humble on the outside with a traditional white storefront window and entry door set-up, but turning the interior into something that offers a feel of intimacy and slight exoticism. It could be argued the interior really tries too hard: there is a plasma-screen playing photos of Japan (and oddly, it seems also Russia and Italy maybe?) and some of the artwork seems generic-trendy, but the lanterns and lighting overall make for an intimate and inviting experience. Other reviewers have mentioned the service here. Ok, here's my own take: the service, alas, is pretty much inept. Not lazy, not indifferent, but inept. They seem to mean well overall, but they just don't have their act together. First, a young server approached me, got my order for unsweetend iced tea then returned to say they were out of it. Ok, can they do sweet tea or iced green tea? I was told no on both. Ok, I'll just have water. I'm going to get drinks later with friends so water's fine, thanks. There is a discussion between this waiter and an older waiter and then the younger dude disappears and the older one comes over to get my food order. I again mention the tea and he says nothing, then says "oh, I guess he [other guy] is making some for you". Clearly he's not sure. I still don't have water. Neither of these waiters come back to check on me. The older one is behind the sushi bar beside the chefs on the computer/cash register for like eight minutes, typing. He looks like Geordi on Star Trek reprogramming an antimatter reactor or something up in there. I cannot imagine what he has to do with the ordering/billing system so long. I finally flag down another server, a lady, and request water. The younger waiter returns in a flash, very apologetic and says he can make me some iced green tea. He brings it and water a few minutes later. The drama of many servers and no clue what's going on continued throughout the entire time I was there. The older waiter, bringing me my spicy tuna salad, kinda slid it over to me, bumping his arm into my shoulder and acting in a manner that I would be surprised at if, say, a friend passed me chips with this indifference while watching a bball game on TV even: it wasn't just casual, it was nearly rude. It wasn't appropriate for a waiter in a restaurant, certainly. I didn't say anything though. I am pretty chill and laid-back and on one hand didn't care, but still. You don't need to call me "sir", you don't need to act like the customer is always right, but dude: don't basically toss food at someone. Set it down so they see it being presented and announce what it is, wait to see if they have questions. You'd even get that at Olive Garden, yo. So on to the food: I ordered a spicy tuna salad, a Philly roll, a yellowtail roll, and tuna and salmon nigiri. I am pretty much a purist about sushi. I take sushi and seafood in general very seriously. I have written reviews for several magazines of restaurants, including Japanese ones. And with all that said, I can honestly say I was very, very, impressed by the quality of the fish here and the composition of the rolls. The Philly roll may have been the best I've ever had. The tuna nigiri was one very fresh and tasty piece of tuna and I ordered a second one because it was so good. The spicy tuna salad was alright but too salty--its marinade was just too salty. However, again, all the fish used here was superb. The chef looked Japanese and seemed to be totally on top of his game. His assistant sushi chefs were actually functioning as sushi sous-chefs to him, a rarity in Florida. This wasn't just three chefs in a row but a master assisted by his staff. I cannot explain how a sushi chef of such acumen doesn't notice the performance of his front-of-house people, but whatever. He apparently doesn't. Oh. In addition, their prices are much cheaper than many sushi bars in Florida. Nice. I would go back. I would give it five stars for the quality of food, and I was tempted to do such and neglect to even mention the waitstaff because I don't want to make enemies out of them as I DO want to go back, and go back soon. My friends and I just checked and to our dismay the restaurant is shut on Sundays so we can't go tomorrow. This is sad. I really, really, love the sushi here (and I've eaten at Kyo-Ya in San Francisco, once considered the best sushi outside of Japan) but I don't get what's up with the front-of-house. And again, I don't think the staff is lazy but just not organized. Maybe if they knew they were working for possibly one of the top sushi chefs in Florida they'd improve? Because they are. read more

The sushi menu isn't on their website (I hope they rectify that soon), but I took pictures of their sushi menu book and posted for your reference (check out the cheap prices!). This place has no visible sign, looks rough from the outside, and could be misleading. But venture onward! Our favorite rolls were the Smoking Salmon Lava (by far the best!), the OMG roll, and the Sunset Scallop roll. Stopped by Cafe du Japon on our adventure from Orlando to St. Augustine- THANK GOODNESS FOR YELP. We would have NEVER found this place if it wasn't for the reviews of all those that came before us. I almost reconsidered my "5 star" review now that I am re-reading the reviews from my fellow yelpers... Free green tea?!?! wtf, I guess you need to make sure you request that free stuff... ANYWAYS, be careful- you might just drive by 306 seabreeze... There is no obvious signage and this place is a hole in the wall. Additionally, don't be scared away by the ambiance here... These floors could use a good scrub down... Now let me get to the 'meat' of this review. The sushi is amazing. And if you do want meat, they do offer a crispy chicken jalapeño roll with your name on it! We ordered the edamame, seaweed salad, tropical roll, jalapeño shrimp roll, fried California roll, and the fried eel roll. I tried to put pictures of all the rolls on Yelp. We were so full we could barely finish all the delicious Japanese bites. My favorite was probably the tropical roll with the salmon and mango but the fried eel was so savory it is hard to decide! We also had an ice tea. All this for $33!! We had half the food at disney world for twice the price! This place is truly a glorious 'hole.' read more

Sure, the other reviews mostly rave about this place, but come on - it's sushi, so of course it's going to be good, right? But the freshness and food quality were nearly outdone by the presentation of the sushi. Beautiful designs added to the great flavors and creative options available. We are so happy we came here! No idea what the sushi tastes like, but the service is TERRIBLE! We got there at 6:30 and because of phase two restrictions there were not too many customers. We sat outside and ordered our sushi and waited. After bringing us our water we never saw our server again (except when she came out to clean a table).
