Came to Cafe Mochiko for a Saturday night dinner. There was about an hour wait but it was so worth it. The restaurant is cute and cozy and can I mention that the bathroom has a bidet?! Yes, a bidet with all the works - heated seat, rear wash, front wash, a bum DRYER. All the things you didn't know you needed. That aside, the food was absolutely wonderful. The burger was juicy and flavorful. It had two patties that were cooked perfectly medium so you could still enjoy the quality and taste of the meat. The fries were double fried and super crispy. The Cincinnati-Style ramen was also really great. The noodles were some of the best noodles I've had in Cincy and the flavor was spot on Cincinnati chili. The egg was soft boiled and a nice addition and there was plenty of meat and cheese! Service could have been slightly better but that was probably just due to it being so busy. Finally had a weekday off work, and I was able to check out Mochiko! I was ordering pastries only, so I was able to walk up to the window and order. First I tried the ube croissant which was delicious! The filling on the inside was light, yet creamy & the croissant was flaky-as it should be I also had another baked good that tasted like the softest everything bagel bites filled with cream cheese. Really loved the dinner we had here! We started with the chicken karaage and it's probably the best chicken karaage I've had to date! My only reasoning for 4 over 5 stars is while the ramen was good, in comparison to other ramen I've had it was not as flavorful as I had hoped. Our server was also great and very attentive. That ramen though!! This place is a little gem tucked away in East Walnut Hills, across the street from GCBH. In the morning, they serve Asian style pasties and coffee. In the evening, they transform into a quaint little dinner spot. If you're planning on dinner, I recommended arriving right when they reopen in the evening, as the space is somewhat small and pretty dang popular. The menu is small but the few things that they make, they make very well. It also changes week to week, meaning that you'll have no issues with variety if you become a frequent patron. When I visited, my eyes were bigger than my stomach, allowing me to try a variety of menu items. The karaage chicken was very tasty. I believe it is always on the menu as a starter, but don't quote me on that. The ramen was amazing. I hadn't found ramen this good in this city until Cafe Mochiko. For dessert, we tried the banana, ginger, nectarine cake. It was light, with just the right amount of sweetness. It was so great that I grabbed a piece to go for a family member. My husband and I decided to do a day trip to Cincinnati to see the cherry blossoms. I was so happy to have found this place on Instagram last minute. This place kept popping up so I had to do more investigation. It looked like they have only been in their current location for a week or 2 and the pictures of lines I saw were long! They have a small limited menu when we went but everything was delicious. It was great they allowed us to call ahead to place our order and give them a time for pick up. They also allowed you to have some morning pastry set aside to be picked up with dinner. They currently do not have dine in service and have a window to order and checkout. My husband liked the flavor of Katsu Sando the best but I really enjoyed my Jiro Don! The cabbage had so much flavor, the pork chop was delicious, and rice was just the perfect compliment to it all. This was my first time trying a mochi donut. It was good but I can only imagine how much better it would be fresh in the morning. The Ube Halaya Croissant kept well through the day and was delicious as well. We loved everything. I just saw on Instagram they are trying out a 15min pop up ramen bar and I am dying to go back to try it! Came to this exquisite spot because of future brother-in-law. He's a New Yorker and has an impressive knowledge of food. He heard about the James Beard award given to Cafe Mochiko and our visit makes us think they need more. We ordered 3 apps and 3 entrees. Cafe Mochiko is an absolute gem!  I've followed their Instagram for years and was finally able to fly out from California on vacation to Cincinnati with my family.  We ate there multiple times for their morning sweet and savory pastries as well as for dinner service and each time was excellent! From the moment you enter the café you can tell you're in for something special.  The attention to detail in every aspect of the restaurant is impressive.  You can tell the owners put a ton of thought into the aesthetic, which I can only describe as warm, classy, cozy, inviting, and fun.  Every time we visited we noticed something different.  The highlight for me is the bar, which is gorgeous and inviting.  The vintage VCR and old school CRT TV combo is so much fun and an awesome blast from the past!  One time the owners/chefs invited us to pick a movie from their selection which ranged from Die Hard to Pokémon and the kids loved it!  There's even a bidet in the restroom, very Japanese and a welcomed surprise.   Morning service is casual and fun.  Options are savory and sweet pastries and the drinks and coffee are all very refreshing and reasonably priced.  The pastries are literally award winning and there are no bad choices in the bunch.  The specials change weekly so there's always something new to try.  The pastries are baked to perfection and the creams are seriously next level and truly incredible; perfect sweetness, light, airy, and beautiful textured.  Everything is so good it's hard to pick a favorite but the everything cream cheese bao and kimchi and egg croissants stood out for me.  I highly recommend getting one of each and sharing with friends to try the menu.  The shokupan loaf is a must have.  Take some home, crisp up a slice on the frying pan with an egg or even by itself; so comforting!  Just a heads up, there's nearly always a line but it moves fairly quickly. Dinner at Cafe Mochiko was a stellar experience every time.  Come early if you want a table because all three times the dining room filled up within minutes.  The food is super fresh and flavorful, the wait staff warm and friendly, and the ambiance is inviting, classy, warm and cozy.  I've been fortunate enough to have access to excellent SoCal food my entire life and I can say with zero hesitation that the ramens, smashburgers, and karaage are some of the best bites I've had in my 40 years on earth; my mouth is watering just thinking about them again as I write this review.  Every table ordered the Karaage (japanese fried chicken) and it was no wonder why; absolutely mind blowing how perfectly seasoned and cooked it was.  The smash burger is large, filling and seriously satisfying.  The milk bun is unreal, just enough bite on the outside and warm and fluffy on the inside.  Fries are cooked to perfection.  The ramens are the best I've ever had but my favorite was the Shoyu, which was deeply satisfying and highly slurpable.  The broth is the perfect blend of umami and sweetness and the noodles are perfect.  None of this comes as any surprise since the noodles are handmade fresh with imported Japanese flour and the broth is made with only the best soy sauce, also straight from Japan.  The chashu (pork) and egg are cooked to perfection. The appetizers are no slouch either!  You would be fine ordering any or all of them as they each have their own distinct textures and flavor profiles.  If you can only choose one, make it the mochi mochi panic, it's exceptional and I don't know where else you can get something like it.  The broccoli and pickled appetizers both add some freshness and brightness to cut through all the savory options. Between the welcoming ambiance, outstanding food, and kind staff/service, I can easily call Cafe Mochiko my new favorite restaurant.  There's no pretentiousness here, just incredibly satisfying comfort food made by some seriously talented and hardworking chefs.  Each time we visited, my wife and I noticed people from all walks of life enjoying their meals, which is always a sign of a place with stellar food and good vibes.  It comes as no surprise that Cafe Mochiko has been recognized by Bon Appetite and nominated for James Beard awards.  My only wish is that I was closer by so I could go every week. read more

Lucky enough to walk in and grab a spot. In for dinner, but was dying for an iced coffee. The server working only worked evenings, and it wasn't something they typically had on the evening menu, but she figured it out and went the extra mile to get me one. Gave us a detailed run down of the menu and made suggestions based on what we were looking for. Some people complain about the amount of seating here, but I don't find a problem with it. It's a cafe. Not an Applebees. Stinks that it can be hard to get in but that's just how it is. They maintain their cafe aesthetic and can focus on the quality of the food, which is fantastic. Got the Karage and the Junk Ramen. Karage was some of the best Ove had, probably the best in Cincy I've had so far. The junk ramen was very good too, especially for garlic lovers. Two of the items were incorrect by the time we got someones they had to get someone else who then said do we want it fixed? Its more then a bit frustrating when half the table is already almost done and then someone is like do u want your correct order.. As someone who is grown up in the culture, the Ramen is definitely not authentic more of a modern day twist, and changed to whatever they want to call it. I personally will not be coming back, not just because of the service or the pricing for the food but I did not enjoy this so called "Ramen". Ever since trying Ichiran in Tokyo, I've been on the hunt for similar quality ramen back home stateside. Cafe Mochiko offers some of the best I've had comparable to some of the best in NYC and the West Coast. The noodles are freshly made in house and al dente. Soup flavor heart-warming and soft boiled egg cooked perfectly. Piping hot when it comes out, you only get 15 minutes to eat it under current rules. The ramen is the star and the chef wants you to focus on the food when in the restaurant. Prior to opening their brick and mortar store, I've had their baked goods - delicious as well! The prices are high for ramen in Cincinnati but I think well-worth it when you compare to similar high-quality freshly made pasta at Sotto. Erik and Elaine deserve to be celebrated and supported for their efforts. Go check them out! Tips for the owners: 1. Post your ramen offerings for any particular day/week online. This is your best stuff. Make it known! I'd love to try your tonkotsu or wontonmen one day, but it's hard to figure out when you're offering it. 2. Offer kaedama. Maybe have people decide when ordering and give them 5 extra minutes. I would have loved some today. Edit: Back again the day after for bakery. They run of things quick so get there early! I also tried the everything bagel danish as well as the pork bao and i had to try the tea they had. It was all so fresh and the unique taste was one to remember. The tea was very good with an earthy green tea base and they offer milk alternatives as well that pair deliciously. Staff was so friendly and the inside is adorable!! We live 90 minutes away, but this has quickly become a destination spot for us (when accompanied by some other cultural event that brings us to town). I'm really in it for the savory stuff, but we also never leave without dipping a toe in the baked goods as well. The beautiful ramens are a must -- rotating menu items often mean you may be getting something different than you've had before, but that's more of a plus than anything. And the Cincinnati chili style ramen (if it's available) is more than a head-turner, it's probably a mind-changer for a lot of people. Our most recent visit coincided with the autumn festival, so we treated ourselves to mooncakes -- definitely the freshest I've ever had the pleasure of trying. Servers are busy but attentive here. Bottom line for me is that I feel like I'm getting a level of quality that merits an experience, not just a quick meal, with a relatively casual vibe and reasonable prices.
