walking into greenspot feels like stepping onto the set of diners, drive-ins and dives, the kind of classic diner that has survived generations by doing simple, comforting food really well.
we stopped by around 2:30 pm on a friday as a party of three and were lucky to grab one of the last available booths. seating is tight, and it's easy to see why the place stays so busy. many customers seemed to be grabbing their meals to go, while the dining room had a steady stream of people coming and going.
wanting to try a couple of montreal classics, we asked our server, nicholas, for his recommendations and ended up ordering the small bonheur d'occasion and the jumbo platter.
the bonheur d'occasion was pure comfort food. a generous pile of fries was topped with sautéed peppers, mushrooms, onions, rich gravy, and fresh squeaky cheese curds. every bite was savoury, hearty, and satisfying, while the fresh curds delivered that unmistakable squeak and creamy bite that makes this style of dish so enjoyable.
the jumbo platter was equally generous, loaded with montreal smoked meat and classic diner sides. if you've never had montreal smoked meat, it's cured with a blend of spices before being smoked and steamed until tender, giving it its signature smoky, peppery flavour. the fries were a little softer than i prefer, but the vinegar based coleslaw and crisp pickle added a welcome brightness that balanced the richness of the meat.
the menu is extensive, with everything from all day breakfasts and burgers to hot dogs, smoked meat sandwiches, and other diner favourites. whatever you order, come hungry. the portions here are no joke.
there were a couple of nostalgic touches i wish we could have experienced. the tabletop jukeboxes no longer work, and unfortunately, the milkshake machine had broken down earlier that day. apparently, our timing was just unlucky, so hopefully it's back up and running soon.
what really made the visit memorable, though, was the hospitality. everyone was welcoming, and nicholas took the time to chat with us, answer our questions, and recommend dishes without making us feel rushed. that kind of genuine service is becoming harder to find.
greenspot isn't polished or trendy, and that's exactly the point. it's a place that has stood the test of time by doing what it does well: serving hearty comfort food, generous portions, and warm hospitality. if you're looking for a taste of old school montreal, this is one stop that's absolutely worth making.
