greenspot has been serving montreal comfort food since the 1940s, back when a hot dog cost just 20 cents. decades later, it's still a true montreal institution, holding onto its old school diner charm with vintage touches, generous portions, and the kind of friendly service that makes you feel like you've stumbled into a neighbourhood favourite that's been around forever. walking into greenspot feels like stepping onto the set of diners, drive-ins and dives, the kind of classic diner that has survived generations by doing simple, comforting food really well. we stopped by around 2:30 pm on a friday as a party of three and were lucky to grab one of the last available booths. seating is tight, and it's easy to see why the place stays so busy. many customers seemed to be grabbing their meals to go, while the dining room had a steady stream of people coming and going. wanting to try a couple of montreal classics, we asked our server, nicholas, for his recommendations and ended up ordering the small bonheur d'occasion and the jumbo platter. the bonheur d'occasion was pure comfort food. a generous pile of fries was topped with sautéed peppers, mushrooms, onions, rich gravy, and fresh squeaky cheese curds. every bite was savoury, hearty, and satisfying, while the fresh curds delivered that unmistakable squeak and creamy bite that makes this style of dish so enjoyable. the jumbo platter was equally generous, loaded with montreal smoked meat and classic diner sides. if you've never had montreal smoked meat, it's cured with a blend of spices before being smoked and steamed until tender, giving it its signature smoky, peppery flavour. the fries were a little softer than i prefer, but the vinegar based coleslaw and crisp pickle added a welcome brightness that balanced the richness of the meat. the menu is extensive, with everything from all day breakfasts and burgers to hot dogs, smoked meat sandwiches, and other diner favourites. whatever you order, come hungry. the portions here are no joke. there were a couple of nostalgic touches i wish we could have experienced. the tabletop jukeboxes no longer work, and unfortunately, the milkshake machine had broken down earlier that day. apparently, our timing was just unlucky, so hopefully it's back up and running soon. what really made the visit memorable, though, was the hospitality. everyone was welcoming, and nicholas took the time to chat with us, answer our questions, and recommend dishes without making us feel rushed. that kind of genuine service is becoming harder to find. greenspot isn't polished or trendy, and that's exactly the point. it's a place that has stood the test of time by doing what it does well: serving hearty comfort food, generous portions, and warm hospitality. if you're looking for a taste of old school montreal, this is one stop that's absolutely worth making. read more

I hadn't been here in several years and was so happy to see that it hasn't changed... still busy as ever, still an affordable and extensive menu and still serving up diner fare that hits the spot (or the green spot ha ha). We had breakfast, a Western sandwich for me and a 2-egg plate for my companion. The sandwich comes with a healthy portion of breakfast potatoes (about CAD 9) and the eggs came with potatoes, toast, bacon, ham, sausage, pancakes and beans (about CAD 15). Stopped at Greenspot for lunch on the way to Quebec City and now, after maneuvering through a web of poutineries, this is my top spot! The gravy was deeply beefy and almost herbal but I was surprised at almost how light the entire bite was. The fries could have been a bit crisper in my opinion but the curds did have a good squeak. It was one of the more savory poutines we had and I think I definitely enjoyed these more than those that leaned sweet. We also added a jumbo smoked meat sandwich and a Greek salad. The meat sammy was stacked tall and the meat had pretty good flavor to boot. I also appreciated that it was on the leaner side. The Greek salad, on one hand, wasn't anything too special - just some additional tomatoes, onions, olives, and feta on iceberg lettuce but those wedges of tomatoes specifically were plentiful and so sweet! As part of my visit to Montreal, I made damn well sure to stop here. Greenspot was ranked high on my list for best poutine and it came through in the most beautiful way. The fries are crispy. The curds squeak like newborn babies. The gravy is deep and herbal and does not undo anything. In fact, it adds more to the plate. You will need to get something with it or your palate will be nauseated. Let me discuss the service for a moment. The servers are cute, peppy, with a dash of intelligence that is masked by perky smiles and awful dance moves. My server, as I witnessed, was singing and dancing throughout the restaurant, while never missing a beat with her orders and making her customers happy. Came here on a Thursday early afternoon for lunch. They were about half full which made it surprising we had to wait an extra 10 minutes to get seated. We weren't supplied menus after 5 minutes so we took the initiative to grab them from the front. Another 10 minutes after that we were provided with waters and our orders were taken. We shared Meat lover hot dog, large tico nico poutine, steamed hotdog. The meat sauce over the 100% beef hot dog was tomato sauce based with a heaping portion of French fries. The steamed hotdog had salted cabbage, mustard and chopped white onion. The gravy was extra salty and hot over the cheese curd and fries. The pepperoni slices and pieces of bacon provided an extra chew and blast of flavor. Overall, food was good but service was incredibly slow. I'm not sure if it was because we looked to be the only tourists as other people were served in a fraction of the time it took to get seats. Growing up I always went to green stop located on monk in vile emard but this location is called green spot. Poutine= mehhhh I mean curd cheese 10/10 solid cold huge chunks. Fries are way to big half cooked half not. Gravy taste like they dropped the salt shaker in it. I absolutely love the old-school genuine spirit of this establishment. The service is solid and the food is without pretention. If you are looking for a diner meal, this is as good as it gets! I basically got the largest breakfast platter available. Two pancakes, baked beans, house potatoes, ham, bacon, sausage, smoked meat, fruit and 2 eggs for under $15. Holly Molly that is a good deal. Super cool 50's diner just around the corner from Atwater market. Wifey and I stopped in for lunch before going to the market. The decor and vibe are classic diner, while the 50's rock and roll music sets a fun atmosphere. The food was good, pretty much what I would expect from this kind of place. My double cheese burger was decent, although the patties were over-cooked and dry. The outside of the patties were crispy from the flattop. I assume they used a press to get them that crisp but probably pressed the life out of them while doing so. I found two patties to be one too many and ended up pulling one off the burger. Less was more in this case and I enjoyed the rest of the burger. The fries were OK. Barb had the chicken pita and liked it although she took about 2/3's of the tzatziki sauce off. Again, less was more. On the positive side, service was friendly and excellent! Prices were very modest especially given the portion size. Loved the cozy booths and jukeboxes, loved the crowded atmosphere filled with everyone from vintage-wearing hipsters, grandparents and their grandchildren, young families, glamorous couples, ordinary-working Joes, and more. Everyone under the sun. This is my vibe, and I can certainly appreciate diner food. Not expecting fancy, not at all, but comfort food that fills the stomach and calms the nerves. Unfortunately, my ham and swiss crepe was just not good. The batter tasted like thinned out pancake mix - not the buttery sponginess of a true crepe - and the cheese had not even melted. It was still in it's square form. The hash browns had all the requisite crunchy bits, so high praise from me, but by husband found them bland. His ham and fried eggs were okay, he shared, with his brown toast being his favorite part of the meal. Though we waited a few after being seated for one of the busy, scurrying waitresses to say hello, once ours appeared, she did so with two mugs of hot coffee. She didn't even ask: she read our minds. High marks for that gesture! I would go back, perhaps for lunch, and order their poutine if I was in the area, but I wouldn't make a special trip from another neighborhood (I find Beauty's in Le Plateau much, much better). I'd go again for breakfast and stick to something like eggs and bacon, better still on a breakfast sandwich. I'm not sure what bagels they use - St.Vinateur or Fairmount. They didn't say and I didn't inquire. For breakfast for two, plus tip, for under $25. That's a price that you can't argue with, especially in a city that seduces you with a plethora of dining options. One could easily spend twice that amount on avocado toast at another cafe. You won't find avocado toast on the menu here, and come to think of it, that's a very fine thing indeed. We dropped in here as a snack/late lunch from driving out of Quebec City. At 2:30 pm this place had some old fries. Like fried more than 30 minutes ago fries. But out of all the places we ate poutine in Canada, this had the freshest Cheese curds of all. Though my partner and I disagree, I think Greenspot has one of the best poutines in Montreal. The cheese curds here are literal perfection, perfect quantity and mouthwatering squeak. The fries are always made fresh and don't get too soggy. The gravy is very dark and rich here and I love that. My boyfriend doesn't like this so maybe it's not for everyone. We were a group of four looking for a place to grab Sunday brunch so we came here at the suggestion of a friend. Greenspot is an old school diner that has been around for years and serves as a reminder of St-Henri's working class roots. While it does get busy on a Sunday we were seated quickly because the dining room is sufficiently large. The menu features all the breakfast classics like bacon and eggs, pancakes, etc. The meals all include coffee or tea and the wait staff come around regularly to top up your mugs. I got a deluxe plate which featured a bit of everything and I enjoyed it although the bacon could have been a bit crispier and the pancakes a little fluffier. This review also wouldn't be complete without giving a shout out to our great waitress. She handled us swiftly and accommodated some of our special requests with ease. One of my friends, who had ordered the omelette was hoping to switch up his toast for French toast and we originally thought it wouldn't be possible since French toast was only listed as a main and not a side. She however managed to make it happen. Also, you know what else I like about Greenspot? It is so affordable. I think my meal was less than $15 after tip. The fries are on the thicker side and the gravy has a very deep flavor. The poutine gravy definitely seems like it cooks for a pretty long time, so it tastes pretty salty. Greenspot is a Montreal classic. It opened in 1947 corner of Greene and Notre Dame (hence the name Greenspot) and served up just hamburgers and hotdogs. In 1989 it moved across the street but kept its 1947 decor and expanded it's menu to breakfast and lunch. I really liked their breakfast, it's a classic diner breakfast with huge portions for just $10. I highly recommend getting a breakfast plate with their smoked meat, it's delicious! I also love their hotdogs and poutine! I tried their green spot hotdog, which is topped with a pickle mayo sauce. Looking forward to trying their other hotdogs next time! After a cheeseburger craving I went to this place after work at 11h pm and OMG I can't believe how crowded it was. Even if it's one of the few places still open at time I never expected to be that crowded and people were also very very loud . I got me 2 cheeseburgers which were delicious so it at least was that . But staff were running left and right as how many customers they were. Sure everything said above don't really help giving only 3 stars and as much as good was delicious there were moths flying inside that restaurant which one even hit me in my right ear so even if I wanted I couldn't give more then that for now at least. As I took take out order I might be considering returning there sitting at a table but most definitely never at 11h pm on a Friday night. I remember when it was still across the street on the south side of Notre Dame, in the 1980s! They still have the old table top jukeboxes, tho sadly they don't work anymore. It has a rather eclectic menu with a long list of poutine, standard breakfast platters, Italian, Greek, burgers, salads... everyone should be able to find something. Despite being very busy during lunch, we were able to get a booth without waiting and had the choice of breakfast and lunch items. It has a bit of an American diner feel with bar stools, unlimited coffee, huge portions, large menu and quick service. I had the chicken souvlaki skewers which had seasoned rice, thick cut fries, salad and tzatziki. Overall a very substantial meal for the price. The chicken was moist, and well seasoned as was the rice. The fries were similar to those used in poutine so extra thick and soft...not my favorite. I loved that this place had breakfast and lunch all day so we did not have to choose. One thing is it took us a while to realize that we had to go to the counter to pay. I've heard friends raving about this restaurant just next to Atwater Market and since I was nearby on Saturday, a friend purposed to hit the spot. I was pretty amazed by the old-schooled decor. The food is also amazing. I ordered a smoked meat platter which came with a coleslaw salade and fries on the side. The platter was huge and everything tastes fresh. I think their smoked meat is better than the famous Schwartz's, it was juicy and surprisingly I didn't feel uncomfortable afterwards though the meal was heavy.
