Interesting place! Definitely the most "hipster" spot in Downtown Frederick

I love this place. Arguably the best food you can get in a cafe in Frederick. I haven't tried anything beyond the brunch menu but everything on the brunch menu seems well thought out and tastes good. The prices are significantly higher than what one would ordinarily pay for brunch and the specialty drinks usually take a while, but again, all great stuff. The atmosphere is unique and clean. Love that they put original, local artwork on the walls year round. I was really interested in an artist they frequently chose to put up (Goodloe Byron) one morning. I got in contact with him and he painted a very large 3 panel photo for my house. Thanks 'Nola! read more

I have visited this place 3 times. Every experience has been wonderful. Anything you get here is tasty. The German chocolate latte is out of this world. Love the window tables that peak out onto the historic streets of Frederick. I came in during lunch hour which is usually a busy time. I saw the perfect table nestled in the corner, facing the street. Being by myself, I felt a little guilty asking if I could sit at the 4 person table. But the employees there did not mind and let me sit there anyway so I could study, drink coffee, eat delicious food, and people watch. I had a great time. Thank you Café Nola! read more

I really wanted to love this place, but it was just "okay". I went on a Saturday morning before they were busy. I asked the hostess if I was able to sit outside and she mumbled something along the lines of "we rotate customers with each server so you have to sit over here". Okay, that's odd, but I didn't mind the corner inside. My server was pleasant and suggested a latte when I was choosing between two. The latte was beautiful, but I didn't taste any of the rose in it so it was underwhelming. It didn't take long for my food to come out, but it wasn't very hot. My scrambled eggs were a bit cold and had some brown on them from being over cooked. I chose to have a cup of fruit on the side and it included a few grapes and orange slices. I thought orange slices with the peel was such an odd item to have in a fruit cup since you can't use your fork to eat them. I don't think I'll give this place a second try, but maybe it's better at lunch and dinner! read more

I love this place. I love getting a cup of tea in the morning on the way to work - Try Gypsy Love (is that the name?) It has rose petals in it. Delicious. For lunch, I have tried the turkey avocado sandwich more times than I am willing to admit. The veggie sandwich is also really good. Love the cocktails. They went thru a period of time where service was hit or miss -- but I think they have ironed out the kinks, and look to be doing very well! read more

Dysfunctional wait staff. I watched my wife nearly finish her meal before my entree arrived. Waitress skirted by......she was unable to look me in the eyes. The $12.00 Thai Peanut Stir-fried Veggies on a bed of rice was a few vegetables on soggy rice soup. Not sure what I was eating... great sauce/soup....??? I SHOULD HAVE SENT IT BACK! Wife's house salad was a few leaves out of a bag with two pieces of tomatoes and no choice of dressing. Not going to give this place a second shot...... read more

Marinated portabella benedicts were a delish low carb high power breakfast. Eggs very soft, so request extra poaching if that bugs you.

What a shame. I'd been here a few times before and thought this place was decent, so when I heard Flying Dog was releasing a new beer here, I figured I'd go. Unfortunately, after the waitress gave us a spiel about the beer, she informed us the beer was gone, despite being introduced earlier that day. Then they didn't have the entrée we ordered. Then the food took forever to come out. Then the food was greasy and over-salted. Then they charged us for the beer they didn't have. Stick to The Orchard for this kind of veg-friendly, organic fare in Frederick; it's far superior. read more

My daughter and I went for brunch one Saturday after reading the yelp reviews. We had to wait about 20 min for a table. It is a small cozy place. We didn't mind since it was Saturday and the place WAS popular! First we both had the most delicious huge chai tea latte with a perfect milk leaf on top. The quiche was about average but the salad that came with it was really good! I ate them together and it was a very tasty and satisfying meal. My daughter enjoyed some kind of poached egg dish that she said was really good. When we visit DT Frederick again we will definitely return to Cafe Nola's!! read more

This place is good. The brunch food is really good- the infused cocktails are fantastic. The issue is the service is spotty- sometimes it takes me over an hour after being seated to get a cup of coffee and eggs with toast. No wonder there is always a wait! If you have time to kill this is a great place for a leisurely brunch but otherwise you are wondering where the heck your food is and what is everyone that works there doing?! read more

We recently went here for brunch. If I was able I'd actually give Cafe Nola 3 1/2 stars. Our waitress was as sweet as she could have been, and I loved my specialty coffee! I must admit that I was disappointed with my order - I got the huevos rancheros, which were plated very oddly - eggs on one tortilla, and condiments on the other. What I love about huevos rancheros is having a big pile of yummy ingredients, cutting into the eggs and having the yolks combine with the toppings, which soak into the tortillas and get more delicious with each bite. With this plating, you don't have this experience at all, and the flavors weren't very bold - so the dish was just mediocre. I did like the ambiance and my husband enjoyed his food, so I'd definitely like to give the place another chance! read more

I ordered an omelet with tomatoes, goat cheese, and something green (forgot what). There was nothing special about it. Nothing that Cafe Nola could say it's their creation. However, despite the minimal ingredients it was cooked perfectly and very good. The coffee there is good. I'm a coffee snob - I buy the organic coffee beans I get at the Common Market. I like Dublin Roasters. I don't like Starbucks and won't drink Dunkin Donuts, and definitely not McDs or 7-11 or Sheetz. The omelet came with fruit, which was ok. Could tell the oranges were not organic. Kind of plain tasting; same with the grapes and granny smith apples. The service was awesome! I sat outside and Marley was my server. There were cigarette ashes on the windowsill and cigarettes all over the sidewalk, which took a lot away from sitting outside. The sidewalk needs cleaning daily, but obviously this is not done. This is a good place with great food. The selection is decent. The food cooked well with a solid and delicious flavor. I had the 'pick me up' with loose leaf black tea and an americano to finish everything off. The food was very delicious; pouched eggs on point, the tea was light yet robust, the americano was mediocre, but most americanos are. This place was a bit loud. The staff did a fine job at keeping up with customers. No five stars because nothing wowed me. I'll return to try more and I may edited this review. If you want a good cafe with internet, this is a fine choice. read more

The service has definitely improved since a few experiences I had last summer, and at this point I usually go once or twice on a weekend for breakfast/brunch with my girlfriend. Pros -The food and service meets or exceeds expectations, although I can still see how some servers will leave diners scratching their heads. -Even though the coffee is brand-name (illy), I happen to think illy is the best, so it works well for me. -I feel very good about the quality of the ingredients. I've never had a problem with the food. Cons -The waits can be long. Not the restaurant's fault, but it may be difficult to get a table during peak times. -It is somewhat hipster, so if you don't like hipsters, and have a tendency to project your negative feelings onto the folks who work there, then I think this is not the place for you. -I think Nola still leaves a little to be desired around the edges in terms of organization; the attention to detail doesn't always seem to be there, e.g. do something about the tables being un-balanced, things like that. All in all, significantly improved service, and above average food. For a reasonable breakfast in Downtown Frederick, Nola is hard to beat. read more

This place is horrible! We went on a Saturday night and they didn't serve food after about 9pm. There was only one bathroom for men and woman and the one working bathroom was disgusting starting at 10pm there was no toilet paper. Drink prices were a little high and there isn't anyone waiting on tables after 9:30 I think. You have to go to the bar and fight other people to get a drink. I won't be back! read more

The bagels are the best I've had in Frederick yet. Mimosas are strong. They don't have pulp free orange juice but offered to strain it for me, which was nice. Service is a little slow, I wouldn't suggest going here if you're in a big rush. But a fun place to have brunch and relax. read more

If you are a hipster this is the place to be in Frederick. I was in from Detroit visiting a friend and we decided to pop in for food. I ordered the hanger steak. Omg. This was cooked PERFECTLY and was so delicious. The culinary fare here is legit. My friend only ordered a desert and it wasn't cooked through all the way. However, when we talked to the server the pastry chef was more than happy to re do it do it was perfect. I think that the timing was off because they timed it with my dinner. I really love going to Cafe Nola. It's a little pricy, but the food is fantastic. Coffee is deliciously made, whether you're doing espresso, hot coffee, or cold brew! I love all the staff. I rarely go any time other than for breakfast foods, which is funny because I really don't eat breakfast foods at any other restaurants - that's a meal I usually prefer to make myself. The one thing is that it can be too loud for an enjoyable, chatty meal, but overall it balances out. Really great tasting cocktails of all kinds, but we were bummed to see the infused liquors are made with very low-end alcohol. read more

I've been going to Cafe Nola for a long time... especially for the turkey burger. Imagine my disappoint today when the turkey burger could be used for a hockey puck. Also, let's talk about the service. Major disappointment. I needed something and had been looking for the waiter. When another waiter walked by I started to ask for my waiter but held back because this waiter rolled his eyes. He did come to my table with a better attitude though. He said that my waiter stepped out. When my waiter came back he did not come to my table for a full 10 minutes. Let me say that I am a 69 year old woman who enjoys going out. I am not pleased however when it is obvious that the younger crowd is waited on before me. I will go back to Cafe Nola but not for the turkey burger but hopefully for better food and service. Today's experience was totally out of character for Nola. I've been here numerous times. Cafe au lait was weak. The hummus was good but they spilt it on two plates for two of us and my friend didn't want hummus. Weird. We planned to eat lunch but left after appetizers. First experience with Cafe Nola- over 30 minute wait time with ten parties booked ahead of my girlfriend and me. At least we knew it was a popular place! We were hungry, though, so opted to return for their impressive latte at after lunch. We did, and upon our second (kind of) experience, found the level of both staff and beverages was without comparison. I love this place. I just recently moved to Frederick with my husband and two kids. It's absolutely family friendly. The food is fantastic and the servers are so nice to talk to. I'm a fan of the breakfast food. I order something different every time and I haven't been let down yet. I will say - it's unfortunate, but the only time I find myself writing a review is when I've had a horrible experience. There are a ton of great places in Frederick - and this used to be one of them. Sadly, it is no longer the case - unless you are fond of pretentiousness. First, on the positive side - it does have a nice ambiance - and it's great that you can sit outside. The coffees are still quite good. The food - Nola used to be one of our "go-to" places for the food. Things changed a little over a year ago. The food took a huge nose-dive. I don't need to be wowed with diverse ingredients and explosive flavor pallets. Rather, I'd prefer something done well. Most of the items just aren't. The drinks - this is what really got me. I was hoping to see more local craft items available. I like the local brewery scene - but they don't carry a lot. When I asked, the apparent "bar manager" he said they only take exceptional local items - so they are very picky. Really? They infuse some cheap vodkas with store-bought ingredients like you can do at home and call that "craft cocktails"? Maybe I just caught him on an off-day, but the bar manager really turned me off - the local craft scene in Frederick is exploding - and I would much rather support an establishment that also supports local - something that is lacking there. If you are looking for better food and drink head a couple doors down to Jojos. Much nicer people, much better selection, and local beers and drinks. read more

Took my parents and boyfriend here for Mother's Day brunch a few Sunday's back. We had to wait a ridiculous long time but it gave us the opportunity to further explore downtown Frederick. This once gem used to be my favorite brunch spot, unfortunately not anymore and I'm hoping this review help to get things back on track. My last three in a row experiences there have left me too light in the pocket for such disappointment. Twice my steak and eggs, was cooked beyond palatable, shoe leather with rubber disks, despite my rare and over-easy ordering. By the time it was remade my companions had long since finished their dishes and the wait just ruins the whole having a nice brunch experience, which is half of what we are paying the $$$ for. Their Mexican Hash had been my top favorite from day one, until they changed it, not only in name but in preparation. It was not longer served in a warm cast iron skillet, but instead in a regular bowl, which changed its flavor and appeal but I would still get it once in a while despite feeling it was no longer worth the price. After having my steak and eggs ruined twice in a row I decided to go back to the hash on the last visit. Big mistake. To start the serving had shrunk again to an even smaller bowl. Even worse I could barely identify the potatoes, they were chopped to a ridiculous small size and were less than half the normal amount. The peppers were all still raw, crunchy, and so numerous it might as well be called a pepper bowl. Barely any chorizo to be seen. One poached egg was runny and the other over cooked. How does that even happen if they are cooked fresh at the same time?!! The same was served to my companion. I had brought my cousin to this brunch, I recommended this "hash"to him, and I was apologizing to him for the next hour for taking him here. Having to pay the $40.00 bill was insult to injury for these garbage bowls. Our stomachs and wallets would have botgbetter off with skillet breakfasts at Denny's. read more

I can only assume that the staff is trained not to smile or be friendly to customers because I have never received a positive experience there. I have grown up in Frederick in my entire life and have never experienced such rudeness or hostility at a restaurant until the most recent visit to Cafe Nola. Do not get me wrong, the food is amazing. However, I went to a Cafe Nola on a Friday night to support my cousin's band since they were playing a set there. I bought a few drinks, and was having a great time until I closed my tab and the bartender was basically DEMANDING me for tips, expressing "if you're not going to tip me, don't even bother on coming back." -- in which I gave him a tip (more than 20%) and he proceeded to shake his head as if he was too proud to take the tip that I was so graciously willing to give him. The bartender's tone in how he approached the situation left me feeling so uncomfortable and that I had to leave the restaurant because I was having panic attack. I was heavily breathing outside of the restaurant and strangers came up to me asking if I was okay and if I needed anything. I honestly hope whoever that bartender was feels absolutely awful, because treating your customers like that is NOT what I expected out of such a nice restaurant. I always thought of Frederick as a family friendly place until this incident. I am never giving this place of business my money again. read more
