My husband and I stopped for dinner last night and the service and food were amazing. I had the spinach salad and he had the French dip. Afterwards we had ice cream. Everything was delicious. However, it was expensive at $100 including three drinks and a generous tip. I came to the Derby previously with my daughter in law and grandson and we thoroughly enjoyed our meal that time as well. Crab cake - terribly salty, no lump meat, blob or crab and mayo puree. Image less than half and it left me feeling ill for hours. "Pulled pork sundae" - an abomination that that admittedly should never have been ordered, but so disgusting I can't believe anyone ever allowed it on the menu. 3 bites eaten. I do not understand the 3.5 average stars here. Today we visited for lunch and the Derby (we want to call it the Brown Derby), hit it out of the park. Everything we ordered was that good. Cocktails (decadent, I know) were hit-it-out-of-the-park delicious, and our meals were the best lunches we've had in quite a while. The kitchen can run circles aroind several more established venues in the region. The Rockfish Tacos and the Sunrise Burger, both simple could not be beat. Tasty homemade fries with just the right amount of seasoning. Nothing had ever seen the inside of a freezer and you could taste the difference. Our waitress Chandler (a female) was as rock-solid professional as they come. Ask for her. We cannot wait to return for dinner, as well as lunch again to work our way through the menu. One note on the costs here: the Derby is not a value proposition. Those searching for the $10 to $15 lunch may need to search elsewhere. Our two lunch entrees, two cocktals, taxes and generous tip for Chandler (meet her - you would too) set us back a little over $60. Be forewarned. It's worth it though. read more

My second visit to The Derby was as good as my first. The portions here for the price are amazing, as is the quality of the food. We over-ordered our last visit, and focused this time on the chopped Italian salad and wings. Absolutely splendid. This is such a great restaurant. They have an adjacent bar and ice cream shop on the property, along with outdoor seating. I can't wait to return. read more

This place is seriously awesome!!! My husband and I stopped here for lunch with our 2 kids after church one Sunday and we wish we could've stayed longer! They had live music on the back patio from 11-2 for "Sunday Funday" and the singer was legit good! The whole theme of the restaurant is super cool... I love the decor on the inside and the outside patio is super cute. Our server was super friendly and I was very grateful for the extra side of their homemade ranch that she gave me for my leftovers :) We were really impressed with our meals, as well as the looks of everyone's meals being delivered to the tables around us lol. Even our kids meals were great... the KIDS cheese pizza was huge AND yummy and our daughter's mac & cheese was definitely homemade. The Chicken Cobb Salad was very fresh with tons of avocado and I loved my shrimp salad wrap. The prices are very reasonable too for the amount of food you get. Where they "get you" though is with the cocktails (that have no prices on the menu). My mimosa was $12, which is high considering it was brunch. We were also bummed that we only got to experience the brunch menu since it was before 2pm on a Sunday but we will definitely be back soon (hopefully without kids! Charming restaurant on Main Street in New Market! We dined on the back porch with our four legged friend. The staff was friendly and accommodating and brought our dog a water bowl. I ordered the California Chicken Wrap with $2 up charge for onion rings and my husband had the Mediterranean Veggie Wrap with Grilled Chicken add on. We both enjoyed our meals. They had a guitar player on Thursday night on the back patio with tables and umbrellas. The musician was very talented with a great set list. read more

We usually go there for breakfast 3 or 4 times per year. The food and service had always been really good until today. We arrived and were promptly seated and drink orders taken we got coffee that was good. Then ordered she got 1 pancake with crispy bacon and i ordered the eggs scrapple toast and home fries. her pancakes came cold with no syrup and frozen butter that could not be spread and had to ask for syrup with half cooked limp greasy bacon. My eggs were surprisingly cooked well but my toast was cold and again frozen butter that could not be spread. All of this came to 38.00 a little steep for food that was not thoughtfully served and no return to ask how everything was and had to ask for coffee refills, we wont go back. read more

After leaving Baltimore and heading west, we stopped in New Market to have dinner tonight at The Derby. My wife had the huge crab cake sandwich with potato salad and I had the Stromboli. Everything was delicious and filling. Besides our attentive waitress, we were visited by two other members of their staff (owners/managers) to check on our thoughts about our food quality and service. Very disappointed. Such a fantastic location and great atmosphere. We've gone many times since they opened and it's really gone downhill. The service is truly lacking. My husband and I arrived Monday around 5:00pm, parked in the back and walked through the outdoor seating since we were wanting to sit inside. We walked inside and a girl behind the counter wouldn't help us- she sent us back outside to then be seated inside. We get seated and wait no less than 20 minutes to be helped. There was only one other table with people in the entire area. Staffing wasn't the issue- I could see 5 people behind the counter but no one paying attention to the service. We saw our server twice- once for our drink order and again for our food order. That's it. No one checked to see if we needed refills. No one checked to see how our food was. We ordered the fried pickles which were actually really good! No plates given with them. When our food came, my husband's pizza was undercooked. The pizza pan itself should have been replaced long ago. He actually took his pizza home and finished cooking it in the oven. He also had to ask for a plate to eat with and the girl gave him a snack plate. A piece of pizza didn't even fit on it. I got the open faced roast beef sandwich and it did not have much flavor. It was just okay. There were also so many flies and gnats flying around the food- a gnat got stuck in my plate and I had to wipe it out with my napkin. Staffing was NOT the issue- poor management was. A similar experience happened when I took my parents there (again not busy) but poor service. We will not be back and will certainly not recommend. Super bummed. Don't make the same mistake. read more

I can come down here every time I visit family in Maryland. The wings are delicious. The beers are cold. And the staff is very friendly. The pizza is good and the calzone is delicious. I haven't had a bad meal yet. The outdoor space in good weather is awesome as well. I will continue to go here when ever I get the chance. Move to a new place, and expand your restaurants! We decided to try the Derby last night (it is the royal we, the decision was made, and we went, no votes were taken)! The chicken wings were perfect! Cheesy fries are also perfect! Fried pickles, well, perfect! Salmon (for the person who picked the place) was pronounced perfect. Burger (for the fried pickle consumer, as well, gone)! Overall we did delivery but decided next time we are going in person. The restaurant does the delivery, and they were (get this) 15 minutes early. The food was still hot! Overall a great dining experience. Good food always makes things perfect. Next time we are going to dive into their dessert menu!!!! Now, will there be a next time? The Derby has a variety of options without having an insanely long menu. Some of my favorites are the Cobb salad, mozzarella lancers, and the crabby pizza. Also, the macaroni salad is delicious! The location is great with a variety of seating including the separate bar area, indoor dining, outdoor deck dining, and outdoor patio dining. There's space and games for the kids to play, and there's ice cream out back! You'll regularly see the owners walking around checking to make sure their customers are enjoying their meal and experience. So awesome! read more

Food 10/10, outside space 6/10. I am not sure if I came to visit on an off day but I was disappointed with the overall cleanliness of the tables outside. The tables were very dirty, not wiped down at all- we cleaned the table ourselves when we sat down. At one point my brother in law accidentally spilled his drink on the table and an employee brought napkins to clean it up.. Now for the positives- the food is great! I LOVED the crab bruschetta and the crab dip was delicious. Their orange crushes are also great. There is so much potential for the Derby to be amazing! We were close to New Market today, so we decided to try The Derby, which we had wanted to do for a while now. After eating here, I'm wondering why we waited so long. We were promptly seated, and the food was EXCELLENT! We got the Crab Dip for an appetizer, which was tasty and the bread with it was amazing. I got the Chicken Parmesan with a Caesar salad and a side of their meatballs. My wife got the Chili Burger, which was huge and flavorful. Her side was potato salad, which was equally amazing. We got my son Pepperoni Pizza with fries, and it was also good. In addition to the food, the service was very good also. We have no complaints, and will definitely be back. read more

The Derby is located in Historic New Market and so far, the food we have tried have been yummy! I tried to call ahead to make a reservation, but the Derby doesn't take call ahead reservation. Although it wasn't a problem since our party of 9 was seated promptly for lunch. I ordered the seafood club, which is a crab cake, shrimp salad, bacon, lettuce and tomato in between two pieces of bread. The bread was perfectly toasted and it was delicious. Definitely a must try for seafood lovers. Then a few people at our table, ordered the French dip and were pleasantly surprised how tasty it was. The bread was soft and the meat was tender. It's good, for what it is, good bar like food, good portions, fairly priced, good service. We had the cheese fries for an appetizer. As the picture depicts, well executed and they were tasty! This was my second time at the Derby in the past couple of years and I can't say I'd go out of my way to go back. The food itself was good, but the rest left much room for improvement. For example, when I let my server know that my Pepsi had no carbonation and that they might want to check the CO2 levels, she looked very confused and didn't say a word. A few minutes later, I saw her pour the contents of a 2 liter Pepsi bottle into beverage cups for another table and I realized why she looked so confused. Instead of a soda fountain, they were using the flat contents of a 2 liter bottle. That in itself was no big deal, but also, even though it was a gorgeous day out, my sons wanted to sit indoors to avoid insects. Unfortunately, that didn't help as there were multiple flies at our table and others. One of my sons wanted to box up his meal just so that flies couldn't get to it and would rather eat it at home under the circumstances. Additionally, our server never checked in with us during our meal, regardless of the fact that it was not a busy time. As I said, the food was good, but based on the service, way they serve basic beverages and insect issues, there are other places I'd rather give my patronage to. read more

The Derby has a great outdoor space with lights, umbrellas and a separate bar. Definitely a chill, laid back vibe. I went on a Friday night and enjoyed music while we were eating. The food was just ok imo. Wings and crab dip were good, the chicken cheesesteak my husband got was outstanding. I ordered a Reuben that had potential but the meat was so rubbery and tough that I couldn't bite through it. Quite disappointed about that. They do have good crushes though and the service was friendly and timely. If I went back id go on a weekend to enjoy live music. I'd stick to pizza and burgers probably. read more

I was so pleasantly surprised at the service and quality of food here. It was my first time at The Derby, but my friend had been to this local spot several times. It is on a cute strip of the town and street parking was easy to find on a Saturday afternoon (perhaps because of COVID). Nonetheless, we walked in, and were warmly greeted by the staff and led to the outdoor seating area. All employees were wearing masks and meticulously wiping down menus and tables. (Yes!! Thank you!) I ordered a Spinach Salad with grilled chicken and honestly, I wasn't expecting much. But boy, was I pleasantly surprised! For $13, you get a pretty decently sized salad, and best of all, the chicken was warm and juicy! I was expecting cold dried chicken (as is what you'd usually expect of chicken when it's added in a salad), but THIS chicken was delicious and was honestly the highlight of this salad. The warm bacon balsamic vinaigrette was also the perfect combination to feta cheese and candied pecans. I dare say this was the best spinach salad I've had in Maryland--and trust me, I've had MANY. I didn't have anything else on the menu, but I'll surely be back to try other items in the near future. My friend had a Cuban panini, as that's usually his go-to and said it was good as always. Overall, the experience was great. The staff were attentive, clean, and kind. I would highly recommend dropping by for a bite or drink if you're in the area. I so badly want to love this place because it is super convenient and they have great orange crushes. Oh and the outdoor live music is awesome . The food is okay- not always consistent though. We love that it's a super family / kid friendly place. However the last time we went there was a large group of parents letting their young kids run wild in the outdoor section screaming and running in between tables-'something maybe I'd expect on a Saturday afternoon but definitely not 7:30 during the week. It went on for over an hour. We literally couldn't carry on a conversation. At one point We considered eating inside but there were a ton of flies inside the restaurant (hoping they weren't in the kitchen as well!) We had asked to speak to the owner to share our concerns - but after waiting 20 minutes he never came to our table so we just opted to leave . Super disappointing.
