These folks are totally on their game and worthy of a pilgrimage on the Tavern Trail. Dundee is a small gateway community on the scenic route to Backbone State Park, and the Bar and Grill a well known destination where bikers, car clubs, tractor rides, and everyone in the neighborhood rub shoulders, raise a glass or several, and indulge in great food from their postage stamp kitchen. It's pure tavern food at its most amazing best. Tenderloins, burgers, chicken strips, wings, great pizza, Friday Fish Fry, and absolutely awesome home made French fries are the heart of this comforting menu and guaranteed to satisfy. The Thursday wing special fills the place, and Friday Fish Fry packs even more folks in. I don't know how the servers keep up, but they never miss a beat. Hanging out here is a rural joy only known among the fields, hills, and hollows of this part of the country. My recent favorite here is the mushroom Swiss burger with home fries. The hand pressed burger is bigger than the bun, and dressed with plenty of cheese and mushrooms. Don't ruin this one with condiments. It's a thing of beauty without anything to distract from that simple perfection. The classic Iowa tenderloin is just that. Classic! Exactly the way they are supposed to be. You will never go wrong with one of these servings of hog heaven. Dundee pizza is a competitor too, but that's a separate review for another time. Just do it. Dundee Bar and Grill, another recipient of my personal 'Real Deal' award!

I would recommend making reservations as it was consistently busy. We opted for seats at the bar to avoid an hour wait. This place is tiny, so it would not be ideal for large groups. It would be difficult to accommodate someone who could not navigate stairs (there are both stairs to enter as well as a staircase for most of the dining space). Servers were friendly and helpful, the right amount of attentive. The food came out quickly. They offer light lunch, brunch, breakfast fare, with specials, and baked goods from Lola. A popular special is a homemade pop tart, which has rotating flavors (today was blueberry with lemon frosting). We opted for French Toast, pork belly, and the country skillet. Everything was delicious and portions were generous. All around a great find.

We found the 120-year-old Franklin Hotel, a historic landmark, and its restaurant on a Sunday morning for their breakfast buffet. I had to do it, as the hotel looks and acts the part of nostalgia, and its dining facility was so inviting. Greeted warmly by a pair of staff members, we were seated in the main dining hall, which looks like it probably did over 100 years ago. Loved the lighting and the overall decor. It was late in their buffet offering, so we did not have as many choices as those before us, but we had eggs made to order, then sampled the bacon, carrots, and other assorted items on the buffet. The server was kind and never considered rushing us, which was terrific. Pricing was reasonable, and kindness was in abundance.

Both our dinners were perfectly cooked! I had a steak sandwich so juicy and well seasoned I required no sauce. His burger was unique and excellent. The owners son who was serving offered to give us a tour after we got to talking about the place. Glad we took him up on it! What a cool building and they've done a nice job renovating the rooms, while leaving some historical feel and furniture. Will definitely return and we'd like to stay and maybe host a gathering in either the party or the banquet room. What a lovely surprise this place is!
