Ate there for the first time tonight. Very nice venue, staff was excellent and the food was very good. I had the green curry with chicken, and my wife had Soba noodles, as well as the butternut squash dumplings. All were nicely seasoned, and the green curry sauce was excellent. Reading some of these reviews literally baffles me. While the food is relatively decent, I continue to get bad service here every. single. time. And when you get bad service? You're gonna have a bad time. Bad Time #1: Came here for dinner with my mom. We ordered sushi as an appetizer, and two separate entrees. Sushi arrived with our entrees. Okay, not a big deal. The issue is that our server disappeared. Literally. I probably should've called the police in hindsight and reported a missing person. After my mom and I finished our dinner, we sat. And then sat. And sat some more. And sat some more. Twenty minutes went by, and we were the last customers in the restaurant. We had to FLAG DOWN a server who was not ours, and ask for our check. We even explained that our server hadn't come back to check in on us, and there was no apology that we were overlooked. Even then, we didn't see our original server for the rest of the night. Bad Time #2: My mom and I decided to come here and treat a family friend for her birthday. My mom and I received our meals, but our friend didn't. The server didn't even say anything, just dropped off our plates and left. So, we assumed that she was going back to the kitchen to get the third plate. My mom and I waited to eat our meals, because we wanted to be polite. After 5-10 minutes, nobody came back to our table, and our friend told us to go ahead and start. Our server came back some time later, and we informed her that we never received the third entree. Back to the kitchen she went. She came back a bit later, entree in tow, but offered no apology about the mistake, and the food wasn't taken off the check as a courtesy. Bad Time #3: I called to make a to go order. The girl on the phone sighed deeply and said, in the most blasé voice imaginable, "that'll be like... 15... or 20 minutes?" Upon my arrival, I was barely greeted by the hostess, Julia, who was less than pleasant (can only assume this was a ray of sunshine that I spoke to on the phone earlier). I received my order, paid, thought REALLY hard about writing a cryptic message to Julia on my receipt about how smiling can make a difference in customer service, but didn't, handed her the receipt, and left. She didn't even thank me. *Side note: there's a note at the hostess stand, in plain view for all to see, saying that "so and so receives $xx-xx off next order; bought sushi they didn't receive" or something along those lines. Um, maybe not the best place to advertise how bad your service is to the general public. But what do I know?* It is just such a shame that every time I come here, I leave feeling disappointed. Management should be fired. Servers should know the basics: smiling and being welcoming, offering an apology for mistakes, and just being aware of your surroundings does in fact go a long way. I still hold out hope, though, that some day Cafe Sado will get it's act together. A place like this is exactly what Chestertown needs. But until then, I'm not going back. read more

Used to like this place for its friendly ambiance (although its menu was quite uneven and sushi mediocre ... but hey, it's Chestertown). After tonight's debacle, though, I'm not going back. The experience was almost comically atrocious -- for both food and service. I went with friends and they ordered appetizers while I ordered lemongrass soup with seafood. Their appetizers came, my soup didn't ... and neither did the server, for 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 20 minutes ... finally I went and stood outside the kitchen door to find someone and remind them of my order. When at last the soup came, it smelled somehow wrong, and when I tried it, the scallop I bit into tasted like it had been left in a warm trashcan for a few days. I tried another and it was just as foul. Went back to the kitchen to find a server and tell her what had happened. She said, "Oh, I'll tell the owner." I went back to my table and waited another 10 minutes for someone to come and remove the increasingly nasty-smelling bowl of rotting scallop-infused broth from the table. Then, two minutes later, yet another server appeared bringing a "fresh" bowl of the same foul soup, and seemed surprised that I didn't want it! I told her they should really throw away the entire batch, and her only reply was "OK, thank you for telling me that." I asked for an appetizer instead, and that order also seemed to vanish into thin air, until I went back to the kitchen a third time and they grudgingly produced some calamari. I would've gotten up and walked out, except that it was an important dinner for my friends. Final insult ... Sado didn't take the soup off the bill. Nor did anyone ever come over to apologize. So now I'm back home, waiting for the symptoms of food poisoning. Thanks, Café Sado! read more

I've been a regular at this restaurant for several years -- mostly for sushi. The two for one is a great deal. Tonight we ordered several types of nigiri and maki sushi. The tuna was old and had a grayish coloration. The texture of the hamachi makes me suspect it was previously frozen. I could not eat the tuna or hamachi but my son, who doesn't like to make a fuss, ate it even though it was subpar. The ikura (salmon egg sushi) was also not as fresh as it should be. The salmon was good, but not outstanding as it usually is. I am concerned that they are lowering their standards. I really hate to give up on this restaurant but I am concerned that they would serve such low quality fish. read more

Cafè sado has good sushi at good prices, but their service is consistently poor. You will end up waiting too long for either a table, your food, or the check. I really enjoy the sushi, but do not go there because of the poor service. I sincerely hope this improves, so that I may enjoy Cafè Sado in the future. read more

Cafe Sado used to never disappoint--I'm not sure what happened but the last three times we have ordered take out at least one thing about our order was messed up. Forgotten roll, charged for a roll that they didn't have the ingredients for but didn't tell us or make something in place of it, no salsa on the the fiesta roll, charged for sauces but didn't receive them, given the completely wrong order.. hopefully they get it together soon. read more

We have been regular, satisfied customers for several years. The Asian-fusion menu was always interesting. Especially enjoyed experimenting with the 2 for 1 sushi specials. Starting last year things changed. Now the sushi chef(s) knows little or nothing about sushi preperation. The fish itself has a 'past its prime' look and taste. Other menu items were also poorly prepared (warmed-over, sat too long in the kitchen, etc.) This is a sad state of affairs for a place that was always a great experience in our small, historic town. The place is still busy in the dining room and take-out, but that says more about the clients than the quality of the food. Yes, the pandemic seems to have taken a toll on keeping good staff, but management should take heed. You need to take a serious look at what is coming out of the kitchen and sushi bar, or your most loyal customers will be forced to drift away. read more

Decent enough. Service was good so don't know what that other reviewer was talking about, in fact .. staff count was huge. Sushi was good but not great. A bit disappointed about the size of the sashimi pieces.. about 1/2 of what other restaurant sells. The Uni (Sea Urchin) could have been a bit fresher and was a little bitter. very nice décor and special occasion restaurant possibilities. Other items like Steak and Tempura on the menu for those who don't want exotic Asian specialties. Good size Saki served for $6. Very welcome diversity to a generally boring dining scene in Chestertown. read more

My wife and I went there 17 Jul 2015. I've heard that the place has bad service, but good food. Our food came pretty fast. Server was very attentive, and it was a great evening. Sado's WAS my favorite restaurant in Chestertown the food and ambiance are wonderful. HOWEVER I was there this past Friday (3/23) with my daughter and several cockroaches ran across our plates! I was completely disgusted and screamed. The host said they always have cockroaches and it was no big deal. He couldn't believe I was grossed out and still expected me to pay for the meal! just stay away they need to know that this is not appropriate conduct. If people continue to patronize this restaurant they will never correct the problem - so sad. read more

Not what I was expecting, service was great. Our server was very attentive. Orders were placed and the food came quickly. Drinking glasses seemed to never empty. Value for the money? And then some. While visiting family in Chestertown, we decided to have dinner at Café Sado on Sunday, December 6, 2015. There were 5 in our party and everyone commented on the food as being very good to excellent. The service was also very good and attentive. I paid the bill and everyone agreed that it was a wonderful evening. I realized the next day there had been a 15% gratuity added to the bill which I failed to notice and I had included a nice gratuity on top of that. It is a rare occurrence in this country for a gratuity be added to the bill unless there are unusual circumstances. We were a party of 5 seated in a booth very comfortably. If an establishment has a policy to include a gratuity, it should be mention when taking the orders as a courtesy to the patrons. read more

Have eaten at this new location twice now -- for dinner and then just today for lunch. Although I was quite excited by the relatively nice decor and overall ambience in my first experience there for dinner, I realized how disappointed I was after my lunch experience today, both with the food, pricing and service. First, the food: on the one hand, the vegetarian sushi dishes (avocado and cucumber rolls) were OK -- at least, it met my expectations for a Japanese restaurant. Indeed, they were quite good considering that no Japanese or even Asian-looking people appear to work there. (This is Chestertown, after all.) However, the Vegetarian Noodle dish, which is described in their menu as "Fried tofu stir fried with egg noodles beans sprout egg" for $6 at lunch, literally looked like something that came out of a Chef Boyardee "Spaghettios" can with some goopy, tomato-based sauce smothering a handful of noodles and some fried tofu. Even worse was the taste: salt, salt and more salt! Not exactly the healthy vegetarian dish I was hoping for, based on the description. I felt so thirsty and crappy after eating it. But the final insult was the bill: the waiter charged me an extra $2 for the fried tofu, which is the main part of the dish!!! Total cost for the salty Spahettios: $8. Second, this place engages in classic nickel and dime-ing. One might assume that a small pot of hot tea served in an Asian restaurant would be on the house, but I was charged $3 for my tea at lunch. Yet nowhere is the price of tea disclosed on the menu. Same with the cup of seltzer water my son ordered -- I wasn't expecting to pay $2 for it, but at least it was cheaper than the little pot of tea. I guess they figure if you don't ask, then tough. Third, their service simply isn't up to par. Had to wait a long time just to be seated at lunch and then we noticed that the waiter was in such a hurry to close down as lunch time was ending that he never bothered with the usual niceties, like "how was everything?" Too bad, because I would have told him about the salty Spaghettios. My advice: stick with the vegetarian sushi and don't order anything else. Don't even ask for tea unless you don't mind paying $3 for a tea bag and a little pot of hot water. And WAC students or anyone on a budget (who isn't?) -- be ready for sticker shock when you get the bill. The "buy one get one free" sushi roll deal turns out to be a tease; they make up the profit with the nickel and dime-ing. read more

AMAZING! Food was so delicious, even better than expected. We got a number of different sushi rolls, which were all scrumptious and beautifully presented. We also got the mango chicken, which was beautiful. The bacon wrapped scallops for a starter are a MUST! Will definitely come back if in the area. Our entire family has frequented this restaurant since it's opening but last night was the end of our visits! Prior to this location opening, we have visited their original location on Kent Island. The Chestertown location is closer to us....so we were thrilled! Since opening, the service has always been a HUGE issue. The food has always been wonderful, hence, we continued to support them in hopes the service issues would be worked out. Last night, two of us went in at 7:15pm with no reservation and knew that we may have to wait. When we entered, there were several people waiting with no hostess in sight. After about 5 minutes, the hostess (Julia) arrived with no greeting and told my husband it would be at least 35 minutes for a table. When he asked that she put us on the list, her reply was that she wouldn't "call us" we had to wait...when he indicated that we were going to stay there and wait for a table, she scowled and took our name. Just then I noticed that there were two openings at the "Sushi bar" area and we asked if we could just sit there as a table wasn't mandatory. Her reply was that there was a woman with 'her stuff' taking up one of the chairs. I indicated that I would ask her to move her items and she turned around and walked away. We approached the bar and the other customer gladly removed her backpack and welcomed us to take the seats. We sat for approximately 2 minutes when the lovely "Julia" came over and aggressively indicated that she did not tell us that we were allowed to sit there and there were other people waiting for tables! Typically in a restaurant, don't people sit at the bar if there are seats available and a wait for tables????? I followed her back to the hostess stand after her LOUD announcement to us regarding our seating...told her that my husband specifically asked her if we could sit at the bar and she turned around and walked away. She was very rude and unprofessional in our 20 seconds exchange so I asked for her name with the intent to call the owner in the morning. She refused to give me her name and said "Lady....get out of my way!" Not once but twice!!! Lovely customer service provided by the lovely Julia! I continue to repeat her name in this post as I asked 2 bus people her name and they wouldn't tell me but finally a server came out of the kitchen and did tell me. I have never done a review on any of these service sites and have worked part time in the restaurant industry for the last 5 years....this girl was so rude and unprofessional that the wonderful owner needs to know the 'face that is greeting the customer'. She doesn't care how it reflects on the business....just there for a paycheck obviously. We will continue to visit Cafe Sado but it will be the Kent Island location with the same wonderful food AND excellent customer service! read more

We frequent cafe sado often and as far as sushi goes, this place is one of the best. Their sushi is to die for, however when it comes to their other menu items, they leave me wanting more. A bowl of ramen noodles with shrimp for $11, not really much to it, certainly not mind blowing. Ordered the Kobe burger today which also comes with 'Sado fries' which seemed like fries with old bay or some form of seasoning. The fries were delicious; I ordered the burger medium rare, however it came out more towards medium/medium well. The burger was OK, it was relatively juicy; it was just missing something, again, not super delicious or mind blowing. For their sushi being so delicious, I guess I just expect more from their other menu items. I have a few more items I want to try out and maybe they can redeem themselves. Four stars because the sushi is so good... all in all, if you are looking for some delicious sushi, put this place on the top of your list. read more

I ordered food from there this evening at 1850 and was told it would take about 10 to 15 minutes. I arrived there at 1915 to pick up my order. I was told that they had no order from me, was I sure I was at the correct location as they have two locations. After verifying the correct number, they said they would make it right and get my order in 10 minutes. So I have them my order again figuring it would be done no later than 1927. Well was I wrong the order finally came out at 1937. Almost 50 minutes after the original order. Then they made me pay the full price for the order without a sorry. At this point I asked to see the manager who said his name was Tony and he said he was not sure how the order got missed but he would make it right the next time I came in. What makes him so confident that will happen? Very unpleased with this visit. The customer service was really bad this time around. I'd say try other locations in Middletown if you have the time to travel. read more

Visited for dinner during a weekday evening based on good reviews. I had expected this to be a Japanese, pan-Asian restaurant. It was primarily Thai, with some Indonesian, and only sushi and ramen as Japanese. Must have changed ownership. The sake list contained 4 entries, none of which were identified by type, district, or quality (just "hot" or "cold"). No "gen-mai" or even brand names. Based on the server's advice, we got the "silver" sake, which was supposed to be dry (and cold). Usually, better sake is served cold. This was not good sake. A companion ordered the "hot" sake, and it was practically boiling. The shrimp tempura appetizer got its crunch from breading. The veggie tempura was much better. The sushi rice was awful: way over-cooked, poorly seasoned, and inartfully made. The sushi cooks used an imported Japanese machine that pressed a layer of rice on a seaweed wrapper. Presumably because the cooks couldn't do it manually. The fish itself was decent: fresh, but not artfully sliced. The chicken and beef satay (Indonesian) were better, and the satay sauces were ok. The service was consistently poor. Bottom line: drive right on by. read more
