In Old Saybrook on Main Street I stopped by Cafe Toscana for some coffee with my two friends. This is a tiny little coffee shop that also makes some breakfast options. It looks cute from the outside, but looks like it could use a little refreshment both inside and outside. The outside screen door is hanging by a thread. The man working inside appeared to be the owner. And he was the only one I saw working. There was a woman in front of me, who was waiting for her order. Then it was my turn, I walked up to the counter to place my order, and he immediately said "do you know what you want? I'll take him instead." Referring to a customer sitting down. I just walked over, I wasn't hanging out. I'd say that's a bit uninviting and off putting. I quickly ordered a French Vanilla ice coffee, a hot coffee and an ice tea. There is an area where you can add what you need to your coffee. At the counter there is a sign that says to step away after you make your order. We got our coffees and sat outside. These were actually 20 ounce coffees for $10.00 altogether, so it was a real bargain. My coffee was perfect, flavorful, fresh and delicious! He truly makes excellent coffee here. I didn't like how off putting he was. Starbucks is just a few doors away. I'd much rather support a small business like this one then a chain like Starbucks. Coffee is excellent, I can't speak for the breakfast, there's plenty of room for improvement for the establishment and the vibe inside. read more

This place has gone downhill. Used to be cute and quaint... now it's filthy. There's a plastic container on the counter holding baked goods that's visibly dirty, and the AC unit is caked with dust. I noticed all of this while I waited for my food and wanted to cancel my order. How clean can the kitchen be? Sorry, the place needs an overhaul. read more

Cute. Adorable little Cafe situated by itself on tree lined Old Saybrook Main Street. It could use a little facelift inside. Maybe some cuter cafe furniture & some memorabilia? The gentleman there could not be more friendly, courteous, accommodating & efficient. I had a latte which was prepared perfectly as ordered. So was my Bagel sandwich which was delicious. We had omelettes with cheddar cheese and fresh veggies, yum! Great coffee. The place is tiny. There are only a couple of tables indoors along with the open cooking area. The indoor seating area is functional but lacks charm. The outdoor space is perfect for groups of four or fewer. If you have a large group, order take out. Prices are low, food is fresh. This is a super tiny and cute place. I ran in for a quick coffee. I ordered an iced mochaccino. It was priced perfect and so refreshing. There was plenty of parking right up front and another guest was ordering a sandwich to go. The coffee selection was limited to about 6 beverages that you could have hot or iced. read more

This place has delicious fresh sandwiches, very small inside but the quality is within. I had the chicken mozzarella melt and it was good, but missing something, with just chicken, mozzarella, and pesto this sandwich needed something more to add a bit more character. Their condiment bar looked like it was raided by a swarm people -- which I doubt considering how small the place was. It should have been cleaned better. I wanted to support a local business so I decided to go to Cafe Toscana to get two basic iced teas because of the positive reviews on Yelp However, my experience was less than satisfactory. There's nothing on the website indicating you should call to order. When I arrived I saw a sign on the door saying to go orders only and I called in my order. No big deal- I actually prefer this. However, the person on the other end of the phone seemed very confused by my order of two iced teas sweetened with sugar. I waited outside for them to be made and when it was done he came out and said ok done. It was unclear if I should go in or if he was bringing them out to me. So I opened the door and asked and he told me to come in. I went inside Cafe Toscana and immediately noticed the only man working there did not have his face mask covering his nose (which makes it pointless). I didn't try my iced tea till I drove home and I have to say these are the worst tasting drinks I have ever had. EVER. There goes $7 down the drain bc I won't be drinking them. They taste nothing like iced tea. They taste like water with a bad after taste and smell like fake raspberry. I didn't know you could mess up a basic drink so badly... Perhaps under normal circumstances Cafe Toscana is good as the other reviews suggest. However, I would not recommend them during this time period. I can't understand the poor or so-so reviews of this place. My husband and I love this place. We drive 20 minutes each way to get their bagels on weekends. They are so good, apparently they get them fresh from NY every morning. We mostly go for breakfast, which has always been excellent. The owner is a nice, hardworking guy who clearly puts a lot of care into the food, and we like to support a local small business. We recently discovered their soups for lunch, which are all homemade--so far we've tried four varieties and loved them all. This is our only breakfast spot in Old Saybrook since Paperback Cafe is not so great any more after its owners changed. read more
