Our server actually quipped with us about how the kitchen would love us for making it a simple order but we ended up waiting over an hour for our food. Not too sweet, just enough of a tang and bite with the mustard to make it so different. The Tea Kettle is a local favorite amongst those on the shoreline. I heard a lot hype about their over-the-top pancakes menu; pancake stacks could be classified as desserts and boozy breakfast concoctions. While being in the area bright and early on a Saturday, we wondered in for breakfast. We arrived 30 minutes after opening and the atmosphere was pleasantly low-key--though I can see it getting busy during peak times. We were greeted and seated right away. The dining room was a decent size with a bar up front with a view into the kitchen. It was like a cross between a diner and grandma's house. There was a collection of unique ceramic tea kettles that were dispersed around the restaurant with other tea-center decor. The menu was extensive. From the crazy pancakes presented on a wall to eggs benedicts and omelets, southern specialties, smoothies, milkshakes, mimosas and cocktails, oh, and they are open for lunch too! They offer a variety of paleo, keto, and gluten free options which was pleasant to see. They serve tea from Savvy Tea of Madison. My husband ordered one of their daily specials: Loaded Breakfast Quesadilla. It was a large quesadilla filled with scrambled eggs, green peppers, onions, bacon, home fries & cheddar cheese. It came with sour cream and salsa. The quesadilla was loaded and very filling that he boxed up half of it for home. I decided on the Vanilla Vodka Blueberry Cream French Toast. This was an unusual order for me as I particular don't like french toast nor do I like sweet options for breakfast--but this is what the Tea Kettle is known for, so why not? Well, let me tell you... This was the BEST french toast I had ever had and I don't want french toast from anywhere else moving forward. The toast was spongy, had delicious caramelized grilled edges, tasty cinnamon and spices and then topped with a non-overly sweet, fresh blueberry vanilla vodka cream sauce, dollops of fresh whipped cream, powdered sugar, and a delicious maple butter. The toppings themselves were enough and no need for extra syrup. I am dreaming about the french toast as I write this, so yummy! Our server was friendly and business started to pick up once we finished our meals. I can see The Tea Kettle getting very busy, especially during the spring and summer season. The home fries were so plain it was like eating boiled potatoes. The pancakes were just ok. English muffin burnt and no jelly offered. At least there was real maple syrup. I guess the scrambled eggs were the best thing. The bathroom needs updating and cleaning. Our particular waiter was great. He was new. The other waitstaff was pretty rough and unwelcoming and shouting orders across the place like "DON'T seat them until you check the list first!" Incredible, gigantic pancakes that are light and fluffy! The Tea Kettle has a cozy, diner-like feel in a shopping plaza but still has a good amount of seating. Haven't been back since before covid and the food is phenomenal. The head waitress was super stressed and it definitely showed. Almost all tables were full and it wasn't till about 9ish that more employees arrived to assist. The blender was broken and she let customers know. She advised that it would be a 15 minute wait since there were no tables available. (There were 2 free tables in the corner that we could've been seated at.) As we waited another party of 4 came in that they were going to seat ahead of us after telling us food will be another 35 to 40 minutes. I had to advise the new hostess that we had been waiting and there were tables available in the back to seat us at. She sat us reluctantly at one of the tables. We waited till someone came over to take our drinks. The head waitress came over and asked if we wanted coffee. One person said yes so she brought over a pit and some creamer. A different waitress brought us a pitcher of water. Unfortunately our waitress took another table's order that sat after we had. The wait for the food itself was pretty accurate. I'll definitely not be coming again on a weekend. Less busy during the week and reservations aren't taken. The food is delicious and I'd recommend based off that. This chef driven restaurant specializes in breakfast and and also serves lunch. I didn't realize how special it was until I started reading the menu. Lots of organic and homemade items right down to the mayonnaise. We ordered lunch this time. I had a cup of cream rich Connecticut Clam Chowder. The soup was very creamy and featured corn, potatoes and clams. I would have liked a bit more clam flavor but it was still sweet and delicious with none of the usual cornstarch thickener. The Mayo really shined in my tuna sandwich. My husband loved his Kettle chicken sandwich. It featured a large hand breaded chicken breast covered in an addictive glaze. With homemade kettle chips it was worth every calorie. Two others got the home cured bacon and cheese covered Randy Rhodes burger. Massive in size it looked amazing and was definitely hand formed. Both sweet potato and regular French fries were hand cut and again great. The service was super friendly. It took a while to get our food because the place was packed and everything is cooked to order. I was so bummed that we were leaving that day! I would love to try all of their amazing breakfast specials. I thought about ordering some food to go but with a 21/2 hour drive ahead I thought better of it. Now I want to go back to Old Saybrook Just to eat here again! The kicker? The prices were comparable with all of the area prices. My daughter lives near here. When we were planning our visit from PA, she told us that The Tea Kettle is a must for its huge pancakes! It has an end spot in a row of stores, the first is an adventure store, second vape, and then you'll find the tea . The place is not a crusty diner (which can be charming if food and service are good enough); it has new flooring. The tables and chairs are neat and clean. If you're looking for a unique dining experience, check out the Tea Kettle Restaurant. They offer Paleo, Organic and Gluten-free options. If you're looking for a Southern take on breakfast, you've found the place. With about 10 Southern dishes it was hard for me to chose. I went with my first choice, the Shrimp and Grits. Any of you the follow my reviews know that I had dubbed Highball & Harvest the best. When in Florida you should definitely go there. When you're in Connecticut, definitely go to The Tea Kettle Restaurant. I have never had a better dish of shrimp and grits than I had at this restaurant. The menu looked incredible and had all the types of food that we like from Breakfast to the lunch menu. They do close at 2:00pm, so get there early. Tons of GF options, so I had the GF Cali wrap w/ grilled chicken, avocado, and apple smoked bacon. $2 extra for the GF wrap and $2 extra for the waffle fries. The wrap was good, and the waffle fries were better...best I ever had better. The ketchup on the table to compliment the fries is organic. Can't tell you how much I hate seeing ketchup in other restaurants with high fructose corn syrup. The in house made side of slaw and pickles were also very good. Wife had the candied walnut pancake (singular)...but the pancake was bigger than a small to medium size pizza...I kid you not. She said it was very good, just a bit on the sweet side. Coffee was good. This restaurant also has Savy tea. Savy has the best tea. If you've never been there in Madison, Ct. and like tea, Savy is the place to go. The place was very busy on a Monday at 1:00pm. The atmosphere is very comfortable, waitress was sweet and accommodating as well. I was surprised to see that they have a full bar w/ wine, beer, and mixed drinks. They'll even put a little somthin somthin in your milk shake. First time visiting this establishment while traveling. We arrived on a Monday at prime lunchtime and got a bit nervous the place was empty. However, know Mondays are slow and low key days of the week-and definitely outside of tourist season. And just as we were finishing up, a party of 4 arrived and mentioned that outside of a slow Monday, you are lucky to get a seat. Lovely place, plenty of tables in a well lit space. Interesting and cute teapots decorating the space. We ordered a bowl of tomato soup with full grilled cheese and waffle fries,coleslaw. Would substitute another cheese for mozz next time; but otherwise so good! Waffle fries were addictingly good, airy, crunchy and well seasoned. Benny with hash was really great. Generally, I love this restaurant for breakfast. The staff are very friendly and competent. My only issue with service is the same issue I have at any table service restaurant: waiters should never start clearing a table for any guests while at least one of them is still enjoying their meal, and NEVER bring the check while someone is still eating! The only allowable exception is if the guests specifically request you do otherwise or if people are seated at the bar. It make us very uncomfortable when you are rushing us out the door, especially considering the cost of eating out these days. That said, the menu, presentation and atmosphere are all wonderful, and I highly recommend this place! read more

I don't know a lot, but I know this was the BEST PANCAKE I remember ever having. I didn't know it was hidden in Old Saybrook. The hot chocolate made me feel like I was kid again. For a Northeastern spot, their grits were very good. The corn beef hash was just salty enough where I could mix it with the grits to make a great meal even greater. Come to Old Saybrook for Katherine Hepburn history and stay for The Tea Kettle's breakfast. Or go here before/after you outlet shop, I promise it will be the highlight of your time there.
