The store is a treasure trove of cheeses, food items and gifts for your foodie friends and family. I have been meaning to stop in for some time now and today was the day. I found the imported and homeland cheese selection to be quite extensive. All of my favorites plus plus plus. Carson served me as I chose a few different cheese, bread and meat items with tastes along the way. I also met Christine who is the shop owner and had a great exchange with her. The store was well stocked with specialty foods, gift items and lots of holiday paper napkins. I went in for cheese knives and found a nice selection to choose from. I just love this specialty store! The extensive choice of quality coffees is just amazing. I have tried several different varieties of caffeinated and decaffeinated coffees, some organic and some not organic and found them all quite smooth, even bodied and delicious. I have also tried their breads, homemade cookies and chocolates and have been extremely happy with the quality, freshness and taste. The whole store is stocked full with edible and gift goodies. This place is a real find and worth the trip. I try to make a stop about once a month when I am visiting the area. read more

Fromage Fine Foods ("3F") is a specialty food store with an emphasis on cheese. This was my first visit. 3F is a welcome reminder of how awesome independent cheese shops used to dot the CT landscape before larger stores with similar quality cheese shops like Whole Foods came to an area. Service was very friendly and a definite selling point. I skipped right to the cheese area. I quickly found 3 of my fav cheeses you don't see in most grocery stores: Red Dragon (which has a flavor reminiscent of a mild Dijon), Cotswold (a chivey/herby yellow semi-hard Colby-ish cheese) and Mango Ginger Stilton. The cheeses were all great. Since I only wanted 3 cheeses, I didn't spend much time looking at other cheese labels. However, there seemed to be a wide selection of quality cheeses (Drunken Goat, Manchengo, Triple Cream, etc.) that would satisfy most cheese fans. Other than the cheese, I most paid attention to breads, olives and charcuterie. The options were decent, but not as solid as I've seen in some similar places. I didn't buy charcuterie. I did buy a French Olive Combo and two baguettes. They were pretty good. For this type of store, the inside was huge and jam-packed with stuff. If there had been fewer goods that had the appearance of being more specially curated and more open spaces in the store, I probably would have paid more attention to the other goods. If you live anywhere near the area, I suspect 3F may be the best shop for cheese. That alone makes it worth a visit. And a person with more time and motivation than I had, would likely find some gems in the large shop. Four Stars read more

Every visit is an experience and I never leave empty handed. I love Fromage but my wallet is happy that it isn't that close to me. The staff is so knowledgeable and even though I'm not there often they remember me. The cheese selection is incomparable! No grocery store could compare. The specialty foods, teas and giftable items are a bonus. Visiting Fromage is like going to a little shop in France or some other European country. This place has been key the past few months! So many parties and so much charcuterie! Fromage makes it super easy to get what you need. They have a huge board with an insane listing of cheeses to choose from that come from all over the world. I will admit, the board is quite overwhelming to look at. However, the cheesemongers are happy to help you navigate. They can make recommendations based on flavor, texture, pairing, number of guests (for quantity), and more. Their knowledge alone is worth the trip. In addition to cheese, they also have cured meats in the case such as prosciutto and a few different pates and olives to pair with your treats. A variety of crackers, fruit spreads, chocolates, and other goodies are around on the shelves to add that extra bit to your platter. I never have any trouble picking items out to please everyone. After seeing the other reviews regarding the expiration dates, I do check items the items. I have not had a problem so far though. There is indeed a lot of stuff in that space, but I find that to be fun to walk about and look around. read more

The second we opened the door and walked in, we were blown away by what we saw! Gourmet foods everywhere. Meats, cheeses, spices, coffees, oils, breads, and jars and cans of so many cool things to make you weep with joy. And then there are the cheeses. Hundreds of cheeses from all over the world. Hard cheeses, soft cheeses, crumbly cheese, cheese spreads. They have a gigantic chalkboard listing their prodigious inventory of cheeses by their home country of origin. I bought a Valdeen Blue Cheese from Spain that was great. Such intense flavor- so a little goes a long way. We also bought two spreads from the dozen or so available. The staff was super nice, and offers lots of suggestions and samples if you can't make up your mind. Readers of the Shoreline Times have voted Fromage as the "Best Cheese Shop" for nine years in a row. When you walk into the store, you'll know why immediately. read more

I love this place; the owner Christine is a wonder, very knowledgable, super helpful, and her cheese/charcuterie platters are works of art. I've never gone wrong following the suggestions she makes for putting together a perfect selection, whether it's for five or fifty. The breads, cheeses, meats, pates, olives, etc. are all absolutely first quality, and the selection is massive. There is a huge selection of top quality giftware, and a ton of great quick bites/ appetizers in the freezer section. The fresh breads are baked locally and delicious too. Overly merchandized , RANSACKED and confusing tables, cabinets and shelves filled with ceramics, plates, wooden bowls, linens , jellies, sauces, cookies, crackers, dry sausage and more greet you as you enter the store; all of what you see is two to three times the cost for the same gourmet food and acccesories found in Home Goods and Marshalls. Look carefully, as you may find expired dates on merchandise! Now, I must reserve the last point to mention the cheese. First of all, I've travelled the world and have never seen the presumptuousness of a cheese shop not listing cheese prices per pound. Beyond this, their cheese is over-ripe and purchased as discounted cheese , but sold as premium cheese. You can find much better than their expensive over-ripened cheese elsewhere! read more

I have been going here since I moved to CT in 2006, but yesterday my husband and I stopped by to get some gourmet goodies for a cozy Saturday night at home (with just enough for a few leftovers). We purchased some of the Greek olive assortment, some lovely aged Gouda, some triple creme, some foie gras, some venison pate, some sopressata, some cornichons and some crackers - as they were out of bread we stopped and got a baguette on the way home. I heard about this place from my mother, who works in Old Saybrook and has bought the WOW factored-packed mango cheese for special occasions. When I told a nice female employee about my favorite cheese, she was so nice to offer me a little sample. Since I was in a mood for a coffee, I ordered an iced coffee. For less than two dollars (I think),my drink had a nice bold, coffee presence and didn't need a lot of sugar or cream. If I lived in OLS, this would be my go-to place to get coffee on the go! I first came across Fromage at a party when I had the most beautifully arranged, delicious and creative cheese plate I'd ever seen. I asked the host where they'd gotten it and they explained that even though it was a bit of a drive for them they went to Fromage. For my holiday party, I decided to try Fromage. I was a little worried because I put my order in a little later than I should have, but when I called, they put me completely at ease, saying it was no problem at all. I picked up the cheese plate today and am just blown away by the quality. It also was no where near as expensive as I thought something of this quality would be. It's just beautiful and I'm so pleased. I didn't spend much time in the store itself but it looked fantastic. All jars,bottles etc i saw were turned so u can not read the Prices. Prices are quite high for almost everything. Cheeses are not clearly marked for prices either. No pricing info. Until you ask for the cheese. All behind the counter. If you don't care about costs or prices, or don't watch your costs, then this shop is ideal for you. Very Expensive. Lots of stuff up in the shelves also at high prices . Very large store, lots of space. But not a lot of cheese actually for a place called "from age" ... Sad. If you don't mind being embarrassed when u get to the register about the quite high prices of the cheeses and other goods. I was introduced to Fromage by a fellow foodie who also happened to be my boss. I went thinking it would be a tiny little cheese shop but it turned out to be a destination. I try to get to Fromage 4-5 times a year. First the Cheese: If you have heard of it, tasted it or read about it, they have it. The staff is very knowledgeable about everything cheese and has made some awesome recommendations. You can try a cheese before you buy it to make sure you will enjoy it. I have a slight addiction to Truffle Cheese and Fromage has several that are just amazing. However, before you get to the cheese you have to go through the shop. Anything you can think of foodwise you will find here. Need something special for those cupcakes? They have them. Looking for a jam for that brunch? Yep, they have that too. I once spent an hour going through mustards trying to decide on the perfect one for the St. Patrick's Day corned beef. I have bought things I never knew I needed: Black Truffle Balsamic? Oh yeah, it's as pefect as it sounds. They also sell some ready make things to get your dinner parties off to a great start.
