I love the chicken skewers and of course the signature Yumm sauce. I don't care how "full of fat" everyone says it is. Full of fat = yummy. Just dip a little chicken in and don't eat it all. The rice bowls are quaint and filling. The up top seating is nice and out of the way. The order at the counter is easy and quick. Stop by for unique flavor and fast service. If you asked me after the first time I went here, I would have given it five stars. However, the more I eat here, the more I dislike it. The Yumm sauce is SO GOOD, but, as other reviewers have mentioned, that is because it is full of fat. In other words, not healthy. In addition, the price is WAY too high. 90% of your bowl is rice, the rest of the toppings are minimal at best. A 50-50 ratio would make me a little happier, but not much. Also, $2 for chicken... no thank you! The two times I have choked down the cost, they have only given me what amounted to 2 ounces of chicken, not even a serving size. I have tried probably 5 of their different bowls. All have unique, distinct flavors but the original problems still exist. I usually don't do reviews but I had to make an account for this. I think this was one of the worst meals of my life. I ordered a chicken bento from here, and it was absolutely NASTY. The chicken had a weird taste and was so rubbery, the coleslaw tasted curdled, the orange sauce (I think that might've been the infamous Yumm sauce) that came with it was pretty disgusting, and the teriyaki sauce was overwhelmingly sweet. I was really upset because this is one of the nearest slightly healthier options around here but it really didn't deliver. Yikes...and it costed over 20$! read more

During my four years at Oregon State I was blessed to be within walking distance on many occasions, and of all the times that I've been there I have never had a bad experience. I'm not a huge fan of the Yumm sauce, so I usually order my food without it, and it's still delicious. You don't have to love their sauce to love their food. This is still my favorite Cafe Yumm that I've been to (and I'm a bit of an addict for their Hot and Jazzy bowls!) The service, care and speed is unequaled :) For those who haven't experienced the perfect composition of the Hot and Jazzy.. Do! There is rice, beans, cheese, tomato, avocado, a spicy green sauce, and a special creamy sauce! Sooo good :) it is def spicy, so if you're not used to it, get the spicy sauce on the side or light the first time. Then mix it up (like most of their bowls). Unfortunately, after having gone to this location on THREE different occasions during regular business hours in a six month period and finding it closed, I will not be returning. Almost choked on a piece of rubber after the first bite. I coughed up the rubber after it was half way down my throat. I called the manager who asked me to come back and show him. After showing him the piece of rubber he said he had no idea how it got in my food and said there's nothing like that in their kitchen. I have been a big fan of Cafe Yumm since it opened. I found myself completely addicted to the Yumm bowls (hot & jazzy!). However, the past several months the quality and consistency of the food has declined big time! Not sure what's going on there?? Actually maybe the quality is still good. You just can't tell due to the poor quality control & inconsistency. My coworkers have also complained and we rarely go any more unless we are feeling highly adventurous (a little lunch time roulette). The major issues: rice and/or beans not cooked thoroughly, not enough Yumm sauce or drowning in it, the amount of rice is inconsistent from day to day, and worst of all, as happened today, the beans were cooked (yeah!) but not drained. They were just slopped into the dish in all of their cooking water. It was like a bowl of bean juice with everything just floating in it. So nasty. Took one bite and tossed $6 down the drain. The owner/manager and workers are always so nice and I can tell they are working hard, especially at the busy lunch hour so I hate to leave a bad review - and when it is good, it's good - but the point is Cafe Yumm is like a box of chocolates. When I went to open my Yumm baby, I was super disappointed, Secondly, please work on portion sizes. My bowl was 75% rice. It is the worst bowl I have ever had. For the most part this is a healthy vegan/vegetarian option. The portions are on the small side so they are great for lunch if you want to ensure you don't get too full. They offer rice bowls, wraps, soups, and even a few entrees. The traditional Yumm sauce, while probably the least healthy item on their menu, is delicious. They now have chicken skewers to go with the teriyaki glazed tofu option. The seating is rather limited even thought there is also an upstairs seating area so if you hit lunch rush hour you might have to wait a short moment to sit down. The food is tastey. The yum sauce is definately different but it grew on me. I work on campus so it is a convenient place for lunch. My biggest complaint is that the portions are very small! The first time I went there I got a small bowl to go. The to-go container was packed full of the food. Being a beans and rice dish it was pretty filling. The next time I went I was pretty hungry so I order the medium sized bowl. The to-go bowl was about 2/3 full and it didn't seem like i got much more food than in the small bowl. I thought maybe it was just a mistake so I went there a third time and ordered a medium and the same thing happened. I have to say that I was left hungry after eating it. For the price you definately do not get a lot of food. If your really hungry you might want to try another place or plan on spending a lot here. I love cafe yumm and want to give it more stars but the cost is a little high for some of the bowls that have pretty straightforward ingredients. That being said, the price does not keep us from coming back. This is a fast casual place where I know I can always find several vegetarian options, which can't be said about a lot of fast places to eat in town. Will definitely miss it when we leave.
