This is some of the best food I've had in Puerto Rico, and it's also some of the cheapest. It's a roadside stand inside an old yellow school bus. Yes, you read that right. They converted a BUS into the most kick-ass food stand you've ever seen.
You will need a car to get here, but it's totally awesome. It's located in an Industrial Park area, a few minutes drive from the Plaza Las Americas. The Yelp map is approximate but is very close to the real location, it definitely is the right street. The "cafe" is on Ave B off Matadero, just before F. Baragano Inc. I'd recommend arriving between 11 and 11:30, it gets crowded quickly after that.
The customers are all local blue collar workers stopping in for a quick bite to eat. The old couple who run the place don't speak much English. It's a very authentic experience. The eating area is a table outside under a tent, or you can stand at the counter.
For about $7 you get a huge styrofoam takeout container full of food and a drink. The menu changes daily, usually there's about 3 main dishes to pick from, all real classic Puerto Rican fare like pan fried chicken, chicken breast with onion, or carne frita. I recommend the carne frita if they have it. I also recommend the rice and beans (Arroz con habichuela) and tostones. There's tasty homemade pique (hot sauce). The food is unbelievably good. Better than at touristy places that charge way more.
This place can't be beat. For less than a fast food meal, you get real homecooked food and the portions are enormous. A coworker took me here and everyone was a little surprised and amused to see a gringo here but they were friendly and once they realized I spoke a little Spanish we were joking and talking through the meal. The experience is great. If you're at the Plaza Las Americas, I'd drive out here any day of the week rather than eat at the food court. read more
