When we arrive the waiter says the kitchen doesn't open for 30 minutes but we can sit at a table and have a drink. We have a bottle of water for the table and a glass of rosé. A couple sitting next to us ( obviously tourists as well ) were told the same thing. A group of people walk up, obviously locals and start chatting with the waiter, he seats them and immediately brings out wine and bread to them. Within 10 minutes he brings out armfuls of various pasta dishes to them. Meanwhile we wait another 15 min before he even acknowledged us again after serving food to yet another group of 6 locals that just arrived. We finally get to order, the food is fine, then sat with empty glasses and plates on our table for 15 min again without acknowledgement, we have to get his attention to ask for the check, he brings 10 min later, I immediately put my card in the holder and sit it to the edge of the table so he can obviously see it's ready. He NEVER comes back, so we think " oh maybe we need to pay inside ". We go inside, I am waiting behind a local at the register ( but I am leaving room for people to pass thru because it is a small space ) and when the person I a waiting behind leaves two local step right in front of me and the lady at the register says nothing. After they pay I step up to pay, I say hello, she is silent, she runs the card put the receipt down and walks away. In short, worst dining experience I've had in Venice, they obviously hate tourists and are not shy about it.

Most cicchetti are priced between €1-€3, which is consumed with alcohol priced from €2-€4. You can eat your cicchetti at one bacaro or make a crawl by traveling to several. As suggested by Rick Steves, one of his tour guides Alessandro Schezzini specializes in a cicchetti crawl. This was the first stop in his crawl as well as my first real meal in Venice (I had arrived from the US that morning). Turns out that there's two parts to this bacaro: the bar area where people drink and a back area where people can eat cicchetti or full meals. Since we were a big group we first started at the back tables where we were introduced to four cicchetti. - Calamari: fresh off the fryer, you can taste the freshness of the squid. Squid was not rubbery at all. - Sardine on top of an egg. My favorite cicchetti. Alessandro encouraged people to try to eat out of their comfort zone. - Rosemary potatoes: for any vegetarians of the group. - Deep fried fritter with meat (arancini?) All was served with flowing pitchers of house red wine, which Alessandro kept track of and poured as our glasses were approaching empty. It was also quite easy to get full out of fried food and wine. This bacaro is hidden somewhere near the Rialto so use Google Maps to find it.

A creepy guy in a van followed me and started catcalling me; so I ran back to the restaurant and tried to get an Uber since I was by myself. There were no Uber's in the area so I asked the owners of the restaurant to call me a cab. The male owner did not speak English, but his wife did. They insisted on driving me back to my hotel! They felt sorry for me and were so nice. I am very grateful for their hospitality....they went way beyond the call of duty!
