    Affogato (€6) with complimentary water

My husband and I came to Trastevere, Rome for our honeymoon. We had been searching for good breakfast and lunch spots that were light enough, but enough fuel for the day. It's safe to say that we have eaten at Caffe Trastevere more than anywhere else. The staff started to recognize us as we ordered cappuccinos (less than €2), cornetti (croissant, like €2) affogato (gelato and espresso for €6) paninis (€4) , gelato (€2-6 depending on size you get), and an italian donut. We got 2 cappuccinos, a mozzarella and prosciutto panini, and a donut for €11! The cappuccinos are frothy, cornetti was flaky, and the paninis hit the spot. Staff remembered us and knew enough english to help us. Very friendly! They bus the tables outside, but you can also order it to go. Inside seating is limited but outside there is a shaded seating area near the main road with some cute greenery. Seems like a local favorite with many taking their food or sitting in. It's on the corner of the street which makes it really great to people watch and relax after a long day of walking.

I've traveled enough to know that service in Rome operates differently than back home, and I…read moregenuinely make allowances for that. This was something else entirely. We had a reservation at 8pm and were seated promptly -- a good start. Then nothing. Twenty-five minutes passed without a single staff member approaching our table. We had to flag someone down, who initially brushed us off before eventually returning. Wine came quickly once ordered, but food didn't arrive until 9:45 -- over an hour after ordering. In that time, we watched two other couples leave without ever being spoken to, and a third ordered drinks, waited, and walked out. When our drinks ran dry, staff walked by multiple times without a glance. When we finally caught someone's attention, the response was a dismissive "yeah yeah, one second." That kind of attitude wears thin fast. The food was fine -- not bad, not memorable. Bruschetta, eggplant parmigiana, and white lasagna were all acceptable, but nothing came close to justifying the wait or compensating for the experience. The wine list is impressively extensive, though navigating hundreds of options via QR code in dim lighting is its own challenge -- a printed list would go a long way. Maybe we caught them on a bad night. Maybe they cater primarily to locals and tourists aren't a priority. Either way, Trastevere is full of excellent options where you'll feel welcome. I'd walk down the street before returning here.

Their breakfast selection is incredible -- a wide variety of fresh, beautifully crafted pastries that taste just as good as they look. The cappuccinos are perfectly made, rich and balanced, exactly what you'd expect in Italy. What makes this place even more special is that it's not just for mornings. In the afternoon, it transforms into the perfect spot to enjoy a relaxed aperitivo in a lovely, cozy setting. The service truly stands out -- the staff is incredibly friendly, attentive, and always smiling, which makes the whole experience even more enjoyable. A must-visit if you're in Rome -- whether it's for breakfast, a coffee break, or a laid-back afternoon drink.

I was disappointed with the bread and cookies we purchased. It's difficult to do everything well. Perhaps narrowing on one specialty is best, but I'm old school. I miss the days of the fruit store, the formaggi shop, the wine merchant, etc. Everyone was lovely at Il Gianfornaio, and reminded me of how my American education was lacking. I can only speak English and a smattering of French. The merchants at Il Gianfornaio spoke English better than me. That was embarrassing.

He said, when you are in Rome, you HAVE to go to Osteria del Pegno. One of the best meals he had in Italy. He was right! What a fantastic meal. We had the beef carpaccio, lasagna, and a four cheese pizza. The restaurant is located on a side street, very quaint, and we did make a reservation. Good thing we did because they were busy from 7pm-9pm when we left. We were able to sit outside and the owner and his team were friendly and very accommodating. Price wise, for what we ate, I don't think it was too expensive....we were able to work off the calories by walking back to the hotel. Great place to eat!

Away from the hustle and bustle of the Piazza, Osteria del Pegno offers a quaint, romantic, authentic Italian experience. Their pastas are absolutely delicious - particularly the pesto and truffle pastas. I remembered their pastas being the best I've ever had and have talked about it often throughout the years. Our visit back yesterday didn't disappoint. Additionally, we also enjoyed their cheeseboard with 3 different delicious cheeses and a wonderful tiramisu dessert. We are returning again before we depart Italy because we love it so much. We brought our kids here this time and it was a highlight for them as well. We highly recommend you come to Osteria del Pegno if you enjoy authentic Italian pasta and want a quiet, charming dining experience.
