When we were planning our trip to Italy, we asked our son -- who had visited in the last year or so -- what suggestions he had. He said, when you are in Rome, you HAVE to go to Osteria del Pegno. One of the best meals he had in Italy. He was right! What a fantastic meal. We had the beef carpaccio, lasagna, and a four cheese pizza. The restaurant is located on a side street, very quaint, and we did make a reservation. Good thing we did because they were busy from 7pm-9pm when we left. We were able to sit outside and the owner and his team were friendly and very accommodating. Price wise, for what we ate, I don't think it was too expensive....we were able to work off the calories by walking back to the hotel. Great place to eat! read more

This is our favorite Italian restaurant in the entire world. I mean it! We just returned to eat here after first stumbling into this gem of a restaurant 15 years ago located down a quiet alleyway off Piazza Navona. Away from the hustle and bustle of the Piazza, Osteria del Pegno offers a quaint, romantic, authentic Italian experience. Their pastas are absolutely delicious - particularly the pesto and truffle pastas. I remembered their pastas being the best I've ever had and have talked about it often throughout the years. Our visit back yesterday didn't disappoint. Additionally, we also enjoyed their cheeseboard with 3 different delicious cheeses and a wonderful tiramisu dessert. We are returning again before we depart Italy because we love it so much. We brought our kids here this time and it was a highlight for them as well. This little out of the way restaurant was very charming. It has a family feel. We took our grandchildren here and the dinner was wonderful! We had the lamb, the gnocchi, the orecchiette and the pasta with truffle butter. They were all fantastic. The service was attentive and efficient. We each had a different dessert and the were all special. Something I wouldn't normally comment on: the bread basket was unique. There were several unexpected delights. So delicious! My friend had this on her list to try and we didn't get in on Saturday night, but made a reservation for the next day. We came in Sunday and the food was delicious. I had a strawberry salad with oranges, which was fresh and tasty. I also had house made tagliatelle alla norma, which was a great texture. I decided I'm not a huge fan of the ricotta salata so I wouldn't continue to order this, but it was very well done. We were also offered watermelon at the end of our meal. Found this place through a random blog about eating in Rome by someone who lived here for two years. Tried to get reservations the day if for a party of 3 and they were sold out. Asked about the next night (Saturday) and they were able to accommodate us. Took an Uber from our hotel who got lost in the process and had to drop us 3 blocks away. Lots of pedestrian only streets around there go figure. Got in at 7, the waiter who spoke English sat us. Then we started noticing locals coming in and having dinner as well. We must have been the only Americans in the place. No worries the menus are in both Italian and English. They brought us hand made bread with some mozzarella + jalapeño cakes of some kid that were still hot and steamy. To die for. I ordered house red wine which was the best I've ever had in my entire life. We started with an appetizer of Anchovies. My son ordered the gnocchi, my wife ordered the ravioli ricotta which could be described as tender, silky and exquisite. I ordered the veal escalopes which was a master piece. Then for dessert we got a trio of: Tiramisu Tris di cioccolato Gelato with fruit All there were home made and were omg kill me now I'm in heaven amazing. They gave us a cookie biscuit thing and a complementary lemmonchello for digestion. All told we came out at 98€ In the states this could easily have ran us $300 for the same quality of food and experience. I'm super glad this restaurant isn't listed on the tour guides or any popular tourist blogs. I'm also super glad that we waited until our final night in Rome to have this amazing experience. I'll have to book another trip just to stop in and have dinner here before flying back to Seattle. It's that amazing that I would travel just for dinner. read more

My friend and I had dinner here our last night in Rome and what a great way to end our time in the city! I made a reservation through Facebook for a weekday night about two days in advance. It is a romantic, elegant atmosphere where locals go so I would recommend dressing up a little nicer and brushing up on Italian dining etiquette (aka we wish we weren't in shorts and had known the bread wasn't to eat beforehand). I ordered the gnocchi and it was the best I had in Italy. The host also gave us complimentary limoncello, which truly rounded out an incredible dining experience. Wife and I literally stumbled upon this restaurant after a full day in Rome. Wife got the carbonara which was amazing. I had the Penne Arrabbiata and we split a suckling pig & potatoes main course. All of the food was delicious, prices were reasonable. Very charming atmosphere. Restaurant is relatively small. They take reservations and there were multiple groups that tried to 'walk-in' however they were turned away because they were fully booked. My wife and I were lucky because the only table they had which wasn't booked was a table for 2. We only spent 2 days in Rome so wanted to try a different restaurant for our second evening however if we were spending a longer amount of time in Rome or if we ever come back we will definitely be going here again! read more

Our favorite restaurant in all of Rome. I have probably eaten here 20+ times. The location is magic, just off of Piazza Navona, so you are in the true center, but without the noise and tourist fare. It's a small family place, and once they get to know you, they treat you like family too. But even if you don't speak Italian (my parents don't speak it) they treat you with respect. For appetizers try to tortino do melanzane, and buffala with prosciutto. The Carbonara is the best in Rome. The guanciale is crispy instead of fatty and soft. My boyfriend, a Roman, swears by this carbonara and prefers it over his own mothers. For me, the tagliatelle dall'mare or vomgole or whatever the pasta with seafood mussels and clams, is called (it changes names depending on what pasta they have) it's amazing. We came here for lunch, and overall it was quite good. Octopus appetizer was obviously overcooked, and the wine we selected was a big miss. However, the pizza and fish entree we ordered were very delicious. I wouldn't have minded trying this place out for dinner. Atmosphere is really charming. While in Rome, I yelped a couple of restaurants and Osteria del Pegno, among others, came up. It got good reviews so we decided to try it out. A-MAZING! We started off with a good bottle of red wine (good wine selection, btw!) and Caprese to start, which was really fresh and tasty. My girl ordered the Spaghetti alla Carbonara and she LOVED it. I got the Fillet with baked potatoes and the steak was perfectly cooked and seasoned. All in all, it was delicious! We found the Osteria del Pegno, after passing on all the places in and near the Piazza Navoa. Their specials looked promising and had tasty sounding items on it, so we took a chance. It was an iffy chance because most of the restaurants we'd passed closer in to the piazza Navona were crammed with people and this one was dead empty (although one young Italian couple came in later.) They had a very extensive menu, with explanations in English, so it was obvious that they get lots of tourists, but I wanted to try one of their specials. I went out to re-read their special board and ordered tagliarini with fresh porcini mushrooms and ravioli with spinach and riccota. Both sounded good so I had the taglarini and my wife ordered the ravioli. Both turned out to be wonderful - my tagliarini was much better than a similar meal we'd had just last night - and we'd thought that was good. It contained mushrooms that were much fresher and hadn't been cooked to mush - they were nice and firm. The mushrooms had been sauteed in garlic - LOTs of garlic and olive oil and basil. After I was done with the tagliarini, there was still a lot of oil left on the plate that made for a great bread dip - which was also quite good. The raviolis were simply two enormous raviolis - each about 4 inches square. They were covered in a saffron sauce that had been made with so much saffron the sauce was bright yellow and it smelled really strongly of saffron. Both were very good, but I liked mine better - I'm a sucker for the porcini mushrooms. We returned for lunch on a weekend and it was very crowded and we were lucky to get a table. We had the same table as before but their specials didn't include the raviolis so my wife settled for the tagliorini with porcini mushrooms. I was going to try their involtini but luckily I spotted coniglio and made a quick switch. It was coniglio al la Ischia - cooked as is done on the isle of Ischia. It was a half a rabbit that had been cut into thirds and then braised, the brown sauce appeared to be a wine sauce that didn't have a lot in it but it was decidedly garlic and contained some halved cherry tomatos. I wasn't initially going to have any wine for lunch, but after seeing the rabbit, I had to go for it - and then I found they had a Barolo by Marchese di Barolo for only E30 - that was the clincher. It was really good. I can't find rabbit at restaurants in the states so when in Rome... After lunch, we had a cafe and I then had a lemoncello. After a quick trip down to the toilet, when I returned there were two more lemoncellos on the table. The waitress had brought them by and compliments of the house. How nice! This is most definitely a place to eat. read more

Stumbled upon this restaurant (looking for something away from the squares) with my family for lunch and had pizza. We loved the pizza so much, we decided to try dinner and we were so pleased. All four pasta dishes were fabulous (Lasagna, Carbonara, Arrabiata, & the special), one of the best places we ate on our 12 day trip throughout Italy and pricing was very reasonable for Rome. Was going to order bottle of wine but owner suggested more economical house wine and it was fine. Staff did a nice job. Highly recommend! read more
